Very impressed with this. It's an umbrella type so goes up in a second - no more messing around with poles. There's an internal diffuser and the main outer diffuser. There's a broad velcro rim on the softbox so it's easy to attach the outer diffuser and a grid (which I bought separately). The metal spokes of the umbrella mechanism are high quality and inspire confidence. Equally, the material of the softbox is considerably better than I was expecting and would pass at treble the price. Plus it comes with a nice carry bag. It produces a beautiful light with my speedlites (plus suitable adaptor) or with my studio heads, and with the added bonus of round catchlights. All the above completely sealed the deal.Minor grumbles are that,on my sample, it’s quite painful to collapse the umbrella mechanism. Strong pressure is required to push in the metal tab on the stem, and that metal tab is very narrow – so it proper hurts my non-macho fingers. I was disappointed to find that even this 80cm version remains quite big and cylindrical in its collapsed state. It’s definitely not as portable as the small, square, folding-type of softboxes (those that fold like a reflector into a tiny bag).Nonetheless, I’ve now ordered the 120cm version as well. This is because I’m knocked out with the premium-quality materials, ease of use, and budget price.Edit: I've now received the gridded 120cm version to add to the existing 80cm version. It's equally as impressive in terms of convenience (i.e umbrella style) and quality of materials. Fabulous kit for the money.FYI, I measure the 80cm version as 75cm diameter and the 120cm version as 110cm diameter. That's measured flat, straight across the front face, middle of one of the eight edges across to the middle of the opposite edge. That's not a complaint just one measure to indicate the size to expect.

Don't let people tell you that you'll never get better than {INSERT EXPENSIVE BRAND NAME} because when it comes to lighting modifiers it's just not true. The big manufacturers would like you to think that they have teams of mathematicians working on equations for the way light scatters, but the truth of the matter is that creating one of these things is more of a suck it and see endeavour. The reality is that light is very complex, and unlike the pyramid teabag people don't buy enough of these things to make it profitable to have a massive research staff labouring on the definition of "Soft light". It's basically subjective, and always will be, which means that if you like the way a certain modifier shapes light, and it doesn't fall apart, then it's the one for you. This for me makes nice light, better light than the way more expensive big brand named named equivalent that is also sitting in my photography den [which one day will turn into a studio, when I have the money :-)]. Why only four stars, well it's not really build quality, it 's just that since this was developed better designs have come onto the market that don't require you to wrestle with metal rods, but to be fair if I did have a permanent studio I'd simply leave this assembled, and also this is very inexpensive for what you get. As it is I generally shoot events, headshots, and location, so the time it takes to putt up and tearing down a modifier does matter to me. This is by far not the worst of it's type, but I have seen better designs, and if your doing this over and over again it's only a mater of time before something rips or bends, but that's true of pretty all modifiers of this type. So in summary on quality vs cost I would definitely recommend this, but I'd also recommend using it to see if you like the output...

I've seen reviews for much more expensive softboxes than this one which don't seem half as good. Where to start? First putting it up, the box is already put together so there's no need to put rod a in slot one, rod pop out poke you in the eye and start again. It is just like putting up a large brolly, but you will need to put the mount on a firm surface. Secondly put your light on the box rather than the other way round or you will be in for a fight, but again this is more simple than I was expecting although I advise sandbags to steady your light stand. Finally and most important the quality of light, it is advertised as suitable for up to 650ws.My lights are only 300ws but I get f10 to f10.5 wherever I tested which is a phenomenal 1/6 of a stop difference at 2/3 power. (I'm working on f8-f11 being one full stop) Would I recommended this product from this supplier (5 day delivery over Easter weekend)? I'd call you a fool not to buy one if you are interested in an extremely soft light with no hard shadows either for head shots or productsUpdate: It's been over two years since I first got this modifier and it’s easily my most used modifier. It’s incredibly easy to put up and take down, it gives a big soft light and incredibly versatile. I bought a 120x180cm as an alternative and another large light to use with it, but even though that light only has four rods it takes at least twice as long to put up and is much more work. I’ve noticed people saying this octabox is hard to put it down, which I found to begin with, but the trick is to push the rod as if you were putting it up and release the pressure on the catch it goes down very easily.

Really happy with this purchase. There is no substitute for a large diffuser if one wants to shoot with soft shadows and a nice even light output. This 150cm folding softbox umbrella is very well made for the price. I've read that some find the release for the center post is unkind to the fingers or thumb, however it's quite usual for any mechanism of this kind to be hard to operate while under full tension. If one puts the umbrella speed ring down on the floor and push down on the center ring which the ribs are attached to, it's quite easy to depress the release tab. If this is not done, yes it will be hard to depress, no doubt of that. Just requires a little thought, not in any way a flaw with the product. This diffuser is fantastic for working with a single strobe, one can get great images without having to spend ages setting up, as the light is so forgiving. All I would add is that if buying the 150cm unit, it's big. I knew this before buying, it's why I bought it as smaller units have different characteristics in terms of light output.Highly recommended.

This is a great quality product at a third of the price of the big-brand ones. It's a solid and well-built piece of kit and looks sturdy enough to take the punishment of frequent use (assembling and taking apart is usually what breaks the cheaper studio kit). A really great feature of this one is that it is a simple open and close umbrella design whereas the cheaper versions usually come as fiddly spoke and arm assembly units. The outer material is reasonably thick canvas rather than the cheap nylon it could have been. Finally the Bowens replica coupling is cast metal and neatly finished so I expect it to withstand many iterations of on-off my Gemini lamps and hold the softbox firmly in place while fitted.I am really pleased with this and have been burned enough times in the past trying to save a bit of cash by buying generic equipment that I wanted to pass on to others in a similar position that this is one of the good pieces of generic kit.

