As a PSU fan I've really been looking forward to this game being released and purchased it a couple of weeks ago, believing it to be somewhat similar if not better than the Original. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, I was wrong. While indeed it continues on the Story from Episode 1 there are alot of good and bad points to the game.Lets start with the good points:1: You can create and play as your own unique Character in the story.2: The Story itself is very compelling and addictive, you tend to want to sit at the computer until you're done, or your dog tired, whichever comes first.3: If you don't want to create your own Character in the game you can transfer Characters from your Original PSU's extra mode.A Lazyman's route if you don't want to start at the bottom.4: Theres a load of new weapons and Photon Arts to play around with. Also in Network mode you can place room decorations anywhere in your room, if the set up of your room allows it. If you play a character from the original PSU and play it in AOTI you'd need to go to the room decorations store to get the new decorations in order to do this and there are other fun things to do to your new room also.5: You can play online or offline (however you still need an internet connection in order to play the game)6: While currently unavailable right now (from the time this review is written), you'll soon be able to choose where your room is in Network mode. You can set your room to go to any planet of your choosing or stay at the Guardians colony. This makes a nice change instead of seeing space all the time, and also makes it that little more realisic as not all Guardians would live at the Colony.Now...to the bad points:1: While this may strike to some as weird but I've had problems with the single player game 'hanging' at the most annoying times, e.g. when you or the Partner Characters are changing weapons or if you're Nanoblasting or using the SUVs, yet when I go into Network mode I have no problems with this. It could be my computer acting up or it could be a bug in the game, I'm not really sure.2: While it is great that you can play as your own character, you don't exactly do much except nod. Theres no conversations between your character and the other characters, just monologues which bug the hell out of me in honest truth.3: You always need to be connected to the internet, whether you're playing in single mode or network mode. While it is obvious why you'd need it for network mode I don't really see the reason for it in Single mode. Perhaps its to continually update the stability of the single mode game, which in my case it needs...either that or I just need a new computer.4: The Story missions are too short in my opinion. When you got to the end of the story missions in the original PSU, you were at least level 50 but with this one you're done with all the C class story missions by the time you're level 30 and you can't do the B class missions until you're level 35 which is a pain. While it is good that you can do the free missions outside the storyline to level up, there is literally nothing to do, and no real reason to repeat the story missions time and again, even if they're at B, A, or S level.5: It is extremely time consuming to level up a character in Network mode. If you're a die hard fan (which, although I'm a fan I wouldn't go that far) or have way too much time on your hands this wouldn't matter much to you. On top of that it is hard to earn the Meseta (money) you need to get the weapons you need for your characters without the help you need in the beginning.5: Lack of voiced movies, while they bug some players when they're on the original PSU, there's a distinct lack of them here. Only time you'll see a voiced movie is in the beginning with the Divine Maiden and then with Laia, but thats it. The rest are the constant pressing of the return key to see the rest of the story.I suppose another good point I could mention at the end here is Sega are currently developing Episode 3, which allows you and your own character to interact more with the other characters in the story, which is an excellent change. Also, if you love Hal, the Gurhal Channel 5 Newscaster from the first PSU then you'll see more of her here as she gives news updates. If you hate her then she's easily skipable. However you can only play Episode 3 in Network mode right now and the story isn't complete as yet. Maybe later this year or early next we will see Episode 3 released as a new stand-alone/expansion. From the chapters I've played so far, it looks like its going to be a vast improvement from Episode 2 so I guess its something to look forward to.Overall, if you're a fan of the Phantasy Star Universe game, then you will enjoy this game to a certain degree though Sega could've done better. Fortunately, it seems Sega does take suggestions of how to improve the game seriously and who knows, maybe if/when Episode 3 is released as an expansion, it will make the franchise a bit better. Personally I think they released Episode 2 a little too early and could've worked on the interactions a bit more. From what I've seen of Episode 3 in Network mode though, they seem to have taken this into account so I wouldn't necessarily dismiss this franchise quite yet, even if Episode 2 seems to be a rush job.
