Although it is listed as a replacement for 50w halogen GU10 bulb it is less bright than the 6w versions of the bulbs that I've tried in this range from Philips. It has more of a yellowish tint than the other 50w replacements due to its lower colour temperature (see notes below) but has a decent spread of light. This bulb would be a good choice if you were looking for a brighter light but still want a cosier feel to it as some of the brighter bulbs can have a clinical tone to the light. This is the only bulb that I tested which had a white housing - all of the others were silver. This Philips range has a massive choice of bulbs with just small differences between models which means that it's possible to fine tune your lighting to suit most environments.I've been lucky enough to have eight of them to try together, so have tried them all in one room at the same time (my kitchen ceiling has eight GU10 fitments). I've also used them in other rooms throughout the house in various combinations where I have fewer fittings so I have been able to compare the light that they provide and judge them accordingly. The Philips website has pages and pages of information on these bulbs if you want even more detail. They even have lighting `apps' suitable for iOS and Android, and online courses for those who want to learn more about LED lighting. For a simplified idea of what the different numbers mean when choosing a LED bulb you should consider this:The `colour' of the light is expressed in terms of temperature, and in this range varies from 2700k (yellower light, similar to a traditional bulb) through to 4000k (a bluish light which is similar to that from fluorescent lighting). Generally speaking a yellow light can look cosier in a room but isn't as good for activities such as reading or sewing, and a blue light is better for activities but can make it look clinical. The brightness or intensity of the light is dependent on its power rating which in this range is 4w, 5w or 6w, and it is also shown in its equivalent value for the halogen bulbs they are typically used to replace (35w, 50w etc); the higher the power the brighter the light. The shape of the light projected from the bulb is given as the angular dispersion it has by number of degrees (25 degrees etc). This range had 25D, 36D and 40D with the higher number having a wider light dispersion and the lower number indicating a narrower cone of light from the bulb. In practice none of these bulbs have a clear line where there is darkness beyond that cone of light, but the most concentrated areas of light are in that area. For example the 25D bulbs have their light more closely focussed directly in front of the bulb so they are very good for concentrating that light when you want to see objects very clearly. The 40D bulbs have their light more widely dispersed so they're better for lighting wider areas.Below is a list of the other models that I have tried and what I thought of them.

These Philips lightbulbs are much sturdier than the cheapo Halogen bulbs I've been buying. I've been getting cheapo ones because they keep blowing - that's the problem with halogen bulbs in a kitchen where they can easily get droplets on them which aren't good for the bulb. LED bulbs don't get hot so they aren't prone to self destructing because of a smear across the glass. I've used many halogen bulbs were the actual glass has a sharp rim which makes them tricky/dangerous to remove and install. These however are well made and are easily installed (press and twist). My light has the bulbs exposed as only the base of the bulb sits in a recess, and these are actually quite attractive as the plastic outer casing looks far more attractive than the metallic "cone" of halogen bulbs. And once switched on these are instantly bright - much brighter than I expected. I'm using a single review to cover several of these as they are are all essentially the same apart from the `warmth' of the light. The ones described as "white" give a very bright but sterile light. Perfect if you have a white kitchen you want showing at its gleaming best after daylight hours, but personally I prefer the none White/Cool White which give a warmer tone and make my palid skin look less alienlike.I will say for this particualr bulb though (which is brighter than the other 35w bulbs I've reviewed) that the light from this is exceptionally bright - it easily matches a halogen bulb and may be too bright for many situations. The light isn't narrowly focussed either (old LED bulbs were almost like light-sabres) and the light is broadcast in a wide angle.Until I've used these for years it's impossible to say how long they'll last, but these have already outlived some of my halogen bulbs and they feel much sturdier than budget LED bulbs (and brighter). Also, some LED bulbs seem wider than their Halogen equivalents and don't fit into light fittings very well, these however fit perfectly.

I have steadily been replacing conventional lighting in my house with variousenergy saving lamps. Over the years the technology has improved and the priceshave continued to fall. I have a kitchen with 16 GU10 spot lights and have purchasedseveral makes over the years, often at great expense. The one down-side of my experience with LED GU10 lamps is I've had several ofthem fail (both cheap and expensive ones). I have sometimes managed to obtaina replacement from the vendor, but it really cheeses me off when the lamp expiresjust after the guarantee runs out. This lamp is rated to last ten years; I hope it does. I can't find out how long theseare guaranteed for,but I really hope they will last for the suggested 10 years. With reference to this particular lamp, I like the colour temperature (2700K (Kelvin)and I find it's much the same temperature as a standard 50 Watt halogen GU10. Itfits easily into my light fitting and unlike some other LED lamps I have, this lamp isexactly the same length as a standard GU10, so no ugly extra millimetres protrudingout of the light fitting. I find the brightness comparable with standard 50 Watt lamps. As other reviewers have commented, the price of this type of lighting can seem ratherprohibitive, and many have done the maths to show how money will be saved over time.As mentioned earlier I hope that a product by such a reputable company as Philips willprovide a better experience than I've had with other makes of lamp I've purchased.I'll update if there are any problems.

