Philips Sonicare Flexcare Platinum Connected ToothbrushThe Philips Sonicare toothbrush looks very similar to your average electric toothbrush, it’s about the same size as my old toothbrush which was an Oral B Braun Professional Care. The body of the toothbrush has a nice weight to it and is genuinely comfortable in hand, it also feels good and solid. The design of the brush is quite plain, being all white with the only exception being the on/off button which is silver, but at the same time it has a quiet elegance about it and would look good in any bathroom. The major difference on first appearances is the number of buttons and lights, this quickly lets you know that this is not a standard toothbrush. But don’t be put off, all the buttons and lights can seem overwhelming but Philips have done a great job of making it as user friendly as possible, you can put that Gadget PhD down, you won’t be needing it.So what’s in the box?1 x Philips Sonicare Toothbrush Body1 x Brush head1 x Travel base charger with 2 Pin connector1 x Base charger with built-in UV sanitiser with 2 Pin connector1 x Travel case that will hold the body and 2 brush heads1 x Quick start guide1 x Instruction manualWhen you get your new toothbrush the first thing you need to do is charge it for at least 24 hours, this is stated in the quick-start guide. Once the toothbrush has been fully charged you are ready to go.The App & Connecting ToothbrushOnce I had fully charged the toothbrush I connected it to my phone via bluetooth, this is purely optional, but it is one of the key features of the phone. Please note that for bluetooth to work your device should be running bluetooth 4.0 or higher. Connecting the toothbrush to the phone was quite simple, I had no issues at all. You will need to download the Philips Sonicare App from the App Store or Google Play and install it on your phone/tablet/device. To connect the toothbrush, turn on the toothbrush by either pressing the on/off button or the Brushing Mode button, the lights on your toothbrush should be visible, *Make sure that the toothbrush is not on the charger when you do this*, while your toothbrush is on take your phone/tablet and open the Sonicare app, the app should then ask you to turn on bluetooth if bluetooth is not already on. Once your bluetooth is switched on then the toothbrush should automatically connect with your device and you are ready to go. Should your phone and toothbrush not connect then the app will let you know that it can’t find your toothbrush, if this is the case I recommend checking that the lights on the toothbrush are still on, I have had moments where the toothbrush has powered down before the app is fully up and running and therefore can’t see the toothbrush. The app itself is pretty straightforward and has a number of different functions available. The main one being that it monitors and tracks your brushing and allows you to touch up areas it thinks you may have missed and generally guide you on the best way to brush, (it will also tell you if you are scrubbing too much or applying too much pressure), you can also set goals for your brushing whether this be whitening, plaque removal or fresh breath. It also has a tools section, this area allows you to set specific problem areas that you may want to focus on, there is also the obligatory shop for purchasing. The biggest benefit of the app for me personally was that it coaches you in the best way to use your toothbrush, as this is the first Sonicare toothbrush I have owned I found this more than helpful. Please note that you do not have to use the app to brush your teeth, the toothbrush loses none of it’s functionality if the app is not connected, you just won’t get any of the feedback or help from the app. I used the app for about 2 weeks and I have used it on and off here and there but on the whole I don’t tend to use it very often. I found it really useful to get to grips with the toothbrush and how it should be used but ultimately I don’t want to have to take my phone into the bathroom all the time to clean my teeth. How much you use the app is going to be down to how useful you find it.The ToothbrushI had no problems switching to this from my Oral B Braun Professional Care, the one thing I will say is that the clean from the Sonicare is noticeably better than from my previous toothbrush, you only need to run your tongue over your teeth to feel that there is a difference and undoubtedly my mouth is a lot fresher. The toothbrush itself has four buttons on it and these are…On/Off buttonCleaning Mode button. Press to change cleaning mode, repeated pressing cycles through the options. Clean, White and Deep Clean.Intensity buttons. This is actually two buttons, like a volume rocker it is simply a + and -, press the “+” button to increase the intensity and press the “-” to decrease it.Whenever you turn the brush on, the lights on the brush will illuminate to show you the current settings and there are also three lights at the bottom which let you know the charge on the toothbrush. All in all it is very simple to use although first impressions may make it look more complicated than it actually is. In operation the brush is certainly powerful and you would be wise to keep your mouth closed during brushing, that is unless you fancy redecorating your bathroom with overtones of toothpaste. Despite the power in the brush I have had no issues with it irritating or it being uncomfortable, in fact I find the brushing motion to be a vast improvement over the Oral B, which would sometimes irritate my gums and as I’ve mentioned, the results are superior. The brush also has a BrushPacer this allocates 20 seconds to each section of your mouth, top-left, top-front, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-front and bottom-right, once 20 seconds has elapsed it will vibrate to let you know you’ve spent enough time in that section and at the end of the full 2 minutes the brush will automatically stop, letting you know your 2 minutes are up. Of course if you haven’t quite finished then pressing the on/off button will start the brush up again. There is also a Pressure Sensor built into the brush and if you apply too much pressure then you will also receive a little vibration and a slight change in tone to notify you of your brushing mistakes. If you are anything like me then you’ll probably end up being told-off more often than not by this brush, which is a weird experience in itself.BatteryI wouldn’t normally have a dedicated section for the battery, how boring is that? But in this case I feel I have to make an exception. The packaging states that you should get upto 2 weeks use from a full charge. I charged my toothbrush for the full 24 hours and I started using it on the 6th September, I was curious about the 2 week battery so decided that I would keep track and see how far it got on a full charge with normal daily use. The toothbrush eventually ran out of juice completely on the 27th September, even with my dodgy maths I make that to be 21 days of use, I don’t know about you, but I was impressed and can see that this would make an excellent travel toothbrush, especially when you remember that it comes with it’s own sturdy plastic travel case.UV SanitiserThe sanitiser is a nice idea and seems to work very well, again it is very simple to operate. Just pop your brush head into the chamber with the brushes pointing toward the center, where the UV light is situated, close the door and press the on button which is on top. You’ll see the blue light come on and it will remain on for 10 minutes and then turn itself off. Your brush head has now been sanitised. Again, it’s a nice thing but in all honesty I’m not sure how much use I will personally get out of it, but it’s there if it’s needed. All in all I am a big fan of this toothbrush, I think Philips have packed a fair amount of technology in here but at the same time they haven’t made the toothbrush overly complicated, or difficult to use. The results are excellent, my teeth are cleaner than ever and I have also found that some staining from my front teeth is being lifted, so they are definitely whiter too. I think the app is a “take it or leave it” situation, for some it will be invaluable, for others it will just get in the way, but either way it does have benefits and it’s nice to have the option. The UV sanitiser is good and appears to work exactly as it should, for some this will be overkill, but again for those who are hygiene conscious it is another tool for keeping your dental health in tip-top condition. There is no doubt that this is an expensive toothbrush and whether this is too expensive is something that only you can decide. Either way, I strongly recommend the Philips Sonicare Toothbrushes, your teeth will thank you and maybe your dentist too.

