Edit: Im almost done with this, and I dont need to edit much here.I wanted to do pros and cons, but instead its just come out in points:- Graphics are pretty good, and sometimes the panoramics are stunning. Close up character cuts are well done and Jason looks great.- Fighting system: You could put this in good or bad, but its not too complicated with the mouse and keyboard. Just clicking your direction and using shift and alt sometimes as well. I say this could be bad because some people dont have that coordination, but if you do, no problem. You can also choose 3 difficulty levels, so if you are getting worked, you can change to an easier setting. Basically, its a dressed up hack and slash.- Weapons/items: So far I have found a few new items, and it seems like a pretty good system. You can save all your gear on your ship and use whatever you want if you pick it back up, so you dont lose stuff. However, if you a "Titan Quest"-type stuff junkie where you want to have 10 different slots and find something better for one of them after each fight, this is not it. But the stuff you get here has meaning and usually a story behind it.- Story: Ive heard some serious ripping on this in some review sites (to the point where they have given it a 2/10 just on the weight of the inaccuracies!), but it doesnt matter. The story is there and it works. Sure there are some definite inaccuracies regarding some of the mythology....but hey....its mythology ffs! Maybe a bit boring, but put yourself in Jason's shoes and it works. Almost at the end now, the story is unique, THIS IS NOT A HISTORY LESSSON PEOPLE!!! (sorry for the yell).- RPG: This isnt as clear, and as you go you have to make decisions on how to interact with your surroundings. You can be a stern and serious to compassionate and caring and everywhere in between. Im not sure how the decisions will affect my future character, but Ill hopefully come back with an edit for that. EDIT: The main role playing element is choosing which god to follow in your choices. By choosing different gods to honor, you gain points to spend on "attributes" for various things. I highly recommend looking at which way you want to develop your fighting style before starting the game, so you know which decisions will help you get there.- NPC's: So far Ive only got Hercules with me, and yes its true, he will randomly just say stupid lines, but who cares. EDIT: All the NPCs are kind of lame, but at least you get someone fighting alongside you most of the time. Achilles with all his vanity has been my favorite. He is constantly hitting on the women, even in totally incorrect situations.- Movement: This is one of the most annoying things about the game. Sometimes you have to run all the way back to wherever you were for a quest. This is a game design thing to add those extra minutes in there for the 30-40 hour game experience, when it could have been cut down with an auto-travel feature, but not here. There is still a map, so you wont get lost.- Other: say what you want when you find out about Jason's ship, but I love the idea!- Be prepared for LOTS of dialogue. I think you spend more time with dialogue and cutscenes than with running even, but they are very important, and you can see at least a great deal of effort went into them. Conclusion: The game is a bit disjointed in places, the characters are not that accurate, too much time wasted on running from place to place, but despite all that I am having fun playing it! If you are a stickler for historical accuracy, stay far away. If you are a gamer looking for some fun and like to get into your characters, then this game will at least give you a few hours of fun, if not pure enjoyment!

Firstly, I will say if you are not a fan of Greek mythology you may rate this much lower. However, I myself am a massive fan of ancient Greek mythos that I have to rate it four stars. You play as Jason, the legend of the Golden Fleece story, who's wife is murdered on their wedding day. This sparks off his adventure to revive her, being blessed by the four Gods Ares, Athena, Apollo and Hermes before he departs. Joined by his best friend Hercules and subsequently joined by many characters from Greek mythology, including the legendary Achilles, who accompany him on the Argo and are the aforementioned Argonauts. The combat is pretty generic, there are three weapon type. The mace, the sword and the spear. The mace is the heavy weapon, slow but strong. The sword is the light weapon, weak but fast, and the spear is the ranged weapon, balanced between the two with range but leaves you vulnerable. The levelling system is pretty interesting. The four main gods represent four different aspects of gameplay. Ares represents the mace, Apollo is a passive level tree and Athena the shield and spear, Hermes representing the sword and speed. You can spend levelling points, earned by completing quests and combat challenges, freely in any of these four categories. The conversation system has a Mass Effect feel to it but rather than a 'good' and 'bad' and 'neutral option, the conversation branches are split into four, each God represented. Ares choices are aggressive and tough responses, Athena choices are that of justice, Apollo is all about compassion and Hermes choices are witty and humourous. The levels are pretty linear as its a story based game but there is enough exploration and side quests available to provide a decent amount of longevity. It is more along the lines of the Bioware RPGs, Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age but with a hack and slash combat system.Overall, as a standalone game its a decent story driven RPG. If you enjoy the subject matter, however, you may love seeing your favourite characters and some other interesting characters in a very fun story set in antiquity. If you do not enjoy old ancient Greek mythology, however, the rather generic gameplay might make you feel a bit fleeced, if it weren't so cheap now that is...

