If you fill your kettles through the spout you'll probably love this one, if you lift off the lid and fill through the top, perhaps not so much.We retired our previous similar kettle because it was noisy and the finish was getting pretty ropey and, with this one in a decent deal, we decided to change something simply for its appearance, pretty much for the first time in our lives. Sadly this one is about the same. It still looks okay for the moment but the area around the lid is, like the previous kettle, starting to chip and wear. Somehow I thought the intervening years might have raised a few complaints and got Russell Hobbs to look at proofing the kettle against the scars of regular use!But no,we still don't have a silvered strip around the top opening that would not show chips in the finish (because it would have no finish applied there). But apart from the cosmetics, what about the other things people complain about? There are some complaints in the reviews about weird tastes caused by the kettle, and some notions that the water level indicator (in cups, for if you're barely filling the kettle for energy usage reasons) might be the culprit.Well, in our case it was a couple of kettles of "new kettle water" that we've noticed in every kettle we've ever had, after which it was absolutely fine. We always boil two or three kettle-loads of water before we actually start drinking it anyway. The "quietness" thing was also pretty good to begin with, but there are times now where it can get pretty noisy. We live in a hard water area (but apparently only hardish water - seems flexible enough to leave the taps at least) and so we get some scaling, and we have a few descaler meshes in there (Amazon sells them, look for "wire descaler" or "mesh descaler") that get exciteable sometimes, but which scoop up most of the limescale for themselves - which you can then wash out in running water while rolling the meshes between your fingers.Back on topic - the kettle can be noisy sometimes and I'm pretty sure it's not the mesh descalers in there that are to blame, and if it was, they're too useful to do away with. Those things aside, it's a perfectly nice kettle if a little slow to boil than our previous one. Since we still have it boxed up somewhere, we'll have to try racing them together sometime. Ahh, back in my day we 'ad to make our own fun.

Many people will buy this kettle for the look of it and understandably so as it has splendid Fifties/Sixties rounded lines with a cut off spout and nice detailing on the switches alongside a shiny cream body. If you have a kitchen of this style or period then this kettle will add to it-it is a genuinely pleasing and satisfying design. However as we know looks are not everything-how does it work as a kettle? Very well on the whole you get a decent 1.7 litre capacity, a water gauge with transparent window at the side, and a water filter is fitted inside which really helps if you used filtered water which we always do.An additional benefit in these energy saving days are the red plastic markers inside the kettle which help you to judge how much water to use-there are separate tabs for 1, 2 or 3 cups and this is really helpful if you only enough water to make a cup of tea for one with a bag or perhaps a small teapotful. However, the best feature of this device is its quietness . Compared to our relatively recently bought kettle it must be at least 70% quieter-perhaps more. You hear a very low rumbling noise when you switch it on as with all kettles, but then instead of the noise getting louder and louder with bubbling and vibrations, there is no increase in sound at all which means the only problem is you are not sure when it is about to boil until it actually switches itself off automatically! It is really dramatically different from older models and holds its own against the best of the new.On a practical point do fill, boil and empty the kettle a few times before use as there can be a slight aftertaste with the water when new. the manufacturer instructions suggest twice-I would suggest one or two more than that. The filter is easily removed and then washed and brushed under the tap.All in all this one of those pleasing products when you can have you cake and eat it-it looks are as good as its performance.

I don’t really want to be identified as the sort of bloke who worries about how loud kettles are when they boil! I have enough trouble with middle class angst as it is, what with Guardian reading and liking humus and all. Besides which, how would you know if your kettle is louder when boiling than any others? They may have comparable try outs of electrical kettles before you buy in the capital but here in Manchester kettles boil as loudly or otherwise as they do!Having said that, I now have to admit to a sneaking admiration for this particular kettle, why?1. It looks classy and is a decent weight2. The handle is easy to grip and the swivel base allows it to be used by people who are right or left handed3.The lid fits well4. And, yes you knew it was coming, it boils quietly! Some context here would get me off the middle class angst hook. I live in a clergy house (Church of England, so tea is VERY important), as well as the inhabitants we very frequently have meetings in the house which require beverages, our old kettle made enough noise when boiling to interrupt the flow of conversations in such meetings, this one doesn’t . Simples.Having said that it’s not all pros. This is not a cheap kettle but for quiet and style it does seem worth the money. One slight bug bear, the on/off switch at the base looks and sounds cheap and a bit nasty (it probably has something to do with weight ratio but there you go). There is a tiered marker system inside the kettle that allows you to boil one, two or three cups, thus saving energy, this I found fiddly and rather impractical. The indicator of fullness on the side has three markings (4cups, 6cups and max) but is not that easy to read being transparent but with a cream background. So over-all. I like it and if you have a meeting room with a kettle in the corner this will be a quiet option for you1

