I am a bit of a pen geek and probably have ten times more pens than most (normal) people.I've been doing calligraphy on and off for about 30 years and have tried a few different pens, but usually I've gone for the mid level calligraphy sets, where you get three nibs and a pen for about £15-£25. I had the old Osmiroid pens (no longer available in UK), and a few Sheaffer sets and I also currently use Cross, Waterman and Lamy fountain pens. I never really noticed that calligraphy pens could be bought for a lot more money, so I thought it was about time to splash out and try something a bit more expensive and see whether the extra few pounds would give me a noticeably better pen.I was blown away when I put this pen to paper. The casing of the pen is cheap and plastic, but what it lacks in external build quality it more than makes up for with internal performance, i.e. you're not paying for a fancy casing, you're paying for a pen that gives excellent strokes. The nib is stainless steel and incredibly smooth. It is in fact one of the smoothest ink pens I've ever written with. Within a few minutes I was able to achieve levels of style and fluidity that had eluded me all these years. I didn't want to put the pen down, and kept wanting to try more and more styles and practice my flourishes, and the more I used it the better I got and the better I got the more I just wanted to keep on going...I would highly recommend this pen

The Rotring Art Pen is a modern take on a traditional calligraphy pen. Eschewing wood, feathers, dip action or any of the other things that been used in pens over the last fifteen hundred years, Rotring have opted to construct the most effective method of producing fine calligraphy with little fuss.In keeping with the Isograph and Rapidograph pens that have been Rotring's staple for a generation, these are solid plastic construction with an engineered feel to them. The pen feels good in the hand, and the form has clearly been carefully tested for ease of writing.Three nibs are supplied. The only downside of this set is that you can't keep a cartridge in a nib when you swap it out,as there is no place in the case for it. Each nib has its own top, but you can't put the nibs in the tops in the case. I suspect that many users will abandon the case (which is a pity) and have each nib with its own cartridge and top in a jar or something similar, and swap out the handle. These are lovely to write with, and produce a clean, smooth result.I remember when these first came out, and have intended for years to get one. I'm glad I finally did.

I love Rotring and have for many years. I even have this pen from years ago with the drawing nib, so I can't understand why I have never thought to check if they sell calligraphy pens before. I have used so many different pens over the years and it is difficult to find one that doesn't dry up if you don't use it, doesn't leak or blob, and writes smoothly. I waited to post this review as I wanted to wait to see how easy it was to pick up the pen and write with it again after 3 days of non-use. Brilliant. It worked straight away whereas with other pens either the ink has leaked out of the cartridge or has stopped flowing, or has dried into the nib. I will stick with Rotring now, which I have used in one form or another since art college far too many years ago! Oh and it writes very smoothly making your calligraphy work much easier.

Your have three different nibs and stocks and one barrel and three lids. The lids don't 'click' or screw onto the stocks you are not using and they don't fit back into the retainers once the lids are fitted hence once you have attacked your cartridges to the stocks the nibs are open as the lids keep coming off. Annoying. The cartridges as very small, no more than 1.5 inches in length. That said the nibs are a good quality and glide across the paper and for someone who doesn't want to keep stopping and loading the nib with ink this works as means I can keep practising to the end of the letter or word. A good start for a novice in calligraphy or just for plain writing.I have bought to art pen filler adapter to allow me to use other bottled inks. The quality and performance are good.

A very nice, quality art pen - I bought this for calligraphy, specifically for Arabic script and it performs very well. There is a fine flow of ink, without any sudden 'globules' that other pens often produce (that spoil the work). Italic script and Arabic letters are much better when you have a good ink pen with a proper nib such as this pen has. This comes with two cartridges, but I bought a 'converter' for taking ink from a bottle, which should make it more economical. That said, the cartridges last a reasonable amount of time. I would add that in my experience, the pen has a good feel, its barrel is just large enough to hold easily in the fingers without them cramping but not so large thatit feels awkward to handle.

Buying this set is a lot cheaper than buying the individual pens - yes, you have to change the nibs as you only get one handle but for most people this will be a small hassle. Comes with a box of cartridges which should last awhile. The pens do have a very plastic feel but then again, they are what they are. The nibs write smoothly with three widths. The narrowest isn't overly narrow - so just a little too wide for general writing.I used to have a lovely 6 nib Osmiroid set - sadly they are no longer in business but sets like this do partly fill the gap - overall recommended and cheap enough that you can give as a gift to possibly get someone interested in calligraphy.

These pens are brilliant and have helped my calligraphy skills. If you buy them you must learn how to clean the pens as the cartridge ink tends to dry out if not used every day.My top tip is to also buy the Rotring Artpen Converter and use bottled ink like you used to do with old fashioned fountain pens.I bought a bottle of Waterman's Tender Purple ink which is a lovely colour for personal letters (and turquoise for anything else) and found that the bottled ink flows better from the 2.3mm nib, which uses a lot of ink. If you use the cartridges with this wide nib you run the risk of running out of ink, mid word, and thus spoiling your work.

Precisely what was required. This 1.9 nib is absolutely perfect for calligraphy - the two that bracket it, the 1.1 and the 2.3 are too narrow and too broad respectively for general use (in our opinion). The shape and weight of this pen make it undeniably pleasureable to use. Entirely free of the pfaff I remember from my school days. Ink flow is very much better than many vastly more expensive fountain pens, but this is not an ornament but a workaday tool, and in this case at a more than reasonable price (£8.07). Arrived very quickly, and as the proprietor was having a clear out, came with a handful of free cartridges.

It's okay. Were it not for the overlong, but elegant tapered barrel it would make a decent fountain pen to pocket. Its cartridge ink refills are handy, but the ink flow is not entirely predictable as sometimes it's an instant writer and others not. Sometimes the flow can be as if a tap has been turned on. Must develop the habit of having a scratch paper to determine that day's variables before getting serious.

You're never going to get results from a fountain pen as good as a dip pen but the Rotring pens are good quality for the price. I bought a couple of ink adapters, so that I can use other ink, and they are very good. As with all nibs, they need sharpening, with a sharpening stone, to get a fine line . I find them handy for a quick bit of practice.

Very nice little package from a very good brand. Good quality nibs which glide over the surface of the paper. Easy to change with Black ink supplied in the package. Once opened, the pens come in a separate storage/presentation box. The pens themselves clip into the box, keeping them secure and in place. very pleased with this purchase.

I knew this pen already as I had one many years ago and now, taking calligraphy more seriously, I was kindly surprised at finding this product still on the market. I bought it immediately without hesitation and with three nibs I've got the right tools for sure.It writes well, it's comfortable and looks nice.

Bought this on offer, it really is a great set. I had tried a cheap set which was useless so it really is worth spending a bit extra. I went onto purchase the Rotring fine pen and an extra fine nib for writing and drawing. Beautiful ink flow and smooth nibs, effortless and a pleasure to work with.

This is a great set for anyone interested in Calligraphy, it is produced to the usual high standards of all Rotring products and includes everything needed for creative writing.I do calligraphy as a hobby and have not found a better set of pens for the money .... Highly recommended.

Just "rediscovered" the Rotring calligraphy pen after many years away - and instantly reminded how good they are, worth every penny.Deducted one star for the bonkers design that makes these an inch or two longer than a normal pen length, so they don't fit well in your pocket.
