There is no doubt that this is a very clever device, designed specifically to cater to the DIY hair cutter, a community with which I am happy to identify now that short hair, and therefore frequent trims, have become the order of the day. (Long at the side and practically non-existent on top is not a look I choose to go for!)It can cut hair to anything from practically a shave to 15mm long. It does it in 2mm increments from 3mm to 15mm, 0.5mm increments from 1mm to 3mm, and you can take the clipper guard off altogether for the 0mm effect, although I haven't tried it that close, and don't intend to do so! It doesn't use conventional clipper heads - #1, #2 etc - there's a rotating bezel that does the adjusting, although there are two separate fittings, one for lengths of 1mm to 3mm, the other for longer ones. Moreover, the clipper head itself rotates through 180 degrees; more specifically, it rotates to 90 degrees either side of the "straight ahead" position, which does make it easier to hold than holding a conventional clipper, or to 45 degrees off centre, which I haven't actually tried out but which might suit some people. That having been said, I've managed with a conventional clipper, and one with an electric cable, moreover, and it didn't prove too difficult even when "DIY" clipping. This device is chargeable, so it is definitely easier on that count. It's also water washable, apparently, so you can clean it out easily, although you do have to re-oil it.That having been said, it has a couple of limitations, at least as far as I am concerned. For a start, 15mm, the maximum length setting, is rather less than the #5 setting I would usually have used for the top of my head. Also, the one thing that it can't replicate is the side taper clipper head, so getting a good taper over your ears is a little tricky. I wonder whether the 180 degree rotation, combined with more conventional clipper heads, would not have been a more practical solution, albeit less innovative. I also wonder how long the hard, clear plastic fittings to change the cutting length will last - they look rather brittle. The guidance contained in the box - a tiny 12 page booklet, relying on diagrams only - was completely inadequate. There is however a very much more comprehensive manual available on line, via the Philips website, although nothing specifically refers to this in the pack. I was also a little disappointed that there is no carry case, so you'll have to keep it in its cardboard box. It appears, however, that there is a "big brother" - the QC5580 - to this particular model which adds and electric shaver fitting to this one's repertoire, and does also have a carry case - or bag - of some sort. This device will probably be most useful to someone who wants to keep their hair quite short - equivalent to #1 through #3 clipper heads, who wants to do so quite frequently, and who doesn't want to clip the hair above the ears any shorter than the rest. I will certainly use it, but I shall have to retain my more conventional clippers as well, I think, to trim top of skull and over the ears.

If you're like me and want short hair without the fuss then this is ideal! With it's rotating hand grip, and rechargeable battery it's great for a quick trim - short back and sides and that sort of thing. Don't get me wrong, it's not a replacement for a good trip to the Barbers, but with practice, it can ALMOST be as good. I tend to have a 3 cuts with the Clippers to 1 Barbers cut ratio, just to make sure my hair is blended and thinned out on top as it gets quite thick. At £30 that means it's paid for itself in the cost (or savings as it stands) of 3 haircuts 3 weeks apart. Not a bad return really. The picture shown is my most recent effort with the Hair Clippers but do bear in mind I've had about a years use AND PRACTICE with the Clippers,so I am perfecting my cutting style over time. I use 2 mirrors, to see the side and back of my head, and take about 30-40 minutes each time. The rotating hand grip is great, especially when I trim the LHS of my head, as, being right handed, I struggle with precision in that area. My best advice (what works for me in other words) is to use a long blade guard, say 11-13mm about an inch or so above the ear and go right around my head. Then work downwards round my head adjusting the blade lengths shorter as I go lower, 11-13mm, 9-11mm, 7-9mm, 5-7mm, 3-5mm,etc. This minimises any Do It Yourself Clipper disasters, as it's unlikely you'll create a wedge if you follow this method correctly, and any errors will be no worse than some of the awful cuts I've had AND paid for! Battery life is excellent, and I've not had any guard breakage, as mentioned in other reviews. It did come with some oil for the blades, but the instructions say the blades are self-sharpening and I haven't felt the need to use the oil (yet)? If you just TAKE YOUR TIME and don't attack your hair like Sweeney Todd the first couple of times, your confidence in cutting and your style will be fine! If I can do it, any bloke can! Just check out the photo! 5* Clippers from a well respected (by me) brand.Update: 27th June 2020 - I'm aware that many folk will be looking for good quality hair clippers especially with the Covid-19 lockdown. I've included a 2nd photo (using a mirror) to try and show how my haircut looks at the back. I've now decided to cut out the Barbers altogether when lockdown is finally over and go solo with respect to cutting my hair. I just wanted to demonstrate that it was possible to replace those costly haircuts and put yourself in control, and show that my clippers are still going strong - every 7-10 days in fact!

