I picked up this lens to complement the 20mm F1.7 pancake that was bundled with my GF1. By using a prime (single focal length) lens such as this one, you give up the versatility of a zoom. But in return you end up with a lens that lets in 4 times as much light at 45mm as the Lumix 14-45 kit lens does at 45mm. That goes a long way to improve image quality in dim lighting. The relatively bright aperture of F2.8 also gives you the option of blurring the background, isolating the subject. This Leica branded lens features optical image stabilization for use on Panasonic Micro Four Thirds bodies (Olympus has stabilization built into their camera bodies). There's a convenient focus limiter switch which blocks the lens from focusing in the macro range. This results in increased focusing speeds for non-macro photography.Overall the lens is well designed with good build quality. It's wonderfully compact while delivering sharp and contrasty images with pleasing out of focus areas. This is a macro lens, so it also allows you to explore an aspect of photography not often possible with conventional lenses. It would have gotten a 5 star rating if it had been a faster, F2.0 lens. That would have made the Panasonic Leica 45mm Macro a dream lens. But it's good as it is.

This is an expensive lens but you get your money worth: this is a good lens, sharp, fast, beautiful bokeh, etc. and it will complement nicely the 20mm pancake that ships with the GF1 (they even share the filter thread size). It's also incredibly small (if you compare to a 90mm macro for a DSLR), just slightly larger than the 14-45 kit lens.Built quality is also excellent and I'm sure that the Leica branding has added at least a hundred pound to the price... but that's fair game since there are no alternatives in Micro 4/3 (there are, of course, many other macro lens compatible with the Panasonic GF1 but you have to use adapters and the lenses tend to be much larger...not to mention they won't autofocus).Still for all its qualities, it has one flaws that keeps it aways from the 5 stars: f/2.8 which is not fast enough for the GF1: (1) Panasonic sensor remains quite noisy so the more light the better, (2 the 20mm pancake gathers one and a half times more light so you always have to adjust your settings when you swap lens and (3), given the smaller sensor of Micro 4/3, it's sometimes difficult to blur the background enough, e.g. in portraiture.A good lens with no serious competition for Micro 4/3 cameras but I wish at that price it was f/2.

I like it's compact design & inner focusing, the limiter, the good build quality and not to bad speed of the AF, and that it includes a hood.Really missing is any scale. There is no distance and no macro factor scale, so you have to use/photograph a ruler to get things in scale. Another thing missing is a fitting macro flash system. I've done a self made adapter to mount my Olympus RF-1, using a 46>67mm step up ring + the front element of an olympus FR-1(00), but it's no 100% solution. Maybe a future update 'll get a dual limiter switch, so you can limit it to macro only, too.For me it replaced two (or incl. MMF-2 three) items, the Olympus ZD 50mm and the EX25 extension, and it does a very fine job.Working distance for 1:1 is about 65mm from the lens front, and it doesn't extend, so "models" don't get scared by the outbounding lens.I'm not to sad about the f2 to f2.8 step, as it's not a big loose in macro use. It's no portraiture lens, you better go for m.Zuiko 45mm 1.8 for this job, as it's mutch cheaper, too.

Tried some screw on close up filters as an intro to macro work but soon found that chromatic aberrations could easily ruin a pic. So thought it time to get a macro lens.I use a Lumix GH4 so at first looked at the new Lumix 30mm macro lens which I nearly bought but was put off by how close you needed to get to the subject for 1:1. The Olympus 60mm macro looked good as well but the lens is a little too long and there would be no OIS on a Panny body.Either of these two lenses would be a bargain new given the price and image quality but this Leica 45mm lens looked to be the best option (for me). It is too expensive new (given the other 4/3rds options)however it is a deal breaker second hand - so much easier and more flexible in use than the filters and the image quality is superb whether at normal distances or close up.Read full review...

