I compared the UCF R 8x21 to a Leupold Yosemite 8x30 and a Pentax DCF XP 8x33 at about 5:00pm in SoCal, about two hours or so before sundown at this time of year. I looked at trees two backyards to the south, about 50 yards (observed a hummingbird, mockingbird, raven and various small songbirds), a hillside with scrub oak about a quarter mile to the north, and of course 360 degrees at various distances. I'm a novice with binos and I compared the UCR to what I have (as opposed to other compact binos that I don't have) so this isn't an "expert" or apples-to-apples review but I think it will still be helpful to other novices such as myself. The DCF is brighter with better contrast but mind you it's only really noticeable with direct side-by-side comparison. The UCR and Yosemite are basically the same even with the UCR's much smaller objective lens, so kudos to the UCR there. I wear glasses and eye relief on the UCR is acceptable -- I have to press my glasses against the eyepieces a little bit to get a good picture, but it doesn't bother me personally. Also, it's harder to hold the picture with the UCR, but I guess that's to be expected with such a small objective and again, it's not enough to bother me personally. Overall the image quality is excellent considering I wasn't expecting it to compare to the larger binos as well as it did. I had no problems with working the controls (focus knob, eyepieces, etc) on any of the three binos. The UCR seems to be less sturdy than the other two, with much less substantial "body armor" (but also much less weight). The case is somewhat comparable (they're all pretty cheap, with the DCF being the least cheap) and the UCR has a strap with a single attachment point instead of a standard two-point neck strap. It'll fit around your neck but it's just a cord with nothing to disperse the weight (although again, it's a very light bino at less than 1/2 lb) so it seems more designed to be a wrist strap. I have no objections to the strap and in fact I rather like its ultra-compactness -- it just sort of fits in with the whole theme of the UCR.Where the UCF really shines is in its price-to-value ratio. You can buy over two UCRs for the price of one Yosemite and something like seven or eight for the price of one DCF (when they sold them new). The weight and dimensions of the UCR compare favorably to compact roof prisms, which is pretty remarkable for a porro prism, and you're going to pay at least three or four times as much for a compact roof prism with comparable optics.I got the UCR for viewing sports and other in-town events and for light hiking. I've used it at a basketball game from the cheap seats, at the horse races, and on several light hikes on some local cross country trails. The UCR performs superbly for those applications and I hardly notice it's there when I'm not using it. I just slip it into my pants pocket or it fits into cargo short pockets with room to spare, and I can even slip it into a shirt pocket w/o the case. The UCR fills a need I had for a compact bino that still delivers good optics and I'm very happy with it, especially at only $40. When I go camping and fishing I'll take the DCF or Yosemite but for everything else it's the UCR.

These binoculars are OK - light and compact with good optics. However, don't base your purchase on the Product Description. I bought a pair and the enclosed "owner's manual" pointed out "Keep in mind that the binoculars are not water or weather resistant" which hardly coincides with "The product is fully waterproof and has maximum protection against rain, dust, moisture,..." stated in the product description. I wonder how much else of the description is generic and does not apply to this model. Two days later: As a result of my complaint Amazon suspended this item from sale and when it returned the description had been changed to remove references to it being waterproof. On that basis it's worth bumping up from three to four Stars.

I am super happy with these Pentax 8x21 binoculars. They are amazingly compact. I use them for watching birds at the feeder at home, and I carry them on walks because they are lightweight and super compact. The field of view is good, it’s wider than I would have expected, and 8 power magnification gives it that one-more-step of oomph when looking for details. When I was a kid I always had 7x35 binoculars and it’s amazing what that 1 more power of magnification will do. You do notice the difference. If you can grab a pair of these before they’re gone, do it.

This is our first binocular purchase and was quite apprehensive about it knowing how the viewing experience differs from individual to individual. This is a compact, lightweight binocular and very handy with both the missus and the 6yo.For its price, it's value for money as the views are both sharp and magnified and enhances any sightseeing. We use it mostly for checking out urban-scape and nature. It comes with instructions on how to set the focus and that's all it takes. As always the amazon experience was flawless.

I was delighted to receive these binoculars within the week. They are just what I wanted, and economically priced without any loss of quality I have had a long experience with several types of binocular, and these are just right for general field trips and holidays abroad, being small, light and image-bright, yet sufficiently powerful for general purpose viewing, including use on cruises.

I borrowed a pair of these on holiday and was so impressed I bought a pair for myself. They are excellent: light, easy to use and very sharp images. I use them to watch my son sailing in dinghy regattas, and the sharpness of the image means I can pick out his sail number more easily than I could with more expensive (& bulky) binoculars.

Good product considering it's price. Lightweight, bright and quite sharp optically. Product quality too seems good. If you need a compact, fairly sharp, lightweight and reasonably priced binocular, look no further. There are sharper and much better ones in the market but they are also expensive.

These Pentax binoculars are a great addition to any pocket, glove box, or shelf next to a window with a view. I would advise the use of the wrist strap to prevent dropping due to their small size. Optics are very good and I am strongly considering purchasing another pair for a back up.

Really impressed with these - not an expert and bought them for my dad (who it turned out had some) but kept them for myself for a safari trip. Well... so easy to pull out and zoom in on things . They were as good as the rangers massive pair but could fit in your pocket. Very pleased

Perfect, high relation quality-price, I enjoy a lot with them, from the observation of the details of the coloured windows of a cathedral, to the study of animal behavior in their midst. The images are clear and sharp and they are very light, I'm sure you and your neck will smile!

Very light with a very good contrast!! Amazing quality for the price. It's very handy to choose the width between your eyes, and you can keep it set when stored in the case. It's a best choice for bringing it in every trek, walk, ... in your bag.

I bought these because I wanted a compact pair of compacts for travel. These are excellent binocs at a bargain price. I wish that they were waterproof, but at this price it is unrealistic. Construction is very solid, and the optics are excellent.

Bought these as present. Image is clear and sharp and the binoculars are very light... ...maybe a little too light. I wondered how robust the binoculars are - hence the four stars rather than five. But for casual use they should be fine.

Love these mini binoculars! I can see everything so clearly...even very far away. I love the fact that they are so compact and can easily fit into my purse to take to concerts and shows and such. Great quality!