This is a lovely kettle! It comes in a large box, inside which it is well packed complete with booklet and showroom feature tags. Out of the box, boil up two full kettles of water to clean it, and it is ready to go. This kettle is an anniversary edition, so the box features the company history, which happens to be a good old British history, making much of Mister Russell and Mister Hobbs inventing the modern electric kettle as we know it. That heritage adds something to the brand and to the kettle, because its design just shouts tradition and solid Britishness, which goes well with thoughts of a cuppa of strong tea, digestive biscuits, allotments, toys made of wood, knitting patterns, and all that. It’s modern but not.The kettle has a removable permanent metal filter inside the spout, plus markers inside that measure one cup, two cups, and three cups of water. There’s also a pipe inside that I think helps it to boil quietly. It does indeed boil quietly. Our old kettle boils so loudly you wonder lava is going to burst out of it. When boiling, the kettle wobbles on its base. That might not be a design feature, but it very nice to see a kettle jiggle a little bit when it’s boiling, like a Disney movie kettle does. It’s a cute visible cue that it’s ready. It boils a cup of water in very little time, which is very handy if all you are making is a brew for one, or a bit of gravy. It is very light for its size. My elderly mother in her eighties managed to lift it, fill it, and pour from it. Having a large handle on the top helps a lot. You can get hold of it properly to lift it, fill it, and pour it.It’s a very nice looking kettle, very traditional and conservative but modern, too. It looks perfect in the kitchen. We love it!

Ok my honest review of this Kettle after 2-3 months of use. This is a decent little/large kettle. I read in some reviews people complaining about strange taste especially the first few use’s, there is going to be a weird taste when you put a soft piece of Chinese plastic on a heating element like that inside the kettle.I removed the piece of plastic when my kettle first arrived and I have never had an issues of strange or odd tasting water. For your own health and that of your family’s health I would strongly recommend you remove this utterly ridiculous piece of cheap plastic that is leaching its chemical make up into your water every time you boil the kettle..Ok so apart from that little moan. This is the best kettle I have ever owned by a long way. ITS SO QUIET, in a really nice way. It doesn't rudely dominate the entire flat like my old kettles used to, it just very quietly works away and you hardly notice its presence.I really like the lift off lid, its a nice touch and its one less thing to brake. My last two kettles both had to be replaced because the mechanism on the pop up lid broke and made the kettle redundant. This kettle you do not have that problem, there is a nice secure fitting lid with a nice handle that lifts off for filling.I like the handle although it is a little cheap plastic in its make up but it works perfectly, use common sense and hold handle away from the spout and there is no chance of getting burnt from the steam as I read one customer say in one review. This is a lovely kettle and I am really pleased with it. REMOVE THE SILLY READ CHEAP PIECE OF PLASTIC STRAIGHT AWAY and you have a perfect Kettle ;)

Perhaps a rather odd looking kettle with its retro styling, it is though very good at boiling water with very little noise. and Is fast, possibly faster than our present Bosch kettle, although it does tend to be slow to switch off when the water boils, especially if boiling just one cup of water (the Bosch and most kettles I've had suffer the same problem). While the stand takes up little space on the worktop the bulbous shape of the kettle means it takes up a little more. Its shape has other implications, with a vertical sided kettle if you're not careful you can pour out too much at once, not a problem with this kettle where the water can gently feed the spout. But this same advantage can be a disadvantage as it means that to get all the water out of the kettle you have almost to turn it on its head, a feat not helped by the handle being entirely on top of the kettle, making pouring generally awkward especially if you have problems with your wrist - there is no balance. Care is needed if just one cup has been boiled as the kettle needs to be tilted so much that one's hand is in direct line of the rising scalding steam.Inside the kettle are three paddles indicating one, two or three cups of water, in practice these are not very helpful as they are difficult to see in anything other than perfect light. There is a visual scale on the outside ot the kettle, but the calibrations start at four cups. So, good at boiling water with very little noise, but let down mainly by the awkward handle. As for looks, that's a personal matter.

