The SanDisk iXpand Base does exactly what it claims to do - it's a fast charger that can backup photos, videos, and contacts of any compatible iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in the background. This is a really convenient concept that helps keep all the data safe without the user needing to do anything more than just simply plugging in the cable.Inside the box there is the charging base itself, a wall adaptor, and a standard class 10 SanDisk SD card where the device's data will be backed up to. The package does not include a USB A to Lightning cable, which the user will need to supply themselves. On the back of the unit is a micro USB port for the power adaptor to connect to as well as the SD card slot. The Lightning cable can be plugged into a USB A port hidden on the bottom of the unit, while there's a gap around the perimeter where the cable can be wrapped around to shorten it if needed. When it comes to charging, SanDisk advertises "fast charging" but doesn't mention the exact specifications. To test this, I used an official Apple fast charge compliant Lightning cable and connected the iXpand Base to a diagnostics-equipped iPad. The device was able to read the charger spec as 10 Watts with a maximum current output of 2.1 Amps. This means the product can charge devices faster than the basic 5W charger Apple used to include with iPhones, but not quite as fast as the 12W or 20W chargers shipped with higher-end iPads. In order to fully take advantage of the fast charging, you'll need a device that supports faster power input (iPhone 11 or newer) as well as a cable designed to work with higher currents. Older cables might limit charging to 1A only.As for the backup feature, the first time you plug your device in you will be asked to download the iXpand Base app which is free. The first backup will take quite a lot of time depending on how many photos and videos need to be transferred, but subsequent backups will be a lot faster as the app will only sync new files across while avoiding creating duplicate backups. What's nice is that you don't need to open the app and manually start backups, this can all happen automatically in the background. Backups are stored on the SD card, which can be ejected and inserted into a PC or you can even connect the iXpand Base itself to a PC with a micro USB cable. While the base is connected to a PC, it won't be able to charge any devices or perform backups and it will need to be plugged back into the supplied power brick in order to resume charging/backups.One negative aspect of the product is that while it organises photos based on year and month, the files are not organised by day but instead they're assigned a random string of characters as the file name. These names are not chronologically ordered so it can be quite difficult to further organise them when viewing on a PC. A workaround would be to import the files into photo management software and then organise them by date taken, but this is an unnecessary extra step if the iXpand Base was able to properly name files chronologically. On the flip side, one positive is the use of removable storage. I can swap between multiple SD cards or even use larger capacity cards than the one supplied and they will all work. Theoretically I could just buy the 32GB package and use my own 256GB and there shouldn't be any problems.All-in-all, I think this is a great device. It simplifies the backup process and makes it as convenient as just plugging in the phone and letting the app automatically take care of the rest. With a few minor issues aside, this could very well help many people keep their important data safe and secure. Some users might have encountered some issues using this device, these tips might help:- Make sure you're using an official Apple Lightning cable, some third-party cables may cause compatibility issues with accessories like this- Reinstall or update the iXpand Base app if it's misbehaving- Copy the contents of the SD card to your PC, then format the SD card before putting it back into the device and reattempting a backupPlease note that for my review, I used an iPhone 12 Pro on iOS 14.6 with version 2.6 of the iXpand Base app, which was the newest version available at the time of writing. Your mileage may vary based on different hardware or software configurations.

As many who own IPhones can attest to it is one of the most frustrating issues of the IPhone when you are running out of storage and simply can't do like other phones out there on the Android platform as they offer up the opportunity to increase your storage capacity through micro SD cards. Thanks to this little device you can simply have your photos and videos load onto an SD card overnight as your phone charges up.Positives -Simple to use.An app that does everything for you as soon as you open it and plug in the phone. The device and app work together to download only the new photos or videos on your device so as not to duplicate your works. As this stores to an SD card you can simply changeover the SD card when you have reached capacity.Compared to many other IPhone storage solutions this is a good value option. This speeds up the charging of your IPhone when compared to your normal charging via the plug. The top is rubberised and textured so that you can place your phone on the top and not worry about the phone slipping off.Fairly quick at loading the photos across from the phone. Thanks to the rubberised design you can store your cable by pushing this around the sides which stores it securely.Negatives -Can sometimes not load the photos properly which is normally due to your photos not being stored on the phone and instead being on the cloud so you may need to muck around with your settings slightly to set this up at the start.Fairly heavy so not ideal for taking on holidays.Overall for me I have found this to be a good piece of kit that enables me to transfer my photos from my phone to an SD card which makes it easy to get on to a computer too. I have found it a really easy to use product and would quite happily recommend this to anyone using an IPhone as it makes for something that you can make habit so you always back your photos up and can check they are on your SD card before you delete them from the phone.

