PURINA "PRO PLAN" Dog Food for Large Adult Athletic with Optiderma for Sensitive SkinPurina, part of the Nestle Group is a high profile producer of pet foods and within it's stable are such well known products as Winalot, Bonio, Beta, Bakers and of course Pro Plan. They claim to be one of the leaders in pet care and pet nutrition and now demonstrate this by adding a number of variants aimed at specific sized dogs and those with particular issues like sensitive digestion and. those needing care with their joints like the older dogs. This variant is for active breeds with sensitive skins to help reduce itching and scratching. Is this true or just good marketing ? Well it's probably a bit of both.it is certainly true that they occupy one of the top places in pet food production and as everyone knows, you don't get there if your products are not good. Pet owners will buy once then move on if they and their pets don't like the food. Some of their products like Winalot and Bonio have been market leaders for decades and not by accident. Dried dog foods have now become very popular due to their convenience, balanced nutrition and value. Many of the top line producers have developed products to target specific groups and Pro Plan and Beta are Purina's contribution. Our young hound was brought up on Beta Puppy, started by his breeder and continued by us. We have tried several other top brands that he has won at shows - some go down well, others not so well so I was pleased to see he really like this Pro Plan variant. The main target group for this "Pro Plan with OptiDerma and salmon" is for active dogs with sensitive skins. Short haired dogs that have little or no protection and predominantly white haired dogs are prone to developing skim and coat issues. To help dogs in this category, Purina have put together a mix including salmon, rice, salmon protein, fish oils eggs and other dish derivatives. Oil and fish based ingredients are generally accepted as help to improve coat condition so it is a welcome addition to help address these issues. You can of course add fish oil to your existing dog food but that rather misses the point of having a balanced mixture with the right minerals.Well, does it work you ask ? I would not claim that three weeks of Purina Pro Plan has improved the shine in our dogs coat for that is something that would be very hard to improve but there has been a distinct reduction in the amount of scratching he performs each morning. Like many such products / remedies it will take time to show results and really this is meant to be used on an ongoing basis not just a 14 kilo bag as a one off. However if you have a dog that falls into this category, Pro Plan with salmon and OptiDerma is worth serious consideration. It comes in a rather large, strong re-sealable sack and if storage space is an issue you can keep (say) a coupe of days usage in the house with the sack in the garage. There is a smell which is not unpleasant (no worse than a pet shop) but the re-sealable bag will contain that if it proves not to be to your liking and also keeps the dogs away because it is a smell that they definately like. The kibble is a reasonable size but you can buy this for smaller dogs if it is too big. You can feel the oils when your put your hand in the bag and there is nothing included that will do anything but good. The fish / oil mixture will also act as an aid to digestion. Our dog has really taken to it and there is nothing left in his bowl which is not in character as being a hunting dog, he tends not to eat every day. If you decide to give this a try, remember to mix it with your existing food for a few days before the change over.Purina , like their competitors have something to meet the needs of many specific groups, for dogs young and old, big and small and with sensitive digestion so there will be something for you. It's a good product and worthy of your attention. It is not the cheapest on the market but you know "good" is not cheap. If my dog is happy, I am happy.........and my dog is happy !

OK, Bella the Fox Terrier isn't the largest dog, but she's a very active one and burns a lot of energy, and she's always hungry. She tends to eat smaller amounts of good quality food, as this suits her...emissions and clean-up tends to be a doddle, and at roughly anticipate-able times.I was a little wary of starting her on something new, so introduced these mixed in with her regular food, and made sure that she had plenty of water, and not too large a quantity. So far, over 48hrs, there's been no tummy upset, no difficulty getting her small but long snout around these, and her emissions haven't changed noticeably. I'm going to increase the amount she gets slowly til she's solely on this food, and will report back.As to the nutritional content? Clearly, all/most allergens have been removed from this food, but the protein content isn't quite as high as I'd like, unlike the I**s brand that Miss B is currently on. Both are fairly similar in price, but the other bags are easier to store due to the largest being about 3kg in weight. Luckily with this, the bag is sturdy and it's not hard to seal it back; I've not noticed any smells escaping, or the dog or any of our three fish-loving felines after this, so yay!Miss B is a shared dog, as we work during the week, so it'll be interesting to hear from her other family, after our annual leave, to see how they think she's doing on this food - to be updated, but for the time being, we're impressed.

Our loveable rogue has been quite taken with Purina dog food and this particular product for large athletic dogs is ideal. A cross greyhound, our lurcher comfortably ensconced on the sofa seems the picture of laziness. Take him on his long walks through the woods and fields and he just bursts with nonstop speed. He is generally not one to turn up his nose at any food put in front of him but he does have his moments, so to keep him interested we supplement his dry food with a little meat or his favourite, fish. Before I had even taken the packaging off he was sniffing at the bag. The first feed was gone in a few minutes. The salmon flavour appears to have hit the spot. Take up a handful and have a sniff,it smells strong. Then try to wash the smell off your hands. While we have never had problems of skin disorders with any of the mutts, and cross breeds we have had over the years I do know of dogs that this product might be beneficial for. While our lurcher is short haired and he picks up numerous scratches from brambles he dives headlong into it can only be good that there is fish oil in the product. The dog appears to like the taste, the size of the kibble and the smell. We will of course still supplement the dry food a few times a week. If only Purina could invent something the would also reduce the moulting hairs!