I have been using this kettle for 2 months, so I now have a good idea of what's right and what's wrong with it. Overall, despite the cons I've listed below, this is a great kettle. I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't for the amount of descaling required in order to keep it running quietly. The kettle is used a lot in our household (15-20 times per day), which is possibly a contributing factor with regard to the descaling.Pros:1. Love the design2. Very quiet (but only if regularly descaled). Possibly ok in soft water areas.3. The polished stainless steel casing cleans easily on the outside. I use a damp cloth - I guess you should avoid using anything abrasive.4. Boils quite fast5.The mesh spout filter inside the kettle is easy to remove, clean and replace.Cons:1. I live in a hard water area and I need to descale this kettle at least once a week, otherwise it gets very loud.2. The water level gauge is a little difficult to read3. If the lid isn't fully closed (and it's quite a firm fit - need to press quite hard), it's possible for steam to exit via the gap and potentially scald someones hand.4. The on/off switch protrudes by about 1.5 inches from the kettle base and it feels quite delicate. I don't think it would be too difficult to accidentally damage it.5. Watch out for lime scale build up round the edge of the lid. Possibly caused by the lid not being fully closed at times.

Seriously, to ensure your drinking water does not taste metallic (some people notice this more than others) and possibly for the good of your health, remove the cheap and nasty piece of plastic from the kettle. We are replacing like for like with this kettle, and the old one never had this issue, so they have obviously changed the supplier of this plastic insert.I could not drink the water from this kettle due to its foul taste, so decided to carry out a test with some water treatment test strips (for a hot tub) that measure Chlorine, Alkalinity and PH. I tested the cold water direct from the tap and then water after it had been boiled in a saucepan and the results were very similar as you would expect.I then tested the water from the kettle.....The PH and Alkalinity measuring pads were way off the scale given on the bottle and appeared to have been 'bleached' in colour. Whether this means both these measurements are excessively high or excessively low I have no way of knowing, but I find it difficult to believe that this can be good for someones health to drink. Basically, the test strips indicate if this water were in your hot tub, you should not sit in it, so why would you drink it?Since removing the plastic insert, the water is fine, and the kettle other than that very significant design flaw is good.

This kettle is great! When I first switched it on, (following instructions and boiling a full kettle of water to discard initially), my first thought was that it was broken as it hardly made a sound. The noise level did increase a little but I was concerned that, with it being so quiet, it would take aaaaaages to boil. Not to worry - it boiled quickly and has continued to do so whilst wowing everyone with how quiet it is. It actually is possible, with this kettle, to continue a conversation in the kitchen without having to raise your voice. The kettle holds a good amount of water and, a little feature that I particularly like, is that if you take off the lid there are markers inside for 1,2 and 3 cups of water which are too little to judge accurately from the external water level window. This shows that someone's been thinking about saving energy by helping us to only boil the amount of water required.Overall, with the extreme quietness of this kettle during operation and the additional markings to allow accurate gauging of small amounts of water, this kettle has enough "different" features to make it really useful and to make it stand out above any other kettle that I've had. Highly recommended.

If you can get excited about a kettle, this might just do it for me. It’s a good size, holding standard 1.7 litres at maximum. Interestingly it has two gauges, one on the side for larger amounts and a petal arrangement inside the kettle to measure just one, two or three cups of water. That makes it great for saving water and energy by allowing you to boil only as much as you need. The kettle’s distinctive claim is that it’s quiet, and it really is – I have to check to see if the discreet light is on to check whether I have switched it on or not. For the first third of the heating it is almost silent, and even when actually boiling it is much quieter than any other kettle I can remember. It is fairly fast to boil, too, which is handy. The kettle looks as good in use as it does in the pictures, with a pleasing and very stable shape, stylish handle and gorgeous, jewel-like red colour. Most of the interior of the kettle is metal, for those concerned about the use of plastic in kettles. The spout pours very cleanly and the handle gives a good grip. All in all this is a really lovely, practical piece of kitchen equipment for a reasonable price.