=== OVERALL ===This is the second top-of-the-range Philips sonic toothbrush I've reviewed (I've been using this model for the past few months Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Electric Toothbrush - Black) and I like this new one even better. These sonic toothbrushes really do provide superior cleaning. If you've decided you want a sonic toothbrush along with a UV sanitiser to help kill germs on your brush head, this is a great option (or the UV sanitiser can be bought separately, RRP £40). Please note, you'll also need to keep flossing (most dentists recommend this) and may need a manual toothbrush to get right to the back of the molars.=== PROS ===* Superior cleaning power (more than the Braun electric toothbrushes I've used for years, though they were far less expensive - this model's RRP is £225, though they tend to come down in price quite quickly after launch) (Update 29 October: The price has now halved to £112.49)* There are 9 cleaning options that are a doddle to select: simply select the standard 2 minute programme (Clean) or either of the enhanced ones (White, which gives an extra 30 seconds to polish your front teeth; or Deep clean, which runs for 3 minutes) then choose your intensity level (low, medium or high) then press go and you're off. You can change the intensity of the programme during brushing. Low is for gum massage, medium for everyday use, high for super power! You quickly get used to positioning your thumb so you don't turn the power off or change the intensity level. Ease of use is a real improvement over the DiamondClean. You can set the programme you want (I mostly use Clean at level 3), apply toothpaste then switch on.* The brush pauses momentarily every 30 seconds so you know to change where you're cleaning so you clean all 4 quadrants of your mouth (top inside and out, bottom inside and out). The brush also buzzes if you press to hard, which is a useful reminder.* Small, powerful motor in a sleek, elegant design.* Sonic toothbrushes give a more intense clean than regular toothbrushes and can feel a bit ticklish at first, so there's an option you can select to have the toothbrush power gradually increase over 14 days. I didn't bother with the 14 day option and got used to the ticklishness after a couple of days and now the toothbrush just feels normal to me.* Long battery life (3 weeks)* Travel case* The UV sanitiser is easy to use. After washing your brush head for 15 seconds then allowing to dry for 2 minutes, press the brush top onto one of the two pegs inside the unit with the bristles facing inwards, close the door, switch on and leave. The UV lights can be seen glowing as they sterilise the brush heads, then switches off automatically after 10 minutes. The inside of the unit reflects the UV rays to sanitise the entire brush top. You can leave the brush heads inside the unit to store. The brush heads don't look any different, but do smell sterile, like you're at the dentist.* Has a small rest on the back of the brush so you can place it flat down without it rocking (the DiamondClean doesn't).=== NIGGLES ===* This takes up more space than a regular electronic toothbrush because, in addition to the charger, there's also the UV sanitiser which is around 13m high x 12cm wide x 5 cm deep. If you have a small bathroom, the UV sanitiser may need to go somewhere else.* Comes with a 2-pin shaver plug so you'll need to use your shaver socket, or if you don't have one in the bathroom, buy an adaptor and use the sanitiser in another room.* I don't know if the rechargeable battery can be replaced when it wears out (as they eventually do) without damaging the toothbrush handle.* The travel case and charger are a bit plasticky (especially compared to fantastic high-tec one that comes with the DiamondClean), but I suppose that's what's been sacrificed in order to include the UV sanitiser in the price. The toothbrush itself is fantastic.* There's no explanation in the box or website as to what a UV sanitiser does or what need it meets; you'll have to look that up yourself. How dirty are our toothbrushes? How much of a problem is that given we've managed without UV sanitisers for thousands of years? How much cleaner does the UV sanitiser get toothbrushes and does that matter? How much UV is needed to get a toothbrush clean and how much does the Philips unit provide? How do we know when the UV bulb has worn out and needs to be replaced? There's a lot that has to simply be taken on trust with this product to ensure you're not simply adding a new 2 minute chore to your daily routine and adding another piece of kit to your bathroom shelf.* The toothbrush comes with only one brush head. Replacement brush heads are expensive (currently £25 for 4).UPDATE: I've now consulted a dental researcher who's provided some information about the most effective ways to kill the main bug that causes dental problems, Streptococcus mutans. In this study [...] a UV sanitiser was the least effective method of killing S. mutans; everything else tested killed more bugs, with garlic solution coming out top. A more practical solution than making your own garlic solution is to soak your toothbrush in something like Corsodyl (contains 0.2% CHX) or Dentyl (with CPC).

