I had a set of Schwalbe Big Apple tires on my recumbent trike and recently replaced them with Beg Ben tires. Because my trike, a Catrike Villager, does not have suspension I needed some tires that would absorb the bumps and shocks of the road in order to smooth out the ride some. The Big Apples, being balloon tires, did a very good job of this. The roads I ride are a mixture of unpaved dirt roads and paved rural roads.I was disappointed when I noted that at approximately 1,000 miles the wire bead began showing through on both Big Apples on my front wheels. I had anticipated that bike tires that costs approximately $40 each would last longer than this.I have had automobile tires that cost around $40 each that have lasted for more than 20,000 miles. I thought perhaps that because the Big Apples are not much more than slicks, having very little tread pattern, that they had worn out quickly. In defense of the tires, I have to admit that I never kept a very good check on the tire pressure, and usually filled them to the lower end of the inflation range to provide better shock absorption. Running them at a decreased pressure does cause tires to wear out much more quickly.I did not want to spring for another $40 per tire for Big Apples if they were not going to last more than 1,000 miles. I saw that Schwalbe was advertising the Big Ben's as basically a Big Apple with more of a tread pattern. I thought perhaps the increased tread height would lead to longer wear before the wire bead began showing through.I have been running the Big Ben's for about 200 miles now and I am impressed with them. They give all the bounce and shock absorption of the Big Apples without appearing to be any heavier. When I received them I found that they have the Schwalbe "Lite Skin" side walls. This does reduce the weight of the tire. I never had a flat on the Big Apples, and the puncture resistance of the Big Ben's should be comparable. I have often run over broken glass in the road with no ill effects.I have noticed that the Big Ben's do give a little bit of a roar when going down the road, similar to what one would experience in a four wheel drive vehicle with mud tires on it. This is probably more noticeable on a recumbent trike since the rider is sitting at the level of the tires. I do not find this road noise unpleasant. It is faint, but discernible, and I actually enjoy it. It is like it is speaking to me saying "I still have plenty of tread left."Time will tell the tale of how many miles I can get out of the Big Bens. So far I cannot discern any wear, but I am also running them at a higher pressure (45 psi as opposed t 35 psi). This does not seem to have negatively impacted the shock absorption, and it is well within the range of the recommended inflation pressure of 35-55 psi.One more benefit of the balloon tires, whether they are Big Apples or Big Bens is that they handle much better than a skinny tire when offroad in sand or loose dirt. They do not bog down as easy. This is important for me due to the types of roads I traverse.

These fit wonderfully on a Surly Straggler. At the time I purchased these, there was only one other review, which really helped. I must confirm that I barely noticed any rolling resistance. Especially coming from the Schwalbe Marathon Mondial, which had really high rolling resistance. Here's what I find to be the most interesting thing about these tires. I'm actually quite surprised at how well these perform. The benefit to these tires is that you can just roll right over many of the things that you would have to slow down or try to evade with narrow tires (25 to 35 mm). These tires are heavier than my Surly Knards, or Clement X'Plor USH, but I don't mind that. I am not riding a rigid aluminum or light carbon bicycle.I am riding steel. Its heavier and so am I. I put my tires through lots of gravel, dirt roads, double-track, some single-track, ragged tarmac, country roads and more, and these tires can pretty much roll right over it all without the harsh bumps and road vibration. It took me a couple rides to realize that these should not be inflated too much. I run them now around 40 to 42 lbs, and this pressure is fine for a 250 lb man. I was running them at 45 to 50 LBS, and that was way to hard/harsh of a ride. You do not really gain rolling resistance by lowering the pressure. I have found that your overall time may actually be better with lower pressure because these tires absorb much of the shock that you would have otherwise felt and slowed you down, as well as fatiguing you faster.I've done a few 50, 60+ mile rides on these tires already, and was hardly fatigued at all. Just hungry.

I've been looking for the perfect city riding tyre for my mountain bike for a few years now.I've tried various types of "semi slicks", including the old Specialized Crossroads (current version has redesigned tread) and Kenda Kwick. These were ok but I found tyres with one type of tread in the centre and another on the edge can be unstable when cornering. The Schwalbe Big Ben has a good consistent tread that corners well and is deep enough to grip well on poor surfaces, yet rolls very nicely on good roads.Up until very recently I've been using the Panaracer Pasela Tourguard, which have a good tread and are great for long road rides, but even in the largest 1.75 size don't give the smoothest of rides over poor city streets or towpaths. The 2.15 size Big Ben gives plenty of volume for a smooth ride over kerbs and potholes. I'd like to try the 2.35 size too but obviously the bigger the tyre the heavier they are so I think 2.15 is a nice tradeoff. The Schwalbe Big Ben is perfect for mountain bike riders who want to smooth out the bumps with a fat tyre, but use their bikes mainly on the road / in the city with occasional use on towpaths or similar.I've only had these for a couple of weeks so can't comment yet on the durability or puncture resistance. It would be nice if they did a folding bead version to save a bit of weight but that would add to the cost, so I think five stars is deserved.

