I'm writing this product review four years after purchase. I've had it long enough now to be able to give a well-rounded review and also am now looking to replace it, so can share my thoughts as I move on from this model.First, I need to start with the positives. This is an overwhelming good toothbrush. It lives up to its name and has a very sonic hum sound to the vibration and, perhaps it's mostly psychological, it makes me think that it is blasting off the plaque from my teeth from the sound (and feel in my mouth). I share a house with people who use a different (leading) brand of electric toothbrush and their toothbrush (although newer than mine) has an almost grinding/jarring sound to it.What I've never been able to get a solid answer on is whether a much slower brush rate is better for cleaning.Second, even four years later, I absolutely have to comment on how beautifully clean my teeth feel after use. They feel shiny and smooth and I can't feel any plaque residue on my teeth close to the gums. The only way I can describe it is feeling like I have just been to the dentist. I might have expected to get used to that sensation/feeling, and almost complacent, but four years later, I still brush my teeth and am hit by the feeling of cleanliness after a brush. In terms of the accessories: the app was really helpful in training me to brush my teeth properly, in the sense of spending enough time in each area and making sure that I wasn't brushing too hard, nor rushing. The UV sanitiser is an outstanding accessory and something that almost feels like it should be standard given the nature of brushing and dental/oral hygiene. I've since discovered this isn't largely available, so if you can get a brush with this included, do.All in all, I've read a lot of reviews that seem to suggest the toothbrush doesn't last much more than 2 years. Mine functions perfectly fine still, but I am looking for a new one simply because of extreme cosmetic wear, wantingan update (and to benefit from the latest advancement in tooth cleaning tech), and because the battery is not what it was (which happens with all electrics over time). Now let's cover the negatives:- It's a minor one, and perhaps to be expected, but I went for a white handle. Over the last year and a bit, this has really started to become discoloured to the point where it looks very unattractive. I know this happens with white goods, but just be aware that it really does start to age the product very quickly. It may always be an idea to purchase black handles to avoid this.- One thing that has always really bothered me is that the toothbrush head does not fit flush to the handle. This therefore allows quite a build up of dirt. This can obviously be cleaned off but that's quite a commitment and, if not kept on top of daily, it becomes quite an issue. It's almost perished the rubber seal on my toothbrush and I can't tell if it's inhibiting some of the vibration. One major design flaw that Phillips haven't even amended in their latest model is the 'gaps' or 'space' around the buttons. This is a really obvious place for dirt to build up and, in my case, limescale. After a while, the buttons get really difficult to use because they're almost locked into place by the dirt/limescale/toothpaste. The other leading brand of toothbrush has a design which gets around this.- The toothbrush heads were quite affordable when I first bought this product. Now, they're increased the prices of them quite dramatically, which I find slightly disingenuous. Brush heads definitely do need to be replaced and it's important to do so, but it shouldn't put a hole in your pocket.- The battery - one thing I always felt with this brush is that when it was on 1-2 bars, the brushing power was compromised. I never want a compromised brush, so I'd rather the battery just be showing as flat if it can't deliver 100% brush power. The truth of the matter is is that I was genuinely blown away by this toothbrush, and have really enjoyed using it and it still does work very well to this day. There are some things I wish Phillips will take on board as they continue to launch new models, but I think I'll be sticking with the brand as I look for a new toothbrush to replace this one.

Prior to using the Philips sonicare connected i was using a top end competitors electric toothbrush with fairly successful results. The philips brush is completely different in that the brush vibrates rather than employing a rotating head.I found that this method of cleaning felt very comfortable and not at all harsh and was very impressed with the results. After cleaning my mouth felt refreshed and the length of the brush meant that I felt that I could effectively clean along the gum line.I was very impressed the performance and happily changed to use this as my daily toothbrush. However the great thing about this brush is that it allows you to connect to a smartphone and use the app foradditional features.Personally I feel that with dental hygiene routines a lot of success comes from the correct motivation.and in this area Philips have excelled with the sonicare app. Philips have produced something very similar to what fitbit have produced for activity tracking. The sonicare app is full of features and thoughtful extras. The app makes full use of the brushes technology and visually charts the cleaning process so you can check that you are cleaning all required areas. I found the charts very motivating and also helpful in that it informs you or the areas which need to be cleaned again. When cleaning your teeth the brush can vibrate and the app will beep to alert you to move onto the next section. When finished cleaning the app will show which areas have been neglected and then allows you to touch up the required areas. With your cleaning routine saved daily you can then check how well you are doing with your brushing technique. The app also allows you to set certain specific goals for different areas of dental health – whitening, plaque removal, fresh breath and gum health. For example with gum health you can put focus on tongue cleaning or interdental use and this is then charted on a calendar so you can track your progress. The app even allows you to highlight specific problem areas within the mouth for example areas which are prone to bleeding. To further track and highlight your performance the app will allow you to create a progress report based on your history of using the toothbrush and app. This creates a PDF report which shows brushing frequency as well as other dental hygiene and also areas require further attention. This report can then be shared to your dental profession or anyone else. I wouldn’t imagine that this would be of any real use to your dentist but it is useful if you want to keep your own records outside of the app.The app has a host of reminder options including one which informs you when to replace your brush heads which is extremely useful as i am always forgetting to replace them and often use them past the recommended 3 month period. You can also choose to purchase replacement brush heads via the app and it gives you an option to purchase from various online retailers.I had no problems with connectivity and it was very simple to pair with my Android phone running Android Marshmallow.Another great feature which excels over my previous electric toothbrush is the battery life – the Philips brush would be able to function for 3 weeks using a single charge which is extremely useful especially when travelling. The brush was bundled with a UV sanitiser however I could not find any evidence to show that this was actually benefical or more than just a gimmick. I would assume that if one changes brush heads every 3 months then this is probably unnecessary however it does function as an additional charger. The Philips soniccare is the best toothbrush I have owned and used and there are many features which are extremely useful and which I use on a daily basis.I believe that the brush promotes and encourage good dental practice and that it can make the difference to your dental hygiene. It is certainly one of the best health products I have obtained and I would highly recommend especially to anyone experience poor dental health.