I already have the outgoing model/version of this excellent toothbrush (the Philips Sonicare HX9172/10 FlexCare Platinum Rechargeable Toothbrush with UV Sanitizer) so I was interested to see what improvements or upgrade they had made to it.In short (and having looked very closely between the two) there is no significant difference whatsoever (other than the original model features an additional mini brush head). In all other respects the models are identical - and I am genuinely puzzled about what the additional benefits of this latest model over the older one are. Having compared the two there is simply no justification I can think of to pay roughly twice as much for the newer model.Do not misunderstand me; this toothbrush is outstanding (and - unsurprisingly - feels identical in use).I gave the older model five stars and said the following about it (which equally applies to this one):"When I first bought my first electric toothbrush (probably over ten years ago) they, unlike today, weren't that common. That brush was a Philips Sonicare and it did an excellent job and lasted quite a few years until inevitably the battery gave out. Over the last couple of years I'd gone back to conventional brushing so I was interested to see how Philips have improved what was, in my opinion, an already excellent product. To begin with it is smaller and lighter with a slender head and slightly smaller brush-head. In operation it had the familiar feel I was used to i.e. a very intense though not uncomfortable buzzing against your teeth as you hold the brush gently against your teeth as you move it around section by section in 30 second intervals which are accompanied by a soft 'beep' (incidentally I would advise anyone new to this brush to skip the 'Easy-start' option as, honestly, even the highest setting is nothing to worry about comfort-wise).There are a small number of cleaning options i.e. gum health, 'white' or 'clean' (and three power levels for each). If you're like me you'll find one that suits and stick with that (in my case the 'white' option which seems to differentiate itself by not only being a longer cleaning programme but - am I mistaken here? - with a slightly more scouring action).Anyway, the results were predictably good. Even after first use you'll find your teeth feeling and looking smoother (squeaky clean in fact). But what you will notice (and which may well be the deciding factor if you decide to splash out on this not inexpensive product) is that after a week or two your teeth will indeed look noticeably whiter. Obviously the whitening action will not whiten past the point of what can be achieved through natural plaque removal (if you want to achieve that look then you'll be looking at proper cosmetic whitening treatments).A few other things to note:This comes with TWO chargers; one for travel and the main one with integrated UV sanitiser (the sanitiser is perhaps a superfluous feature for some but - having now used it - I'm inclined to use one in future). It also comes with a nicely designed brush-head travel case to carry the two brush-heads supplied (one standard and one small). So in conclusion a very nicely thought-out package that pretty much provides everything you need (except a two-pin shaver adapter which is essential - grr!). It cleans teeth excellently and even seems to surpass the results of the Sonicare I had previously. Replacement brushes - of which you'll need to get every few months - can be quite dear so you'll also have to factor that in should you consider buying one. But, that aside, I would have no hesitation in recommending anyone buying this toothbrush. Sure, if you feel you don't need the UV sanitser you can save yourself a few bob and get the same toothbrush model without it but, even with it, I think the whole package represents good value. Finally, having had dealings with Philips customer service (for an unrelated product) I can vouch for their after-sales service: it really is top-notch and a customer service model that other manufacturer's could well do with adopting. Recommended".All of the above applies to this new model (even down to the additional travel charger). However, again I would strongly advise people to consider buying the near-identical but cheaper model first (while they are still available that is).In conclusion this remains an outstanding toothbrush only denied 'the full five stars' because it is not significantly better than the 'outgoing' model to justify the high price.

Philips Sonicare HX9171/20 FlexCare Electric Toothbrush with Sanitiser - PlatinumI have been using rechargeable / electric toothbrushes for many years and tried both of the major players products. As time passes, they each upgrade, add features and versatility to gain the market lead but which one is best or most effective ?I asked my dentist - he said the Braun Oral B action was best, my hygienist said the same and was not too impressed when I asked about the Philips Sonicare....and yet although the action may be different, it is the Philips I pick up first. Being the "sonic" action is more user friendly and the handle is more ergonomic. Both the Philips and Braun do the same job and both are quality items so which is more effective ?I believe that both are good and that it comes down to personal preference. Both will be effective if used correctly and both are many times more effective than manual brushing. The new Philips Sonicare come with an upgraded handle, a redesigned brush head, a charger, a travel case and a UV sanitizer for brush heads.all covered by a two year warranty and an instruction book. For me, the only thing missing was a magnifying glass to read the instructions (and pet hate), whatever happened to black printing on white pages ? Why do they use pale grey, it makes it very difficult to read. The initial charge took over 24 hours but thereafter the handle runs, twice per day on a three minute setting for almost three weeks and would of course last longer on a two minute setting. The handle has a few more features than the last Philips I used and has a number of settings to suit most if not all users. Firstly you set the time between 2 mins in basic or "Clean" mode, 2 min 30 secs in "White" mode and 3 min in "Deep Clean" mode. Then set the "Intensity" of the action at LOW, MED or HIGH. these can be changed at any time to suit the user but not during the brushing process. Finally there are three small green lights to show the battery status. That selection is surely enough for everyone. I tend to leave it on one setting and not change it.In use there is an interval timer that signals the 30 second period allowing the user to work between the 4 sections (left and right, upper and lower. There is no need to apply pressure so there is a change in the motor noise if too much is applied and over a period this "teaches" the user how to operate. As I said earlier, the handle is comfortable to hold and the action user friendly. and it may suit new converts better.Philips have now added a UV Sanitizer. This is a smart piece of kit but is it really needed ? I have to admit never having given much thought to the cleanliness of the brush head. For so long now, rinsing under running water was the norm but was that enough ? Perhaps not. For just a 10 minute spell in the sanitizer I can be sure. I say sure but I really have no way of testing it but am happy to go along with what Philips say. It is an expensive way of adding a worthless gimmick so no reason to doubt it's inclusion in the package or it's use. They say it can be used after every brushing but equally can be used whenever the user chooses. I suspect the novelty will wear off and the frequency will fall. There is of course the question of how many chargers and cleaning units you can accommodate before it become unmanageable (toothbrushes and shavers). Finding room for another plug in device will challenge internal relations. The travel case is useful and quite robust. It however will not accommodate the sanitizer so that's for home use. It's a nice package and one I would be happy to recommend however I do worry about the true pricing structure. This started life at over £220 and like all other similar appliances is very quickly down to half price. Is this by design ????????????