Firstly this bag is massive, and very heavy and bulky. If you have a small house or flat and space is limited I'd avoid it. If not an issue, you can be reassured it's a strong reinforced sack that doesn't tear easily. So what's it like? The kibbles are quite large and chunky, about the size of standard gravel. They have a distinct quite unpleasant odour but then this is dog food so it's to be expected and if it didn't smell of fish I'd be concerned! Purina claims this is full of vitamins and minerals and as its fish based will aid sensitive skin. My dog is having issues with the heat and coupled with flea season this means his skin and coat gets quite dry and itchy. Did this help as claimed?Yes, kind of. It's not going to work miracles but after a few days of feeding him this I did notice a reduction in itching. He is also a bit more energetic and I believe this is down to the extra nutrients. I have found Purina food to be very good quality based on past products and this is no exception, and he seems to like the product. The only downside is the price. It's very expensive and I'm just not totally convinced it's worth the extra. Yes you get absolutely loads of dog food and if you have several dogs it may be worth it, but personally I'd stick to the smaller cheaper bags offered by Purina

What’s good:Good-sized bag of foodGood consistency of contentsPopular with the houndsWhat’s not so good:Quite priceyA bit smelly (as expected)We used this food with two large and getting-on-a-bit white setters. They have never been fussy with food - eating whatever gets within reach whether intended for them or not. They also have traditionally suffered a bit with their skin, always getting sores and constantly trying to tend to themselves. We live in a rural area so there are lots of fields that they probably are a bit sensitive to. As such, this ‘Sensitive Skin with OPTIDERMA’ piqued our interest. We have been using it for the past couple of days, mixed in with their usual mix of foods as we don’t like to go whole-hog on a singular foodstuff as we don’t want them to become fussy. Both dogs were particularly intrigued by this food, probably because it has salmon in it and we don’t tend to buy much fish-based food for them - but so far so good as they are keen on this new mix we are giving them, and their digestive systems are as-yet unaffected.Obviously almost £50 for a sack of food is always going to be a tough pill to swallow, but it goes with the territory and we both agree this food has made a good addition to the mix which we will consider again.

Both my large, active adult German Shepherd Dogs have sensitive stomachs and sensitive skin. Both are also very fickle when it comes to their food. So this Purina Pro Plan complete dog food produced for large adult, athletic dogs with sensitive skin, is clearly a real no-brainer for me.Although relatively expensive, both my dogs have thrived on it and cannot wait for their meals, clearing their bowls on every occasion. Their coats shine and their skins have been problem free during the use of this product. No digestion issues have been noticed and their stools are normal in colour and consistency. This Purina salmon dry dog food is virtually indistinguishable from other types of Purina dry dog foods that we have tried in the past,in that it comes in uneven sized large chunks, with little if any residue or mess, either in or out of the ideal large resealable bag. Some reviewers describe this Purina food as odour free but I can detect the slight smell of salmon upon which it is based. That said it is hardly discernible and it doesn't affect the dogs in any way. There is nothing negative I can say about this product which I have no hesitation in highly recommending.

Very tasty... according to our very (some might say hyper) active Australian Shepherd anyway. He leaves nothing in his bowl. And so far (after 5 days) he has shown no adverse effects such as stomach upset or loose stools. The kibble itself is of reasonable size, giving him something to crunch on. The ingredients boast real salmon and other fish oils which, with their natural omega 3, etc I have always liked to give my dogs in one form or another, to keep their joints in good health. Though at circa 15% dehydrated salmon its not the highest level of real oily fish content kibble on the market. Not that that is necessarily the most important consideration for everyone. There's also a fair amount of maize content too, which not all dog lovers will like. Though I tend to believe its a fairly neutral ingredient. The Purina Pro Plan sits within the higher end of the price bracket for dog food. But with its marginally better than average ingredients is probably worth it. I calculated it at around £1 a day to feed my dog (via the 14kg bag) which is quite reasonable in my view. BTW the resealable packaging is a good point in its favour too.

PURINA PRO PLAN Dog Large Adult Athletic with Sensitive Skin with OPTIDERMA rich in Salmon Dry Food 14kgWe have given this to our Poodle Collie cross who does get very itchy in the summer.Ingredients.There is plenty of good ingredients and omega complexes in here that should help with skin problems. The normal fillers that seem to cause the itching are absent in this food as far as I can see from the ingredients list.Feeding.Our Poodle cross enjoys the food so there has been no problem with him eating it. It does smell a bit fishy but that is to be expected. I think the strong smell is why he likes it so much.Results.The bag lasted around 3 weeks and there was definitely a noticeable reducing in itching and scratching. So on our dog it does what it is supposed to do.Overall.#It agrees with our dog and we have seen a noticeable reduction in itching without the use of vet prescribed creams and shampoos that we normally need In the summer. It is expensive but compared to the vets visits and all the associated costs it is much cheaper overall. We will stick with this for the summer at least. A good balanced dog food.