Before receiving this, I would have balked at spending around £150 for a toothbrush. However since using this the difference has been pretty close to the transition from a manual to an electric toothbrush.Using a traditional brushhead, the Sonicare Flex from the head looks old school and I perceived it to perform poorly. The handle looks extremely high quality, with a nice solid weigh, despite actually being lighter than my 3 year old Braun. Upon powering this on there is clearly a big difference in how the two brushes work. My Braun has a small brush head that is being rotated clockwise/anticlockwise very quickly to polish the surface of your teeth. When running under water, the water runs through and around the brush. With the Sonicare, the brush is vibrating so quickly, it looks like it's not even moving. However when running under water, all the water gets redirected as spray, indicating how powerful this brush is.There are a multitude of settings, which affecting the timing, and/or the pulse of the vibration rhythm for different effects. The default clean more should suit most people fine and includes a 2 minute timer which turns the brush off automatically within that period. The brush makes much better contact with the teeth on all sides compared to a Braun, and teeth come out at the end with that just out the dentist clean feeling, something the Braun hasn't done since probably the first 6 months of owning that. If even sounds a little like a dentist drill, which may or may not be a positive thing for you. For me it was an indicator of a quality motor.Upon the first few uses, my gums have actually bled a little despite flossing regularly and using the pressure correctly. The Sonicare makes it plainly obvious when you've applied too much pressure unlike the Braun, by changing the sound, and vibration feel when you're pressing too hard. I liked the fact that you didn't actually have to press too hard to trigger this. With my Braun you pretty much have to press so hard the bristles can't move to register a change in motor.I've read this brush should have a good 3 weeks charge, making it excellent as a brush to take on a medium length long distance trip abroad without having to take the charger. That said, the charger is a handy travel size and the brush comes with an excellent case, so I'll definitely be taking the whole package when travelling for longer than a short city break. One key thing to note about the head is that unlike my Braun, with a back of the brush head, water doesn't leak from the brush head into the handle unit. This is excellent, as those that own Brauns will know how the stainless steel connection on the brush handle can get grimy and even rust if you don't wash properly. For any water that does get in when pulling the head out to dry, it's easily wiped away.In all, the brush looks excellent, performs brilliantly to the point I could honestly recommend spending upwards £100 for a similar brush when needed in the future. In the same vein you can't go back to a manual toothbrush after using an electric, once you try a Sonicare, it's difficult to make a case for a Braun even at the cheaper price. After all, you get one good set of teeth, and you can't really put a price on that.Edit: So it's been just over a month since I wrote this review and the brush is still charged! The battery indicator is at one green dot but in terms of power, it feels close to how it did at full charge. Quite often Braun brushes feel much weaker when battery is 2-3 days from empty. Seriously impressed.