This Philips Sonicare Flexcare Platinum toothbrush is the range topping 6 series complete with a travel charger, case and a UV brush sanitiser.Compared to last years model there have been some incremental updates and I have posted a couple of photos to see if anyone can spot the differences. There are differences if you look closely, especially the updated brush head, a brightly polished on/off button and the words ‘deep clean’ on the handle in place of ‘gum care’.Other than that it claims a 3 week battery, smart timer, travel case and pressure sensor and it appears the sonic technology movements per minute has increased if brush strokes and pulsations are added together. There is also a separate travel charger and of course the UV sanitiser.I have been using these toothbrushes for a number of years and even though I have tried other brands I have always come back to the Philips Sonicare range.I find the Sonicare range to be less bulky, tactile and pleasant to hold, yet light but robust and quieter where the vibrations are much less intrusive than other brands. There is also a two year warranty which I used a few years ago when a Sonicare toothbrush failed 3 weeks before the end of the warranty period. It was replaced by Amazon without any problems. There are three brushing modes and three intensity levels though I stick with one setting when I am using the toothbrush. I tend to press too hard when I brush my teeth so the pressure sensor is a real benefit to me.I rarely use the sanitiser except as a charger and I am sure it is effective, it is easy to use and easy to keep clean. The new brush head is interesting as the bristles are embedded in a flexible silicon bed. Firstly the bristles move and flex better and secondly the soft silicon prevents the brush head clacking against your teeth. I have added a photograph to show the difference though I’d like to see Philips adapt this to my preferred interdental brush heads. There is a minor downside to this new design and that is the increased cost of the new brush heads, however buying in bulk reduces the costs and makes them better value.Manufacturers also tend to include a teeth whitening mode on these kind of devices which I’d take with a pinch of salt. This is a very good toothbrush that does a very good job when it comes to cleaning teeth but it won’t suddenly change the colour of your teeth to Hollywood white. While the manufacturer claims a battery life good enough for three weeks, in real life use you will probably get between a week to two weeks between charges. it just depends on whether you follow the instructions to the letter or brush your teeth more frequently.A few years ago Philips packaged a soft travel case with this toothbrush which was next to useless and I think that they listened to their customers and produced a white hard case. That particular case did the job but just looked and felt cheap. The new case is a huge improvement, in looks and design, better quality plastics, a proper hinge and clip that keeps it closed. I have included a photograph for comparison. Expect it to pick up scratches. In conclusion I still think the Philips Sonicare Flexcare Platinum is a very good toothbrush and deserves a full five stars. It comes packaged with a number of extras notably a decent hard case, separate travel charger and UV sanitiser/charger base. The toothbrush can be purchased without the UV sanitiser and I think that probably offers better value unless you really have your heart set on it.The new soft silicon brush heads are a real improvement and it is a shame only one of them is packaged with this toothbrush. If you have last years model it is probably not worth an upgrade. All in all it will be hard to better this product, I just wish it were more affordable.

Before receiving this, I would have balked at spending around £150 for a toothbrush. However since using this the difference has been pretty close to the transition from a manual to an electric toothbrush.Using a traditional brushhead, the Sonicare Flex from the head looks old school and I perceived it to perform poorly. The handle looks extremely high quality, with a nice solid weigh, despite actually being lighter than my 3 year old Braun. Upon powering this on there is clearly a big difference in how the two brushes work. My Braun has a small brush head that is being rotated clockwise/anticlockwise very quickly to polish the surface of your teeth. When running under water, the water runs through and around the brush. With the Sonicare, the brush is vibrating so quickly, it looks like it's not even moving. However when running under water, all the water gets redirected as spray, indicating how powerful this brush is.There are a multitude of settings, which affecting the timing, and/or the pulse of the vibration rhythm for different effects. The default clean more should suit most people fine and includes a 2 minute timer which turns the brush off automatically within that period. The brush makes much better contact with the teeth on all sides compared to a Braun, and teeth come out at the end with that just out the dentist clean feeling, something the Braun hasn't done since probably the first 6 months of owning that. If even sounds a little like a dentist drill, which may or may not be a positive thing for you. For me it was an indicator of a quality motor.Upon the first few uses, my gums have actually bled a little despite flossing regularly and using the pressure correctly. The Sonicare makes it plainly obvious when you've applied too much pressure unlike the Braun, by changing the sound, and vibration feel when you're pressing too hard. I liked the fact that you didn't actually have to press too hard to trigger this. With my Braun you pretty much have to press so hard the bristles can't move to register a change in motor.I've read this brush should have a good 3 weeks charge, making it excellent as a brush to take on a medium length long distance trip abroad without having to take the charger. That said, the charger is a handy travel size and the brush comes with an excellent case, so I'll definitely be taking the whole package when travelling for longer than a short city break. One key thing to note about the head is that unlike my Braun, with a back of the brush head, water doesn't leak from the brush head into the handle unit. This is excellent, as those that own Brauns will know how the stainless steel connection on the brush handle can get grimy and even rust if you don't wash properly. For any water that does get in when pulling the head out to dry, it's easily wiped away.In all, the brush looks excellent, performs brilliantly to the point I could honestly recommend spending upwards £100 for a similar brush when needed in the future. In the same vein you can't go back to a manual toothbrush after using an electric, once you try a Sonicare, it's difficult to make a case for a Braun even at the cheaper price. After all, you get one good set of teeth, and you can't really put a price on that.Edit: So it's been just over a month since I wrote this review and the brush is still charged! The battery indicator is at one green dot but in terms of power, it feels close to how it did at full charge. Quite often Braun brushes feel much weaker when battery is 2-3 days from empty. Seriously impressed.

