It is a truth most universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of hairy shoulders must be in want of a beautician...I've had IPL on my shoulders about 7 years ago, I was fortunate to win 6 free sessions on my shoulders and it worked. After the first treatment I went back after a month, the next time was about 6 weeks and so on. Very early on the difference in hair regrowth was evident by how often I needed the next treatment. The course finished and as loath as I am to admit it I just could not afford the cost of the treatments to carry on.Enter the RIO IPL Pro Hair Removal SystemIt is a nice size 11 inches high which makes it very convenient for storage and this is important asthis is not something which is designed to be used every day.The instructions are good and while the accompanying DVD has a slight "airplane safety video" feel to it, it is short and useful to have as a back upSo, the first use.It comes with a razor which is used to shave the area(s) you want to use the IPL on as the pulse lights work better when it can go directly to the root. So, shoulders are shaved. The wand on the device comes with a nice long lead and I thought this would be more than enough to simply do my shoulders. I was slightly wrongYou see the main problem with this is you do need a mirror and a base to put the device on, all near a plug socket. I found that even doing my shoulders I needed a mirror, you could attempt to do it solely by touch and memory but I don't think you would be doing a service to it.So, after rearranging myself and the device I started again. There are 5 levels of power and the booklet tells you roughly which power setting you need. Basically, after the 24hr patch test, you go for the setting below the one that causes slight discomfort. For me this was setting number 4The instructions make out the area over the light source will leave an indention on your skin, a slight rectangle which will assist in being able to cover the whole area you are wanting to. I didn't find this at all.You have to press relatively firmly on the skin for the safety sensors to work but I still found no indention on my skin at all. However, with the use of a mirror I was able to use it to (what I believe) a decent coverageThe safety aspects are quite strict (thankfully so I would imagine). Every time you turn the key to start the device a specific key code / button code is needed. To increase the power must be done in increments to make sure you never accidentally use a higher setting on your skin. And the wand itself has 4 sensors, all of which must be on the skin before the light changes to blue which means it is ready to administer the ILP. You can't just "shoot" light beams while re-enacting your particular favourite Star Wars sceneWhile administering the device, you get a terrific flash of red, you then move the wand onto the next bit, wait approx 5 seconds and then press the button again. My first shoulder was a bit of a work in progress however by the time I was on the second shoulder I found myself much more in control and am very confident that I have been able to get a good 99% coverageIt doesn't hurt, there is a slight (and I do mean slight) stinging sensation which goes almost immediately. After an hour, there is a slight feeling of mild sunburn as the skin gets used to the intense light. You are using a technique which burns the hair follicle and this shouldn't be forgotten nor treated lightly, however I've been waxed and sugared in the past and please believe me this is no comparison whatsoeverYou do get a slight smell of burning hair, but to be honest, I found this quite reassuring. To do my shoulders took about 15 minutes, and I firmly believe the next time will be quicker as I get more and more familiar with it.Obviously some body parts will be easier whereas others may require the help of a very understanding (and slightly sadistic) friend or partner. You shouldn't use this if your skin tone / ethnicity is Black or Asian, nor if the hair you are hoping to remove is white, grey, red or very light blondeFor the best results it should be used to remove dark hair on pale skinAnd to the main question, for the price does this work? To which the answer is...I can't tell you. This thing is an investment, you need to use it (on average) every month or when you notice the hair has regrown enough to shave it off and restart the process. 6 months is the basic amount of time to become hairless so as yet I can't comment on it's efficacy.I will update this as I know myself but so far so good. Also, of course as this is predominantly directed towards women, if you need an excuse to justify it, you can always say it works very well for men as well. In fact the instructions actually say that because men's hair tends to be thicker, then men may suffer a little bit more pain than women! There you have it, proof that we men suffer for our looks!UPDATEHave used twice now on my shoulders and have already noticed a marked improvement in hair regrowth. Much slower and already a bit sparcer as well. But it is still a bit awkward to use on your own.I got my other half to bite the bullet and do my back for me and it was excellent, the whole back was done in approx 10 minutes