It is hard to really praise an expensive toothbrush, as to be fair not everyone can afford this, but the experience I have had with this brush is simply amazing. I am very aware of my teeth and personally think the overall experience delivered by this brush is worth it.Last year I discovered how much better the Philips brushes were than the Oral-B's I had used for years - the shape of the brush is much better and the softness reduces gum wear, but with this brush I can now say that I have had the ultimate brushing experience! This brush will not disappoint!Firstly, this brush feels good in the hand and there is a higher amount of play on the flexibility of the brush stem in the mouth. One charge with the compact charging stand seems to last (I haven't had it three weeks yet,but I have enjoyed using it so much that I have given it a lot of time and not had to charge it yet. Simply this has a higher quality battery and will go a lot longer between charges. In models that are price competitive a low cost battery is a must, but when you pay more you can have the best battery available. My existing Philips also has a travel case and I have found that very helpful in the past, I expect the same from this new brush & case.Secondly the control of this brush is greater than cheaper models. If you press hard on your gums with an electric toothbrush it can do a lot of harm to them quite quickly. Even when I used a manual brush, my dentist would regularly tell me off for 'over-brushing' and for simply pressing too hard. Now this brush will actually give you a vibrate signal to let you know that you are pressing to hard and the design of the brush will reduce the pressure you are putting on your gums. To clarify - the brush automatically reduces pressure, so that you don't damage your gums, but the brush also vibrates to tell you that you are pressing too hard - so, slowly it trains you not to apply too much pressure. Not only is this a good feature for me personally, but I am literally overwhelmed by the health of my gums with this new brush! The clean is controllable also to three levels and the deep clean feature is available for people who are prone to staining - heavy tea drinkers, smokers, etc. Basically the deep clean feature just takes 50% longer - 3 minutes instead of 2.The standard features are there too, such as a buzz every thirty seconds to tell you to move on to the next quadrant in your mouth, for a standard 2 minute clean. The unique selling point of this brush is without doubt its UV sanitiser! Simply take the head off the brush and put it into the sanitiser, (perhaps whilst putting your brush handle onto charge?) and the UV light will flood around the brush head killing 99% (allegedly) of germs. I have long maintained that your toothbrush must be one of the dirtiest things in your house, and now that will no longer be true! What does not go without saying is the great sense of cleansing that you get with all these Sonicare brushes - it is simply a better experience than from Oral-B or Colgate, not just because of the brush design, but because of the sense that they are functioning at a higher level - the vibration in your mouth is quite different it feels like the plaque is being shaken off.I cannot fully express how much I like this product or how convinced I am that this is a major step forward in toothbrush design. It certainly delivers a superior brushing experience and I thoroughly recommend this to you. It is expensive but it fully deserves 5 stars!

Have very happily used Sonicare electric toothbrushes for 4 years after my dentist strongly recommended I start using one to give my long suffering teeth a better long term future. This latest model is impressive in including not only three cleaning modes ( a normal 2 minute clean but also an extended deep clean and a whiten model or stain removal) but three intensity settings so you can adjust it to your preference. The adjustable intensity setting will also allow new users to get used to the Sonicare cleaning action by, if they so wish, increasing the power over time from an initial low setting. The cleaning process is improved by a pressure sensor that helps you avoid pressing too hard, very useful as the Sonicare really does not need anything other than a fairly gently application and slow movement. A cleaning timer also gives a quiet but forceful reminder every 3 seconds to move to another quadrant in your mouth.A compact hard travel case is included. This doesn't have room for the normal charger ( a small base without UV sanitizer) but a fully charged Sonicare should easily last even a long holiday and we have never had to take a charger on our travels. I leave the Sonicare on an overnight charge ( done via a shaving socket) to get a full recharge of the lithium ion battery. Being lithium ion, the battery shouldn't suffer from the life shortening memory effect of older types of rechargeable batteries. You can safely boost your Sonicare at any point without worrying about the impact on the longevity of its battery.Only one brush head supplied ( some older models used to give two) but replacements are widely available albeit are still on the expensive side, being the very latest design which currently costs circa £30 for a pack of 4 on Amazon. The Sonicare itself has a simple easy to use design that is comfortable to hold with a nicely sized on/off button and a small but easy to use selector for cleaning style. Three small lights indicate charge level and each of the three cleaning actions also has a small light indicating which has been selected. This model also has a separate UV sanitizer that can take two brush heads and bathes them in a satisfyingly blue UV light. For the ultimate in dental hygiene, it can only be a good thing to rid your cleaning heads of 'nasties' every so often although in practice we need to remind ourselves to do it. Very much a nice to have rather than an essential and you can buy the UV unit separately as a spare. As with all electric toothbrushes, it pays after use to remove the head to give a quick clean between the replaceable brush and the main unit as this will, avoid the build up of the water/toothpaste mix that wiill work its way into this gap. Good hygiene practice means this should be a normal task anyway but our experience ( we were a tad lazy when we first converted to electric toothbrushes and left the brush head on for extented periods.) was that a few seconds cleaning with each use pays dividends in long term use.In summary ,this Sonicare has a really impressive cleaning performance and is a definite improvement on earlier generations. You really can feel the difference in terms of plaque removal and the whiten mode with an appropriate toothpaste is also particularly effective. Sonicares are normally available on Amazon at significant discount to the normal rrp and assuming that you can obtain one at a reasonable price, this model is highly recommended.