It is hard to really praise an expensive toothbrush, as to be fair not everyone can afford this, but the experience I have had with this brush is simply amazing. I am very aware of my teeth and personally think the overall experience delivered by this brush is worth it.Last year I discovered how much better the Philips brushes were than the Oral-B's I had used for years - the shape of the brush is much better and the softness reduces gum wear, but with this brush I can now say that I have had the ultimate brushing experience! This brush will not disappoint!Firstly, this brush feels good in the hand and there is a higher amount of play on the flexibility of the brush stem in the mouth. One charge with the compact charging stand seems to last (I haven't had it three weeks yet,but I have enjoyed using it so much that I have given it a lot of time and not had to charge it yet. Simply this has a higher quality battery and will go a lot longer between charges. In models that are price competitive a low cost battery is a must, but when you pay more you can have the best battery available. My existing Philips also has a travel case and I have found that very helpful in the past, I expect the same from this new brush & case.Secondly the control of this brush is greater than cheaper models. If you press hard on your gums with an electric toothbrush it can do a lot of harm to them quite quickly. Even when I used a manual brush, my dentist would regularly tell me off for 'over-brushing' and for simply pressing too hard. Now this brush will actually give you a vibrate signal to let you know that you are pressing to hard and the design of the brush will reduce the pressure you are putting on your gums. To clarify - the brush automatically reduces pressure, so that you don't damage your gums, but the brush also vibrates to tell you that you are pressing too hard - so, slowly it trains you not to apply too much pressure. Not only is this a good feature for me personally, but I am literally overwhelmed by the health of my gums with this new brush! The clean is controllable also to three levels and the deep clean feature is available for people who are prone to staining - heavy tea drinkers, smokers, etc. Basically the deep clean feature just takes 50% longer - 3 minutes instead of 2.The standard features are there too, such as a buzz every thirty seconds to tell you to move on to the next quadrant in your mouth, for a standard 2 minute clean. The unique selling point of this brush is without doubt its UV sanitiser! Simply take the head off the brush and put it into the sanitiser, (perhaps whilst putting your brush handle onto charge?) and the UV light will flood around the brush head killing 99% (allegedly) of germs. I have long maintained that your toothbrush must be one of the dirtiest things in your house, and now that will no longer be true! What does not go without saying is the great sense of cleansing that you get with all these Sonicare brushes - it is simply a better experience than from Oral-B or Colgate, not just because of the brush design, but because of the sense that they are functioning at a higher level - the vibration in your mouth is quite different it feels like the plaque is being shaken off.I cannot fully express how much I like this product or how convinced I am that this is a major step forward in toothbrush design. It certainly delivers a superior brushing experience and I thoroughly recommend this to you. It is expensive but it fully deserves 5 stars!

Have very happily used Sonicare electric toothbrushes for 4 years after my dentist strongly recommended I start using one to give my long suffering teeth a better long term future. This latest model is impressive in including not only three cleaning modes ( a normal 2 minute clean but also an extended deep clean and a whiten model or stain removal) but three intensity settings so you can adjust it to your preference. The adjustable intensity setting will also allow new users to get used to the Sonicare cleaning action by, if they so wish, increasing the power over time from an initial low setting. The cleaning process is improved by a pressure sensor that helps you avoid pressing too hard, very useful as the Sonicare really does not need anything other than a fairly gently application and slow movement. A cleaning timer also gives a quiet but forceful reminder every 3 seconds to move to another quadrant in your mouth.A compact hard travel case is included. This doesn't have room for the normal charger ( a small base without UV sanitizer) but a fully charged Sonicare should easily last even a long holiday and we have never had to take a charger on our travels. I leave the Sonicare on an overnight charge ( done via a shaving socket) to get a full recharge of the lithium ion battery. Being lithium ion, the battery shouldn't suffer from the life shortening memory effect of older types of rechargeable batteries. You can safely boost your Sonicare at any point without worrying about the impact on the longevity of its battery.Only one brush head supplied ( some older models used to give two) but replacements are widely available albeit are still on the expensive side, being the very latest design which currently costs circa £30 for a pack of 4 on Amazon. The Sonicare itself has a simple easy to use design that is comfortable to hold with a nicely sized on/off button and a small but easy to use selector for cleaning style. Three small lights indicate charge level and each of the three cleaning actions also has a small light indicating which has been selected. This model also has a separate UV sanitizer that can take two brush heads and bathes them in a satisfyingly blue UV light. For the ultimate in dental hygiene, it can only be a good thing to rid your cleaning heads of 'nasties' every so often although in practice we need to remind ourselves to do it. Very much a nice to have rather than an essential and you can buy the UV unit separately as a spare. As with all electric toothbrushes, it pays after use to remove the head to give a quick clean between the replaceable brush and the main unit as this will, avoid the build up of the water/toothpaste mix that wiill work its way into this gap. Good hygiene practice means this should be a normal task anyway but our experience ( we were a tad lazy when we first converted to electric toothbrushes and left the brush head on for extented periods.) was that a few seconds cleaning with each use pays dividends in long term use.In summary ,this Sonicare has a really impressive cleaning performance and is a definite improvement on earlier generations. You really can feel the difference in terms of plaque removal and the whiten mode with an appropriate toothpaste is also particularly effective. Sonicares are normally available on Amazon at significant discount to the normal rrp and assuming that you can obtain one at a reasonable price, this model is highly recommended.