Tested this hooked up to the Lumix-G2; extraordinary for doing what I bought it for, macro photos & to my surprise, great for portraits too...Just a word to the wise, when you open the package & before it is powered up on your camera, there is a scary "rattle" - this is actually documented in reviews and it stops as soon as power is on (it's the OIS anti shake). It is very unnerving for such an expensive piece of kit with a Leica signature... but heh, panic over, it's a beauty to use !Just for fun, via the wifi link from G6 to ipad I grabbed this breakfast image the aperture is stopped down practically as far as it'd go & with a 20" exposure, all is nice & crisp...I know lots of people like macro shots with bokeh (background blurr)but I don't and so this is just what I was looking for...

This is a lovely lens and opens up a whole world of possibilities. I had been using the 14/140 lens for close-up photographs of wildflowers and while it's a great lens it's not ideally suited. The Leica Elmarit 45 is exactly suited: fast, sharp and easy to use. I read the reviews regarding its slowness to focus, but with the limiter switch on it doesn't seem to me to be a problem. Manual focus is positive and straightforward. On a recent trip to Corsica I found that with OIS engaged, hand-held macro photographs of butterflies were just a matter of patience and stalking, with no technical problems to get in the way. It's also very useful for portraits and street photography, being small and inconspicuous. The lens is a pleasure to use and inspires confidence to push yourself that bit further.

I don't "love" this - but I have been impressed by it. It has a good pedigree (Leica) and so far has lived up to my expectations. If you are considering a micro four third (macro) lens its really worth bearing in mind that the focal lengths don't relate to APSC cameras. So this prime lens has a "real" focal length of about 90mm and is thus quite "telephoto" in nature. I also have a 45 - 175 telephoto and a Leica 25mm lens so have most situations covered. Macro images are crystal sharp (using a tripod and cable or IPhone release) and I have been experimenting with focus stacking which in my opinion adds to its capabilities. Nicely made but lighter than I expected.Whilst it comes with a square Leica-style lens hood - it doesn't come with a pouch to keep it in.

I bought this as a nearly-new used lens, saving myself more than a third - but I certainly believe it's worth its regular Amazon price (although I'd have second thoughts if asked to pay its full RRP!).It's lightweight, well-built and gives sharp 1:1 macro results with a minimum image distance of around 15cm. As a 45mm (35mm equivalent = 90mm) prime, it's also eminently suitable for portraits, giving outstanding bokeh at f/2.8.This focal length overlaps with my Lumix 14-140mm lens, but there's no comparison with the superior quality and sharpness of this fixed prime, which I'll use at every possible opportunity.

This little lightweight lens is amazing, it takes very high detailed pictures, clear with natural colour and so simple to use. I brought it because i'd always wanted to take pics in macro, i have the LUMIX G2 and thought i could never afford the only macro lens to fit my camera but i shopped around and found a fantastic offer on ebay,i prefer to use manual focus but that's just what i'm comfortable with, the auto-focus is excellent and i highly recommend this lens.

Incredibly sharp with excellent shallow depth of field performance. Those who complain about the F2.8 max aperture simply haven't used the lens.So ignore the armchair experts; the characteristics of this macro 90mm (35mm equivalent) lens are simply perfect in the real world. Beautifully rendered, richly drawn portraits with creamy backgrounds as well as amazing 1:1 macro detail.Build quality is excellent too. A perfect companion to the GX1.

25.5.2012

Bought this in Japan and never changed this lens on a GX1 during the 10 day stay. A clear improvement on the standard Panasonic lenses (which are good) and as others have indicated it creates a much better picture. I have both the 45m and 25m Leica lenses and once you adapt to not being able to zoon, its a delight to use both

Really impressed - Was using on another MFT system, but just had a couple of days with it on a GH-4..... AMAZING results :) Really good - f2.8 may seem a little slow, but it's been great for me! Super fast.

2.5.2018

The lightweight of this lens makes it a pleasure to use. Images from it are sharp and clear. Not had too much time to use as yet but looking forward to the flowers coming into bloom.

7.4.2016

This is a lens that's a real pleasure to use. It's got the lot - excellent build quality, wonderfully compact, lightweight, sharp and contrasty images, fast and very pleasing bokeh.

Fantastic lens, incredibly sharp, rattle is a little disconcerting but the build quality seems fantastic anyway. Would recommend this to anyone.TW (113974)