I bought this sonic toothbrush because my existing Philips toothbrush suddenly died over Easter. £60 was too good a deal to miss! This toothbrush came well packaged, and was very easy to setup. However, the instructions were not the best and didn't go into enough detail about how to use the functions on the handset itself. Despite this it was easy to find the information on the Internet. It took quite a while for the handset to initially charge, by which I mean it took at least a day for me to be confident that it had fully charged. All the lights on the handset disappeared when it was fully charged so it was easy to see when this was the case. The toothbrush has three buttons. The top button is an on off switch. The middle button is a longer one and changes the intensity from levels 1 2 or 3. 3 is the highest level intensity and the levels are easy to see because there are three lights which come on. The small bottom button chooses the type of cleaning that you want. You can choose clean, white, and deep clean. The deep clean option runs longer than the other two. You do have to select your cleaning options before you switch your toothbrush on but the intensity can be altered during use. You should also wet it, and apply your toothpaste before you switch it on. Otherwise you will end up with a face full!My old sonic toothbrush was great, and did the job very nicely. However this toothbrush feels completely different. It is turbo charged, like a hurricane in my mouth! My old Philips toothbrush made the toothpaste frothy and bubbly. This one reduces the toothpaste to liquid. It's very strange. The pulse and motion pushes toothpaste through the gaps in your teeth ensuring a better clean. At least that is the theory. And it does feel like that's what it does, especially when the toothpaste ends up as liquid in your mouth. The 2 minute timer ensures the correct amount of time can be spent on each area of the teeth and the pressure sensor which comes already activated means that if you press too hard on your teeth the pulse changes and informs you to lighten up the pressure.Your teeth feel fantastically clean after, particularly if you have never used an electric toothbrush before and come to use it after only using a manual toothbrush. I was struck at how powerful the toothbrush feels when in use. It felt twice as powerful as my previous one. The only downside, and the reason I only gave it 4 stars and not 5, is that the charge doesn't last as long as my old toothbrush. In fact I'm a little disappointed about that part. My previous toothbrush would last well into the second or third week before requiring a charge. This requires charging sooner. This is partly because I do not stick to the 2 minute timer though and use it up to 3 or 4 times each time I clean my teeth. Still, it doesn't hold the charge as long.It also lost the star because it's really messy to use, the toothpaste liquid dribbles out of your mouth and sometimes down the handle. This is an amazing toothbrush, it does the job and the provided toothbrush head is comfortable to use and easy to snap-on and pull off. The replacement toothbrush heads are ridiculously expensive if you go for the same one that is provided but this is not necessary. All in all, I am thrilled with my purchase and just hope that this toothbrush lasts longer than my previous Philips one did!

SUMMARY* The Sonicare system beats the competition hands down in terms of ability to clean* This is a well designed and attractive toothbrush* This comprehensive kit gives you everything you might need, except for extra brush heads (order more now)* After receiving a test sample I purchased my own, and can recommend it as a good buy.I approached my test of this product with quite a bit of trepidation and fear of pain! For a long time I'd been successfully deterred from buying one of these because of the supposed claims by a competitor about the preference of dentists. So for years I'd been using Braun electric brushes, but had increasingly become disenchanted with them. Even my own dentist told me "Oh no,with your sensitive teeth a Sonicare will hurt - best avoid that!" Well folks, it's all tosh, because this is a really SUPERB brush and my sensitive teeth are not bothered in the slightest. In fact they're the cleanest they've been in years!I really do like the action of this brush. Instead of a wide, relatively slow sweep of the Braun, this brush moves the bristles a smaller distance but incredibly quickly. Ultrasonic cleaning is the same technology as used by your professional dental hygienist actually, so it's very effective - much more so in my experience than the slow scrubbing action of the Braun and others. With this brush you get lots of control options which are easy to set via the buttons and allow you to change both the cleaning program and intensity. As I said before, the cleaning performance of this brush is amazing - far better than any of the six or so other electric brushes I've owned.Design is excellent, and this is a good looking brush. I like the fact the handle is made entirely from hard plastic - the rubber coating on my last Braun went sticky after two years and I ended up throwing it away as a result, which was an annoying waste of my money. I really appreciate all the extras you get with this kit - two chargers and a travel case! Well done for looking after your customers Philips. The large charger has an integrated and automatic UV brush head sterilizer and the small charger base is very easy to pack in a suitcase. Having said that I've taken my brush away several times and it lasts for two weeks on a single charge!Cons? Only one brush head is supplied with the kit, so you'll need to order more now, especially for couples or family use. Brushes do seem to last a surprisingly long time though. And the Bluetooth thing. I don't like that aspect, so I don't use it. Yes, it might give you feedback on your phone but I'm intelligent enough to brush my teeth and I choose not to share all my contact data, emails, pictures and personal information with manufacturers thank you very much. As a list of cons goes, it's minimal, and both can be overcome entirely - purchase more brush heads and don't download the app. Sorted. Some reviewers have had reliability issues, but my unit has worked perfectly.CONCLUSIONHaving lived with the Sonicare and given it a long term test over a period of at least a year, I can honestly say that it surpasses anything else I've encountered to-date. It's a joy to own and use, has never let me down, and when I come to buy another brush - whenever that may be - it will definitely be a Sonicare. I've been converted.