As a little girl I loved Sword & Sandal films, and the best of them has to be Jason & the Argonauts. Now thanks to this incredible game I've been transported back to a wonderful childhood world of sword & sorcery and what a fantastic ride it's been. What I was hoping for with this game was pretty much a rip off of God of War but what I got was so so much more. If you're looking for non stop fighting you may be disappointed, there's plenty of fighting and it's brutal when it comes but the fighting takes a back seat to the story and only comes along when it's necessary, when it does it's action packed and thrilling. What I was most happy about is there's no need to get your head and hands round hundreds of button combo's,you can master fighting very quickly and hack your way through your enemies with wild glee, you won't lose out because you're not a hard core gamer and can't do combo's.In between the fighting is your journey through stunning mystical lands on your way to find the fleece and bring back your wife before she's sent to the underworld forever. The characters along the way are full of life, so much so you really get to know them and here's the incredible part that sets this game way above anything I've ever played, you make the decisions, what you say and do affects everything, you can be a great King or a ruthless killing machine set on vengeance. The pace of this game may not be for everyone, you need patience to get the most out of it, you'll spend long periods of time investigating crimes and helping others who'll later help you on your quest. But if you want a game that puts you firmly in control of every aspect, that lets you battle like a gladiator in the area and sets a visual feast of magic lands and fantasy creatures before your eyes then dive in, you are going to love it.As a foot note I found NO bugs in the game at all, game play was smooth and perfect.A warning though, it will sap away hours of your life and can lead to you stomping round the house muttering, I am your King and you will pay me tribute, but hey that could just me!Enjoy, and may the Gods show you favour.

This is a good game. First this is supposedly an action rpg(role playing game). It posses as a hybrid between God of War and Mass Effect, does it accomplish this? Well a little on both sides. The combat feels like a slightly sluggish version of God of War and the role playing aspects feel like a toned down version of Mass Effect. The story takes place in ancient Greece and its fairly good tale. At the start the love of your life Alcimai is killed during your wedding ceremony. Outraged you consult oricale of Delphi, she then tells you that the only way to revive Alcimai is to fetch the artefact the golden fleece. It's a good take on the classic myth.Throughout the story you will engage in conversations with the game's inhabitants using Mass Effect like conversation trees. All of this very good and rare combat sequences are really fun with bucket loads of blood splattering across the screen in slow motion. However the game does present a few bugs like the frame rate will stutter for no apparent reason and when you run down stairs it sometimes looks like your wearing sort of hover shoes. This would have been passable if the game was set 4,000 years later. The presentation in this game is mixed. The main characters in the game look great but the people surrounding you e.g. towns folk are not so good and all look the same. The voice acting is great giving you insiteful views into each character where the graphics lack. All and all Rise of the Argonauts is a good game if you like a good story and a bit of blood ,but a great game if your into Greek mythology.*Please excuse in spelling or grammar errors in this review as I am only 13.

