I got this because I am learning to play guitar and wanted to have something that would allow me to work my fingers individually as well as easily change grips and positions. The individual finger tension is a great way to work out the 'pinkie' which is typically neglected and a pain for stretching to certain chords. For me, this is a much better option than the usual grip strength springs that are out there. I don't have a problem closing my hand, I need individual finger strength. This exerciser allows both. It also has the benefit of allowing you to easily isolate and work your wrist if you want. On a 2 handle spring exerciser, that would be difficult or impossible. The exerciser comes with some exercise examples and you can get more information and exercise examples from their web site. Gripmaster offers several different levels of tension and these are pretty inexpensive, so you can start with light or extra light and work your way up as needed. Medium tension seems to be pretty standard and what you would want if you are an average adult male. I have tried the other lower tension levels and they are a little too easy. I assume they might be useful if you are going for # of reps vs. building strength. I am not an exercise junkie and have no idea if something like that actually matters for fingers.I have purchased other versions of this with lighter tension for female friends of mine and one person going through some physical rehabilitation. They all say they like the exerciser. The heaviest tension seems to be a bit of overkill and I have a harder time pressing that down completely. I suppose if I ever felt the need for a 'power pinkie' (skadoosh!), I could try to work up to that one. This version seems to be working for me as my finger strength does seem to be getting better and the effort needed for me to hammer notes or chords appears to be less. I notice that I am using this less since I am doing better on the guitar at least with getting my fingers down. Really playing is another story. I suspect that soon this will start to collect dust from disuse. However, it was relatively inexpensive and it has been very useful. If I ever want or need it again, I'll have it.

You need to consider gender, age, present condition of your hands, work history, etc., but the biggest factor is WHY you want stronger hands and therefore HOW you're going to use the Gripmaster. For example, if you want to develop a stronger tennis grip, you're going to be squeezing the Gripmaster with your whole hand, which is relatively easier to do. You might tend toward buying a stronger model to start. But if you want to develop a stronger left hand for playing the double bass (upright bass) using classical or jazz fingering, you're going to be squeezing the Gripmaster with the very tips of your fingers, which is relatively MUCH harder to do. You might tend toward buying a weaker model to start.Eventually you will be pinching it with your finger tips against the very pad of your thumb, instead of the crook of your hand, which is REALLY harder to do.For beginning upright-type bass, I started with the blue (light) version. I could crush it much too easily with my whole hand, but definitely NOT by pinching it with my fingertips against the pad of my thumb. For that exercise, I could have started with the yellow (extra light) version. Huge difference in how you're going to use it.I also bought the Rough Rider callus builders that snap on to the NON-"Pro" versions only. These things are brutal, but they really work. You may want to start working on calluses without the Rough Riders though, if you don't have any calluses at all. The Rough Riders are easily moveable from one version to another, as long as its a NON-"Pro" version.I am seeing a big difference in my finger strength, calluses, and--therefore--how much time I can practice bass at once. Week to week, my strength gains are very noticeable simply because I work with this thing for a minute many times each day. You can use a Gripmaster without even taking it out of your jacket pocket.

This is a review for guitar players specifically.I bought the Red 7-lb Medium tension version. Your pinky will need time to catch up to the rest. Go for this or for less if you're a beginner, but not more. Even if you're advanced, start here, then move upwards. It's not easy when you hold your finger grip for a few seconds. When I first started using this, my hands became much stronger, much more accurate, very quickly. These results, however, faded as fast as they came. It's like after the first week of going to the gym. You feel sore, you feel like you've accomplished something big. Maybe you feel a little more muscle here and there. The illusion then disappears, and improvement is attained only with diligent practice.Coupled with finger independence exercises that are done on alternate days (to avoid overworking the hands, as you'll be practicing guitar as well), these are tremendous tools for accelerated guitar learning. People growing up in previous decades couldn't strengthen their fingers away from the fretboard with this safety and effectiveness. You now have the opportunity to do so.Remember to stretch your hands and fingers everyday; you can find many examples of such stretches on the Internet. Also, buy a bag of peas and throw it in your freezer. If you practice hard on Gripmaster and guitar, your wrists may start to hurt (fingerstyle for right hand). When this happens, take a break, and put a the bag of peas on them. Ice is a miracle worker when used on early soreness. Don't play when you're in pain. There's no rush to improve. Your guitar skills will grow like a seed into a tree. You'll get to where you want to get. Just keep at it, and don't play when you're in pain. Ever (this injunction does not apply to athletes, who may have to play in critical games even if they're carrying injuries).

