I have had 2 cats who have suffered from FLUTD, One blocked twice and the second time he had to be put to sleep which was truly horrendous. I would not wish his suffering on any creature, let alone a much beloved pet and it is truly shocking how quickly they can go downhill (no signs of illness in morning, by the time I got home from work he was in extreme pain and beyond help). My other cat has fortunately not blocked yet but has had 2 instances of UTIs/Cystitis.There are several risk factors for FLUTD- Male cats are more likely to block because of the shape of the urinary tract and a blockage is a life threatening emergency. The other main factors are being overweight, being indoor cats, stress and a dry food diet.My current FLUTD cat is very particular about his food and will only lick wet food and not really eat it. Having a urinary care dry food is great as I know he will eat it and with the price you obviously don't want to be throwing this stuff out. He is on this primarily with a few pouches a week of wet food and a few treats here and there (you should limit their diet to just this for best results but unless he is unwell it is OK to let them have a small amount of treats like fresh chicken etc and lets face it, he'll help himself otherwise)This food will increase urine production, which helps to dilute the urine and prevent crystals forming, changes the PH of the urine to dissolve crystals that have formed and increases the amount of water they will drink. Most cats really like the flavour from what I've seen.Be aware that this is not a 100% fail safe. The cat I lost was on this food and still went to the vet once every 2-3 months for UTIs- some cats simply do not respond well to any kind of treatment. It is best to use this in conjunction with other methods- if your cat if overweight like mine, they need to go on a diet. If they seem to suffer bouts of urinary issues following any stressful situation (vet trips, house moves etc) then try to limit stress as much as possible and use a product like Zylkene (natural calming tablets) or Felliway for events like fireworks night, parties, Christmas, vet trips etc to help to reduce the stress levels. Always have a clean litter box available. Let them outside if at all possible. Give them more toys and areas in the house that are just for them (beds, hideaways, trees etc)This is available cheaper elsewhere online if you look about which is why I don't buy direct from Amazon. However a 3.5Kg bag lasts me a little over 2 months for one cat so despite being expensive, it does last. You don't need to feed as much with this as with cheaper brands.I also always have a painkiller at home for my cat which is prescribed by the vet and I know the dosing. This means whenever he first shows signs of litter tray issues I can immediately provide pain relief which is often enough to help him through at first sign and avoids emergency vet trips. My vet understands this and is really good at making sure I always have a supply for if I need it and a good relationship with a vet is absolutely essential for any pet owner.

Two years ago my lovely, fluffy tom cat started acting unusual. He was constantly in and out of the litterbox, and licking his groin area, he wasn't interested in his food, and was sat with his legs lifted in the air, in a cool corner of the bathroom, looking thoroughly miserable. He then started straining to pee on the kitchen floor, but nothing was happening. We knew the signs - he'd been having issues with urinary crystals on and off for 4 years prior and had been on numerous medications from the vets. Previously, he had endured the same symptoms but was able to pass SOMETHING, even if it was bloody liquid, so when he was straining to pee outside the litter box (they sometimes associate the pain with said litter box),we gently encouraged him and put down some puppy pads. As this can be fatal in male cats, we then made an emergency appointment at the vets & rushed him in.This time it was serious, and they kept him in on a drip overnight. As he is an incredibly anxious cat with new people, we received a call the next morning to come and pick him up to recover at home. They then informed us that he would be on this food for the rest of his life. The cost of the food isn't cheap, especially from the vets, but it is SO worth it! Especially when considering that our last vet bill was almost £400 (including treatment and overnight stay). We now have a subscribe and save order with Amazon, and our cat hasn't has ANY issues in 2 years, even during stressful times, such as having the house redecorated or when we go away on holiday. These events would always trigger his urinary issues before. We have also put our other cat on on the same food, as they tend to steal from one another's bowls anyway. The part I found most surprsing was that BOTH of our very fussy cats are perfectly happy to eat these biscuits! I originally had them on the meat variation, but our tom cat seemed to get bored and stop eating it.If I had to state a negative side, it would be that the 6kg version used to be £36 on Amazon, but Royal Canin seem to have stopped producing this variation, so we've opted for the smaller bag, which usually lasts us about 6-8 weeks (there is also a 7kg version available). All in all, I honestly can't recommend this food enough, it has removed all our previous anxieties about when our boy would next become ill, we have two very happy cats, and no more hefty vet bills!