Never pay for a haircut again, chaps. I have been cutting my own hair using only Philips clippers since 2011 and I highly recommend it (I've saved a fortune too). Philips keep on impressing me with affordable, quality clippers. THESE ones are an improved version of previous 180 degree models. These clippers have a pleasant rubber grip with a chrome 'egg shaped head'. Essentially, the design is ideal as it fits nicely in the hand. The length setting is nowhere near the hand and cannot be accidentally adjusted. They also come with 2 comb heads for normal hair and one for very short. Now, 180 degree clippers are absolutely great for back and sides but not essential. You can also get a good cut with a normal flat (non rotating head) but for those just starting out - this is the IDEAL way to learn and built confidence. (comment below if you have any questions)Although these don't come with a small mirror (my previous philips ones had a great little round mirror with an elastic hand grip) don't worry, just go get one. Many people worry about cutting too much or making a mistake. Well, Philips have it covered. The length adjustment is via a rotating wheel that canno't be accidentally moved. The blades are one of the key assets here. They are 'self sharpening'. Many brands, including a well known barber shop staple, (begins with W) often have reviews that say the blades start to pull and it hurts, due to the sharpness diminishing. My previous philips 180 have not lost sharpness and I've been cutting every 3 weeks since early 2011.After charging these, (they come with some charge but for the long life of the battery, it's best to charge them properly first) you set the length by turning a rotating wheel that is cleverly out of the way. Could not be easier. The rotating wheel is robust and much better way to ensure no slippage - unlike other designs that have a up/down lever that can be prone to slippage. At first you might make some errors when cutting your own hair - this is not related to the product but a general issue. A common occurrence I notice from online forums is that people think that nothing is happening so they lower the length until suddenly they have no hair left! Just remember that you can always cut more off but can't add hair...to quote the oldest, naff-est cliché!The blades are easy to remove and wash under running water. You can remove all the parts and brush away debris. If you want some home hair cutting questions answered, reply below.

This is my first ever hair clipper to be used for my first attempts at cutting my own hair...The clipper comes with a 3-15mm comb that is in normal terms Grades 1 - 5. For someone like me who's used to having their hair cut at Grade 8 on top - this is quite a bit shorter! However, times are hard and spending £10 every 3 weeks in a hair cut just isn't viable so thought I'd give these a try...Firstly, you charge for as long as you need - up to a maximum of 60 mins (a full charge takes 60 mins, and the clipper runs for 60 mins. Fantastic work here Philips, I don't really intend to plan when to cut my hair - so knowing I can just pop it on charge for 30 mins and then cut is great! There's a little LED that glows white whilst charging, stays white when charged (and note, glows orange when batteries are low whilst in use)I've just used the clipper for the first time, here's my first impression...Very light, and very easy to select Grades (they're in mm on the comb) by rotating the head. Plastic comb feels sturdy and doesn't seem to flex. If you've never used a hair clipper before, I highly recommend using the highest grade all ver your head and then going down in increments - you can always cut more, but it can't be put back! The 180 degree rotating blades is a great idea, *HOWEVER*, please please make sure you check the cutting size once turned or whenever you've turned the head as I did manage to a couple of times alter the cutting length (I did double check each time whilst moving the head so managed to save myself from the dreaded full clipper shave!)As others have noted, this is a fantastic clipper for anyone who has a single length cut all over. However, I prefer to have something a little longer on top and shorter on the back and sides. I ended up using the 11mm over the top (just over Grade 3) and the 7mm on the back and sides (just over Grade 2). Not very difficult to blend in, I tend to hold my free hand in a straight line on the back of my head and clip up and lift the blades in a straight line - seemed to work alright! However, I can see that this would become very difficult say if you were doing a 0 on the back and sides and a 15mm on top - a 7 and a 11 isn't that noticeable of a difference!Overall, fantastic clipper, nothing extra I wish it had (except maybe a case). Works perfectly, even on thick hair - just munches straight through! If you're thinking about buying.. DO IT! It'll save you so much money!

