The Vari-Kennel in the 40" size is the home of Riley, our now 15-week-old German shepherd dog puppy. Like most new dog owners wise enough to realize that crate training is the only way to go, I anguished over metal crate or plastic crate. Well I finally decided to go for the Vari-Kennel after reading a lot of forum accounts of dogs getting injured in their metal crates. But that said, it was still a toss up because this big giant plastic airline-certified crate is big, and appears bigger than a like-sized metal crate that you can see though. But once it was in the house, my hypothalamus kicked in and it became part of the background noise of our quiet open-architecture house. The crate is really well-made.It comes in two halves and you simply mate the upper and lower and use the enclosed hardware (thumbscrews) to secure it. No tools necessary. The gate mechanism is solid and Riley has not challenged its security. It's wicked easy to clean, too, which I accomplish by wiping it out with lysol wipes and then hitting it with our hand steamer, just to prevent any parasites/ova/cysts from hanging around in there. Now the important part: Riley digs it. I mean, he loves it. This is his den from puppyhood at 9 weeks until the end of his long life. When he first came home, we had it all set up with a nice soft bed (Midwest Quiet Time Pet Bed Deluxe Tan Ombre Swirl 35" x 23") and I placed a big plastic file box in the back of it to function as a partition. As you know, the partition is critical in house training your pup - at first, all she needs is room to turn around and reposition herself in the crate ... any other space and she'll get busy in the there if you know what I mean. By the time Riley was 12 weeks, he was 100% housetrained (with a 1-week safety factor, just to make sure) and we were able to pull the partition and give him the whole crate for the big puppy stretch-out thing ... which is remarkably cute. Now all we have to say is Go To Camp! and he hustles into the crate and does a 180-degree turn and sits and waits for his treat. Sweet. One last thing: if he gets barky or whiny or old-man hrumph-y in the crate, we just lay a blanket over the crate and he quiets right down. Remarkably quickly. Not sure why it works so well but I'm not going to question the Puppy Gods over it. Maybe that will work for you, too.**UPDATE** Riley's now 6 months old and 60 pounds. This size crate is too small for him. So whilst he can lay in it and turn around, he cannot stretch out sideways or lengthwise. Also, German Shepherd Dogs are known to flop down on their sides when they lay down, and the crate does not give him the space to pull off this behavior. Thus, we are upgrading to the next size up.

We raise dogs and have 8 dogs that all live in our home. There are many times we need to separate some of them for short periods of time for- feeding, dogs in heat, sleeping, etc. I used to shop "Craigslist" to find used kennels because I was looking for "affordable" kennels, even though they would be used. I would drive all over a 3 county area trying to collect the kennels, often arriving to find rusty and/or broken kennels. Then, I discovered the "Petmate" kennels. These kennels aren't fancy BUT the cost of a new "Petmate" kennel was equivalent, or less, than the used kennels I had been buying. The larger "Petmate" kennels are joined by screws, instead of "convenient" clips, but they are very durable, easy to clean, relatively attractive, and incredibly practical. I love that all kennel sizes, except the 2 smallest sizes, are the same color so they look uniform in the kitchen and bedroom. We crate all our dogs in the car and these kennels work great for travelling. Because they are so much less expensive than other kennel brands, over time, we have able to purchase enough "Petmate" kennels to have dedicated kennels in the kitchen and bedroom, and in each of our vehicles, so that we have eliminated the huge hassle of hauling kennels around, like we used to. On top of everything else, our dogs seem to love them and we have never had any problems with the kennels, and we have been using these kennels for years. I am so "sold" on these kennels, that in the past 2 months, we bought 5 more kennels, so we could finally achieve our goal of dedicated kennels for each vehicle. These kennels are also legal to be used for transporting dogs by plane, which we occasionally do for shows.

I have to give this pet carrier a five star rating, because it’s durable, well made and the assembly instructions were clear and detailed. It was brought for the transportation of my small dog (whippet) to a local vet. I purchased this with the intention of transporting the dog via my mobility scooter but it was too big.Nevertheless, it wasn’t a purchase in error item that will just sit around the home. It is used as and when she wants somewhere safe to be. Somewhere cool and dark. Safe from fireworks etc.I know it’s not soundproof but it’s a sanctuary place almost. It can be dismantled whenever needed and can be half the size needed if need be.Also it’s stronger than the fabric ones available, this was a huge concern. When I first brought my puppy, she was a chewer. She has demolished quite a few robust items, so the fabric ones were eliminated straight away. The door or gate is very secure I’d just like to add. My wee lass is very excitable and very strong for her size. Yet if I had to use the cage to allow me to do something (like open the door) me being disabled and a wheelchair user, the door being a side door onto the street. She would run for eternity lolIt would just make things much harder for me. If I was to shut her away for two minutes whilst I take an Amazon parcel in, it helps. Trust me!I hope this review helps someone who is carefully considering their choices! Best wishes

I purchased the 30 to 50 lb size for my two brother cats. They have a lot of anxiety when they're separated so I wanted to get them a large carrier for trips so that they can travel together. We are moving soon and I also wanted the bigger crate for them to both be able to quiver in fear together in while they get used to the new house. A safe space, if you will. To make sure it wasn't new and scary, I've set it up with blankets and an ugly sheet that we don't use. As you can see, my large male cat is already comfortable inside.Pros: TSA approved, sturdy, easy to assemble, has holes for zip-ties at the opening for extra security while traveling, strong closure, easy to take apart for storage, you can assemble the door to open to the left or right, your choice, and cats think it's rad.Cons: no handles for carrying. Could be difficult to carry a large pet in.In the photo, you can see how large the 30 to 50lb carrier is compared to a small carrier.

