OK, so it's technically a bit overpriced, but the alternatives aren't worth dealing with unless you're using a particular kind of cable or have a fair bit of dexterity. IceToolz and Pedro's mess up a perfectly good design by putting serrations on their gripping surface which is fine for plastic-coated cable but tears up bare cable or the silicone-lubed stuff favored in Shimano's higher-end component groups; Hazen fail to incorporate a locking mechanism which means you've still only got one free hand, OK most of the time but occasionally troublesome; this tool from Park puts it all together with some added padding to the handles although the grade of metal and rivets seems almost identical to IceToolz (same diameter rivets, same 3.2mm chromed steel, perhaps marginally tighter fit and finish). It would be quite simple for the competition to up their cable-pulling game and put some pressure on Park, but until then, this apparently rare understanding by Park of the dangers of serrated teeth on the grip surface is why you're paying almost $50 for this tool.If you're only using the plastic-coated cable -- and a lot of local bike shops will tend to resort to this type on general-purpose bikes -- you're probably OK with the cheaper tools with serrated gripping surfaces, as long as you're careful.

This is a common tool offered by several companies all of which do the same basic thing. This tool does a great job with that basic thing. What's different between this & some of the others is a locking ratchet. I've read previously that the lock is something between unnecessary & inconvenient. It may be unnecessary, but it is a convenience that makes it possible to pull to the right tension & then let go, relax & either free up your other hand &/or not worry about over tensioning the cable while your focusing on securing it. I use the tool on my brakes as well as derailleurs, it is on the latter where having your other hand is helpful & it is also important not to accidentally over tighten the cable.Rarely has the lock engaged when I didn't want it to, it hasn't been a big deal. If, however, you are the kind of person who yells at your garden hose when it gets stuck on a corner, the lock could be similarly irritating.

Bike maintenance is like meditation for me; it relaxes me, it makes the stress melt away. With the exception of running new cables.Sure, the beginning part is fine; preparing the housings, getting the perfect cable route, making sure everything stays nice and clean. But then you get to the brake or derailleur and realize that you need three, possibly four hands to get everything right. This frustrates the living daylights out of me.This tool is expensive for what it does, but it allows one to dial in the perfect cable tension, and makes the process effortless. Just keep the tool lined up, the little ratchet holds the tension for you, and tighten down the clamp bolt with your other hand.Easy as pie. If you've got rim brakes, keep them at the right position with a tie wrap while you do the above process.Five stars all day.

I have considered buying this tool many times, but have always balked at the price. After using it to run new brake and shift cables on a bike with cantilever brakes, I will say it is definitely worth the price. I was able adjust everything perfectly in minutes instead of adjusting and testing over and over like I’ve done in the past. This tool also works great to pull cable ties right. I used it to install a wired bike computer and got very clean, professional looking results. If you’re on the fence, buy it. You’ll thank yourself every time you need to do any cable work.

I saw the other review and felt I should add mine. I have this Park Tool and I purchase from this manufacturer because they are top quality. My tool is perfect I have changed many cables and found the tool to do exactly what it is supposed to do it even has a simple release mechanism that works perfectly. In relation to the other review the handles have never come off in fact I have never felt any play in them as for the rivets again these are set perfectly to allow the tool to work. I might suggest that the other reviewer should send their one back for a replacement.

This is a fantastic tool and critical for anybody who maintains their own bicycle. Setting cable tension on the brakes was so easy, than you can get the brakes set perfectly on the first try. Setting cable tension on the derailleurs takes a little bit more finesse because the tool works so well, its really easy to set the tension far too stiff. Once you figure out how much tension is needed, the tool allows you to set the derailleurs in a matter of minutes with a lot less fuss and frustration. This is a must for anybody who wants to work on their own bicycle.

Park Tool has really got this whole bike tool thing figured out. They post the most helpful and clear YouTube tutorial videos with step-by-step instructions clearing up the whole home mechanic situation, and then they tell you exactly what tools by name you will need to get the job done. I wish more companies would follow their lead. It is functional marketing without any gimmicks. All of that being said, this is another great tool produced by Park. It does its job and doesn't fray cable ends like some other, maybe less expensive, tools here on Amazon.

This was a replacement for one that I lost a few years ago ..... I need to release the cable from the gear mech in order to force fresh oil through the cable with a hydraulic cable oiler, and it takes me less than a minute to readjust the cable absolutely spot on .......... It works just as well with the brake cables ........ At forty two quid it's a fair investment, but still worth the money when you consider what a bike shop would charge you for setting up the gears .........

I have used this tool on several bicycles and it is extremely useful holding the brake cables and shift cables tension while you are able to check and test for the proper tesion you are trying to achieve. It allows you to free your hands to do other things until you are ready to tighen down the pinch-bolt.I also bought the ICETOOLZ version of this tool first, then I purchased Park Tool version next. Park Tool version of the 4th tool is heavier and more expensive.

A little pricey but after reading reviews of other 4th hand tools, I ended up dishing out the money for this one.Great tool for brake adjustments on our four bikes at the house. Definitely a maintenance must especially when you have two kids that like steep trails on their BMX and mountain bikes.Even the neighbor asked to borrow it to adjust his bikes.Applications for use can be found on google when adjusting brake lines.Any questions, please feel free.

I've replaced my cables several times now. This time I decided to try out the 4th Hand to make the process a little easier. Why didn't I get this sooner? Gone are the ratty, frayed ends, the "oops too tight", and "oops too lose" guessing games. Being able to micro-adjust with the tool, hands-free, while checking brake lever travel is amazing! Allows me to actually use my torque wrench instead of gorilla-clamping my cables down. Works for shifter cables too.

This is absolutely a bike mechanic's dream tool for putting the correct tension on brake and derailleur cables. I wish I had bought this BT-2 Park Tool sooner. So far I have used it four times in a week, and it worked perfect every time. Now I can adjust brake and derailleur cables in a snap of a finger without damaging the cables. Anyone that gives this 4th hand tool a bad rating is simply an incompetent dolt. I am very happy with this Park Tool!!

I struggled for months keeping my front derailleur properly adjusted, with this tool a 30 minute festival of frustration turned into an easy 5 minute job. It's very easy to control cable tension with this tool. So why 4th hand? It may be because it would be nice to have a third hand to hold the cable in the slot before applying tension since the cable tends to pop out frequently just as you start squeezing, but that's a minor quibble.

This is a huge time saver. It is dead simple to use and I consider it to be one of the most essential pieces in my tool kit. Trying to adjust cable tension with out it is a non-starter for me. If you are enthusiastic about doing your own bicycle maintenance, this tool will pay for itself the first time you use it. It is a joy to use and will not pinch your cable and has a catch mechanism to make micro-adjustments easier.

Whether you call it a hand brake, a third hand, or a cable stretcher, the bottom line is that you want it if you do your own bike maintenance. It's what you always wanted for getting tension right on derailleur and brake cables. In particular, it makes getting the right pull on front derailleurs a breeze. It does what it says it can do, and it's study. Another great Park tool.