I bought this sonic toothbrush because my existing Philips toothbrush suddenly died over Easter. £60 was too good a deal to miss! This toothbrush came well packaged, and was very easy to setup. However, the instructions were not the best and didn't go into enough detail about how to use the functions on the handset itself. Despite this it was easy to find the information on the Internet. It took quite a while for the handset to initially charge, by which I mean it took at least a day for me to be confident that it had fully charged. All the lights on the handset disappeared when it was fully charged so it was easy to see when this was the case. The toothbrush has three buttons. The top button is an on off switch. The middle button is a longer one and changes the intensity from levels 1 2 or 3. 3 is the highest level intensity and the levels are easy to see because there are three lights which come on. The small bottom button chooses the type of cleaning that you want. You can choose clean, white, and deep clean. The deep clean option runs longer than the other two. You do have to select your cleaning options before you switch your toothbrush on but the intensity can be altered during use. You should also wet it, and apply your toothpaste before you switch it on. Otherwise you will end up with a face full!My old sonic toothbrush was great, and did the job very nicely. However this toothbrush feels completely different. It is turbo charged, like a hurricane in my mouth! My old Philips toothbrush made the toothpaste frothy and bubbly. This one reduces the toothpaste to liquid. It's very strange. The pulse and motion pushes toothpaste through the gaps in your teeth ensuring a better clean. At least that is the theory. And it does feel like that's what it does, especially when the toothpaste ends up as liquid in your mouth. The 2 minute timer ensures the correct amount of time can be spent on each area of the teeth and the pressure sensor which comes already activated means that if you press too hard on your teeth the pulse changes and informs you to lighten up the pressure.Your teeth feel fantastically clean after, particularly if you have never used an electric toothbrush before and come to use it after only using a manual toothbrush. I was struck at how powerful the toothbrush feels when in use. It felt twice as powerful as my previous one. The only downside, and the reason I only gave it 4 stars and not 5, is that the charge doesn't last as long as my old toothbrush. In fact I'm a little disappointed about that part. My previous toothbrush would last well into the second or third week before requiring a charge. This requires charging sooner. This is partly because I do not stick to the 2 minute timer though and use it up to 3 or 4 times each time I clean my teeth. Still, it doesn't hold the charge as long.It also lost the star because it's really messy to use, the toothpaste liquid dribbles out of your mouth and sometimes down the handle. This is an amazing toothbrush, it does the job and the provided toothbrush head is comfortable to use and easy to snap-on and pull off. The replacement toothbrush heads are ridiculously expensive if you go for the same one that is provided but this is not necessary. All in all, I am thrilled with my purchase and just hope that this toothbrush lasts longer than my previous Philips one did!

SUMMARY* The Sonicare system beats the competition hands down in terms of ability to clean* This is a well designed and attractive toothbrush* This comprehensive kit gives you everything you might need, except for extra brush heads (order more now)* After receiving a test sample I purchased my own, and can recommend it as a good buy.I approached my test of this product with quite a bit of trepidation and fear of pain! For a long time I'd been successfully deterred from buying one of these because of the supposed claims by a competitor about the preference of dentists. So for years I'd been using Braun electric brushes, but had increasingly become disenchanted with them. Even my own dentist told me "Oh no,with your sensitive teeth a Sonicare will hurt - best avoid that!" Well folks, it's all tosh, because this is a really SUPERB brush and my sensitive teeth are not bothered in the slightest. In fact they're the cleanest they've been in years!I really do like the action of this brush. Instead of a wide, relatively slow sweep of the Braun, this brush moves the bristles a smaller distance but incredibly quickly. Ultrasonic cleaning is the same technology as used by your professional dental hygienist actually, so it's very effective - much more so in my experience than the slow scrubbing action of the Braun and others. With this brush you get lots of control options which are easy to set via the buttons and allow you to change both the cleaning program and intensity. As I said before, the cleaning performance of this brush is amazing - far better than any of the six or so other electric brushes I've owned.Design is excellent, and this is a good looking brush. I like the fact the handle is made entirely from hard plastic - the rubber coating on my last Braun went sticky after two years and I ended up throwing it away as a result, which was an annoying waste of my money. I really appreciate all the extras you get with this kit - two chargers and a travel case! Well done for looking after your customers Philips. The large charger has an integrated and automatic UV brush head sterilizer and the small charger base is very easy to pack in a suitcase. Having said that I've taken my brush away several times and it lasts for two weeks on a single charge!Cons? Only one brush head is supplied with the kit, so you'll need to order more now, especially for couples or family use. Brushes do seem to last a surprisingly long time though. And the Bluetooth thing. I don't like that aspect, so I don't use it. Yes, it might give you feedback on your phone but I'm intelligent enough to brush my teeth and I choose not to share all my contact data, emails, pictures and personal information with manufacturers thank you very much. As a list of cons goes, it's minimal, and both can be overcome entirely - purchase more brush heads and don't download the app. Sorted. Some reviewers have had reliability issues, but my unit has worked perfectly.CONCLUSIONHaving lived with the Sonicare and given it a long term test over a period of at least a year, I can honestly say that it surpasses anything else I've encountered to-date. It's a joy to own and use, has never let me down, and when I come to buy another brush - whenever that may be - it will definitely be a Sonicare. I've been converted.