Shocked by how good quality this is, heavy weight cordura type material rather than the thin nylon of one i have that cost 4 times the price. The inner foil seems very solid as well. That said it does make it a bit heavy so needs a decent light stand. The metal parts seem ok, not quite as chunky as another i have but they provide a spare centre post where the catch is that keeps it open, the umbrella bit, so it should last well. I can confirm the 95cm Octagon version is the Umbrella type, in fact i emailed Phot-R and they said all their light boxes were.I notice a lot of people saying it hurt their hands to press the catch in to close this but you can avoid that by pressing the centre down a bit (as when you are opening it)that will take the pressure off the catch and it's then easy to close.Comes with a good enough draw sting bag as wellNext day delivery from West Base for the included free post price. Very happy with this purchase

I didn't realise until this arrived that it uses the 'umbrella' method to open rather than having to insert rods into the mounting ring, so I can out this up far faster than my smaller Newer octabox. The construction is very solid and the reflector fabric is robust. The back of the reflector can be opened via Velcro flaps, and it is possible to use the box as a giant reflector while poking your lens through the back by opening one of those.Comes with internal and external diffusers and the 'egg crate'; the latter would cost twice as much as the Phot-R alone if bought as a 'marque' accessory. As you would expect from a box this size, it gives beautifully soft wrap-round light for portraits, and is big enough to use as a white background for head and shoulders shots. At less than £50 this is an absolute bargain.

I have to say for the money this is a very good quality product, well made with what seems to be a nice thick quality material, also the delivery was super quick, I had to phone the company for a replacement outer diffuser as the one that came was not quite right, however I have to say the customer service was excellent and Kimberly who I spoke to dispatched another one right away, the only thing I would say is the umbrella shaft is about an inch to long as it protrudes a bit too much, so I have given feedback to the company regarding this and hopefully it will be acted on, however it's not a deal breaker and I will just cut an inch off with a hacksaw which should do the trick,I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one even if I have to do the same with that one

Fantastic product. Solid, sturdy, made from durable materials. The great thing about this is that you can keep both diffusing baffles attached and detach just a small part to allow for an opening for your hand to close the softbox - this way you can set it up in seconds (you'll need to reattach just a small part of the outer baffle). 95cm is a very portable size and yet large enough for most needs whether you shoot close up portraits or full body shots. The only drawback is how tight the umbrella release pin is (when closing) - the trick is to push the umbrella mechanism further as if opening more and carefully press the pin down (this reduces the friction and it is much easier to push the pin down)- this can be done with one hand after little practice.

Looks great and seems to be of good build quality. Have tried to set it up and found it a bit of a struggle to get it erected, getting it over the last bit, proved a problem for myself, younger people might not have this problem, also for getting it down. For getting it up, had to set the ring bit on solid surface, like wooden floor, to push it fully over the umbrella style fastening. Once secured, it can be used either a soft box, with the fastenings supplied. Not to sure if one could use it as an umbrella.Fact that it has a Bowens S type fitment was a winner for myself.Build quality seems great, well made, should last, only time will tell.Value for money, seems excellent. Will certainly look at PHOT-R products in the future.

Erm... I will confess to being surprised by this. My history with light modifiers involves something that looks similar to a solo game of twister to get them together so I was not looking forward to opening this. In the package is the egg crate attachment in one bag, then one large nylon bag containing the already assembled octabox. It really is as simple as opening an umbrella and using two hands to click it into place. The diffuser goes on very easily. There's a nice access slot to get at the flash unit once it's in. From opening the package to having it all assembled really was under 3 minutes (not including egg crate). Taking it all down was seconds. It even stands up nicely once it's in its bag.

I wasn't quite prepared for how big this softbox is, despite ordering the 150cm version. You do need a fair bit of space to get the best out of i, but that aside, it's a great bit of kit. Light spread is even and balanced, which is what it's all about. The umbrella style design makes setting up and packing away simple. And as other reviewers have said, placing the umbrella upside down and applying slight pressure on the centre plate allows you to push it free of the locking arrangement so it can be collapsed without the risk of trapping your fingers. Highly recommended softbox.

Great Octobox, gives lovely light - I bought a Bowens 'S' fit version, and it fits well on my Neewer studio heads, and a Bowens 'S' adaptor for Speedlights - but NOT on my Bowens own brand head - it jammed on tight, and I had to dismantle the whole thing to remove the mounting ring from the Bowens head.I tried it on three Bowens, and it was the same story on each - I then tried filing the lugs to make it fit easily, but that didn't work either. For the money, it's great value, and in use provided great results - just be careful if mounting to an actual Bowens head though...!

In a world of high end photography kit, Phot R blow it all out the water. I’ve been using higher end Elinchrom Rotalux and Broncolor in the studio for the past few years but needed a solidly built soft box for my portable Godox battery powered flash. The thing is built like a £400 octabox I kid you not. Super durable, easily collapsible and strong Velcro for the diffusion panels. I have had this fall and take damage and not even fray or bend.I typically use this with a flashgun at a wedding for creative lighting either on a monopods and assistant or a 3m heavy duty stand.

I liked this product very much.Excellent quality of materials and opening (umbrella like) mechanism. It is the ultimate tool for your studio as it produces nice lighting for portraits or for still life photography.I am disappointed with my choice though, because of not measuring right my needs! This product (150cm) is too big for my needs (portability, small spaces, etc). Also, due to its size, my (cheap) tripods could not handle it.Now i am looking to sell it so to buy a new one from the same company (80 or 95cm not sure yet).