I bought the GripMaster "Medium Tension" at the recommendation of my co-worker, who shares similar symptoms related to many hours spent at a keyboard (computer, not electric). She had been experiencing pain and numbness in her hands and forearms, and purchased the GripMaster to alleviate those symptoms. I discovered the device at her desk, and purchased mine not only for the medical benefits, but also the manual dexterity that would ultimately result from hours of practice, both individual digits and simultaneous. The GripMaster helps me build strength in my fingers, and I am glad that I selected the Medium Tension version. I do believe that the Strong Tension would be too much, and the Lite Tension, too little. Since I started using the GripMaster, I only get pains in my fingers when I'm typing, but my general arm and hand numbness is nearly gone altogether!I heartily recommend buying this product to cure your carpel tunnel. As an added benefit, I've been told that it is also useful for musicians, too (guitar, trumpet, and electric keyboard). With the holidays coming up, this is a handy (no pun intended!) stocking stuffer idea.NOTE: in all seriousness, this is a great little tool, much better than the thing my dad used to have that was two black handles attached to a giant spring (you know what i'm talking about - you'd squeeze it until the muscle between your thumb and palm started to cramp) - the buttons are separated so that you can exercise individual fingers and your whole hand, as well as turn it around and work on your thumb. for the increasingly large group of people who spend most of their day in front of a computer, this is a nice little tool to stretch out your fingers, relieve stress, and pass the time as you contemplate larger issues.

I bought this in order to improve my finger strengh and independance for playing guitar. I had thought of buying one years ago, but my view was - if you want to improve your finger strength and dexterity for guitar, just play guitar, right? But I changed my mind, and decided to give this little device a go, on the grounds that I can use it when I'm NOT able to play guitar (like when I'm at work) and maybe using a device with some resistance might accelerate my finger strengh gains? This is a pleasingly well made unit, and the plastic parts seem to be of high-quality. I decided to go for the red "medium" excerciser, having read some comments here about more reps and lower tension being more beneficial for musicians. When the unit arrived,I was beginning to think I should have gone for the 5lb device instead! The tension initially felt quite strong, particularly on the little finger!Well does it work? in my opinion definitely yes! Having used this device for only about 15 mins a day most days for 3 weeks, I suddenly find that the spring tension feels a lot lower. Also it has transformed my guitar playing! Playing my 12 string acoustic guitar suddenly seems easier, and on my electric, hammers and pulls seem much more accurate and clearer! my speed has improved, and I recently found myself doing vibrato with my little finger, something I don't normally do!So yes, I think it works for Guitarists (and other musicians) and it's quality means that it is good value for the money!

Thanks to reading the reviews on Amazon, I was able to find out that the Gripmaster Hand Exerciser was supposed to be used as a finger exercise product. Even though I was using this product wrong, it was still able to train my hand strength. This product also comes with many variations of tension strength; anywhere from 3-10. I think if you are an average male, the red Gripmaster would be perfect for you. For females of average height and weight, this would most likely be too difficult; I would suggest using one class lower. The quality of this item is what you would expect to be. The red part with the coil springs are made from a lighter plastic material, while the black area is made with a much harder and denser plastic material. Overall the quality is nice and doesn't feel like it would break after a while of using. Something I like about this product is that it doesn't hurt my hand as much as other hand exercisers would. One thing I would like as an improvement to this item would be for the pinky part of the gripmaster to be lower in tension from the rest of the fingers. I have difficulty pressing down all the way with my pinky; i'm only able press it about half way down. I want to get the full range of motion and I think it would be a great improvement.

