I think 4 stars is fair for this device because although it works, it isn't wonderful. My point in the headline about expectation, I think, influences one's impression of this tool. I think perhaps it is marketed 'optimistically' in terms of its abilities. For example, the packaging mentions cleaning up the workshop. This is certainly optimistic. Over the years I have struggled with using 1000w, mains driven industrial vacuum cleaners to tackle that job. Even those big machines struggle with 'heavy' stuff (swarf, etc.). Similarly, things like brick dust (and the like) are difficult for vacuums to deal with because fine, 'heavy' dust seems to coat and clog any internal filters (or bags) instantly, thus dropping the efficiency after the first one second in use, meaning constant emptying and beating of filters/bags is often necessary even within one clean-up operation. To therefore advertise a little battery operated vacuum as suitable for that sort of purpose is almost setting up the device to fail. That sort of job is a serious challenge for any vacuum, even the big ones. I would thus not expect (or even try to use) a little cleaner like this for any fine or 'heavy' and 'cloggy' dust jobs like that - it just won't do it, nor will many mains-driven household cleaners. So, having set my expectation in what I consider to be a realistic way for a little device like this, I am comparing, as far as I can, like-with-like. To this end, I have a small, rechargeable (7.2v, internal batteried) hand held cleaner purchased from a popular discount store. This thing (seriously) has trouble sucking a breadcrumb off a plate. Absolutely hopeless. Tons of noise, but totally ineffective. (how does something so completely useless get as far as the manufacturing stage?) Compared to that, this ryobi is about the best of the rest that I've found. It will at least provide some suction. In use, it will actually pick up the corner of my mat for a short distance before letting go again. I have never seen any other battery operated vacuum do that. I actually bought this to keep in the cupboard in the house to deal with the odd untidy crumb scatter, dusty window sills, a quick whizz around the 'bitty' areas in front of chairs etc., without having to get the mains cleaner out. This it does adequately. In use, this little cleaner is very well balanced (with a battery installed). I find it a bit difficult to use because the contact angle of the head seems quite steep meaning the cleaner has to be used quite 'vertically' to keep the business end in contact with what's being cleaned, meaning, in turn, it's quite hard to use on the 'push' stroke because it's apt to 'dig-in', being easier to 'pull'. Other than that, it does what I wanted it for within the realms of the limited expectations I mentioned. Even so, I'm expecting to have to be vigilant in frequent emptying and 'knocking-out' the filter to keep the efficiency as high as possible. One final advantage of this cleaner over other 'rechargeable' devices is the standard one+ battery system. With internal batteried devices, one either needs a mains socket in its storage cupboard (rare) or you have the device in the way somewhere while it's on charge. The ryobi can be tidied away immediately after use and the battery can just be swapped as needed and the removed one charged conveniently in the workshop, or wherever. In summary, I cannot manage five stars for this cleaner because I really don't think it lives up to the expectations set by its advertising, but in setting my own, realistic expectations of what I thought this device could do, I think it's equal to any of its type and better than most. In terms of the latter, I think four stars is fair.

When you use one of these, you feel like a real man. Who know, you might even get one? ;)As others have commented, it's a great price if you already have a battery and charger. It's about the same price as a cheap, nasty one from Argos, that has the battery and charger supplied. However, if you have to buy a battery and charger just to use this little vacuum cleaner, you need to budget for a total about £100, which kind of puts it into "not on your life" territory.I class this as a relatively light duty appliance. It works just fine for things like cleaning up the dust that accumulates around computer gear, removing cobwebs and general household detritus, and light workshop cleaning -- sawdust and shavings, that kind of thing. It won't really pick up metal swarf, or wire off-cuts. It can pick up dust and grot that builds up in nooks and crannies in a car, for example, but it won't shift thick mud from a carpet. The amount of use you'll get to a charge depends, of course, on the kind of battery you fit. I guess it's around 10-15 minutes for the smallest Ryobi batteries. I haven't tried with the larger batteries, because I don't really have a need to. Even with a small battery, it's heavy compared to a cheap model -- getting the cobwebs from the corners of rooms is a bit of an arm workout.I can't comment on the long-term reliability, because I haven't had it long. It's sufficiently cheap that I wouldn't expect it to last a lifetime, but I'd expect a couple of years' use. It certainly feels robust, and there's a proper wire filter, which should stop smeg getting into the motor.I can't say I'm keen on the zombie green colour, but it does give it a macho look, and it matches the rest of Ryobi's tool range. The thing that stops this being a five-star rating is that it doesn't really suck hard enough, for the size and noise of the appliance. It sounds like it's trying to suck a golf ball down a hose, but the suction is comparatively modest. All in all -- can't complain at this price, provided you have other Ryobi stuff already.