I like that this is true to size as described and easy to assemble. All the holes lined up and it came with metal bolts and wing nuts (encased in plastic). However, I am disappointed how flimsy the crate feels. I have a Bargain Hound that is about 3 inches smaller than this one and it holds my 26 pound dog much more securely when using the handle. When you use the handle on this crate, the top bends up (with dog inside). Luckily, there are "LIFT HERE" areas on the sides of the crate to properly carry the load. (I will be taping down the handle to prevent anyone from actually using it to lift the crate.) The only reason why I bought this is because we will be flying soon and needed a crate with a head clearance 2 inches higher (per airline regulations).I'm giving it four stars for price and covering most of the airline regs.

I received this recently and have just come to assemble today. Mine is not the colour advertised but all cream[just dark clips]---but no great problem. It was 'easyish' to assemble. By that I mean I did have to push the clips together with a bit of 'oomph' but eventually all clipped into place. The fact that is was a little tight to clip is quite good as,hopefully, the clips will actually STAY clipped!!! It does seem sturdy enough but I have not bought the basket for any air-line travel only as a 'stand-by' basket for any vet trips to accommodate my 7kgs+ cat [or his smaller brother!!!] It does seem he will have quite a bit of room to stretch and be comfy. I cannot comment on the handles'strength---- as I 've stated its a 'stand-by'. It appears good for my boys.

It came with the wrong hardware so I called 1877-petmate. On 2/18/20 They said they would ship out hardware. I’ll update this if I get the right hardware. They said I could go to a hardware store and buy the right size hardware. That is ridiculous! The picture shows the bolts are way too long and the wing nuts don’t screw on far enough to tighten the halves together. I’ll update this review if they follow through with the right hardware. I did receive the correct hardware. If they had just told me about the delay upfront it would have been appreciated. Nice product b

This was the solution to our problem for crating our large german shepherd puppy. She is growing so fast and we are still training her and having to crate her indoors. The summer months have made her prone to shedding a lot more because of the heat so this kennel keeps her both cooler and has allowed us to keep her space clean. The kennel overall is easy to clean. It fastens shut securely and is easy to use. I compared the pricing to the kennels in the pet stores and Amazon definitely had the better deal. Great buy and fantastic quality, worth the price.

This kennel was easy to assemble, light weight and the perfect size for our 70lb Labrador. We own a much older version of this kennel and knew it was a brand we could trust. The door is easy to operate and can be installed to open in either direction. The plastic is smooth and easy to clean as well. We have used it for all three of our Labradors, from puppy to our 8 year old. It's also easy to secure with bungie straps in the bed of our truck and allows for excellent airflow to help keep our pups cool. So far, so good!

bear in mind that this size is HUGE and when assembled, doesn't fit in a compact or even standard car. Even my hatchback isn't tall enough. it is great for the home though, this is my pug's den and he sleeps in it comfortably. pretty well built. obviously wouldn't be spacious for a big dog, and i can not review how it holds up to a big dog. Probably fine. Feels sturdy. But would not hold up well to a big dog that chews or rustles around a lot--but your dog should be trained to not do that anyway.

This appears to be a well-made carrier and the bleached linen color is lovely. It arrived quickly with all pieces (they are between the top and bottom pieces, so don't panic when you open the box - they are there. However, it was too big for my car. I like to have my cat up front with me, and I took measurements, but this 28" kennel was just too big - guess I measured incorrectly. I still give 5 stars because it appears to be a great carrier, solidly constructed.

Worked perfectly for our purpose. It's a light weight crate (as you would expect at this price) but was perfect for a new puppy. We needed something smaller than an adult crate for a small pup, and she fell I love with it. Now that she is over the 20 lb size, she still squeezes into it sometimes to hide a toy or curl up tight. Probably would not be a good choice for a lifetime crate due to lightweight materials. Definitely not suitable for shipping/air travel.

This was, by far, the easiest thing I have ever assembled. Took about 5 minutes. Put our doggie bed in side of it and our 19 lb dog was very curious and got in to it very quickly. Now we can't keep her out. It's her new home. She outgrew her smaller one and this is just the right size for her to be able to stretch out instead of being so confined. Her doggie bed fits in it perfectly. The latching door is very well made and easy to operate.

This product has plenty of room for our Bichon Frise and she is very comfortable with the extra space and ventilation. We bought the smallest crate and carrier when she was 3 months old and she was just too big for it now that she is almost a year old. The light color is better too as it doesn't draw too much heat while riding to and from the groomer and the vet in the summer. The carrier was easy to put together and stays clean.

We got a puppy in September 2020, as she out grew our old crate, I needed a new one for her. This was probably too big for a French bulldog, but I wasn't sure how big she would be when she was done growing. Either way the quality is great, very easy to assemble and easy to clean. We primarily use this for her overnight sleeping. She has plenty of room for a bed and blankets to snuggle with. Overall this was a great purchase.