Now if it means not changing a light bulb for a while it sounds like trying to me.Where we live we do tend to have lots of power cuts so if we purchased all LEDs and they tripped well that would be an awful lot of money wasted, so always a little of wary. Having some to try courtesy of the Vine Programme just wonderful. If only they did one that looked like a candle for the fitting over the stairs it would make life a lot easier for changing it (eight bulbs and expensive to run). Will look into the various shapes and styles now though as pleased with the LEDs using now in other fittings. These do seem expensive, well made yes, but at a low price ten pounds or thereabouts on offer expensive if needing a few to fit your fittings.Maybe fittings with less bulb holders will take off as being energy efficient too. This is a nice light that lights up just the area I need it to (certain ornament on the kitchen dresser).Been through a few power cuts recently and it is still working, which for us is a bonus, as usually we hear a popping sound not long after and another bulb down but this has gone through and lasted.UPDATENasty power cut today went out three times in the space of five mins. So to good, but this bulb is still going strong thankfully. Even after the short sharp cuts then power being off for an hour and a half.

This is the third LED replacement for a GU10 light that I have tried and it is the best yet.Although only 5 watts, the amount of light emitted is fully comparable with that of a 50 watt GU10 lamp. (Another LED replacement that I have and is satisfactory in terms of the amount of light emitted is 6 watt.)The 2700k value indicates that the light is 'warm white', and indeed it is. (The bigger the number, the whiter the light.)The angle at which light is directed out of the lamp unit is 36 degrees. That is similar to or the same as many standard GU10 lamps. The claimed average life is 20,000 hours, which is ten times that of a standard 50 watt GU10.20,000 hours is only half the specified average life of some other LED lamps - including some made by (or for?)Philips - but in most home situations 20,000 hours of use is likely to extend over a good ten years, and at its current selling price this lamp is less than half the cost of the longer life LED lamps. How many of us can be confident that we will still be using the same light units, or even living in the same house, ten or more years from now?In short, with a light that is just as bright and has the same colour tone as the lamp it replaces, offers a 90 per cent energy saving, and costs less than £10, it seems the LED replacement for the GU10 has now arrived.

This is a fantastic LED bulb which I whole heartedly recommend. Philips are undenieably the market leader, they and Toshiba are blazing the trail with LED technology.Traditional light bulbs are going the way of the dinosaur and it is clear LED technology is the way forward. However, the road to LED is not quite as simple as that. Anyone who has looked at moving to LED bulbs will now that the standards of quality vary wildly from the bulk poor quality ones to the premium ones costing in excess of thirty pounds each. The bulb itself feels very well made in hand. Once fitted I was very impressed with the result. Instant on (but not dimmable)they produce a pleasant warm light with a touch of white so they appear just a little brighter than my old halogens. It produces very little heat by comparison and as mentioned they use just a fraction of the power.Retrofitting this bulb to existing fittings is a doddle as it is all but the same size as a standard halogen GU10 which is good as some, especially the cheaper bulk ones can be slightly bulky.Overall this is a fantastic bulb although it is worth noting that the angle of light it produces isn't as wide as a standard GU10 so the resultant beam is slightly more focused. Ideal for displays and having said that is fine in my bathroom.

The Mater LED spot MV LED bulb is a standard sized dimmable spotlight bulb that utilises LED technology for a much longer lasting and more energy efficient bulb.Indeed, the packaging claims that the bulbs save up to a whopping 90% on its energy costs compared with a run-of-the-mill '50W Essential Twistline' bulb (i.e. a standard halogen one). This badboy also offers an average of 20,000 hours of use. It runs at just 5W, but is certainly bright enough. Actually, it seems to be quite a bit brighter than your standard spotlight bulb - and it comes on straight away - unlike the energy saving ones which seem to take forever to illuminate fully.Personally I really like the brightness that this bulb offers. However, my wife is far from convinced. It seems like a personal preference thing. My wife says the light that comes off the bulb seems very cold and fake. However, as I said, I like it.So, with this in mind, before investing what could amount to quite a lot, in order to replace all your existing bulbs with fancy new LED ones, it might be worth checking that you're happy with light it gives off first. Because apparently it's not to everyone's taste!!!!

I have long been fed up of the cost of replacing the spotlights in my kitchen. I was even considering changing the light fitting so that I wouldn't have to keep replacing them! You can, then, imagine my joy at the idea of such a long-lasting bulb. Hoorah for a bulb that claims to last 20,000 hours. I have, of course, been unable to test the life length of the bulb, so instead I shall tell you other notable points. The bulb is packaged well, and the packaging is relatively easily removed. The spotlight goes into the fitting very easily, and at literally the flick of a switch the light is fully on. It does not gradually get up to maximum light, but simply comes on at full power. The light is not glaringly bright, and has a nice warm note to it, whilst still providing enough lighting to do food preparation. If the bulb lasts as long as has been reported, then I will be a very happy woman. I have no way of predicting the future, but if the bulb really lasts that long then it is good to think of a bit less electricity being used. If we all did this, then I am sure it would be a step in the right direction, and perhaps a little money saved too!