The Phillips Sonicare range are very effective albeit expensive toothbrushes. The HX9171 Platinum (with sanitizer) toothbrush has been improved compared to the diamond clean version in my opinion. Both are recommended, a comparison of both is below. In the box=======In the box is brief instruction, the tooth brush body, one head with cover, a travel case, a charger with two pin plug suitable for a shaver socket, and a charger with a UV light source in a case to clean the brush heads with, and a separate charger. The Diamond clean has no brush head sanitizer, the charger stand is a glass and the carrycase also permits charging through a USB cable.Charging======The toothbrush like all/most comes with a 2 pin plug which fits in a shaver socket,or it can be plugged into a 3 pin standard wall socket with an adapter. The toothbrush takes 24 hours to charge, although the one sent had a enough charge after an hour for initial use. Phillips claim it only needs charging every 3 weeks, that has been the case with the Diamond clean it has good battery life.Design and functions=============The toothbrush handle back is textured and the front has a metal panel insert, an improvement on the Diamond clean which was smooth and slippery to hold when wet. The HX9171 has 3 intensity settings, and three modes: white, clean and deep clean. The settings can be selected when the brush is off. This is better than the diamond clean, which although it has 5 modes was tricky to use as they can only be selected when the tooth brush was on, and then selection was by cycling through them as the settings can’t be seen on the handle unless it was on. The brush vibration can seem a bit odd when first used and the brush can be set to reduce the intensity so users can gradually become accustomed to it. The intensity and modes are also useful for brace wearers who want a good clean but don’t want to dislodge the brace from their teeth. The toothbrush has a timer and vibrates every 30s to allow a 2 minutes cycles to assist even cleaning around the mouth. The brush head has a solid plastic core, but soft plastic edge which allows it to flex more easily than another brush heads. Only one head is supplied which is a bit cheap scape for such an expensive toothbrush.Brush head cleaning=============The UV light is in a small chamber with two pegs for 2 toothbrush heads. The brush head is air dried for a few minutes, placed in the chamber, the door closed and the on button pressed. A blue light can be seen through an opaqued window. The light goes out automatically after 10 mins or if the door is opened. With out a microbiology test kit its impossible to tell if its effective.Case===The toothbrush is large even compared to other electric toothbrushes and the case is huge, with a transparent lid and space for two brush heads. There are small ventilation holes at each end to permit the brush heads to dry. However the case is not as solidly constructed as the Diamond clean which can be used as a portable charger. But with a 3 week battery life charging through the travel box is a luxury most of us can live without. The Sonicare brushes do give a very good clean, teeth feel like after visit to the dental hygienist. Although dental floss and in between brushes are still need. Overall recommended.

As someone who found out that I have gum disease almost thirty years ago, the period since then has been a constant battle to keep my teeth. I found out was that I had one loose tooth at the front, and went to a dentist who having X rayed my mouth, showed me the dreadful truth, that below the surface the tooth root had been eroded to little more than a spike. I want to emphasise that I have never needed a filling and brushed my teeth regularly. The problems were all due to un-removed plaque. So I have an interest in removing plague and thirty years later, still have the loose tooth, but have kept the problem at bay by assiduous cleaning. That is why you need an electric tooth brush, plus ideally, other aids like tee pee interdental cleaners. (In my experience, flossing does not work very well). This brush is excellent offering truly fast speeds for vibrating the plaque off the gums and the gum line. It is the gum line you need to focus on and the inter dental spaces, as the modern toothpastes are so good that their frankly is little risk of decay unless you are soaking your mouth in sugar, which of course you might be.The brush head is great, really well shaped, and possible to get to the gum line and between the teeth with a prominent fore part of the brush. Incidentally, an examination of the head would seem to suggest that it vibrates really fast in a sweeping action (It is just a blur) The speed of the brush is really so fast, you only have to hear it to realize that you are getting a superior cleaning experience. There are three intensity levels and you know which one you are on as one little led lights up for level 1, two for level 2 and three for level 3. all easily set with a press of an up down button. in addition you can choose brushing modes, clean, white (2 minutes clean and thirty seconds to brighten and polish or deep clean, three minutes of alternating cleaning and massaging really look after the gums. Thus you have nine combinations. There is a pressure sensor which you can easily de-activate, though not while you are cleaning. You need to place it on the charger and press and hold the power on/off button and the mode button for 2 seconds. Nothing complicated.Like a lot of electric brushes, you have a quad pacer, just a pause/.stutter in the brushing cycle which lets you know to change to a different quarter of the jaw.And if you want a more gentle experience, activate the easy start button, (by placing on the charger and holding the power on/off button for 2 seconds. This will ease you automatically from a less powerful brushing to a more powerful one over 14 brushings. Then there is the sanitiser... which sanitises the brush head by UV radiation. For safety sake, this can only be activated when the door of the unit is closed and will stop if you open the door during the 10 minute UV cleaning cycle.A travel charger unit is provided for travelling, as is a case for the brush itself. It is not just the features, but try this brush and you will be extremely satisfied with its efficiency at cleaning your teeth, removing plaque and keeping dental bills low.in my opinion, is a very valuable contribution to dental health. Used twice a day, I believe it really will be a great aid in keeping your teeth into old age.

