To turn them from arcade ROMs -- designed more or less purely to ensure a steady accumulation of coins -- into games with reasonable enough difficulty levels to actually enjoy playing, "Strikers 1945 I", "Dragon Blaze" & "Strikers I945 II" have had easier difficulty modes programmed into them......whereas the "Strikers 1945 III" in this collection is, at its core, just the arcade ROM with the original arcade difficulty, which in this case is extreme enough to force even the most ardent, dedicated and practised SHMUP otaku with an expert knowledge of the machine in question, into having to shovel a steady stream of yen into its coin slot to keep progressing through the game.I assume the easier difficulty settings were added to "Strikers 1945 II" for its PS1 release, and to "Dragon Blaze" & "Strikers 1945 I" for their PS2 release. To reiterate: the "Strikers 1945 III" in this collection is primarily the unaltered arcade ROM, and is arcade level difficulty, which in this case means the game's game-balance and difficulty is such that it's impossible not to consistently fail at the game at a consistently steady rate.In other words, it's difficult -- punishingly so -- to the point of being unplayable in the sense that you'd reasonably expect to be able to play it, given that it's been released in a package for the home market and given that Psikyo's existing track record for adapting their earlier releases for the home market has been what you'd potentially expect.I can't in good conscience give this item three stars because I'm grateful both to have the collection on the Switch and for them having retained the "tate" mode from the previous releases, I just wish they'd put the work in to adding easier difficulty modes to "Strikers III" (at the very least even just lowering the enemys' hit points)......given licensing and technical limitations "Cannon Spike" is understandably probably too much to ask for, but it would have been really cool to have been able to play "Strikers III" in a form you'd expect to be able to in a home release. Also, it would have been cool to have the cabinet artwork in the borders of the monitor and maybe an extras section in the cartridge menu showing the original cabinets and their poster and trade magazine ads, maybe with some blurb on the history and origins of the cabinets.Other than the printed matter and the CD's you get with the collectors edition of this release, in comparison to other retro arcade compilations, this one's actually relatively bare bones. The menu options, which are relatively extensive, are excellent but I must say I would have liked to have been able to assign functions to the ZR & ZL buttons rather than just to the face buttons and right & left bumpers. To summarise: it's a great collection but I still don't have the "Strikers 1945 III" I've been looking for. Had this cartridge had that, it would have been an excellent collection; had it also had Cannon Spike it would have knocked this collection out of the park.