I was really excited to invest in a IPL hair removal system; you simply zap the unwanted hairs and they go for good, right? Erm, I quickly learnt that it's not so straightforward as I previously thought.Don't get me wrong; it does work, but it requires the user to stick to a treatment routine and lots of patience. Other reviews here provide detailed step by step instructions, so I'm going to discuss the pros and cons I experienced, so you'll be able to decide if this is the right product for you.The main convenience I found was that the device has five power settings, which I thought was really advanced for a home IPL system. The information guide gives you a good idea of which setting would be best for your skin type,so you don't have to struggle with a choice of one or two settings - both of which may have been unsuitable. The IPL system does not hurt the way waxing or epilators do and you can't slice yourself into ribbons like with razors. My skin did tingle as I used the IPL and it was left a bit red for a day, but I actually quite like the sensation and the redness was fairly mild. This can treat all unwanted body hair.Waxing and epilators hurt in varying degrees, depending on the area being treated and certain, umm, delicate areas can hurt so much that you may just go ahead and use a razor instead, which defeats the whole purpose of going for waxing sessions or using a epilator.Once you have completed the treatment cource that is it - you're permanently hairless. You'll never have to reach for a razor, pay for waxing or endure using an epilator ever again. Now for the drawbacks; it is a rather large and heavy machine and plugging it in, entering the code, then waiting for the light sequence to finish to signify that it is safe to use is an annoying niggle. Between work and family I don't get a lot of free time, so I would love to switch it on and go.You have to keep on treating the same area over and over again every few weeks, as although fine, regrowth does continue for at least six months, so yeah, this is not a fix-it-quick solution. This may not be an issue for some people; I found that placing the device down securely near a plug socket meant that I had to stretch out the wand a lot and trying to place it securely onto the body area that I wanted to treat required flexibility I didn't know I had.--------------------In conclusion--------------------If you can afford the device and can [and will] stick to a treatment routine, this will work out for you, as if you kept paying for salon sessions it would be costlier and waxing and epilating does hurt. Using a razor will only give you a day or two with smooth, hair free skin, whereas the results of this will be permanent with patience. But for me? In all honesty I'd rather pay for sessions with a beautician in a salon; All of the safety warnings in the booklets did make me a bit nervous about handling this and, like I mentioned above, stretching the wire and placing the wand flatly on the areas that I wanted to treat required me to be flexible and was practically a workout. And I won't lie; I find it hard to stick to a set time for applying body lotions and such, so sticking to the treatment schedule for this was a real challenge. So I can see myself returning to my epilator in the not-so-distant future, it may hurt a bit, but its fast and doesn't require a few years of yoga training to use.

Hair Remover removes unwanted hair with the use of Intense Pulsed Light technology which when gently placed on the skin, delivers pulses of light to the hair follicle to destroy the root of hair without affecting the area around it. This IPL hair removal device provides quick permanent hair removal and is efficient for use on arms, underarms, legs, back, chest and bikini lines.I know very little about the strengths of this item and after careful consideration decided it was not for me personally as after reading the instructions I saw that you shouldn't really use with very sensitive skin. Therefore in lieu of a more concise review I have tried to list what I can in terms of research on theproduct.Pros:The Intense Pulsed Light destroys the hair rootTreats up to 180 hairs in just a few seconds with a large treatment area (35 mm x 14 mm)Suitable for larger areas such as legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, back and chestIncludes skin contact sensor, ultra fast flashes, security keyApproved for home useCons:Slight reddening of the skin or light patches may occur but they should disappear within 24 hours.Three weeks before treatment and 48 hours after treatment, avoid using sun beds, fake tanning or sunbathing.Price (but in comparison to salon visits it works out cheaper to own your own).Tips on Use:Test your skin for any adverse reaction by doing small patch test on your skin 24 hours before the treatment. When you're ready, shave the area to be treated so the light energy is directed to the hair root and to prevent burning hair on the surface. Turn the device on, enter your security code and press "enable" button then place the wand over the area to be treated. When the skin sensor gets in contact with your skin, press and hold the treatment button to initiate treatment flash. Most users feel a warming effect on the skin after treatment with the Rio IPL as with all light-emitting hair removers.Safety features:The unit must be unlocked using a key.A security button sequence is required to activate the unit.Your first treatment will always be on power level 1 and can only be increased by one level after a treatment is performed. The wand features a bright orange light which will cause you to blink if pointed directly at the eye.Treatment will only take place when all 4 skin sensors are in contact with the skin. The bulb is shielded to avoid any risk of stray light. The aperture includes a UV filter to reduce UV light exposure on the skin. You will need to leave 5 seconds between treatment flashes to allow the unit to fully recharge.Power can only be increased by one level per treatment flash. The skin sensors must be lifted off the skin between treatments to reset the wand.Treat each area only once in each session.Suitable skin types:Not suitable for dark skin tones, for example, those of Afro-Caribbean, black African, Indian or Pakistani descent. Even if your skin tone appears to be suitable on the skin tone chart, do not use if close relations (parents/grandparents) have skin tones as described above. Not suitable for red, light blonde, grey or white hair.