Having gone twice through the bladder stones with 2 of my boys, they have ended up on Royal Canin Urinary diet (initially recommended by my vet).My older one has been on it since 2005, and is thriving, and never had a relapse, thanks God. He was only about 3 yrs old when he was diagnosed. In 2011, same thing happened to my other cat who is about 9yrs old. Emergency treatment + Hopital stay = £750 :( Gone on Royal canin as well and thriving, no relapses.I cannot recommend this food more. For bladder stones, I don't think there is anything better out there. Someone I know whose cat was on Hills for same condition had at least 6 relapses.I advised her to start on Royal Canin immediately.I just wash it was more affordable so that I could feed all my cats on it, but at ~£40 per 6kg its on a pricey side, so only given to my 2 boys affected. Strangely my 3rd boy (and the girls) never suffered, even though all on same diet initially, so genetics must be playing the role as well, but also he seems to drink more water then the 2 affected. water is a must for this condition, so I bought some extra Drinkwell cat fountains and they love it.

Great stuff - has certainly improved the life of my male cat no end, in the sense that he's no longer needing a vet to empty his bladder for him. His sister couldn't care less, however; and in my book that's a success. My two are greedy sods and compared to the rubbish I was feeding them previously (a mistake which nearly cost me their lives) this goes a lot further - I free feed dry food as well as selective wet feeding and they're stuffed after substantially less food than previously, which does help offset the cost.Speaking of which - you can get this elsewhere for cheaper but you need to spend over £100 to make any real saving; and of course this is delivered promptly with a decent courier as you'd expect from Amazon Prime,so I'm happy to plump for the compromise of not having to put my annual salary into cat food just to drop the price by £2/kg.In short - the cats love it, they're healthy, it's not horrifically expensive and it's stopped my ginger tom from eating so much he's sick everywhere so as a result this single product has made my house a much nicer place to be.

Would like to point out that this should be a prescription only food as part of treatment recommended by a veterinarian after examining you're cat. If fed just because it can exaserbate underlying issues and can ultimately put cats into renal failure its recommended as a treatment basis and cats should routinely be monitored by a vet and urine checked regularly to see if this is actually helping to dissolve crystals and increase acidity in the urine. This is from a veterinary nurse that has trained for 3 years and has taken nutrition courses from royal cabin. As for daylight robbery of course its cheaper on line vets will buy in for specific patients whereas online shops will buy bulk and be able to sell it cheaper as they don't have just a few clients on it.Use you're brains people!

My male cat Yoshi suffers from cronic phantom cystitus (unknown cause) and since switching to this food he lives a happy cystitus free life. He will be two years old in April 2016.We also have another cat Smudge who is more on the elderly side, but the vet assured me that they can both eat this food - so no having to seperate at meal times etc. Both of them absolutely love it, even more so than the James Wellbeloved they were on.If your cat is suffering from chronic cystitus then I reccomend soimething like cystophan or similar to sprinkle over the food just for an initial boost. I would always do that with my cat Yoshi at first, but following a stint in hospital recently where my husband just put the food down without the capsule he has been just fine so not a necessity.

I have a 12 year old male cat who had a build up of crystals a year ago and ended up in a great deal of pain and in the vets. He was put on this diet for 6 weeks until the crystal build up had cleared up (with tablets).Fudge (my cat) had previously tried a couple of dried foods and not been too keen. He also was not keen on wet food and quite fussy. As soon as I put him on this however he has been like a changed cat. I can honestly say he now cry's for his food, is far less grumpy than he was and also drinking much more water (I also bought him a fountain!) to ensure he does not get ill again.Been on the food over a year now and if he runs out he refuses to eat wet food or other dry anymore. Not as cheap as some foods but he is much happier and healthier!