I was reluctant to buy this at full price, and got it when the price went down. Now I should stress this now I do enjoy a good Greek Mythology story, and in that sense this was great- however for others this could be a downfall. You spend more time interacting with other characters more than getting involved in action. The action itself is quite enjoyable but can get repetitive after a bit, but the system used to get special abilities by dedicating notable deeds to gods is an aspect which I certainly found enjoyable, and the Constellation system used in part to track progress is an interesting addition. The thing which drew me more into this game was the soundtrack- which was of a very high quality and kudos to the composer for that. However, this isn't at all perfect- on a number of occasions my character fell through the map, an invisible wall blocked my path for not killing the last, frozen enemy, and numerous other glitches which can spoil the enjoyment of the game. Also the graphics are not up to the standard of other 360 games, which while it did not pose a problem for me, it may put off others.A game which is largely story driven- good for those interested in the subject, but drags on for those with little interest in the story and looking at going stuck into action.

The design is generally excellent and the graphics vary a little the overall standard is pretty good. The gameplay is pretty much hack and slash rpg, it hasn't anywhere near the depth of Oblivion but is more rpg than the console baldurs gate games. The non player characters are pretty static and the voice acting is average. Where the game stands out is in the depth of story and richness of the setting. The character upgrade system is interesting also, while it pretty much comes down to experience points and levelling up it is amsked fairly well in a system of tributes to good for divine favour. There is great scope for customising Jason and playing very differently on replays. This is comparable to Bioware rpgs, if that isn't a jigh recommendation to rpg fans I don't know what is. If you like story driven action games then this is well worth checking out.

At the start of the game i found myself thrown straight into the action fighting somekind of demonic force atacking your island. this game is very enjoyable from the start and if you like exploring places this is a game for you, even if you dont find anything.i have liked this game from the begining.you arn't short on music and astonishing graphics, the designers have planed well, for example solders helmets are embroided down to the very last detail.if you also like choosing where you spend your atributes this is what your looking for. so you can chose what god you spend it on like hermes, apolo, athena and aries. (abit like titian quest)This is a good have if you like historical fighters.if you are more of a shooters person like i was you may find it hard to adjust to the game play.overal i found it brilliant.

I have to agree with some of the other reviewers here that this could have been so much better. However saying that, I enjoyed this game a lot. Unlike some other games it had a great story that was not over in 5 minutes with some good and innovative ideas. You start with Jason and his goatee (famous Greek beard?) and Hercules who closely resembles a mountain and build up a good variety and shape of argonauts. The power up idea is a good one as well. The bad points were a few glitches, very dark areas that you need to set the brightness right up for and some pretty average graphics that look a little dated now. However for originality and enjoyment, 4 stars for me.

Well, I started the game on the Sunday morning and finishe it by Tuesday night! And that's not saying its a short game, its just adictive and has a really good story and gameplay. It's not dead pan easy, but its also not too difficult, that you'll get fed up of playing. The story pans out well through the game and the quality of the game is also superb. I was a big fan of assasin's creed and am just a big a fan of this.Anyone who likes a nice fighting game, with a good story, then ur in for a treat with this game, you also make decsions during the game that effect the outcome of the route u follow.

I started getting error while installing the game, initially i thought that the issue might be with OS and tried below mentioned points one after the other1. Formatted my drive and Reinstalled win 7 professional OS - no use was getting same error2. Changed my hard disc to ssd and tried installing the game - no use was getting same error3. Bought new dvd drive and tried installing the game - no use was getting same error4. Tried installing the same onto XP sp2. It worked well without any issue.

It's a short-ish game and it's quite simplistic and abusive of Greek Myth, but it is a lot of fun, it's easy to pick up and play and you can come back to it.It'll never be a perfect game and it's no triple A title but it's just plain fun hack 'n' slash with a few really big monsters & some interesting characters.

20.8.2010

though unreal engine was probably not the best choice for the game, and there were a couple of serious bugs towards the end, the story (though not completely in line with the original argonauts tale), overall design of the game and actual gameplay were absolutely awesome