My needs have evolved... I built a mountain bike up into an electrified monster that can hit about 36mph on the flats with a range of about 80 miles running around 30mph. Problem was, I built it for looks and used a nice looking creme colored Kenda beach bike style tire to go with a vintage look I was after. Looked great until my tires came out from under me on a damp morning heading to a ride and busted up my shoulder due to a lack of carbon black.OK, so I'll watch out for traction in the rain I thought... was going through tires with leaks with no debris found... then on a long fast ride, one of those pretty tires seperated the cords for about 6-8 inches causing the tube to come through the tire and explode on the pavement.Hmm... need something better.Did my research and found out that there are now speed rated tires for electrice bikes and this Schwalbe Big Ben is one of those. Rated for 50KPH/30mph for Europe, I figure it should work on American roads as well. I have only had to add air to the tires once in the last month or so and no flats, great traction, low rolling resistance, absolutely nothing to complain about except that it doesn't come in pretty colors that cause you to crash in the wet. I can live with that a lot easier than living with the injuries I suffered from what I percieved to be a cool looking tire.

I will be using them on an e-bike that runs 5kw.I need stiff side walls, good grip, weight carrying ability and decent speed rating. It's too early to say how well these tires do longer term. This is all first impressions.1. These tires have good side walls. I get very little flex in curves.2. The ebike with batteries and motor and controller weighs a lot more than a bike does. So far the tires are holding up to the weight.3. Grip and wear...that part is less optimal than I'd like. I think a deeper tread would have been better. Thin tread means I'll run out of rubber faster. The back tire especially so since it has to hold 5kw. With the speed and weight of the bike, grip or soft rubber is needed and thin rubber just wears through quickly.

Wanted a faster tire for my mostly pavement riding, but one with a respectable width to stay true to my XC mountain bike. Swapped out my stock Maxxis ikon 27.5 x 2.2 for these 27.5 x 2.0 on my Giant Talon 4 2016. Huge difference: low noise and they roll extremely well on the pavement trail. They also handle off-roading into some grass retention ponds well enough at full inflation. I imagine when under inflated, these will be able to handle some of the light/flatter local Florida mountain bike trails, but will likely slap back on the Ikons for that as a safety precaution/for the thrills.I’d equate these to stock tires on a body on frame SUV that’s meant to go off the beaten path once in a while.Highly recommended and priced right.

My new e-bike came with some Kenda 47mm tires. The bike felt too rigid and bounced hard with every bump. I wished I had bought a bike with suspension. Then a friend told me to get Schwalbe “balloon” tires, 55mm, or as big as my frame would allow. So I did just that, and these tires made my ride feel a lot smoother. I’m now really satisfied with my bike overall. The tires made more difference than I expected. These Big Ben tires were the perfect choice for a heavy e-bike. And I think the brown looks great - I’ve started getting more compliments on my bike.

I have to say that in the 30 plus years of doing all types of cycling activities that these tires are by far the best I’ve ever ridden. Flats? What’s that? You can leave all that extra tube replacement gear at home. Rolling resistance? Not an issue. Rolls smooth on pavement, yet can handle loose dirt and grass no problem. When it comes time to replace these, guess what? I’m getting the exact same tires as long as the manufacturer continues to make them.

I mounted these on my street slaying Swobo Folsom and I couldn't be happier! For being giant pillows of awesome they roll surprisingly fast and smooth. I went with the Bens over the Apples because of the meatier tread and higher inflation, the potential to hit some grass and light unpaved trail, and the high probability of me jumping curbs and various other sweet jumps. The tires are proving to be perfect urban rollers.

Firstly I had been searching the Internet and local stores for these tires. Been reading great reviews and they were exactly the type I wanted for my Mtn bike rebuild. When I found these tires I couldn’t believe the price. They were the lowest anywhere. Shipping was fairly decent considering delays with C-19. After installing them I couldn’t be happier with the tires. Thank you Bikeinn!!

Got a new mountain bike with all year round tyres which are very good but not ideal for road surfaces. Got these as it should be much better but still OK for park riding. Went on a 30km ride on a variety of surfaces and it performed admirably. Much faster on tarmac than my MTB tyres. It's a little challenging to fit but nothing too hard. Very happy to keep this on.

The last 12,000 km on the back wheel driven mixed route profile; if you do not drive it too soft (about 3.5 to 4 bar), the rolling resistance is excellent, goes well on gravel; but requires very careful installation, otherwise the tire tends to run-out; really needs to be exactly centered in the rim (insider tip: baby powder helps even better than lubricant)

Impeccable for the summer, mounted on my mountain bike, to make the road and dry dirt road. I would go up the tires crampons for the winter. On the other hand to think to well clean the interior of the tire, because hardly mounted, punctured on the interior face, without even having rolled. A filings had to drag in it.

Hello, I would like to know if they are suitable for my mountain bike. Now I mount standard tires, 27.5 x 2.10 650B and since I always go on the road and never off road, I would like to put them normal. If you also have suitable inner tubes, since mine are old, I would make a one-off purchase. Thank you