First things first: Tut tut, Amazon - the listing for this item (at least, at the time of writing this review) has NONE of the disclaimers/guidance given by the manufacturer regarding suitability of the IPL system for different skin/hair types. Guidance from the manufacturer website states that you must not use it around the eyes or lips, and mostly importantly, you must not use it (so don't buy it!) if you have the following skin/hair types: Afro-Caribbean, black African, Indian or Pakistani descent. Slightly surprisingly, it also states "Even if your skin tone appears to be suitable on the skin tone chart, do not use if close relations (parents/grandparents) have skin tones as described above".Also please note that the product will not work (or at least not work well) on light blonde, red, grey or white hair - so again, don't buy it if this applies to you. It's big and heavy, you're not going to want to have to return it!Although the device sounds rather frightening, it has multiple security features built in to minimise the risk of accidents (so no using it as a lightsabre. I was a little disappointed, too...). You have to input a security code before the machine will turn on, thus it is unlikely that your children will get their hands on it and give the cat bald patches for jollies. Seriously, though, there are multiple (excellent) safeguards in place to prevent against injuries, which is obviously very important in anything involving lasers or intense light such as IPL.Getting down to actually using the thing, you need to do a patch test first to check it's not going to turn you into a blotchy elephant man/woman, then once that passes without incident you're good to go. Shave the area you're going to treat first (this is to prevent hair fires. Hair fires are bad! I learned this at school in Chemistry class...). The 'treatment wand' - saying 'abracadabra' as you use it is optional, but I enjoyed it - has four sensors on it which must all be in contact with the skin before the light will fire. I note that the other reviewers seem to have had trouble with this, can't honestly say I did, perhaps I am unusually flat?? The treatment itself doesn't hurt, there's a slightly disturbing burning smell and a little warmness but nothing frightening. I did get quite red afterwards, but my skin is quite sensitive so that is probably why.I have noted that there does seem to be less hair growing back in the treated areas, but longer-term it's hard to say whether this will persist. Multiple treatments are required (Rio recommend you use it every two weeks) in order to zap new hairs as different follicles enter their growth phase. I'm not completely convinced it will be as effective as 'real' laser treatment. I was looking at the Amazon listing for another Rio item Rio Salon Laser Tweezer Hair Removal System and that page actually states "Unlike home use IPL (Intense Pulse Light), or heat based hair removal technology, the results of laser hair removal are permanent.", which seems to jar with the information given for this product. As I said, time will tell.

I received this item in November and have been using it every 2 weeks. Since it takes up to 6 months to achieve full effectiveness, I'm pretty impressed already. The hair on my legs is growing back patchy and you can really see it working. I'm very pale with mousy brown hair so was an ideal candidate for it.It's easy to use and lightweight, although it's not exactly tiny! Sometimes it can be hard to get all four sensors on your skin, especially around the ankles. You can get round this by popping your finger under the sensors that aren't connecting with your skin. All in all, a great purchase and I'm excited to see what my legs will look like in another couple of months!

This product really works. I dear say works better than my salon IPL service for which I paid over the months a fortune. It takes patience but the results (bikini, armpits, umbilical area ) are rewarding. after 1 month of using my first machine though it suddenly while working exploded and broke. The customer service was helpful though and the Amazon - Yodel service replaced the machine for a new one.I just hope this new one lives longer. So if you are white coloured skin with dark hair do not hesitate to spend the money.

I got the Rio IPL to treat some small patches of hair on my back and chest. Although I was hesitant to use the product, I tested the product on a single area once a week. Although the hair patches in question were quite light, I started to see results in a matter of weeks. Now the patch has gone I use the Rio once every couple of week and I've remained `hair free'. Needless to say I've recently started using the Rio on other areas and am seeing the same results.

26.4.2012

I've been using this product for around 6 months and the results are now starting to show.To start with it didn't look like it was having any effect at all but I persevered and after a few months I did start to notice results.A few months on again and it seems the benefits are really showing.I am pleased with the product overall but don't expect instant results.

12.11.2017

Arrived fast and at the moment I am pleased with it. Works great for armpits hair, legs(if you are patient, the area is too big), arms and genital area. On face works pretty well too, unless you have hormonal problems. But if you use it every week you can see some improvements.

19.5.2014

It slows my hair growth and allow me to take care of them not more than one time per month. It is very convenient. If I use this device after shaving, I do not have any inflammation on my skin. It is very effective.

1.3.2013

this device is really good and irit decrease my hair overall, but from my experience if the hair appear to the skin in a very steep or acute angle .the IPL will not affect it .

16.2.2013

i chose the rating because as im seeing the product is good and effective on some areas, and not powerful on others, but i do recommend it, easy , safe and cheap.

9.2.2013