I have recently started playing guitar, and have found out just how weak and inflexible my hand cabling is. I work in IT and am constantly typing, mousing, writing, or doing repetitive tasks like running screws into a network rack. As a result my hands are imbalanced in strength and horribly stiff. I have bought two of these: a light tension (the blue) to help rehabilitate my hands without straining them, and a medium (the red) as a stepping stone. Within the past few days my hands have noticeably loosened up and are already feel more flexible. At this point I cannot say much about the strengthening properties but I think we can take that as a given. The gripmaster certainly is well built and doesn't seem wobbly, overly flexible, or in any other way cheap. Flexibility and coordination have definitely improved in a short period of time, and with the small size (can go in a pocket so I don't look weird in the executive's office holding it)plus the low price point I would definitely recommend these. Whether you're playing guitar, rehabilitating your hands, or just want to impress the ladies (or guys if that's your speed) grab one of these badboys.***Note: Be sure to use your fingertips, and not the flat parts between your knuckles.

I've been getting into indoor bouldering recently, and wanted to improve my grip endurance. Picked up one of the medium tension exercisers (red) and had at it. I use it on and off at the office while on calls, sometimes while I'm driving and often while I'm watching tv.Using this is fun, and frustrating at first. You realize which of your fingers needs to be worked out more (for instance my left pinky and fourth finger were incredibly weak) so you learn to focus on those more. Now my fourth finger can press down on the single spring, and my pinky is doing okay. My hand grip has improved significantly (not enough though! gotta keep it up) and I feel like I have better dexterity (or at least surehandedness)as a result. The build quality is good - the rubber material doesn't make my skin feel weird, the plastic is well molded without sharp burrs that require trimming out of the box. The springs are well sprung, though I wonder if they are becoming more flexible over time, or my hands are improving in strength. Either way, they still provide a good amount of tension against my hands and will continue being a good desk companion for me.

I think this product is great! I have been using it everyday at work since delivered. I sit at my desk about 80% of my time, and type about 99% of the time. This thing has increased my ability to move my fingers with more control, meaning moving individual fingers with out moving the others. The main reason this product was purchased was to help my pinkie, regain its strength I tore a tendon on this finger playing Frisbee. It has helped tremendously. I would suggest to take baby steps, start with less reps and stay committed. Consistency is the key. Also, don't forget to check out the website for various workouts.Overall, this product is great, it has increased my grip when shooting my guns, improved my typing, and most importantly has helped strengthen my pinkie. I will be looking to upgrade to the "High Tension" in the near future, to further improve my hands/fingers. I would of liked the plastic bottom part to be rubber, I feel the grip would of been better, but its nothing to worry about. After all you want to do the exercises effectively with control, so the plastic does challenge you a bit.

Growing up I didn't have the firmest hand shake. I would go to business meetings and meet new people. They would reach out to shake my hand and I was nervous. I knew my handshake was weak and that says a lot about a man. So when I would shake their hand, they gave me the most disgusting look and I knew it affected what they thought about me. I probably didn't get that promotion I have been working for because of it. I decided to take action and look to the interwebs. When I saw GRIPMASTER HAND EXERCISER I thought to myself "This is it, I can start my life". I received in the mail and when I took it out I heard a choir of angels. From there, it was on. day after day I worked my hand.Just going and going. Never letting it out of my sight or my grip. My hand size went from a medium in gloves to an extra large. I didn't mind the new wardrobe, my hands deserve it now. So, after a couple of weeks of training. I set out into the world, feeling like a changed man. I went to greet my co workers new friend and when he went for the handshake. I took off my glove, and shook his hand. LIKE A GENTLEMAN.

