*This is a review of the SmartCut EasyBlade Plus. There's also a SmartCut EasyBlade, if you were wondering.First, and most important: does it trim? Square? And accurately? Well, yes - it *does* trim. And square. You have to push down on the cutter unit, and not gently, to achieve a cut. But it works. As for accuracy, I'll let you know if I ever come across anything that requires precision. What I will say, though, is that Rexel justifies the hefty standard price by adding a number of features you don't need. There's a *lever* to lock the paper into place, for example. That may make sense to someone, but it's an extra something to faff around with ... and another bit that can go wrong. There's also a replaceable 'cutting mat', which is the thin strip on the outside edge. I never had anything like that before, even on an expensive Dahle I used to own. Still, there y'go: a thin plastic strip, and it's replaceable. Go figure: I have no idea why - it is so loose you can move it with a fingertip. The replaceable cutter unit, though: that makes sense.I bought mine for just over thirty quid via Amazon Warehouse - a big saving on the standard price of over eighty. They say it will handle 15 sheets, but they never tell you 'of what'... so it's probably 15 sheets of 70gsm, which nobody ever needs to trim. If you want to trim 15 sheets of 300gsm card, forget it. This will handle card of around 160gsm, but I have so far tried that one sheet at a time. I reckon this would do two sheets of that, and perhaps three ... but if you stress these trimmers you're shortening their operating lives. If you have a *serious* need to cut thicker stuff, and in volume, saving money on the hardware is a false economy. You should buy a high-end trimmer for a three-figure payout.Meanwhile, back on Planet Earth ... this is a well-built machine for the Warehouse price. For full list I'd be disappointed: it's largely plastic, and you get the feeling that the replaceable bits may well *have* to be replaced because they are flaky. At thirty quid this is excellent value fordomestic/hobby needs.