Absolutely love this toothbrush. I have been using sonic toothbrushes for years, and would always use a Philips. One of the things I love about this package is the sanitiser. You just pop the head off the toothbrush, fit it into the sanitiser, press the button on the top and in a few minutes 99% of bacteria on the brush has been killed. It just keeps your toothbrush head fresher and more hygienic.Another thing I like about this is the travel case you got for the toothbrush. It neatly stores the toothbrush and two heads in a hard plastic container. So not only does the heard plastic container prevent accidentally turning the toothbrush on, it also keeps it safe from accidental damage. It also has air holes where the toothbrush heads are stored, so it also helps them dry out after use.You also get two different charging bases - one has the sanitiser and the other is a travel base/charger and is nice and small. They only come with a two pin plug of course. So if you have a shave point in your bathroom, then it's fine for use in the bathroom. For everyone else you will need to get a shaving plug adaptor, you can pick them up for about a pound or less.So the toothbrush. it has three different settings - clean, white and deep clean - select the different mode with the round button on the bottom of the toothbrush. I prefer to have mine on deep clean, but you will find your own favourite. It also has three different levels of intensity, which you control by pressing the + or - button. The brush also has time controls on it, so when it is on, it stops then starts when it is time to change the cleaning zone in your mouth. It will then also turn itself off after two minutes. The battery should last for up to three weeks between charges. But there are three little lights at the bottom of the toothbrush to let you know roughly how much battery is left. I tend to charge mine when it gets down to one light. The toothbrush only comes with one head, but with so many different types of heads out there you will have to pick the one best for you - I like the Diamond clean head (although after according to the box, the AdaptiveClean brush head is probably better). But it is so easy to change the toothbrush heads that several people can use the toothbrush body. The box states the toothbrush is also safe to use on orthodontics, dental work, veneers and implant material. If you do end up pressing too hard on your teeth/gums the toothbrush will let you know. You really only need to lightly pass the brush over the teeth.Philips not only give you a two year warranty, they also let you try the brush for 28 days and if you aren't 100% satisfied, they will give you a refund. You can't say fairer than that. But I am sure you will love it as much as I do.Just a quick word about the toothbrush heads. There are many different ones out there and they are quite easy to get a hold off. And most have a system where they tell you when to replace them, there are some different coloured bristles - usually green - where the colour fades over time telling you when to replace the head. I usually use them for three months before replacing the head anyway. But don't forget you have the sanitiser to deep clean them too.

Sonicare toothbrushes are my absolute favourite, and no other brand I have tried has come close to the clean feeling experienced when using Sonicare. The HX9171/20 is up there with the best of the range, and I highly recommend it.There are three modes of brushing available when using this particular toothbrush. These are:- Clean, White, and Deep Clean. I have tried all three modes at different points, but I much prefer the 'White' mode. This particular mode aims to reduce staining within a week, and it leaves your teeth feeling amazing. As a parent of a toddler, I don't get a lot of sleep, so I rely heavily on caffeinated drinks like gallons of coffee. As such,I like to think that the Sonicare range is actively helping me to minimise the effects that these drinks would have on my teeth.Whilst using my new toothbrush, I had a fleeting thought about whether the Sonicare could in any way affect my fillings...I want my toothbrush to prevent any new fillings, not cause my existing ones to loosen! Thankfully, Philips have tested the HX9171/20 on fillings, crowns, braces and veneers. and found no ill effects on any of them. One feature that I particularly like about the FlexCare, is that the toothbrush indicates the passing of every 30 seconds. In this way, you can ensure that you move to the next quadrant of your mouth with each new alert. With the 'Clean' setting lasting for two minutes exactly, this is ideal. With the 'White' setting, I use the remaining half a minute to go back over the front teeth. The toothbrush itself is well-designed. The handle feels nice and it isn't too heavy. The Adaptive Clean brush head, that comes as standard, has up to 4 times the surface contact, and up to 10 times the plaque removal. The toothbrush comes with a charging travel case, which is just perfect for taking away with you. You can charge it whilst it is stored inside the case, so you do not have to take the more cumbersome charging unit and sanitiser with you. The sanitiser itself is just a lovely addition. I always get a little paranoid when I think about the proximity of toothbrushes in relation to where the toilet is! By using this nifty device, you can be assured that at least 99% of the germs that find their way to your toothbrush head have been annihilated through the use of UV light technology. One last thing to note about the FlexCare Sonicare is that the charge holds amazingly well. I have got a full week and a half out of one charge, which is good considering that I like to use the longer cleaning modes, and that I sometimes brush three times a day. I even got almost a weeks usage straight from the box, as it was already charged upon arrival. Bearing in mind that I use the longer brushing modes, it means that the standard 'Clean' setting should give you at least two to three weeks of use per charge! Not many toothbrushes can do that.Overall, I am very pleased with the performance of the Philips Sonicare HX9171/20 FlexCare. It works fantastically, charges well, and the extra features of the USB travel case, and UV santiser, are just the icing on the cake. A fabulous product, and highly recommended.