Well this has to be about one of the best devices out there to strengthen your individual fingers. While other grip strengthening devices, like the "Captains of Crush" squeezers, will most surely improve one's overall grip, there's always a chance that the stronger fingers are doing most of the work, leaving the weaker ones getting a less than perfect workout. Not so with the Gripmaster.I've been lifting weights for over 20 years and after trying this, I found several of my fingers weak, that is being unable to participate a lot when I tried to squeeze my Gripmaster. I got the red one, which is medium tension, and while overall its not TOO hard to do, there are a few fingers that just can't keep up!I think what I'll do is just use this one until all my fingers can do the exercise equally, and then move up to the next higher tension model.Looking for a good way to strengthen the individual fingers? Try it- you'll be surprised how much of a workout some of your fingers will get. Guitar players, people who type a lot, or anyone trying to rehab a hand will greatly benefit. Also suggest

I bought both this regular version of the Gripmaster and the Pro version. I prefer the regular Gripmaster because it fits my hand better and because the concave buttons on the regular Gripmaster are more comfortable on my fingertips and keep my fingers from sliding off the buttons. I wondered if the regular Gripmaster was likely to wear out or break because the Pro version looks stronger. Well, the Pro version probably is stronger, but the regular grip master is sturdy, and I believe I will get years of use out of it before I need to replace it.Used properly - sets of 20 reps - the medium resistance of seven pounds per button feels like plenty of resistance.I warm up with the extra light and light Gripmasters before using this medium resistance. Exercising this way, I am gaining strength in my fingers for playing the piano and guitar, and I have not experienced any soreness or injuries – something that serious pianists might be concerned about.

Well, we ordered the Medium tension with 7 lb. resistance but when we tried it, it was nowhere near 7 lbs. We tested the tension and it measured in at 2.5 lbs. Of course Amazon gave us a refund without any problems (Amazon is AWESOME)... After messing with it for a few hours though I noticed something. I thought the one we were supposed to be getting was red but ours was green. At first I thought "maybe they come in different colors with the same tension". Anyway, I noticed on the Gripmaster is a print saying XX-light! The package says Medium however. Somehow, the wrong one was put into a medium package. This XX-light one does us no good as we bought it to help strengthen our trigger fingers for a more stable trigger pull.I will probably be buying one of the "Pro" models in either the 9 or 11 lb. Maybe both.To sum it all up, great little gadget providing you get the right one. No worries though, Amazon makes it right.

I still have no complaints about the grip master brand of hand strengtheners and I have been using them for years. I bought the black 9 lb. exerciser 6 years ago and it is still holding up strong after countless hours of hard use. The red 7 lb. exerciser that I purchased this time is still the same solid quailty that my other one is. I even got my father to buy two of them a while ago and they are also holding up great even though he uses them a lot and he carries one in his pocket everywhere. I have seen no deterioration of the tension springs even having used the black one for years so i expect nothing different from this one. As far as other reviewers having them break, that has not been my experience at all and both my dad and I have not been the most gentle with these. All in all still a great product that is the best I have found for overall strength and especially exercising each individual finger.

This is an excellent little gizmo for exercising your grip.I lost a finger and received tendon damage in a fight with a dog a few years ago, and have recently taken up fencing with the Sabre again, which needless to say is tricky without the prescribed number of digits on your sword-hand. I bought this item to improve my grip on my remaining fingers and it's been a great success. I began with the Red version here (7lbs) then moved on to Black (9lbs) and now I'm on the Grey (11lbs). I keep them on my desk at work and exercise my grip whilst I'm on the phone. The improvement in my grip strength has been enormous and I can maintain my grip on my Sabre even in the most vigorous blade-work.If you partake in a sport,or in any sort of activity, which requires firm and enduring grip, get yourself one of these, work consistently with it, and move up to the next grade when you are ready. It really works!
