Very impressed with this - it certainly takes a lot of effort out of making up pastes etc. I was a bit wary of other users comments on this site but if you're careful to only use the grinder for 5 second bursts and allow 5 seconds to rest between bursts (as recommended by Revel) then I'm sure the grinder will last the distance. To test, I filled the bowl with cashew nuts and with 5 seconds of grinding they were almost entirely reduced to powder. Although there were still a few chunks left, another quick blitz and they were gone. This would have taken several minutes hard labour even with my massive granite mortar and pestel. The next test was a bit more severe. I had dry fried about 100g of desicated coconut,12 garlic cloves, cinnamon bark, cloves, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, 4 dried thai chilies and a whole chopped onion. All together, this lot practically filled a 12" frying pan.The grinder bowl is on the small side so grinding the above mixture had to be done in many batches. It took 3-4 5 second bursts to grind each batch down to a fairly fine paste. Between bursts, I found that lifting the bowl and hood off the unit and giving it a good shake was required as the mixture of dry and wet ingredients stuck to the sides of the bowl. Maybe grinding wet and dry ingredients seperately would be better. I did consider adding a bit of water to each batch, but didn't want to make my paste too wet.The end result was quite a fine paste which when used in a curry was still a little bit "bitty" but on the whole a lot smoother than previous attempts. If I was designing version 2 of this product, I'd make the bowl a good inch wider and higher to accomodate more ingredients in one go.

I've had mine two weeks and it's now an essential gadget in the kitchen. (I actually bought mine at a John Lewis store).I use it for grinding seeds (sunflower, pumkin, sessame, even poppy seeds which are very difficult to grind) and fresh herbs as well as nuts. I haven't tried it for coffee beans which is one of the things it's meant for.The motor is amazingly powerful for such a small grinder and because it's so powerful it can only be operated in small 5 second bursts otherwise the motor burns out (maybe this is what happened to the first reviewer?).Also, again because it's so powerful (280 watts: the same as most big blenders)it's quite noisy so you can't really operate it in the early hoursof the morning.BUT in 5 seconds it literally turns most seeds and nuts into fine powder- awesome! With the poppy seeds you just do it 2/3 times. You can make peanut butter because of it's excellently deigned water-tight plastic bowl where the action happens. All in all one of the best designed and most useful piece of kit I've ever bought.Like the previous reviewer, I also touched the plug pings with wet hands as I pulled it out of the wall after having just used it and yes there was a very little shock. This is because, like a lot of kitchen appliances, it has a capacitor that still retains a charge after just being unpluged. Moral of the story; don't immediately unplug it with wet hands and touch the pins :)I don't think there's anything else like it on the marketWell done Revel, It's nice to come across a great design for a change!P.S. the chrome is actually plastic chrome but you wouldn't know it unless you touched it.

Forget those ready-made spice mixes, curry sauces or Italian pestos. With this neat little grinder you can make your own in minutes. Nothing compares with the aroma and flavour of freshly ground herbs and spices and the taste - well it is on a different level. If you are a coffee hound, then buy your roasted beans, keep them in the freezer, then use the Revel to grind up just enough for a really fresh-ground cup of expresso. The Revel can handle either dry spices or wet items such as fresh ginger, garlic or onions with ease. It doesn't have a large capacity, but that is not a problem. It is so fast that you can reduce a large onion to fine pulp in very short order. It is best operated in short bursts - in fact the instructions recommend no more than five seconds at a time.It is simple to use and easy to clean. It takes up very little space, and it looks smart with its chrome finish. This is a must-have kitchen tool for anyone who is serious about home cooking. It does the jobs that a larger blender can't tackle and its sheer convenience will ensure that it won't gather dust in the back of the cupboard. This is one bit of kitchen kit that you won't see at a car boot, so get yourself a shiny new one from Amazon.