My old Remington clippers sadly passed away. They were loyal and had been in the family for some years. They needed replacing.I opted for this model cos I liked the reviews and I didn't want to spend more than £30.On the positive side, they feel good in the hand and they feel great when they're doing your hair. My old Remington could sometimes hurt when using but this item has really soft, flexible heads that feel great. It holds a lot of charge and is quick to charge up too.On the negative side, the instructions that come with them are very poor - no words just a few diagrams. Really?? And also, when using for the first time I misread the dial that tells you how long/short the blade will cut and I ended up with a shorter cut than I've ever had before. Not a problem for me but it could be for some people!! Also, when holding this item it seems like it would be easy to move the gauge that determines the length of the cut so you could be doing your hair, or worse someone else's, and part way through move the gauge and now you're cutting their hair shorter than you/they want. This hasn't happened to me but it feels like it could easily happen is all I'm saying. And most disturbing of all, the unit can be rinsed under the tap to clean it and remove the hair from it. This is a great feature but when I was holding the unit after I noticed water dripping from the bottom of it - where you plug it in to charge!! Now I can't remember much about my school science lessons but I'm pretty sure that water and electricity aren't supposed to come into contact with each other!! This bothers me. I'm still alive and able to write this review but this feature, as good as it is, concerns me.Another negative is that there is no tapering head for doing around the ears for example. It seems like I've concentrated on the negative stuff but I think people need to be aware of them is all. On the whole I really like the item and it did a great job of my hair, even if it was shorter than I would have normally done!!So far, I'm very happy with them and if I have any issues I'll report back. But they do need clearer instructions though!!!!

For the second time of reviewing (my first attempt disappeared I think Amazon ate it!)Over the last 11 or 12 years I have been cutting my own hair (or what remains of it nowadays) and have had a variety of different, and variously priced electric hair clippers which have all done pretty much a decent job.I have certainly never had a hair clipper as expensive as this one so I was really looking forward to my first cut with it.Firstly I have to say that the packaging is pretty good ie. no armoured blister packs (well done Philips)The manual is sufficient to get you started and keep you running. Everything you need is in the pack......Hold on! doesn't the product page say that the box contains a pouch?no pouch in the set I got!Otherwise a very complete set with two sets of length combs,I never use them so all I can say is that they seem robust enough, a container of oil and the charging lead. How brilliant that this cutter only needs one hours charging for one hours use?....superb! It can also be used either with or without the cord, the cutter is a little shorter than my previous machines but I found it very easily and comfortably fitted the hand.It certainly did a very good job of cutting my hair and seemed a little faster than previous cutters I have used too. The rotating blade (which I thought was just a marketing ploy) was really useful, particularly when cutting my neck hairs! So a swift cut and I then asked my wifes opinion and apart from two little patches that I had missed, which is par for the course, it had given me a really good haircut. All done then?....No not really! Although there is a cleaning brush supplied, this piece of kit is washable...a big plus in my book, just rinse it under the tap, give it a quick dry and put it away till next time...simples!Right here's the biggy, is it worth £60 of your hard earned money? My honest opinion depends on one thing....if it lasts 5 years then it is well worth this amount, as I must have spent this much on different hair clippers over that period of time. Frankly I see no reason why it shouldn't last that long as it seem to be very robustly made.