I bought this unit to maker it simpler to get photos and videos off of my iPhone. I find it hard to manage the space on the phone and routinely run out but equally want to retain some stuff on the phone too as I need to reference it from time to time. I've been using Dropbox for a couple of years to copy stuff off which works ok but isn't very quick and does nothing to manage the phone's storage, it just gets you a second copy.A couple of setup points first:1)The USB wouldn't go in. It seemed like the springs that connect to the metal outer of the USB plug in the SanDisk USB socket were slightly too proud.I could've returned the unit as it seemed like a weird one-off but a gentle poke with a small screw driver seemed to get them clear of the incoming USB plug so it would go in.2)Not all USB plugs will fit. I started with an Amazon Basics USB <> Lightning. That is quite a chunky (and long) USB body and it physically wouldn't fit in the space the SanDisk unit gives you. A 'proper' Apple cable did fit.I installed the App and fired up the backup. It copied pretty quickly so quite happy with that.I then had a look at the card contents on my Mac. I was quite pleased with that too. A folder with my phone name, and below that videos and photos sub-divided (I didn't backup contacts). And below that all photos / videos in (separate) folders by month. So overall, it largely does what it claims to do.However, I think the App is a little primitive. Out of the box it just copies (i.e. doesn't delete stuff). I am told by SanDisk that you can get it to ask you if you want to delete. I want a cleverer App though. I have about 4 years worth of stuff on the phone. I want to be able to see some photos that are older say. I want to be able to say (for example) delete stuff older than a year when it is backed up, but keep anything newer than a year. I think the App is a bit basic right now.

The SanDisk iXpand Base is not cheap at almost £70 but its 64GB charging and backup properties are impressive. The smart looking device charges up your iPhone/iPad automatically backs up everything on your phone so you don't have to bother with downloading it yourself nor to actually have to pay for storage in a cloud. If you are the type of person who does not back up their date but should then this is the device for you.So if you were unfortunate to lose your phone you can instantly download any data you have.It is a decent, powerful and fast charger but that will not be the reason you will pay so much for it.The device works seamlessly with your Apple device and that is about it.Expensive, useful if you don't back up your data, smart looking and neat. Thanks for reading.

This is a nice quality and well made and backs up your phone every time you plug it in. I have had one or two nightmares with phone back-up - hardly ever plug into the PC these days and I'm too tight to take out a data plan - so backing the iPhone up every time is very helpful. It comes with its own charger, but you still have to add a lightning port wire, and it would have been a better package if this was added. The pad doesn't really add much, and I guess it is booking the space on my bedside table for when we all go to wireless charging in future years. This is well made, the software seems to work well and it charges and backs up effectively. It also dealt seamlessly with the iOS 11 upgrade (iPhone 6S).Recommended, but I would have liked a lightning wire.

Many people may question the purpose of a backup station for iPhone, but for people who don't have cloud storage to seamlessly backup their memories, this is the perfect solution. I have heard horror stories from friends who have broken their phones, and their last backup was months ago. This little device offers perfect peace of mind, backing up your photos and videos with very little effort.Setup could not be easier. You simply install an app on your phone, then plug the station into the wall, plug in your phone, and the app takes care of everything. Doing this every day ensures that your pictures and videos will always be safe. The design is excellent, the top is designed to grip the phone, and is also very easy to keep clean.

An impressively executed device with a very clear functional remit.Combined charger and backup (64Gb, expandable to 256GB of storage) is a simple and effective idea. Fast charger (15w), nice design with inbuilt cable management (no cable included though) and via a companion app enables seamless back-up and restore of your content. A nice idea, looks goed, works well, might be a bit pricey, but so is everything which works well in the Apple ecosystem. A nice bit of kit.

Taking into account the Class 10 SD card and the 3amp hi power usb charger this isn't a bad price. The main unit is a rather solid piece of aluminium which resists sliding on a table top with rubber feet and top. The SD card is removable and so expandable.Disappointing though is the lack of a usb cable to connect the phone to the unit.It charges my android phone nicely too as a bonus.

Neat package, slight tilt so you can grab phone easily (grip on the surface holds phone firmly), charger cable is not built in so no issues about broken cables... charging lead is loooooong so no issues about reaching a plug... sd card is removable so if you upgrade your phone storage, there is no issue. It works a treat too. This is great, well done Sandisk!

Once the app is installed everything is really easy. Plug it, connect the phone and it pretty much runs itself. Photos were backed up safely. There is a suggestion that this is also serves as some sort of "fast charger", but it seems to charge at the same rate as the standard mains charger that came with the phone. A handy device although not essential.

Perfect for anyone with limited phone storage, as an iPhone user with over two thousand photos, it is great to ensure all photos, videos and contacts are backed up in case of disaster.3 stars for durability as a fault with the cable led to me buying a replacement, no major issues however, all around great buy.

This is a useful (but expensive) iPhone charger/back-up storage system. It's easy to install the app on your phone and back-up of my phone which had about 9.6 GB of photos etc on it took about 10 minutes. It charged the phone at the same time and the memory card can be removed and put in laptops etc.

This is an ingenious gadget. It backs up as it charges - how clever and useful is that! I once lost my phone and for some reason my cloud storage hadn't worked. This little device has set my mind at rest against the possibility of that happening again.

17.9.2017

A clever device that effectively backs up your phone while it is charging. With a 64GB capacity, it has enough memory for most users. It also looks good. I charge my phone overnight and I sleet easier knowing the content is backed up.

I use this to charge and back up my photos on my iPad. The fact that it does both is so convenient. I think everyone with an iPhone or iPad needs one of these! It is small and light so you can take it on your travels as well.
