This is an excellent racing game for the Nintendo 3DS, and even now in 2013, two years before it's release, it has no clear competition, except for "Mario Kart 7"."Ridge Racer 3D" keeps the essence of the original arcade game from the nineties, where you need to drift at high speed in order to go from the last position where you always start, to the first one. This is different from modern approaches to arcade racing games. In "Ridge Racer" the learning curve is slower and you will need some time to understand how to master the car. I wouldn't say it's "hard" (and I usually don't like difficult games), but certainly it's not a piece of cake. In this version there's an alternate control for drifting that makes things a little bit easier, but still you need to memorize the tracks.Speaking of tracks, there are 15 in total (most of them recycled from previous games), but you can race them in inverse mode, and contrary to other racing games, they feel like different tracks when you do.Although you have a local multiplayer mode (no online), it seems clear that this game was designed for a one-player experience. The main mode is a Grand Prix that consist of a series of events divided in several races, where you are required to finish in a certain position (one of the first three, one of the first two, or as the winner). Completing an event will allow you to pass to the next one and give you some "cash" that you can use to buy new cars. This game mode alone is pretty long, but you can also play a single event (you can configure how much time you want it to last), or a single race. There's also a "time attack" mode to try to beat your records. The game looks really good. It has the quality of a Dreamcast game with some more modern lighting effects, and it runs smoothly even with the 3D activated. There are certain nice touches like helicopters and planes flying around. The music and sound effects are good to, except for the annoying female voice that speaks to you during the race (fortunately you can turn her volume down).I really like this game, more than I thought I would. I've never been a big fan of the "Ridge Racer" series, but I have played the original in the first Playstation and "Ridge Racer DS", and this one is definitively better. It's the same formula but with improved mechanics and looks. I have also "Mario Kart 7" and "F1 2011" for the 3DS, and "Ridge Racer 3D" is a good complement. I recommend it for those who are looking for a good racing game for their 3DS.I don't give it five stars because only a few tracks are actually new, but this is not an inconvenient if you haven't played other games of the series.

Ridge Racer is my Favourite racing series and i have owned every instalment, so had to get this and was not dissapionted. It has all the elements that make ridge racer the great game it is and has lots of cars and tracks from previous versions. The 3D effect really works great with this game, espesailly on a low setting. The graphics and colour do look a bit flat with the 3d turned off so its best to have it on even at the lowest setting. Because of the speed of the game i find i can only have the 3d on full for a couple of minutes but thats ok as it looks better with the 3d on a lower setting. Due to how well the thumb stick works the controls are very good and responsive, which is great as i find most handheld racers to be a bit awkward to control . The sound is great in the game but cant comment on the music as i always have it turned off. The vioce over is very clear and the engine sounds are very good but the skiding sound effect is not as good as on other versions . This game is big and there are a lot of cars and tracks to unlock through playing the career mode , which can then be used in single race/ singe make races and time trial . One thing that is a bit annoying is that you can only have one profile saved which not good if the 3ds is shared . I have already had to start my game again as my sister started a new game which erased mine. Don't know if this is because of space on the cartridge but it is something i'd like to see changed if they do a sequeal. Overall this is a great racing game that is made even better by being in 3D !!

I was pleasantly surprised by how good ridge racer was. In truth, I hadn't expected it to be anything special, but at launch I picked it up on the spur of the moment. It is now my favourite 3ds launch title excluding super street fighter 4, and is substantially better than the first-party Nintendo launch games! It is basically just an arcade-style racing game, and there are lots of well designed tracks and cool cars to get to grips with. What sets it out from the crowd is that it is very well polished; the 3d effects are stunning, every car handles like a dream and the courses and environments are all very crisp and clear. The 3d adds a lot to the game, as you can really judge where the next corner is,making for some slick drifts.Overall, this is a great game to show off what the 3ds is capable of, and you really do get your money's worth when you play it. The Grand Prix mode lasts forever, and the other modes add a load of hours on top of that. Then there are multiplayer races, which are fab. My only really problem with this game is the lack of online play, which is a missed opportunity.