Superb product. Quality dog food.Very good value with my subscribe & save discount. Always buy salmon at different stages with pro plan. The other stages... puppy & senior are a smaller kibble that is also the perfect size to use as training treats. The salmon for general adult dogs was out of stock, so had to order this large active bag so that we could keep the salmon/ rice variety.I will return to the smaller kibble in future.... as I am having to share my other sack with my son for training treats.Medium kibble, not small. This is unclear in the description & the packaging no longer has a picture for reference.Only negative is the packaging. I send the empty plastic sac back to Pro plan. The sac has ripped in the past, been delivered damaged, or delayed my delivery due to courier return. It would be far better to pack in a paper bag/ sac & then transport in a card box. Less waste for manufacturer, easier to transport & fully recyclable. Hope they go back to this method.

Our lab staffy cross has had dandruff on and off for years. We used to think it was predominantly caused by stress but we'd also notice it would flair after changes of dry dog food. He's now getting into his senior years and his joints are playing him up too. As Omega 3 and fish oils are a long renowned treatment this seems an ideal product for him.Ok its early days so far in him eating this but the signs are good on many fronts. First things first the change over hasn't had a noticable affect on his digestion which is always a worry when changing their diets.Secondly the bit of dandruff he had prior to starting on this food now appears to have goneThirdly he seems already to be a little lessstiff when getting up after one of his long evening snoozes.None of this is scientific proven obviously but we have a happy satisfied pooch who we think we can see improvements in already so whats not to like? oh well maybe except the price of this food .... ouch!!!

This is a large 14kg bag of Purina Pro Plan Dog food for a large breed 25 kg plus. The food is designed for sensitive dogs prone to scratching or itchy skin. The product does not contain gluten.Ingredients;Salmon (15%), Maize, Rice (14%), Dehydrated salmon protein, Maize gluten meal, Animal fat, Maize grits, Soya meal, Digest, Dried beet pulp, Dried egg, Minerals, Dried chicory root, Fish oil, Soybean oil. Also available in a chicken variety. The dry biscuit I found a bit sticky so if you use your hands to fill the bowl there is a sticky residue left. There is a slight odour but not strong, acceptable. The bowl can become sticky if not cleaned straight after use.If opened per instructions the bag can be folded over to keep things fresh.I didn't get the hang of this and my bag is ripped. My dog enjoyed this product.

I was initially drawn to a bag of PRO PLAN OPTIDERMA Salmon Sensitive Skin Large Breed Robust Adult Dog Food which my dog enjoyed immensely. The difference between the two seemingly amounting to the words 'athletic' and 'robust'. While I'd like to consider my Golden Retriever athletic, he is now nine and not as active as he used to be. And as far I can tell, this athletic one carries more calories (added fat and protein). As for the taste, he wolfed down both. Impressive considering the relatively large kibble size. Either way, I couldn't detect a preference. And he's a terrible scratcher too and no raw patches have appeared, so for the second time it's a wholehearted recommendation. However, unless I'm told otherwise, I think the robust variety would be best for him on a regular basis.

My two large (and athletic!) five year old Show Springers munch this up and lick the bowl after. The kibble is chunky, bigger than the bite size nuggets more usually provided, but that just made it all the more fun for them. The aroma is of salmon, fishy, which is fine by us.Sensitive skin can have many causes, flea allergy, other allergy, even genetic predisposition, and so a vet is the best person to diagnose the cause; but one easy one to eliminate is diet, therefore choosing a fish based dry food is a sensible way to go.Shiny coats, bright eyes, an eagerness for exercise, plenty of life, sound sleep when taken, all these factors add up to the ideal for our pets - feeding them top quality Purina food certainly seems to appeal and work well.

Purina Pro Plan, large athletic dog.Well the proof of the pudding is in the tasting but even before I had opened the bag my dog knew something was happening. The back was a revelation, no scissors or ripping needed here, just gently pull apart the seal and the bag is fully open.Inside the biscuits (predictably large) were moist and had my dog drooling before the bowl was full. It wasn't full for long either as he worked his way through them with gusto. He's got a sensitive tummy and we have to be careful what we give him or he gives it back to us during the night.Great news was that I had no surprises waiting for me in the morning. He's happy as usual and full of beans.Stools solid and no terrible wind.Five stars!

I was hoping that this would be the cure for Ruby the Great Dane's constant scratching that has me scratching in sympathy. She doesn't have fleas but she does have short downy hair which is constantly shedding. Unfortunately she wasn't too keen on the stuff and would turn her nose up at it. I suspect that she's too used to dinner leftovers and, as we all know, they can be very tasty indeed. Unfortunately this meant I could not test it properly but had to donate it to the Dogs Trust who were very happy to accept it. On that basis I cannot mark it down because of one spoiled Great Dane. On a practical note the resealable packaging was useful.