As someone who found out that I have gum disease almost thirty years ago, the period since then has been a constant battle to keep my teeth. I found out was that I had one loose tooth at the front, and went to a dentist who having X rayed my mouth, showed me the dreadful truth, that below the surface the tooth root had been eroded to little more than a spike. I want to emphasise that I have never needed a filling and brushed my teeth regularly. The problems were all due to un-removed plaque. So I have an interest in removing plague and thirty years later, still have the loose tooth, but have kept the problem at bay by assiduous cleaning. That is why you need an electric tooth brush, plus ideally, other aids like tee pee interdental cleaners. (In my experience, flossing does not work very well). This brush is excellent offering truly fast speeds for vibrating the plaque off the gums and the gum line. It is the gum line you need to focus on and the inter dental spaces, as the modern toothpastes are so good that their frankly is little risk of decay unless you are soaking your mouth in sugar, which of course you might be.The brush head is great, really well shaped, and possible to get to the gum line and between the teeth with a prominent fore part of the brush. Incidentally, an examination of the head would seem to suggest that it vibrates really fast in a sweeping action (It is just a blur) The speed of the brush is really so fast, you only have to hear it to realize that you are getting a superior cleaning experience. There are three intensity levels and you know which one you are on as one little led lights up for level 1, two for level 2 and three for level 3. all easily set with a press of an up down button. in addition you can choose brushing modes, clean, white (2 minutes clean and thirty seconds to brighten and polish or deep clean, three minutes of alternating cleaning and massaging really look after the gums. Thus you have nine combinations. There is a pressure sensor which you can easily de-activate, though not while you are cleaning. You need to place it on the charger and press and hold the power on/off button and the mode button for 2 seconds. Nothing complicated.Like a lot of electric brushes, you have a quad pacer, just a pause/.stutter in the brushing cycle which lets you know to change to a different quarter of the jaw.And if you want a more gentle experience, activate the easy start button, (by placing on the charger and holding the power on/off button for 2 seconds. This will ease you automatically from a less powerful brushing to a more powerful one over 14 brushings. Then there is the sanitiser... which sanitises the brush head by UV radiation. For safety sake, this can only be activated when the door of the unit is closed and will stop if you open the door during the 10 minute UV cleaning cycle.A travel charger unit is provided for travelling, as is a case for the brush itself. It is not just the features, but try this brush and you will be extremely satisfied with its efficiency at cleaning your teeth, removing plaque and keeping dental bills low.in my opinion, is a very valuable contribution to dental health. Used twice a day, I believe it really will be a great aid in keeping your teeth into old age.

Please note, you're paying the premium, here, for the UV sanitizer. If that's not essential, you can get the brush on it's own at a far more wallet-friendly price here. The brush itself is fantastic. I've predominantly used Oral-B electric toothbrushes in the past (and in all likelihood still would if this hadn't been available on Vine). I'm very glad I found out the difference: this Philips Sonicare is light years more advanced than any other brush I've tried and I'll certainly be getting another when this one breaks down. When I first tried it, I was literally astonished at the quality. It both looks (finished in sleek, brushed chrome) and feels (a nice "just right" weight to it)like a serious piece of kit. The bristles are firm and elegantly wedged, the accompanying stand and travel case feel of very high and durable quality (as well as looking the part) and everything is very smoothly and smartly presented. It simply reeks of elegance and class...And then I switched in on! My god, it's like a lightsaber! ....... Okay, so it doesn't glow in the dark, but the power this gives out is way ahead of anything else I've used. You can basically switch between three modes (clean, whiten and deep clean) and each of these have three power/intensity levels. On the highest power/deep clean (which lasts 3 minutes, instead of the usual 2), it gives your teeth a humorously powerful and thorough clean, whereas on the everyday clean on a level one setting it is so smooth and silky it feels as though the bristles are almost glued to your teeth. (I've "never" enjoyed cleaning my teeth before, but this is actually a nice experience!)With the various modes and power settings, you've plenty of choices when it comes to a clean. For a night out (or morning after!) the whiten/deep clean mode is good. For everyday use, you can just use the standard clean mode. Whilst if you've neglected your brushing for a while and you've got a dental appointment next week you can hammer it with the deep clean, setting 3 the days before. Whereas the extra modes on most other brushes I've tried amounted to little more than gimmicks, these are genuinely useful and are very handy to have around. The UV sanitiser is very simple to operate. Simply take off the brush head and put it into the unit, pointing the bristles at the central light. Once the little door is closed, press the button on the top and it lights up. It then switches off automatically after 10 minutes... Whilst good to have around (and no doubt very useful--I've no way to test how effective it is), it's probably only something I'll bother to use when the brush is recharging.Overall, I'd highly recommend this for the brush alone. If cost is a problem (especially if they are at/close to the full RRP) then you will not be disappointed with the brush alone--it's by far the best I've ever tried. In the box:1 amazing toothbrush.1 x Philips HX9044/26 Sonicare Adaptive Clean Brush Head1 x UV Sanitiser/Charging dock.1 x Excellent and sturdy travel case.1 x Instructions(needs a standard 2 pin shaving adapter).

