This is a recent release from QNAP, hence no reviews on amazon.co.uk as yet, so thought I'd put a few lines up to give potential purchasers a steer.I was looking for a NAS that would offer some flexibility for the future, in terms of processor power and RAM expansion; the AMD processor seems to have plenty of grunt, and the RAM can be expanded all the way up to 64Gb. I ordered mine with 4Gb, and am using it mainly as a media server, running Asset to serve hi res music files, and stream video files. I also use it to store Lightroom catalogues and Final Cut libraries. The QNAP QTS operating system comes with lots of useful cloud based apps - to allow streaming of media and NAS management, and even the uploading of media in real time to the NAS via Wifi/4G. These are stable and reasonably slick.Performance is good, even with the minimal complement of 4Gb RAM. It doesn't have graphics functionality, so relies on the processor for transcoding, but this is up to the task - however, it has 2 x PCIe slots should you want to add a graphics card (so long as this is able to run with motherboard power). Equally, you could add 10Gbe ethernet and/or PCIe SSDs for fast caching or storage. I have used a regular 1Tb SSD in one of he drive bays for cacheing purposes to speed up read access, and to minimise stutter when streaming video. It is quiet, should you be considering using it as a media server in a domestic environment - I have rarely heard the cooling fan kick in, though I haven't yet populated all the drive bays. All in all, I rate this highly. Downsides are minimal - the constantly flashing LAN status LED on the front panel is a bit of a distraction, though thankfully relatively dim. The QTS management software is intuitive enough once you've learnt what's where, and it is certainly flexible. I'll pop a review update up in a few months once I've had more extensive experience with it.

I was initially looking for just a box of disks, to be an iSCSI target for my homelab servers and to use for 1 or 2 fileshares!I was originally looking at the their cheaper 9-bay ARM based NAS, but then decided on this one as I wanted something that was X64 based, in addition the other one only had 5x 3.5" bays and 4x 2.5" bay... and I'm really glad I did! This one is WWWAAAYYY more expandable. So first off, yes it only has 8 actual bays, but the thing that is not clear in the literature, is the motherboard also has space for 2x M.2 SATA SSDs, in addition, you can buy an expansion card to add another 2 or 4 of these drives (Note QNAP offer their own, but get a cheaper third party one).It also has 2 full PCIe ports,so you can almost anything you like, such as more 10G NIC, GFX Card, USB-C etc.In addition, you can fit 64Gb RAM into this, which for a home NAS is game changer, as suddenly its no longer just a NAS, but a VM and Docker host if you want it to be - So with this single box, I can replace 2 of my home-lab servers (Though I still have another 3).With regards to RAM, save yourself money, do NOT buy the QNAP RAM, or these offered by "Memory Configurator tools" (such as Mr Memory or Crucial etc).. Buying from them, you will pay £600+ for 64GB. Use them to identify the RAM, then shop around. Personally I brought 64GB of the following RAM from Amazon, and it cost me just over £300https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07CMJZQRZ/My 1 single disappointment about this box so far (and QNAP in general), is they don't support multiple VLANs on each interface.UPDATE: In Sept QNAP released QTS 4.4.1, which has introduced multi-VLAN support on each NIC...

I bought this primarily to use as a media server. The setup was very easy and problem free. In less than 2 hours I had access to over 53 TB of storage from 8 X 10TB WD RED Drives formatted and configured in RAID 6. The unit then took a further 21 hours to sync the RAID in the background. I began transferring my 4K movie collection and could still achieve an average transfer rate of 110 MB/s through my standard 10/100 home network. So that's a full 60GB 4K movie in around 9 minutes (Whilst in RAID sync priority mode).I have set up the QNAP iCloud connection and can access the NAS from my android phone and tablet.Streaming of lower rate video is quite good but will obviously be entirely dependent on the internet quality at a particular location.I am very impressed with how quiet it is, whilst performing file transfers and streaming the fans are still almost at idle and so the unit is barely audible. My older Thecus NAS units are quite noisy and were relegated to the spare room, but I could quite happily have this QNAP NAS in my lounge and would not notice it. All in all for my use this model is a bit of overkill in terms of speed and performance, but I wanted some in built future-proofing, the cheaper 832x would have been more than adequate for my current needs.

This is my 3rd QNAP NAS and by far the most functional, having 2HDs and 2SSDs installed running PLEX for movies at 4k and Roon both of which are resourse intensive but handled easily.I bought a Nvidia GT1030 for it HDMI output and to harness its GPU power to accelerate the QNAP further. For ease of use, software support in the QNAP store and future proofing its hard to argue with the value this represents.
