I purchased the "Flower" from Amazon about three years ago with a view to my retirement. I would describe my skill as "passable Airfix Lancaster " grade, but lost my nerve when opening the box and consigned it to the loft, consoling myself that I could always get some money back one day selling it on e-bay.Time went by, I purchased from Amazon the Airfix "Queen Elizabeth", but half way through lost interest and donated her to my dustman. To enhance the model to look anything like my fond memories of the "Q.E.", was beyond my skill. In desperation I redeemed the "Flower" and boy am I glad I did. I have savoured five months of the most enjoyable model making. The kit fitted together well and the instructions were lucid.Accurately assembling the depth charge rail aft did never the less provoke some bad language. It has to be very precise to accommodate the charges and without the help of slots or an expanded diagram I found it hard to dry assemble. To me she is a triumph, my triumph, but looking at others displaying their "Flowers" on you tube I realise that I am at the bottom of the learning curve. I have since bought another "Flower" from Amazon which I shall start next year. It will be better (hopefully) and I will start to dabble into the black art of p.e. although I am dubious on fitting the wooden deck. Although not authentic I though might look good to a non purist like myself. I tried a section of discarded decking upon a spare piece of plastic and it immediately stuck like a limpet. With sausage like fingers, I am afraid that if I do not align the decking precisely first time, the deck will be ruined. In the mean time I have launched myself into the Academy 1/400 "Titanic", via Amazon, which is another treat.Diversifying; now retired I have adopted model ship making as my main pastime. I am dismayed at the obscene number of model warships on the market, yet except for a handful of classics, merchant shipping has been ignored. Being fortunate to grow up in Southampton in the fifties there were a plethora of beautiful and colourful ships in the port. The Union Castle fleet looked gorgeous with their lavender hulls, the "Green Godess", the Cunarder "Caronia", was painted in many shades of green, the fantastic "United States"... the list goes on. To the model manufacturer I request, before you bring out the 49th version of the "Bismarck", there is a whole ocean of wonderful ships out there, not painted admiralty grey, just waiting to be built.

I originally encountered this model many years ago when it was produced by Matchbox. That version allowed for 3 versions to be produced. I originally built it with remote control, but decided to return it to a static model due to the fine detailing that could easily be damaged. This version is the same kit reduced to 2 versions, but enhanced with laminate wood decking, metal gun barrels and photo etched details. It should be noted that to add the photo etched detailing, the plastic detailing they represent needs to be removed first. This extra detailing adds a significant amount of parts to the original kit thus extending the amount of time required to complete it.The original model produced by Matchbox made a wonderful display, though purists might complain about the lack of detail in certain parts such as the secondary armaments and the over size of others. This version addresses some of these issues, but not all of them. The parts are surprisingly well formed with little in the way of flashing and other flaws given the age of the kit, but there is some warping in one of the hull pieces. The kit is unusual in that the hull is in 4 parts making it slightly more awkward to construct. This is not a toy, but a challenging scale model kit. It is also available in kit form without the extra detailing enhancements and is still a rewarding and challenging model. The parts for the HMS Bluebell variant are still included apart from the required decals, but the instructions provide no guidance to allow its construction.

I didn't buy the kit from Amazon as I bought a 1:72 Revell Corvette "Snowberry" kit from a hobby shop some years ago, before I owned a PC and naturally before I started to purchase from Amazon. I would personally like to give my views on the product as follows, to give the would be modeller some insight. Tools needed are a craft knife and a small tiny flat file to remove any surplus plastic from parts. It took me countless hours over 12 months duration to build it, and to paint the model on levels/stages of assembly. Highly detailed - I had taped the hull to get a good straight paint level of finish...reading the instructions, assembling, painting the small detail and figures. Some rigging is involved. You will need to obtain some filler (an integral part of building any make of plastic Construction kit)to fill in any gaps which can be painted over for maximum atention to assembly detail. You will need to remove any paint you have applied prior to assembly before you glue any two surfaces for max bonding. The kit was not perfect - but pretty close, and this can easily be offcome with perseverance. With care - The outcome will be a superb quality museum appearance model nearly 3 feet long - that of which is in a model showcase that I knocked together. With over 1000 parts right down to the flags - it truly Is a Great model - complete right to the anchor chains. Hope this will help. But believe me - this is not a toy.

I love the ship and have built three of them but I hate the tick on deck its much better to paint the deck and by the way the flower class had steels decks the whaler on which it was based had wooden ones so the preference in colour if up to you. All my ships are real ships but not the ones supplied, a stencil for marking on the numbers is useful in two sizes. Some of the metal parts are not as good as the plastic version as some of the doors are minus their portholes. For the bridge anti-aircraft guns I used the guns from the airfix RAF recue launch and on one model I took off the 2pdr gun and used an airfix 20mmm bofors gun which looks quite good as it has its own crew. All in all an enjoyable model to build if you have the time and patience. Oh yes the metal handrails get bent very easily so do be careful with them or you have to use the posts and thread to get a good finish.

I am 78 years old and I have always held the movie The Cruel Sea as the best war movie I have seen and that I would one day make the model as a challege. It is rated at 5 and being a model railway enthuast I thought I would give it a go. I reckon It should be an 8.Some parts I have improvised and the best tip I can give is to buy the Citadel parts cutter from a War games shop and when snipping the parts off is to have the plastic part sitting on a towel for when the part is cut the part doesn't flow up into the air and lost on the floor.I have a long way to go yet as I am still workimg on the for'rwd section

Another prize! Every time I get a large model it becomes far more difficult than expected. Don't get me wrong -it's a treat to complete the task. I just like to be thorough. I built one before with the help of my dad -he had served on one (should have been called HMCS drunkin' young guys), so he got that one for a birthday. Mine is the platinum version and like any build, it requires lots of prep, adding and substituting details lots of sourcing info and photographs, and some help from a former seaman. Sadly, the ranks are very thin now. Every build is personal. No matter the skill level, this one is great.

I used to look covetously at this kit on the shelves of my local model shop back when it was first released under the Matchbox label. This version updates it with many of the bells and whistles such as etch, that are increasingly expected. But the biggest attraction is it's size. Few people makes kits of ships as opposed to boats in this scale and it's existence is positive enough to give it the thumbs up for it's usefulness beyond the plastic kit world. I've even seen one kit-bashed to make a 1950s vintage railway steamer for service across The Channel or maybe even to Ireland!

Fantastic model. when fully made up, people do stand & stare at it...lots of wonderful details, amazing to work on...1000 parts alone + photo etch parts (Metal detail for the uninitiated). Best model I have worked on to date. Trumpeter have produced a super kit. If you only ever do one last model this has to be it! Also I lost a piece (then found it) but nice people at H.o. said they would replace it!

This is a really crappy kit. If you want a real challenge, to stretch your skills to the utmost - and end up a good finished product - this is definitely the one for you. Expect to pay at least as much again on after-market improvements.

certainly a nice kit without any warping, except for an issue with the wooden planking where the ship didnt have it. Overall all though am pleased with it and the speed of delivery, cant fault it.

A massive model kit which I have yet to start building. Everything appears to be included and an impressive model. I'm tempted not to build the vessel, just to admire the box and contents!

excellent model,im so pleased that with this the platinum edition you get wooden decks and metal guns plus etched metal parts to make your model so much more realistic

Very pleased nice kit good instructions and with the platinum some nice photo etched parts, converted it to RC easily. Added a few lights and looks superb on the water

I enjoyed making this model. the instructions are not that clever. And you will need somemodelling experience to build it. nice when made