I purchased this purely because it was on offer, and I hadn't got that many 3DS games, and I'm quite glad I did. I'd played one of the first console based Ridge Racer games an aeon ago and never touched them since as I found it to be probably the most unrealistic racing game ever made (the car and the road seemed to exist in alternate dimensions). Unfortunately this one still has the same flaws, in that the car and the road seem disconnected and you are unable to crash or spin out properly. However, as I wasn't really expecting realism, it was all ok and left me free to enjoy the finer things about the game, namely the 3D and graphics.I was astounded as to how well the 3D works in this game and yes I know dirt won't fly through the screen on rough terrain, but did you really expect it to? All that aside its a good game, but that's all it is. Quite simply there's not enough variety in the cars and tracks, and the in game commentary is UNBELIEVABLY annoying, but graphically its very good, the 3D works well and its a fun pick up and put down racer.

I'm sure you've read lots of reviews of this game and yes, the 3D is flawless, as is the frame rate and the the action during a race.My only criticism is with the street pass feature. Whilst it does download competitors ghost data, it's actually hard to get to and doesn't readily identify itself. The ghost data downloaded my be for a level you've not yet unlocked and it won't be immediately obvious when or where you'll be encountering you street pass ghosts. The courses are beautiful and if you also have Pilotwings Resort, there's a few surprises that will appear on the courses once you have played both games. The feature to use either you Mii or to take a photo using the 3DS camera to use as your profile is a nice feature. The commentary during the races is amusing at first but can become repetitive and annoying after a while.Overall, this is by far the best racing game currently available for the 3DS and a truly great demo of the 3D capabilities of the console but the street pass features could do with being a little more transparent.

It was my first Ridge Racer game in over 10 years, but I found it to be very playable and full of content. The graphics looks quite good and the 3D effect is great. The controls are slick and the tracks are all quite enjoyable too. My only complaint with this game is that the AI can be particularly funny on the more difficult races. That is to say the races can often feel scripted, with the car ahead remaining a fixed distance ahead until the car behind has passed you and you've then passed them back. Not sure why the game plays out this way, but it means you if you ignore boosting, you can squeeze all this scripted passes into the opening two laps, leaving you a third and final lap in which to stretch out some big leads.Overall, its a good launch title, with more than enough content to hold you over until that game you've been waiting for finally comes! It's probably one you wont look back on as fondly once your 3DS collection has grown, however.

The amount of times you hear that in each race could potentially do your 'ead in!Unfortunately, it seems you can't change the somewhat annoying commentary off."That's the best you can do?" The lady shouts in the first few seconds of the game..."No.. Give me a freaking chance!"However, the game is good enough to get away with it.I've only played 5 races, but feel this is enough to give a broad review of it.I'm not sure how much there is to keep you busy, but here are my thoughts so far:-The 3D works pretty well.. Though I can't handle it with 3D on full, so tune it down to about half.-The graphics are pretty good, even without 3d enabled.-The gameplay is fun, fun, fun. It's not a five-star game by any means, but with the limited availablity for 3DS games at present, this is one I'd reccomend getting. A good show of how racing games will be on this console. Can't wait for something even better, e.g. Mario Kart!

this is the game i have been waiting for. the whole thing is just an amazing idea. well done namco. The 3D works so well. the game is so fast. The whole thought of ridge racer in 3D is just wow, now i am bit dissapointed that namco havent brought any other best selling games they have made. IE Soul Edge, Alpine Racer and so on.I know Tekken is on its way buy like a way off. anyway this is a good game and shows whats the console is capable of. I just hope games like this will continue to come out. I do like the whole package, it works extremely well in 3D. and in 2D its still a great game.I think all companies need to concentrate on the online aspect of games. for example something like Xbox live would be awesome on 3DS.the console is more than capable. Not much else to say. Its a very good conversion, and is good buy. Worthy to anyones collection.Well done Namco.

