Red Baron is WWI flight simulation that allows players to guide a pilot throught their career for either the German or Allied forces, earning victories and trying to stay alive along the way.Graphics: 6/10 - The graphics are obviously very dated, but are not really flawed in any way except for the fact that the game was released 16 years ago. Enemy planes look like blobs in the distance and the 3D models of everything on the ground is very primitive and basic. The models for the planes look good (up close anyway), and there is plenty of detail etched into the game. Fly under a cloud and everything gets just a shade darker. If a plane gets shot up enough it will start billowing smoke and if you get hit sometimes you'll see bullet holes pepper your plane.Sound: 4/10 - Definitely the biggest weakness in the game. The sound effects are very limited, and for the most part just consist of the monotonous hum of your engine. However, I will say that the sound effects are sufficient in that I dislike playing the game without them.Playability: 9/10 - This game is easy to pick up and a lot of fun to play. It features a more relaxed kind of flight simulation that compromises a degree of realism to make it more fun. This makes it a great choice for more casual gamers. The player can still choose more realistic flight models along with an array of realism features such as gun jams, collisions, sun blindness, etc.Fun: 9.5/10 - This game is simply put, a lot of fun. Few things in gaming stand up to the exhiliration of taking on six enemies by yourself, desperately trying to take out that last German before your pilot bleeds to death, dodging flak while shooting down enemy observation ballons, or taking an enemy challenge request just to find he shows up with a couple of friends.Overall: 8.5/10 - Twelve years ago I would have rated this game a 10 without question. It has certainly aged some, and it shows it in graphics, sound, and engine capacity (don't expect any missions with more than eight enemies). Great gameplay is something that has always aged well, though, and Red Baron has enough of it to make it a ton of fun to play to this day. I consider it to still be the best WWI flight simulation, and a great buy at the very reasonable prices.