I know that selecting a toothbrush should not be about appearance but it does strike me that this is the Bang and Olufsen of toothbrushes. Slim, understated, a shiny on/off button and an array of lights that would make an intriguing display in the dark. Imagine putting the best designer kettle of today next to something from fifteen years ago and you will get the impression. If you ever get caught with nothing else to look at but a toothbrush you would want to be looking at this toothbrush. Now, the experience. Clean, fresh, nice. I was far less tempted to press the brush against my teeth - as if I knew it was doing the work. When new to this type of toothbrush, you will probably experience a ticklish feeling as you brush, particularly on the inside of your mouth. It is also best to switch on and off when the toothbrush is in your mouth to avoid paste going everywhere. The handle feels comfortable in the hand and is well designed so that it is easy to reach the teeth at the back of the mouth (it is not too bulky).Three modes and three speed settings enables a degree of personalisation to taste and you can also use the easy-start feature to gradually acclimatise yourself to the experience over the first week of use. There is fast charging and a battery level indicator so that you will always know in advance when to recharge. To help ensure all teeth are given equal attention, the unit will alert with a change in sound when it is time to move to a different quadrant of your mouth. I found this a particularly helpful feature as I have a tendency (so my hygienist tells me) to concentrate too long in one area so the prompt reminds me to move on. The brush automatically switches off when the cycle is complete.Note that the brush incorporates a pressure sensor, which is pre-activated on arrival. This can be switched off but this is a very useful feature that I find best left on as it provides an audible prompt should you press too hard against the gums (another of my foibles apparently, which I am working on).Extras provided with this model are a hard travel case and a UV sanitiser for the brush heads.• Travel case: hard plastic with a strong clip. The brush is stored securely face down in a way that ensures there can be no accidental activation en-route. There is also space for two brush heads that clip in place although the travel charger has to be stored separately.• UV Sanitiser. I haven’t used one of these before but it is essentially a little unit that will hold two brush heads and should give them a thorough clean twice a day. Note that it is only suitable for use with Sonicare snap-on brush heads and specifically not the ones aimed at children. This is one of the best toothbrushes I have ever used and it includes all of the features that I have come to appreciate over successive brush incarnations – quadrant timer, pressure monitor and battery life indicator. The well-designed travel case and UV sanitiser are useful extras. The only thing missing from the pack is a second toothbrush head, so add a pack to your order if this is to be used by more than one person.

So Philips have released a toothbrush that comes with an app that ‘coaches’ you through brushing your teeth.I have been using Philips Sonicare toothbrushes for years now. After getting this new brush, using it for a couple of weeks and combined with using the app, I realise I’ve been doing it wrong all this time. Well okay maybe being a bit lazy. The toothbrush itself is one of the top of the range models with all the bells and whistles. It has various features such as:• East start – to slowly build up the power over 14 brushes. (I didn’t use this)• Pressure sensor – To tell you if you’re brushing too hard, this works without the app and can be turned off.• Speed monitor – Not sure of the official name but it tells you if you’re brushing too fast, this only works with the app.• BrushPacer – beeps to move to a new section of your mouth.• 3 brushing modes - clean, white and deep clean.• 3 intensity levelsThe app itself is has various features but the main point of it is that it will coach you through brushing your teeth. I was rather sceptical at first, how hard can it be to brush your teeth? I have to say this made a massive difference in the way I actually brush my teeth. It makes me brush them much more methodical, even when I don’t have my phone to hand. I have to admit I became quite lazy when brushing and not really concentrating on where I was brushing so the app has helped discipline me to brush my teeth better. Once you’re finished brushing the app may prompt you to go over areas it thinks you could have done better. I would just rest my phone on my bathroom shelf, rather than standing there holding it (mine is waterproof in case of any accidents though). The app has a few more features you’re able to set coats such as plaque removal, gum health, whitening and so on. You are also able to set a custom goal. The app allows you to set focus area where you can highlight areas of your mouth and tag it with bleeding gums, cavities and so on. Once you have finished brushing the app prompts you to say if you have flossed, used mouthwash and/or brushed your tongue. It will then display these in the my activities section off the app. The last main feature of the app I can think of is that it will know when you need to replace your brush head, you can buy your own and tell the app you’ve replaced it or subscribe to receive them in the post. I think it’s the adaptive clean head that comes in the box but it's ‘coming soon’ on the subscription page. It doesn’t limit you to subscribing from Philips, Amazon is in there too as well as others.Pros• It did make a difference to my brushing technique, my teeth now feel even cleaner.• App is easy to use• Missed spots feature is nice• Automatic head delivery• UV sanitiser is cool• The brush and head seem much better than my old Sonicare• Not as expensive as I thoughtCons• I did have a couple of issues where the handle would not connect• When I didn’t have my phone handy I would miss logging my brushes• The app is easy to use but I’m not 100% sure I’ll use it forever• Only one head in the box