Having owned 2 top end B&D dustbusters in the past I'd decided never to buy another similar product because the batteries have lasted little over 18 months and replacements (which can only be bought with the motor assembly) cost 90% of a new unit. Having bought a Ryobi drill with 2 x 1.3Ah Lithium batteries recently I thought I'd give this a shot as the batteries would otherwise be unused for most of the year and at under £24 this looked like the answer to my needs. The unit is well constructed and if anything is better built than my previous B&D having a good weight and being well balanced with the battery installed. Suction is on par I'd say with my previous B&D pivot.I can't really vouch for the battery life although I reckon I got 20 min usage out of one of the 1.3Ah batteries and that was after a DIY session, fitting a door lock and drilling/screwing about 20 screws through floorboards. As mentioned by other reviewers the nozzle attachment could be longer/better but is certainly good enough for DIY/around the house. All in all this is a great buy if you've already invested in batteries.

Please note that whatever it says on here, it is NOT wet and DRY it is just for dry. It's about right for the price. From this company I was expecting something with a bit more oomph but it does the job reasonably well.Without the attachment on the end it doesn't really get into crevices or even up to edges so it's only of use on the middle of the carpet etc. With the attachment it's better but the suction seems less and I'm not sure how long the attachment is going to last. Also the attachment is very narrow and a better thought out and wider attachment would be a good idea (as well as the crevice tool). With even a 1.3 battery on it is quite heavy and is quite a large unit for the purpose. The battery lasted about 15 minutes from full to dead. Obviously a bigger battery would last longer...I haven't tried other handheld units to be fair but as I say I was expecting a little bit more, but this was only £20.Have recently upgraded to 4 stars because we are finding this very useful in a house full of kids.

As the reviewer above i also bought this as i have various 18v ryobi one tools and batterys and i thought this would be rather handy,BEWARE THIS CORDLESS VACUUM COMES WITHOUT A BATTERY,this is quite powerful for a cordless vacuum, the only drawback is now my son has borrowed? it as he fits windscreens and uses this on his job, looks like i will have to buy another,to finalize-if you own 18v ryobi one batterys this is a very handy product, well built and easy to clean out as it has a permanent filter and this model has an extendable nozzle, ryobi 18v one batterys are designed to be used with the huge range of ryobi one power tools which are good quality and worth buying as you only need a couple of batterys to power them,e.g.use one while the other one is on charge, you can buy the one range of power tools ''bare'' WITHOUT batterys like this one fairly cheaply.

Please remember this is the body only, no battery or charger included. So if you have other Ryobi one+ tools this vacuum for £22 is a good addition to your tool range. It is fairly noisy for its size but weight wise is ok with a 2.5 amp battery and battery charge lasts a long time. Had no problem doing a staircase and two cars while only using two blobs of battery life.It is good for stairs, quick spill clean ups, cars, sawdust and outdoor stuff. We had sand in the car mats from the beach, it didnt get that all up but was noticibley better. I would think it will also struggle with pet hair and fine things like that. The brush nozzle is ok for tops of skirting boards etc,but i found it keeps pushing itself back into the nozzle, might just be me being heavy handed! Im pleased with it and will mainly use outside/shed and in the car.

Probably would give this 5 stars if replacement filters were easier to find. This is not as powerful as any Dyson handheld but will run for well over an hour with a 4amp battery pack - which of course you need to buy separately. The Dyson will barely do a flight of stairs in one charge so the trade off is pretty clear, I still find it good enough for the stairs, car, or general cleanup duties. The supplied crevice tool is kind of useless though, too short for car applications and doesn't attach firmly enough to properly go in between the cushions on a sofa. It attaches firmly to the bottom of the vac and that's where it's likely to stay. If you already have Ryobi One+ tools, then this handheld vac is a good way to continue using your batteries in between projects and I love not having to charge the vac after every use as well.