For the last 10 years or so after being dealt the blow of a receding hair line and after refusing to pay the increasing barbers charges. I decided that I would buy my own and get the wife to shave my head.Since that decision I have gone through more clippers than I care to mention. I have tried mains, cordless, self oiling and traditional from various manufactures such as Wahl, BaByliss and Remmington. Some have worked better than others but most in the end have died of death.I have always fancied a set of diy clippers, as the wife accommodating as she is, sometimes is not available or working away on business etc when I need a trim.Although I've been put off by mixed reviews from people saying they don't work very well.I decided to have a punt on these Philips Clippers. They are a good brand and I have not been disappointed by their products in the past. They arrived the other week and I was desperate to have a shot. My wife was away for the Weekend and my hair was in need of a cut so I took the plunge and attempted to do it myself. With great trepidation I placed the comb on my hair and started the cut. I was at the point of no return!I am pleased to say that I could not have been happier for my first attempt. A good even cut all over apart from one small hard to reach area on the back of my head! Which my wife trimmed on her return.I am sure after a few more goes I will master it and no longer need her help. The unit itself is very well made and I like the idea of only two combs and the adjustable settings on the appliance itself. The 180 Degree aspect also works a treat ideal for the neck and over the ears.It comes with a charging unit that takes 60mins to charge fully, a hair brush to remove hair from the cutters and some blade oil. It is also fully washable for easy cleaning and another point, if the clippers are not charged you can use the charging cable to turn the appliance into a corded unit.It would have been nice if it came with a grooming bag to keep everything together but that's a minor gripe.Overall I can recommend these clippers 100%.

I decided to buy this based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews posted thus far, and am very satisfied that I made the correct choice.I've been clipping my hair for around four years and during the time have been using a Wahl Clip N Rinse. Due to its waterproofness I was content to put up with the reliability issues I encountered - I had to replace the blade probably twice a year and the whole thing once a year. However after buying my last one just four months ago, it already cuts unevenly, pulls hair and fails to hold an eight-hour charge past just one 10 minute clipping session. Rather than spend yet more money on the Wahl I decided to spend a little more on this and am very pleased Idid. The Philips gives a superior cut to the Wahl in every way - much more even and no snagging or pulling of hairs. It felt better from the very first use. Although I have to hold it at quite a specific angle to cut properly due to the somewhat odd shape - I seem to have to hold it against my scalp rather than run it through my hair - the fact that you can turn the head 180 degrees (which seemed like a gimmick before, frankly) means that you are able to get to the harder-to-reach areas much more easily. It is much quieter than the Wahl, and more comfortable to hold, which makes it more pleasant to use. It is just as waterproof as the Wahl so you can take it in the shower with you, do your hair, wash the clippers under the shower and shower immediately afterwards as I do.I haven't had it long enough to comment on any reliability issues, but the fact that it charges fully in one hour and is able to do several cuts before recharging would suggest it's made of sterner stuff than the Wahl.Overall, it comes highly recommended, and for the current amazon price of £30 it's a bargain. I only wish I'd gotten it sooner and not wasted the money on renewing the Wahl annually. If you are a regular cutter of your own hair like me (weekly) then don't hesitate to get this.

This is the best set of clippers I've ever owned. I've always struggled with my personal grooming, and for years have been mostly paying to have my hair cut and my beard trimmed at a smelly, smoke-filled barber's, surrounded by rude, sweaty men talking about sports, and shagging, and cars, and shagging, and sports, and more shagging. I hate it. And for years I've wished that I could simply do it myself in the comfort and tranquillity of my own home, to avoid the whole miserable barber's shop experience. But I'm not skilled at grooming, and no clippers have ever done the job - until now.Suddenly I can give myself a really good, non-embarrassing haircut and beard-trim, with minimal effort, and a seemingly inexhaustible battery. (On a single charge, over the course of four months, I've cut my hair and trimmed my beard eight times, and the battery is still showing no signs of running down). The clippers are comfortable to hold at any angle, and the revolving head is a genius feature that allows you to move the clippers across your scalp in the same way that a barber would from behind, but without dislocating your shoulder! And the length of comb is adjustable by turning a knob, rather than having to faff around with dozens of different sized combs - which get messy (and lost). Here it's all just one comb (plus another for specific jobs) that moves nearer or further from the blades. Another genius piece of design. But best of all, you can wash the whole thing under the tap, so it's easy to keep clean, and it requires no maintenance at all (although some oil is provided if you choose to use it).Overall, this is a perfect piece of design and engineering; sturdy, well-built, waterproof, reliable, user-friendly, ergonomic, and surprisingly fun to use. For the first time in my life I don't dread getting a haircut. In fact, I consider it one of the more enjoyable of life's chores. Highly recommended.