First impressions of this game must be "WOW". The design, the graphics, the smoothness of driving. It's all a huge assault on the senses.Which meant after a while I had to turn the 3D down. Even so, the graphics are outstanding. I know Ridge Racer is a bit of a joke (it's always available on launch day, no matter the console!) but this is definitely the best release. The same tracks do crop up a lot, especially in the first races, which gives you the advantage of learning the tracks, but as soon as you start progressing, there's new tracks, or the same tracks in reverse, or flipped into a mirror image, making it always a treat to play.Recommended for when you want to kill some time on the tube or train!(if you've got a seat that is). Kills your vision after an hour or so gameplay though, so put down the 3DS and come back to it later.

Driving games fall into two distinct genres, arcade and simulation. This is most definitely arcade with a capital A. Personally I am not keen on simulators like Gran Turismo, Forza etc with their "realistic" physics and mind numbing attention to detail (yawn). For me a video game must be fun and this most certainly is. Hold down the accelerator button and go for it. The power sliding in this game is sublime, lay off the power and drift round hairpin bends at breakneck speed, did I say this game was Fun. My advice is turn off the annoying commentary, driver icons etc, leave the auto transmission on, put the camera into 1st person view and enjoy this game for what it is, FUN (that's the 3rd time I've used that word). The only downside is it can make your eyes go a bit squiffy.

This game is impressive for a number of reasons. The handling of the cars and use of nitrous is near enough perfect. Taking the car around the 3D tracks you forget your playing a handheld console, its that good. The tracks and 3D environments look stunning and I was impressed with the presentation of the game. There is a wide range of cars which get unlocked and some have to be purchased. When you get the drifting right you end up taking corners very crisply and overtaking even on bends which is awesome. A feature I enjoyed was customising the cars and buying more nitrous which in later races comes in handy.I would say this game is a must purchase not only for Ridge racer fans but for anyonewho enjoys racing games.

I've so far got three 3DS games (including Pilot Wings and Lego StarWars) and this is definitely the best of the bunch. The 3D graphics are stunning, with the road sweeping into the distance. I'm not great at driving games but I found the difficulty curve to be just about right. I particularly liked the feature where you could say how long you wanted to play for, choose your course type, and the game would generate a tournament for you based on your requirements. My only grip is that you have to keep the console quite still otherwise the 3D effect disappears - not easy when you're trying to drift around corners. But this is really something that you just have to get used to,as it's a new way of playing.

The first thing that really impressed me with Ridge Racer 3d is the graphics especially in 3D. This game is really fast and the drifting around the corners is a bit insane at times as I can't stop my car from drifting one direction to the other direction. The race tracks are very good and I can't stop asking myself why has the Wii been left out when it comes to racing games like this. Local Play is excellent fun from 2 - 4 player versus mode but each player requires their own copy of the game. After Mario Kart 7 this is the next best racing game on the 3DS at the moment and should not be missed if you like your racing games.

Ridge racer has always been a solid game right from when it first appeared on the playstation one. This version feels very similar and still has the same quality game play and fun factor. I would have given it 5 stars but I feel its just not quite as good as it should have been and I think the graphics whilst racing could be just a little bit smoother and I found it impossible to get the 3D slider above halfway without it straining my eyes so just make sure you set up the 3D so its comfortable when playing this.Very good launch game and a solid choice for one of your first games.Olly aka Bamakin (gamer tag)

The Ridge Racer for 3DS is a pretty OK launch title, and definitely one of the best so far. It demonstrates the 3D display quite well, and the graphics are quite good. That said, the physics in the game is pretty much on par with Mario Kart, but not nearly as much fun. The not so intelligent female voice commenting the race and driving quickly gets quite annoying.Nice scenery, awesome music, but lack of physics, annoying talk-over and some slow menu selections will only make this game last until the better titles arrives.
