So, to be clear, there's SALTWATER rated and IN THE SURF rated, as far as I'm concerned. You can pretty much use any reel in the saltwater, as long as you don't get it IN the saltwater. What I mean is if you're on a boat and fishing, just rinse your reels real well when you get home, and you'll be fine. However, if you're IN the surf, meaning you're wading in the surf and fishing actively, there's a huge difference on how the reels will perform. The reason is the Surf offers all kinds of issues that gum up reels really quick. When standing in the surf, of course, your reel is going to get pounded by saltwater, but there's other elements, such as that very, very fine "Grit" that's in the surf water,as well as active normal sized sand. That fine "grit" is a REAL reel destroyer. I've had numerous reels I had to open up and completely cleanse after a day of surf fishing. That grit binds with the grease and will completely fail a reel (To where you literally can't crank the reel anymore). So I rate saltwater reels as from a boat and IN the surf. These Penn Spinfisher series are truly surf rated. I've had these reels completely submerged in the surf water, 20 yards into the surf (Sometimes you have to put the reel end in the water and climb your pole to remove tangles with Braid, so forth). These Penn reels have delivered and continued to operate. the drags are sealed and the reel seems to be sealed as well. However, that doesn't mean to neglect them. After every surf fishing trip, upon arrival at home, I hose them off real good, blasting the water on a jet stream around all the critical areas. I blow them off with an air compressor and sometimes spray a little silicon on the handle knob and the bail bearing... VOILA, they're good as new. These Penn's deliver with little maintenance and so far have offered up months of aggressive fishing.

Bought it specifically for a tuna trip out to the oil rigs in the gulf. Fishing a few days a few hundred feet down made me wish it was electric eventually, but that's not the reel's fault.Landed good sized blackfin, snapper, and amberjack with no issues. Had an amazingly fun time with an 80 pound yellowfin. The reel never missed a lick. Ran 50 pound braid with 80 pound mono topshot. The drag, and the rest of the reel for that matter, were definitely tested by this fish. Had to loosen it up a few times to let it run to save the tackle, but when we tightened the drag back down the fish always came back to the boat. Smooth casting while using heavy tackle.side note : I paired this with a Penn Mariner II ($40)because the local outfitters didn't have the $130 rod I was looking for in stock. That cheap rod worked pretty well TBH, I was impressed. Save your money. I used my saved money for shoes and a hat for the trip.

I got the 4500 and paired it with Major Craft N-One NSS-962ML.Although the Spinnfisher VI 4500 is a little bit heavier than other reels of simillar size, it pairs perfectly with the Major Craft 9'6" rod.I have the reel for a few months and haven't had any issue or any clog whatsoever. And it took some hard beatings, sand, salt water dipping and it works perfect. Apart from tap water washing under the faucet after every fishing session I havenn't treated the Spinfisher with no lubricant or oil and it rotetes as smooth as in the day I got it.The only disadvantage I can find with this reel is the somewhat hardish lowest drag, which is harder than in other reels I have.

I have eight different Penn Reels. First bought in 1982 a SS 320, now I trust Penn Reels as they have given me great service in every type of fishing one can do. In shore ,near shore , boat etc. Never have any ever failed me. I do take very good care of my reels tho. As ya should with yers no matter the brand. There are a lot of very good reels out there . For " MY " money tho I want Penn brand. My SS320 only cost $ 55.00 (?) My newest ( 2 years now ) Light reel a SS 2500VI , cost $ 140.00 ! Same size ,just 6th generation . Even they are no longer made in the " U S A " , they are still the best for the money. Thank you, Tom Daytona Beach, FL.

I love it! Biggest fish i've landed on this reel has been 30 inch stripper, from the beach!!I picked up the 4500 Spinfisher vi, spooled it with 20lb power pro V2 and rigged it on a 7ft MH St Croix mojo inshore rod. I bought it to surf cast for schoolie strippers and bluefish. I throw .5oz --1.5oz lures with this set up. I have fished this set up 4-5 days a week for 4 months with no failures. My only advice for potential owners of this Penn reel and all Penn reels is, don't over spool Penn reels.I own many Penn reels (battle 2's, spinfisher V's and slammer's) If i had to pick my favorite line it's now the Spinfisher VI !!!!