I got this kettle to replace an old and I have to admit cheap and cheerful Cookworks kettle that we have had for a number of years. The old kettle makes the whole kitchen shake when it’s coming near to boiling so we thought we’d give this a go.We have a cream kitchen so this blends in perfectly. It feels amazing quality with majority of the kettle being made from enamelled metal with some plastic on the back and handle. It has a 1.7l capacity and a well marked gauge to help. It also has a very nice feature of a marker fill line for a single, 2 or 3 cups to save water and energy which is great. It boils incredibly quickly and it is SO SO quiet. I genuinely thought it was broken the first 2 times as we hardly heard it boil.It just feels very nice and top quality and it looks great too.Quick boiling, SO quiet and great quality with a adequate lead length and lovely feel. What more could you want from a kettle. Definitely worth paying a little more for.

Such an elegant looking kettle, sleek black with vintage style. It reminds me of the kettle my grandma used to have, that she used to boil on the hob. The beauty of this is that you have that classic style with modern functioning. It claims to boil 1 cup of water in 45 seconds, which I tested and it's completely true. Very good first thing in the morning for that cup of tea to get you going. It has the standard visual gauge on the side for water level for 4 cups or more, but inside is another gauge, like a spiral staircase, marking 1, 2 or 3 cups so you can be more precise with lower usage, good for energy saving. It's also very quiet, the first few times I used it I came back to check I'd switched it on.It's like a whisper, and the sound it makes it quite soothing. The lid stays firmly in place when you pour water out, no danger of it coming loose and being scalded by steam. It's a beautiful kettle and a very efficient one.

It is not often that a product lives up to the advertising hype or the hype printed on the box but this Russel Hobbs Legacy Quiet Boil electric kettle is one of the few.It claims it can boil a cup of water in 45 seconds and it does.It claims it is quieter than a kettle without quiet boil technology and it certainly is an awful lot quieter than my existing kettle. This may be particularly useful in modern open plan kitchen/dining/living spaces when kitchen noise may be a problem. It claims it can save energy and the ability to boil just one cup is how this is done; other kettle may also be able to also boil just one cup however the three “red petals” (shown in photo)inside the kettle make gauging 1,2 or 3 cups quite easy. The pyramid shape is quite striking and the polished chrome body is nice enough for even posh kitchens, the metallic band around the power base is also a nice touch.Nothing to fault.

With a "nod" to history of the kettle by acknowledging design aspects of the 1st automatic kettle, a (confirmed !) non drip spout & a the ability to accurately fill and consequently boil the right amount of water for 1,2, or 3 235ml cups of water .. 1x cup will be boiled in under 60 seconds ! Total capacity is 1.7L of waterEasy & not uncomfortable to hold, quieter than previous kettles, theirs, or mine it's really noticeable that effort has been made to ensure the Legacy boils as quietly as the designers have been able to allow for the very reasonable cost.A 360 degree location base allows it to sit anywhere in your kitchen and still be able to be picked up / put down /positioned whether you are left or right handed.Nothing with this kettle to not like .. apart from the Black showing up water marks far more than the Red, Cream or Steel finish.

Bought the kettle after we had returned from a self catering holiday cottage which had this model in the open plan lounge/kitchendiner. It was so quiet I had to have one. Reading some of the reviews mentioning a plastic taste from the filter, I tried it with and without the filter in place and found no difference, we have no problem with scaling in our area but left the filter in place as I noticed the kettle is a little noisier without it. The first kettle delivered developed a fault after a few weeks ( taking too long turn off when boiled) but immediately Amazon came to the rescue and a replacement was delivered the next day, this 2nd kettle has been fine and works well.I love its design and the black fits in perfectly with my kitchen. Despite the faulty kettle I still have no problem recommending this product.