I've had mine for years, having had an expensive DustBuster prieviously, which was ok, but when the battery goes, what can you do? With this you just change the battery easily, when you run out change the battery over, from say, the drill hanging up in the shed just to finish off the job, instead of putting the whole thing back on charge.....and well waiting for it to charge up again.that's what I love about the 18+ range, and if you lose power just clean the filter, as good as new. I've never had a dyson but for the money, this is very good when maintained, so just keep your dysons, this works well for me.also, does turns out to be quite tough, having been knocked off the table a few times, even retrieved it from the dog bed, with no adverse affects.

Bought this with a few other tools a few months ago. Only intended it for tidying jobs post DIY, but I used it for everything from cleaning the vehicles out to regular house cleaning. I bought it with the floor cleaning attachment, not the sturdiest, but with careful use it works well.Currently used with batteries from 3ah to 5ah depending what one is free and you get a decent amount of run time from a 3ah battery. Haven't got round to timing it yet though. The key thing is to regularly clean both the basket filter and the dust filter or you'll notice a drop in suction power. It's great on fine dust from drilling/sanding, but that will clog the filter. If you have some One+ kit already, this is a great addition, especially for the price!

The Ryobi One Plus series is brilliant. We have 2 chargers and a few different batteries so there is always a charged battery available so you don't need to worry about cords or the hand vac not being put back on its charger. If you are just buying this on its own, it doesn't come with a battery and you will need to buy the battery and charger separately. However, if you are thinking about getting more tools then it's well worth the investment. The vac itself is good, it's easy to empty and the extra attachment is handy for getting to tricky places. However, it's not a super vac so don't expect it to be able to do anything outside the normal scope of a hand vac.But if you are investing in the Ryobi One Plus series it's highly recommended.

Great little vacuum. Big enough to be powerful and useful but small enough to be handy. Now getting a lot of use all over the house and car. Its quite a bit bigger than the mini car-vac things we have had before, and with a 4Ah battery its not light, but my 5'0" wife has no problem using it..Yes, it would be pretty expensive if you bought this and then also spent £50 on the battery and another £40 on the charger, but if you already have ONE+ batteries then its fine. There is an added advantage: my ONE+ batteries used to be relegated to the dirty tool storage. Now they get to live in the house and, because my wife is often using this vacuum cleaner, she also makes sure there is always a ONE+ battery charged and ready when I need one :)

Very pleased with this item. Uses same batteries as my drills, radio and spotlight. Use it in the kitchen to hoover up crumbs on carpet tiles also use on my car mats to give them a quick clean. Would recommend you buy the 4.0 ah rechargeable battery to go with this item as it lasts a lot longer than the 1.5ah battery before having to recharge. Easy to empty out and to tap dirt off of internal filter. Great bit of kit will enable me to keep my car mats clean more often without having to plug in a mains vacuum which involves running an extension lead out to the car etc. Also useful for vacuuming fluff on the floor in front of the washing machine from clothes/woollens in utility room and for anywash powder spills.

Ok, the description now clearly states that it needs a battery and charger. The reason why it works so well is because of the high power separately supplied battery. This is why it has a powerful albeit loud motor and has a good suction ( for a portable unit ). If you already have Ryobi 18v tools and batteries it is bargain, if not look at the range and consider whether you can buy this as an add on to an 18v drill kit. It won't replace a mains unit but for quick clean ups and the car it's brilliant. Someone mentioned spares for it, but I don't think this is an issue because it is only just over £20, and the first plastic gauze is washable and the second you brush clean.

I am a fan of Ryobi prducts and particularly the One system. I have a range of their tools and a couple of LI battery packs and find them excellent. The Hand Vacuum is no exception. It is well built and feels robust in the hand unlike some cheaper ones in this style. I also have a Dyson Hand vacuum and the suction on the Ryobi compares well, in addition the Ryobi battery lasts infinitely longer than the Dyson. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is the small attachment that comes with it for cleaning in corners is a bit short but still perfectly useable. Great vacuum. Be aware though that when you buy it, you do not get the battery pack with it of course.

Never normally write reviews, but hand held vacuums of this style are usually p.ss poor and we bought a VAX hand held 6 months ago which barely sucks and takes an age to charge plus lasts about 10mins on a full charge, and I do not like to see met wife struggle with her choirs?. So I treated her to this Ryobi vacuum (I know and it’s not even her birthday) which was a decision based on my previous Ryobi purchases. The suction is several times better than the VAX and also the battery life. So don’t hesitate just buy it and make your wife happy too. We use it for our touring caravan and it gets the grass of the carpets.