The web page for purchasing the Spinfisher VI 4500 is misleading. The Live Liner system is advertised on the Amazon web page for the Spinfisher VI 4500. The 4500 does not have that feature. I just received mine. The ad (I'm being generous by calling it an ad), is not specific to the model, but it is very, very misleading. I don't really care because the Live Liner system seems excessive to me, and just another unnecessary thing to deal with and potentially have go bad. But I was anticipating my reel having that feature, based on the web page. The reel seems great can't wait to use it!

I chose this reel to pair with a St. Croix med/light 7’ rod for wade fishing for Speckled Trout around the Outer Banks . I’ve owned the larger 650 Penn for years but it’s a little too much weight and overkill for where I’ll be fishing. This reel is made well , and I expect it to last for many years just like my 640 has . One thing I did need to do was to remove the washer and replace it with the provided smaller one to balance and even my line onto my reel , which was easy and did the trick .

Bought this after my best friend passed away to create a tribute rod for him. Kept striking out on the big one to no fault of the reel. Took vacation to Myrte beach a month later and had to check out their fishing since I've never been. No one catching crap i kept trying. Before i know it, drag is pulling out faster than ive ever seen on a reel. Took me 10 mins to wrangle it in but i caught a bonnet head shark with no difficulty! This reel made it simple to catch this. I bought the 4500

Very nice reel. The drag is smooth. Some play in the handle joint and side to side pressure. Anti reverse is instant. Spins quite freely despite relatively heavy sealing. In my opinion, the 3500size is the perfect size for inshore, kayak, portable setup. While it could probably handle boat fishing, the line capacity is lower than 4500 which suits me perfectly as I favor the smaller spool and rotor. It appears that it's made to last some time.Good buy overall.

I've caught slot Redfish, Spotted Sea Trout, and Flounder on this Spinfisher VI 2500 reel. Plenty of drag and line capacity for just about everything you'll catch inshore or nearshore in Florida, including Bonnethead Sharks. One of the major selling points for me was IPX5 rating. It doesn't take much saltwater to start corroding parts, so keeping saltwater out and grease/oil in was a big selling point for me. These reels aren't cheap, so I want them to last.

I love Penn reels. Ive been using exclusively Penn for over 30 years. You can't go wrong with any gold spool Penn. I wash all my Penn reels with dawn soap water and a soft bristle brush and rinse with a mist and not a jet of water after every use and never have the "tight reel" problems I hear about in reviews all the time. If you treat your Lady, dog, guns, and reels good they'll treat you good. A few minutes of maintenance goes a long way.

I have used spinning reels for over 50 yrs bass fishing and I'm not gentle with my equipment. I own a 3500 and have been using hard for a few years and it has always performed. I recently purchased the 2500 and I'm liking the smaller size and lighter weight. Penn has got a real winner in the Spinfisher line...a little heavier than most but the quality and performance is stellar....Thanks for making quality reels

I bought the 4500 size for my eight foot st. croix triumph rod, I’ve had the reel for about three months now and I have been the crap out of it. I’ve probably caught at least a hundred blue fish including ten over 15 pounds. The drag is very smooth and handles big fish beautifully. On one outing I accidentally dropped my reel in the water, this didn’t seem to affect the reel in anyway.

Paired this with a 7ft medium fast action St. Croix Tidemaster rod for offshore Snapper (Mangrove, Yellowtail, Lane) fishing. First day using this combo surprising landed a 25ft Gag Grouper.......the drag held up very well on this large fish. Rated this a 4 star vs. 5 because of the small paddle. Wish this reel had the larger egg shape paddle, otherwise great reel for the $

The reel seemed to be strong right out of the box. I think the battle 2 is a little smoother. I cant really say anything about the performance or the durability because I haven't had the chance to test it out yet. Hopefully I will get the chance to really soon. If its anything like my other Penn reels, I'm sure I wont be disappointed.