I have tried a few electric toothbrushes and this Philips Sonicare is certainly one of the better ones. In the box you get everything in the first photo plus of course, the handle, the UV Cleaner and the main charging base as seen in the second photo. So total contents are as follows:• FlexCare Platinum Handle• AdaptiveClean brush head (with travel cap)• Main charger base• Travel charger• UV sanitiser• Travel case• DocumentationTo charge the toothbrush you merely sit it on one of the two supplied chargers, plug the charger into a wall socket via an adapter (both chargers have 2 pin shaver plugs) and wait (the green battery level indicator LED's flash whilst charging and go out when fully charged). The instruction sheet advises to charge for 24 hrs prior to first use and so far, after ten days, it does not need re-charging.The brush has three intensity levels as indicated by three green LED's midway up the handle - one LED being the lowest level and three being the highest. This brush is very much quieter than others that I have used, even on full intensity and the vibration is not as aggressive as with some so it is very comfortable to use, particularly with the "pimpled" grip on the handle which makes it easy to hold. The power On/Off button is conveniently placed and has a positive feel to it and the large "rocker switch" allows easy changing between the three intensities. A button near the base allows selection of the different modes of "Clean", "White" and "Deep Clean" (prior to switching on the brush). When cleaning your teeth the brush will alert you with a short beep when the cycle for each quarter of your mouth is completed, the duration of this will depend on the mode you have selected. As with most of these brushes, if you apply too much pressure whilst brushing you get a warning, with this brush it is a change in the vibration and you will hear a slight difference in the sound - so maybe not quite as good as those which have flashing lights or messages on separate devices via bluetooth etc.Where this brush really scores over others is with the UV Sanitiser. However, having read up a little on the subject, the claim of "removes up to 99 percent of bacteria" which can be true of hard, flat surfaces may be a little optimistic with irregular surfaces like a brush head (some sources suggest that 78% might be more accurate) but at least Philips do not attempt to claim that it "Sterilises" and it must still be a whole lot cleaner than just rinsing your brush under the tap and letting it stand! The unit itself is a neat little device which can hold two brush heads and has a safety mechanism incorporated into the door so that the light turns off immediately the door opens. A window in the door allows you to see that the unit is on by displaying a blue light and the cleaning process takes approx. ten minutes. The only downside that I see for this brush is the same as with each new electric toothbrush that comes onto the market, at present the cost of replacement brush heads is quite high but no doubt this will reduce with time.

For me the big difference with this toothbrush and other electric ones I have used in the past is the charge keep time. Have had another Philips whitening one that was also up to three weeks charge time. Not had it for three weeks as yet so can not say just how that really is true or not. Suppose it also depends on how many times a day you clean your teeth too. Also it has a handy travel case and compact sized charger, so yes this is one that will be going away with me too.Have always liked the Philips electric toothbrushes so to get this one with an extended charge keep time a bonus, along with the compact sized charger,as usually find it a bit big and bulky to take if travelling but with this one not an issue. The head of the brush is a nice shape and the brush itself not too heavy, just a nice shape. Suffer with OA in thumb and that so find an electric toothbrush is so much easier to use than a manual brush with hand issues. Now this brush seems to be the Rolls Royce of brushes, lots of various functions for deeper clean of gums, various areas it practically does all apart from get the toothpaste out of your tube for you. The main thing I wanted one for was making sure my teeth felt clean and got deep into the gum line like this seems to do. No problems with crowns or fillings or even sensitive teeth. The brush comes with various brush heads but for the price on full price would expect at least a free pack of replacement heads at the cost of it, if buying it. Think it worth keeping an eye out for offers on the replacement heads and buy them, otherwise they seem a bit expensive. Will update at a later stage to see how charge keeps and also how it goes with dentist visit too to get a proper dentist opinion on it. At the moment though can not fault it. This one is being used but kept well out of way of puppy, previous Philips one he took a like to and was relegated to the bin after being mistaken as a chew toy by him.The toothbrush came well boxed and sealed in a Philips box, so you could tell it had not been tampered with and that all it bits which should be there were. Instructions were clear and easy to read but then again just how hard it is to use an electric toothbrush if already used one, not that hard as basically much the sameness on most brands.UPDATE. Been away to Poland with this and the case is a good hard plastic one even survived the dreaded suitcase flinging about times. Plus no having to take the charger and no lose of power with it after a weeks use, so really a good one for taking away on holiday if like me you want to carry on using your usual toothbrush. Just take top, brush head off and place into case, little picture shows which way it goes in. Must admit so impressed with it, and no longer using just a freezer bag or other toiletry bag to contain toothbrush. Only downside it had to go into the main case so could not use it on trip, unlike a non electric toothbrush which you could just pop into your hand luggage.