I was very impressed with the new Philips QC5570 hair clipper. The clipper works from a rechargeable battery or mains and since the mains cable was of an acceptable length this was the option I chose. Clipped hair length is between 0.5mm to 15mm and selection is made by using one of the two plastic trim guides and then turning the selector dial on the clippers to move the plastic trim guide up and down. As the metal teeth are rounded to avoid skin irritation while clipping, I decided to see if I could create a mohawk hairstyle. Using the clippers without either plastic trim guide, I successfully managed to cut the right side of my scalp with no problem at all (I used a piece of cardboard bent over my head to ensure a straight line!).By rotating the head of the clippers 90 degrees I was able to use my left hand to successfully cut the left side of my scalp, leaving a perfect mohawk down the centre of my scalp. I tidied the mohawk up by going over the hair with the clipper using the larger plastic trim guide attached. The result was amazing and I received quite a few comments from people who were equally amazed when I explained I cut my own hair using the new Philips 180 Degree Hair Clipper. Without a doubt, the clipper will soon pay for itself when I save money from not visiting the barbers. The clipper also comes with a small plastic bottle of oil, to ensure freedom of movement of the self-sharpening blade, a double ended brush for clearing off clippings, and a very basic manual which, to be honest, I didn't find useful at all. The one drawback is that there is no bag to keep the clipper and accessories safe so it has to go back in the box after every use - however, the QC5580 model DOES include a bag AND the facility to cut bald!Yet another great product from Philips.

Philips QC5570 Headgroom plusPhilips on their packaging label this as a "Do it yourself balder"Once upon a time very short hair (and the use of an electric trimmer to achieve it ) was the province of American GI draftees heading to Vietnam - times have changedOverview - This is an interesting concept but is it only useful for those wanting short , not layered hair? There are some 13 length settings from 0.1mm ( dusty light bulb) to 1.5cm ( Sonic the hedgehogs younger cousin) - I am not a personal fan of ultrashort hair ( some of us try to hang onto what we have still got).Dislikes/weaknesses in current offering as deliveredNo pouch for components - this is available with the QC5580 unit BUTalso is shown in the downloaded manual for QC5570No stand for chargingCharging cable didn't readily insert / lock inPoor included manual - the download is better but shows a pouch as being part of the kitIs it useful for anyone seeking other than a dusty lightbulb look ( self groom) . How good is it if used by a 2nd party? What is good -There is a light to show when charging or charged completed - fairly rapid charge and up to 60 minutes use on one charge. The 2 year warranty does register OK via [...]Does have a cleaner brush and lubricant is included - must be applied before first useIt is light and easy to useWe eventually found out that it works well whether you do it yourself or use it as a trimmer for a conventional haircut. Getting the hang of using the rotating head takes practiceIf you like the shorter cut then with this unit you can save megabucks in hairdresser fees ( unless like me you have friend / neighbour who kindly does mine )Haven't tried any competitor products so cannot comment on the comparative performance / price.Rate it as 4*

'Who on earth would want to hack off their own hair?' - you may ask. Yet many people do, despite the risk of ending-up looking like a badly-plucked turkey. Of course with this hi-tech hair clipper from Philips I'm not talking about the old basis around the head cut, but precision trimming.'But', the doubters will persist, 'is it really worth it just to save a few bob?' Well, given that it can easily cost up to a tenner for the removal of a scant few bristles, I would contend that it definitely CAN be worth it. Of course there are many trimmers on the market that are intended to be brandished by your lady, or a friend, or in the case of the most basic of these - a pair of scissors - a VERY GOOD friend, not many have been designed for actual self-use. However, the Philips design boffins have now come up with this tool - styled as a 'DIY Easy Reach 180 Degree Hair Clipper', a title that must have had their marketing boys tossing in their sleep. If features a trimming head projecting from the main body like some technological growth and offers, among other things, 15 lock-in length settings, together with rounded edges on combs and cutters to prevent the user from giving himself a nasty nip.I've tried it a couple of times - purely in the interests of scientific research, of course - and it delivers on its promises: you CAN use it on yourself fairly easily and you DO feel in control. So from those viewpoints alone it is worth it if you're going to use it on a regular basis - hence the four stars. However the eye-watering price would personally make me baulk, but as I'm now growing my hair long (I'm a bit of a middle-age hippy, but only in the sense that I love prog rock!) and I'll probably not use it again for quite a while.