As a replacement for Halogen bulbs, Philips seem to be the best you can find (and I've tried loads). As a rule LED bulbs have all ways suffered from a very narrow beam, so only work as spot lighting and haven't been able to replace room downlighters. Philips seem to have solved that problem.Boasting a beam angle of 36 degrees it's actually a wider beam than a standard halogen bulb and appears to be slightly brighter than our 50w halogen bulbs (coupled with the fact it shouldn't dim with use).I've currently got this in a desk lamp and it's perfect. It did work well in the ceiling lights, although if I were being picky, I did think it had a very slight blue tint to it.Probably not a problem if you had a whole room of them, but one in with 4 halogens was a noticeable colour change. Also, as with all LED's, whilst they do get warm with use, (although nothing like a halogen) they don't throw the heat into the room, so you can happily sit under one of these without burning your scalp after a few hours.

This superb bulb is a perfect replacement for 50W halogen downlighters. The white surround to this bulb makes it suited more to white plastic fittings, but when it's up on the ceiling it's really hard to tell anyway. The light colour and brightness is very close to a 50W halogen. In fact I think it's slightly nicer, but near enough for anyone not to notice unless pointed out. It's therefore useful when mixing halogens and LEDs, for example when replacing halogens one by one as the bulb fails. The bulbs are very compact and no larger than a standard halogen GU10, another great development as sometimes LEDs can be much longer for the heat sink and therefore not fit some holders. These should be universal.Good performance so far, and it's great to see big manufacturers putting their names to 50W equivalents - I've tried them before and had rubbish results. They are an incredible energy saving compared to halogens, so what's not to love about these bulbs? Excellent product.

I have a ceiling mounted light in my office that takes 3 bulbs of this specification.Using standard bulbs in the fitting is a complete chore as they frequently require replacing. This in itself is no easy task as the bulbs are the most inconvenient I have ever used as they often prove extremely stubborn to remove from the fitting and then the new bulbs are sometimes difficult to seat properly even when using the rubber sucker that was supplied with the light fitting. This bulb is a huge improvement.Owing to the high quality construction fitting is a breeze and if & when removal is required I am expecting a less arduous experience as it sits slightly proud of the fitting and does not generate theheat of standard bulbs.I cannot comment on Philips's claims for the life of this bulb as I have only been using it for 3 weeks so far but if their quote of 10 years at 4 hours a day together with an 90% energy use reduction is correct I will be delighted.

Both my wife and I used to work for Philips Lighting and know the extend they go to design and test their lighting products. They consider safety, ease of use and performance to specification as a minimum requirement, not a bonus. We no longer work for that company but I would be hard pushed to settle with less than a Philips Lighting product. We have moved into our new home recently which had almost 100 halogen spots in the ceilings around the house and thus are replacing them room by room to reduce our energy costs. These 5W replacements are superb! They fit our existing fittings perfectly and the lighting colour matches better than expected (we like and wanted warm white light).Just be careful to note that these are are not designed for dimming.Perhaps I am still biased because I used to work the company that sell these but I cannot praise these products enough!

I have been researching energy saving lighting to replace old GU10's for a while, and have always been put off by the price. After reading reviews about the Corepro I decided to take the plunge and replace 14 of my most used bulbs. No regrets at all, my initial concerns that they would not equal the brightness of the halogen bulbs was quickly resolved. The light is a clean white light and brighter than the old bulbs. Most noticeable was the lack of heat that these new bulbs generate. Part of my kitchen is an open plan south facing conservatory and during the summer evenings the kitchen can still be uncomfortably hot especially once the additional heat of the old bulbs was added. The Corepro produce no heat which can only indicate how much energy they are going to save me over their lifetime. Shouldn't be this excited about a light bulb but i am!!!

I wasn't sure if this bulb would fit my lamp-holder (a 4-bulb affair) but it was as easy as wink to remove the old bulb and put this one into place. Switch on and the light is immediate, there's no waiting for warm-up. The bulb gives a warm, quite gentle light (I don't mean weak, I mean not blinding) ideal for dining rooms, sitting rooms and bedrooms. The information with the bulb tells me it saves considerably on electricity usage (up to 80%) and has a life of around 20,000 hours burning time. I shan't be making any notes but that sounds a lot of time to me.It's true, these bulbs are not cheap but I think they are excellent value because they save so much electricity and last so long.It looks smart, it gives a lovely light and I'm happy with it.

At it's current price in the Amazon catalogue (£11 07/13) this is a good buy. It produces a very good soft light that would make it suitable for uplighters or down-lighters where you want a softer light as opposed to a bright white (4000k). It feels well made and robust, in addition Philips is a good name in lighting. Will it last 20000 hours? Who knows? The lifetime rating is a best guestimate based on the extrapolation of lab results. However, if it did, it works out at around 50p a year plus the energy saving - compared to a mercury long life, which is either 9W or 11W for the equivalent incandescence. There's also an environmental benefit in that in 20 years time this low energy bulb doesn't contain mercury and can be safely disposed of.