It took me a while before I decided to buy this one as my last one (Revel CCM102) lasted me over three years and was gutted when it stopped working the other week.So I was very dubious on buying this one and as there are not many around to buy, it seemed this one had the best reviews, although there were a lot of negative ones too. However, I am very happy with this - so far.Initially, the lid seemed difficult to take off and put back on but it took a few practices to understand the workings and to be honest, it's very very easy once you know how to do it. Patience is a virtue :) Press the sides and at the same time, twist and pull the lid off. You'll get the hang of it.You can also add liquids such as milk - I use almond/soya milk with (white) sesame seeds (soaked overnight in water) to make a healthy drink. I grind some cinnamon sticks and add some of that too with some turmeric. It's delicious. I also grind my flax seeds as well as make garlic/ginger paste for curries.Overall, it's worth every penny. I haven't had it that long and hopefully, I won't need to come back here to edit my review :)

I bought this item looking for something simple to make spice mixes. Within the first hour of use you realize that this grinder performs far better than anything listed either on the website or in the accompanying guide book. If it fits in the cup, it will turn into a fine powder or paste within seconds. Fresh garlic, ginger, coriander and cumin seeds for example are handled so quickly and cleanly that it's a joy to use.If you're making curry pastes be careful how much water you add. If you add too much the grinder will start to leak, and while this really won't damage the grinder it may be a little messy. Add water in small amounts and you'll never have to worry about it.The versatility of this device is still something I haven't found the limits of.Recently I needed to juice some grapes, threw them into the grinder for a few seconds and was left with the juice separated perfectly from the pulp.I've had it for about two months, used it almost every day and it's already paid for itself.

I cook a lot, and I do mean a lot, of Indian food. This is my second grinder after 5 or 6 years and I've only bought a replacement because I left the lid to close to the gas hob, causing it to melt; my husband cut off the warped bit so I can still use the old one.The grinder is perfect for grinder whole spices into fine powder; freshly ground spices are just heavenly. I also love it for making ginger and garlic pastes, used a lot in Indian cookery, and so much quicker and easier than grating them with a microplane. I have always used this grinder in short bursts and have experienced no problems with it. In fact, I wouldn't be without it in the kitchen and wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to others. With a little care in making sure you grind in short bursts, this grinder will last several years. Despite the accident with the lid, I am still using my old one and, now I have two machines, I can have one for dry and one for wet grinding at the same time !

An invaluable kitchen aid for my Mother in law (in her 80ies) who uses this every day to separately puree small amounts of each component of the evening meal for a family member who has difficulty eating and swallowing. The person receives a meal in which each of the components are presented separately (in puree) so that the different flavours can still be appreciated and enjoyed. This grinder is quick and easy to use (and rinsed in a jiffy in between each item). Before investing in this myself I tried using a stick blender and small jug but it was cumbersome and not ideal due to small quantities involved. For pureeing single portions of cooked meat or veg this grinder is far superior.NB A plate guard is also used to further help the family member.PS Personally I think my Mother in law also deserves 5 stars for taking the trouble to find this Grinder and not simply using an existing tool to liquidise everything together.

When I read the reviews for this product I was truly amazed...I've not had a single problem with it (apart from cut fingers when not being careful - the blades are still dangerously sharp). I only every use it in 5 second bursts and even then only towards the end of the grinding when the spices are mostly reduced. I also let it cool down in-between from 30 sec to 5 min (depending on the burst-time).I've never put so much liquid in that it runs down the side - the bowl is really too small for that in any case. Mostly I grind dry spices (but never whole nutmeg or large pieces of dried ginger (its a mechanical grinder...not Jesus)); cinnamon isn't a problem but I break down cassia with my fingers first. For wet blends, I first grind the spices in the revel and then transfer them with onions, garlic and water into a Braun stick blender. My only complaint after almost 5 years is that the cable is too short.