Bladder stones are quite common in middle-aged neutered male cats. If your cat has suffered from them you will know how serious this problem is. Without prompt (& expensive) veterinary treatment death is often the outcome. My cat Ozzy had bladder stones at the age of six. My vet recommended Royal Canin, which prevents the formation of stones in the bladder. At first we tried the meaty pouches but Ozzy wouldn't eat them. Fortunately he loves the dried formula. Buying it from the vet was very expensive, but this supplier is far cheaper. My vet said Ozzy must be fed only on this for the rest of his life to avoid the problem cropping up again. It's obviously a good-quality feed as Ozzy is thriving on it.In fact he might have to try the diet version before long!

I used to buy the smaller bags for €40 in France. I thought I was ordering the same thing but realised that 6kg is a LOT of cat food and I was only receiving 1.5kg for the same money in France (Thieving *&^*s!)Our cat suffers from cystitis when stressed. The symptoms came back with a vengeance shortly after the cat met my mother. Within a week she was peeing dust! We tried some biscuits from the local pet shop which claim to deal with urinary infections (made by James Wellbeloved - I don't think that's his real name!!!) But they didn't do anything. So we ordered these Royal Canin biscuits again. They arrived quickly and cured the cystitis immediately. Our kitty is now p**sing several times a day as she should (I will upload a video later)

Our cat Otis is a male neutered chap and last year he was very very ill with bladder stones, after 3 days in the pets hospital and all manner of tubes he came home and we were £600 worse off. He was not insured, but bearing in mind he was a rescued cat and the premiums for these are quite high due to poor medical history, we actually broke even on what we would have spent on insurance.Anyway, the vet recommended this food.We are now on our third bag! and no more stones. We tend to mix his daily ration of Royal canin with 1 of the Lidl cat food pate tins. His weight is good and his coat is shiny and smooth. All in all back to his old self. Wish we had know about these last year!!

Been using this for years to feed my ginger tom Garfield (who is sitting on my lap as a write this). The price from the vets at one time was excellent... £25 for 6KG, but I remember several years back the price doubled so for a while now I've been getting it online for aruond £35-£40.It prevents blockages from occuring in the urinary tract plus the nutritional support it provides is excellent. On top of that the cats love it and if other cats eat it, it won't do them any harm... in fact it'd probably do them a load of good.Excellent product with a good quantity. Price is reasonable but I wouldn't pay more than £40 for it - otherwise I'd look elsewhere. Lasts several months.

bought this for my male cat with a possible urinary tract infection - recommended by my vet ... my cat seems fully recovered now but I have continued to purchase this as all of my male cats love this...It is very good nutritionally . the cats don't require a large amount for good health and can have this with just a small bit of other food added for variety... They also now drink more water - which is good..a good price too ... and much cheaper than the vet's pricealso seems more expensive than buying Whiskas or Go Cat etc but works out better as the cats need less .. eat every morsel and don't tire of the flavour...and stay healthy.

After my cat having 2 serious bouts of urinary crystals/ cystitis. Vets recommended certain foods to help stop this. Problem is, the cat hated them. i have two cats and the one who was sick is not the fussy one. I researched and researched and after reading reviews I got this one. Yes its a bit more expensive but it's totally worth it. I feed both my cats on this and they absolutely love it. The bag for two cats (one of whom is a hungry cat) lasted me just over a month. It fills them up and I wasnt even feeding them as much as I normally would with other brands. Definitely sticking to this from now on. Excellent product!

My cat has been living on this for about four years now ever since she developed struvite crystals. It made her better in no time and she has never developed them since. Whilst it may seem initially expensive, it actually works out cheaper than regular food as this is so rich that they actually don't require very much of it a day. I only deducted one star because it would be nice if there were a couple more flavours as I can't help feeling sorry for the poor mite having the same flavour of food every day! Having said that she's never gone off it and I also treat her to some moist food a couple of nights a week!

The cat has urinary problems, so this food deals very effectively with that problem: before, we were having to take her to the vet every month for an expensive cure for cystitis and she was in pain - not good. However, she absolutely loves the taste of these biscuits and gobbles them up, begging for more all the time, and was getting the size of a small house. Had to switch to the low-calorie version (not available on Amazon) to take the excess flab off. She still loves the taste of the low-calorie version, but not so much that she constantly begs so hard you're scared she will gnaw your arm off.