The Phillips QC5570/13 DIY hair clippers are designed for using if you cut your own hair although I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. Although this model has been specifically designed for this it is nonetheless a difficult task to do without the use of multiple arms and mirrors. The 180° rotating head is helpful in achieving this if nonetheless it is still a difficult task on your own. However if you are lucky enough to have somebody who will cut your hair for you this is a very useful pair of clippers that make it extremely easy to have a quick trim without much difficulty. The clippers are cordless which makes use extremely easy as a cord can often be very annoying. One thing you will notice when cutting is the ease at which the blades cut. The Philips clippers promise self sharpening stainless steel blades which stay sharp longer. The clippers come with two different combs, both of which can be adjusted to several different heights. I found that these heights covered most of the styles that many men will be after, however even at its fullest height it's still cuts quite a lot off, there doesn't seem to be an option for just a very short trim.Another difficulty I found is the charging cord which fits into the bottom of the clippers. The cord does not fit securely and will often come out even at the slightest knock, it means you have to place the clippers securely on the ground when charging. Also the instruction manual given with the clippers is not at all helpful and does not inform you how to adjust the lengths of the combs, or how to use the device in general. However that being said I have found these clippers to work very well and they offer a very comfortable cut.

We normally use a power-drive Wahl mains clipper - because they are the industry standard.I wanted to try a lighter unit that I could use myself, I like a close cropped hair length in the hot summer.Firstly, I took off the standard plastic length guide and added the short one. A simple push pull effect I found out by experimentation because the instructional pictures are tiny and pretty poor quality - totally useless in fact. All that wasted whitespace on the page too! Enlarge the images chaps! In use the device is light and easy to push around ones head, my daughter watched as I did it; unfortunately as I can't see the top of my head, I did leave track marks, which needs a further going over. This means tiny bits of hair everywhere and they do itch. The Wahl cuts through my thick hair easily in one stoke. Hair was 4 cm long this time and thick. We tried the Phillips on this long hair and it did cut through without tearing or painful pulling. (Unlike the rubbish BaByliss unit which hurt me and was only a 20 minute run-time - binned that!)Run time on the Phillips is very good indeed, it never slowed in use at all.Charging is simple and quick and being a Li-on battery, no problem with top up charging. The multi angled blades are handy for around the ears and back of neck.Cleaning - not too bad, but the feel when opening the blades is that it will break easily - not that strong and a difficult clip opening, I'll avoid that.Oil is supplied, use after use and run the blades a bit.Are the blades sharp? YESIs it light and easy to use? YESIs it really a self cutting tool? NO, not really - but thats me. My daughter is much better!Washable? NO!Recommended? YES

I have 2 boys, when they were small to cut down on Barbars fees my inlaws bought us some hair clippers. They were really useful and my husband even thought they were a good idea and would line up with the boys while I cut their mops. I hated it!After a while they would bite and pull their hair and it became a chore.I was ecstatic when they decided at about 16 years old that they would have a go and do it themselves. BlissWhen this arrived my eldest and my husband were keen to try it out. my other son prefers the barbers! The first thing Matt said when he used it was it cut his hair too short. I had a look at it and could not fathom out how to make the cut longer. the clippers came with 2 combs, one larger and obviously the regular one. The smaller one looked like it was for shorter cuts. The instructions are rubbish to say the least, it took me almost half an hour to work out you turned the dial around the cutter to adjust the length of the cut.Once this was discovered Matt went on to successfully cut his hair.By the time my husband wanted to do his all the teething troubles had been ironed out and he was very much impressed with it.The cutters themselves are light and easy to hold, they are cordless which make it easier than being tied down to a certain socket. It was easy to operate, cut with no effort at all. After an hour they were recharged fully and ready to use again.I gave them 4 stars because of the dreadful instructions, other than that they are worth 5. I wish Phillips would get someone to write some decent instructions!Very impressed though. Would highly recommend them.