I have had this grinder for 10 months now, and as a keen curry cook I have used it regularly. I agree with other reviewers that it could be a bit bigger - when grinding wet ingredients, such as garlic and ginger to make a paste, there tends to be some leakage which runs down the sides of the bowl. This is worrying as I am sure it could get onto the contacts where the bowl fits onto the base.I have been really careful to only use it in 5 second bursts, as instructed, and up to now it has been excellent. I like that you can put the bowl and to into the dishwasher, though often all it needs is a rinse under the tap.Having read that other people have found that this product only lasts a year - I will be on my guard.Fingers crossed that it does better than that as I would really miss this indespensable little gadget.Andrea

Amazon tells me I bought this in 2010, seven years ago. With a couple of minor caveats, this is a great little gizmo and I used it (mainly for spices) a huge amount.Firstly though, take the manual seriously when it says *short bursts*. It's a powerful motor in a small case and it's designed for pulsing, not holding down permanently. I run mine for five to ten seconds, then stop, then repeat until I'm happy with the mix. I've just tested and two seven second bursts was fine to powder some cumin seeds to my satisfaction.Secondly, I'm still on the same motor but managed to wear out the blades on a cup. You can get spare cups though they're a bit pricey for what they are.All that said,it's the best spice grinder I've used and I'd replace it without a second thought if it broke.

This is a useful piece of kitchen equipment if, and only if, you treat it gently. It can be used for herbs as well as spices, and the powerful motor makes short work of nuts and seeds. However, don't let that fool you into thinking it's indestructible. The top of the grinder warns you to use it for no longer than 5 second bursts, but what it doesn't tell you is that if you fill it to the top with hard material there's likely to be irreparable damage and a strong smell of burnt plastic. Large chunks of hard material in particular are more than it can cope with - I've now wrecked 3 grinders trying to grind chunks of stale bread into crumbs. Take it easy, and it can cope, but when you're hungry that's not so easy!

I purchased this grinder after broke my Phillips Cucina grinda which was excellent. I used it almost 10 years for everyday cooking purposes. Before I purchased Revel, I tried many more grinders including Kenwood chef, Phillips etc. But none of them worked for wet and dry grind. Kenwood chef broke after couple of months, leaking water inside and costing me a lot to get repaired.Revel grinder is good but it is very very small.AS I make lots of curries and chutneys I use the grinder every so often. Because of the size of this grinder it is getting bit difficult for me.But as I was unable to find a wet and dry grinder from the market I am happy with my purchase. With lots of patient it does the job well.

I purchased this grinder 3 months ago and thought I should write a review now after some extended use.I have been looking specifically for a wet and dry grinder for some time and was a bit nervous of this product because of some of the reviews. I've been using it now for 3 months for grinding all sorts of different curry pastes and rubs with brilliant results. The motor is incredibly powerful so you only need to pulse it for a second or two. As well as curry pastes it also blends all types of nuts and spices perfectly. After 3 months use I have seen no sign of wear on the main socket mechanism and would definitely have no problem recommending this product and seller

This grinder is excellent - better now they have updated it with metal workings as opposed to plastic. Just make sure to follow the rules & only use for 5 seconds at a time then let it rest, & it works a treat. The only thing it doesn't do well is Parmesan Cheese. I use it for Fresh Red Chilli's, Fresh Garlic, Fresh Ginger, etc, I cut them up a bit 1st, it chops these lovely & fine like minced. I then freeze them in ice cubes so I can pop one out when required. Not as good as totally fresh but much better than the dried or paste version. Learnt this trick years ago, from a programme called Love Food, Hate Waste. Also the grinder is very easy to clean.

I have had my revel grinder for about four years now and it has been a brilliant addition to my kitchen. I do a lot of cooking and use this to make my own pastes and spice mixes. It does this brilliantly - I start my thai curry paste off in a bigger processor and then finish it off in this. More washing up but works well and if you make lots and freeze it it's not the end of the world. Also good for chopping herbs, grinding nuts and I like the fact that you can put it in the dishwasher. Word of warning; I dropped the top and the lid broke off so not particularly strong but it doesn't really matter. If you are a cook, this is fab.