For me the big difference with this toothbrush and other electric ones I have used in the past is the charge keep time. Have had another Philips whitening one that was also up to three weeks charge time. Not had it for three weeks as yet so can not say just how that really is true or not. Suppose it also depends on how many times a day you clean your teeth too. Also it has a handy travel case and compact sized charger, so yes this is one that will be going away with me too.Have always liked the Philips electric toothbrushes so to get this one with an extended charge keep time a bonus, along with the compact sized charger,as usually find it a bit big and bulky to take if travelling but with this one not an issue. The head of the brush is a nice shape and the brush itself not too heavy, just a nice shape. Suffer with OA in thumb and that so find an electric toothbrush is so much easier to use than a manual brush with hand issues. Now this brush seems to be the Rolls Royce of brushes, lots of various functions for deeper clean of gums, various areas it practically does all apart from get the toothpaste out of your tube for you. The main thing I wanted one for was making sure my teeth felt clean and got deep into the gum line like this seems to do. No problems with crowns or fillings or even sensitive teeth. The brush comes with various brush heads but for the price on full price would expect at least a free pack of replacement heads at the cost of it, if buying it. Think it worth keeping an eye out for offers on the replacement heads and buy them, otherwise they seem a bit expensive. Will update at a later stage to see how charge keeps and also how it goes with dentist visit too to get a proper dentist opinion on it. At the moment though can not fault it. This one is being used but kept well out of way of puppy, previous Philips one he took a like to and was relegated to the bin after being mistaken as a chew toy by him.The toothbrush came well boxed and sealed in a Philips box, so you could tell it had not been tampered with and that all it bits which should be there were. Instructions were clear and easy to read but then again just how hard it is to use an electric toothbrush if already used one, not that hard as basically much the sameness on most brands.UPDATE. Been away to Poland with this and the case is a good hard plastic one even survived the dreaded suitcase flinging about times. Plus no having to take the charger and no lose of power with it after a weeks use, so really a good one for taking away on holiday if like me you want to carry on using your usual toothbrush. Just take top, brush head off and place into case, little picture shows which way it goes in. Must admit so impressed with it, and no longer using just a freezer bag or other toiletry bag to contain toothbrush. Only downside it had to go into the main case so could not use it on trip, unlike a non electric toothbrush which you could just pop into your hand luggage.

I've been using this toothbrush for a month now and am duly impressed. It has a total of 9 different settings, including normal, whitening and deep clean, so it's easy to find a level that suits. The battery does indeed hold its charge for weeks - I only had to recharge it for the first time a few days ago, and that was based on the not quite full charge that it arrived with. A thing I like about it is that it has three indicator lights for charge, so you know roughly how long you have left - great if you're going away for a few days or a longer holiday. It's a nice weight in the hand and thick enough to be stable when standing upright. The controls are well placed so that you're not constantly switching it off or changing the settings mid-brush - a problem I've encountered with some other brushes. The brush is the more traditional toothbrush shape rather than round - personally I prefer round heads, but this one is small and neat enough to get into those awkward places. When I received this it was priced at approximately £200 though at date of writing I note it's now £106. So the question is - is the performance good enough to justify the high price? It claims to be 'the perfect toothbrush for those concerned with good gum health' - as someone who has had gum problems for the last few years, I would be prepared to pay a premium price if it made a real difference to that. Of course, I won't be sure till I've used it much longer, but so far I'm delighted to say that I haven't had any swelling or pain in my gums after about the first week of use. This is a short period admittedly (we're required by the Vine programme to review within 30 days), but it's been a while since I went as long as that without at least a minor problem. I also notice that my mouth stays fresh for significantly longer between brushing, which suggests to me (though I have no proof) that it is indeed cleaning more deeply below the gum than previous toothbrushes. For this alone, I would have happily paid the full price, and would guess that if it works that well on someone with existing gum problems, it may well also help to prevent them from developing in currently healthy mouths. It also claims it removes 10 x more plaque than a manual toothbrush. I've been using electric toothbrushes for years, so can't really judge that. But I did take note of a couple of areas where plaque was beginning to show - so far, the results are inconclusive. The plaque is still there, but I think may have reduced a little - certainly no worse.I will continue to monitor both plaque and gums and edit this review in a few months time to advise of the longterm efficacy. But meantime I heartily endorse this toothbrush, despite the hefty price tag. And if you too have gum problems, may I also recommend Colgate Total Pro - Gum Health toothpaste - between it and this brush, my mouth feels better than it has in years.

After emptying the contents of the box and setting it to charge for 24 hours I set to reading the instructions and downloading the app. The instructions are straightforward, there’s 3 settings, cleanse, white and deep clean, a battery charge light and a simple on/off switch. Downloading the app was easy by following the step by step instructions on the screen and now that’s done I just flip to the app in the morning/evening, then turn my brush on and it’s found it immediately.I prefer to use the cleanse mode and this lasts for 2 minutes before the brush turns itself off. The app brings up an image of some teeth split into 6 sections. As you clean each area of your teeth and gums the app highlights where you’ve brushed,It also flashes up to warn you if you’re using too much pressure or if you’re scrubbing too much. After the allocated time on each section the app shows how well each area of your teeth have been cleaned. After the two minutes have finished, if you’ve missed certain areas, the app gives you a few seconds to decide if you want to continue brushing. If you do it highlights the areas which need to be redone, you turn the brush on again and continue as before. The brush itself also makes an audible beep when it’s time to move to the next section of your teeth so, if you forget to take your phone to the bathroom, it’s still possible to use the brush you just won’t get any of the feedback!I have to say that this brush cleans my teeth as well as when I have them cleaned at the dentists. I have started getting a small stain on one of my front teeth and it was really starting to bother me, every six months when I visit the dentist they get it off for me but then slowly it re-appears, this brush works at keeping it from returning which is great. The toothbrush itself is a similar size to most of the electric toothbrushes out there and I find it easy to handle in terms of weight, manoeuvrability etc. The battery life is amazing, it lasts about 3 weeks without a charge so you can take it on holiday and not worry about remembering the charger but, for longer trips, the charger is very compact and it comes with a nice carry case. There’s also a UV sanitiser, this isn’t to be used instead of the usual rinse under the tap, it’s provided as an extra deep clean facility. It’s easy to slot your brush head in and switch on, it takes about 10 minutes to run the cycle and then your brush is ready to use again. I personally think this is a bit of a gimmick and don’t think I’ll find myself using it very often but it’s there if you want it.Overall it’s stylish, effective and has some nice features but is one of the most expensive toothbrushes on the market at the moment. I personally don’t think there’s a price you can put on good dental care and would definitely recommend buying one despite the cost.
