Got this pack primarily for day hiking, though as I got the black version it sees some day-to-day use as well. The most important factor for me was how it feels walking with a full pack, and I've been very happy. At ~6'1/185cm I went for the M/L version, which fits nicely. Given that the straps can be adjusted with a velcro system, and you have the load adjusters, hip belt and chest strap to play with, getting a good fit isn't too hard. With everything set up, the weight sits nicely on the hips and you barely notice you're wearing the pack. The bag has a main compartment (with a zippable mesh pocket with key ring clip), a second much smaller compartment,a pocket with clip to hang a water reservoir (in between the back foam and the smaller compartment), a bottle holder on either side, and a stretchy stuff pocket on the outside. There are also two small zippable pockets on the hip belt. I find there to be ample space to carry some spare clothes, food, water, camera etc. The various little pockets are also pretty good for keeping your phone or some snacks to hand. Some features I haven't used yet are the bicycle helmet clip on the back and the walking pole holding system, so can't comment on them. Might come in handy one day though!NB: The Talon 22 had a slight update in 2017, the main changes being the switch from foam panels in the back to a more open pattern and the hip belt panels being more smoothly attached to the bag – oh, and the osprey logo on the back has been removed. I only tried the 2016 model briefly so can't say how impactful the changes have been, but I can say the 2017 model feels great!

2017 Osprey Talon Med/Lg (22L): This is the best pack that I have ever owned. It has ample volume for a day hike, even in winter. Previous packs that I have used had several separate compartments, which seemed like an attractive feature at the time, but the single compartment in the Talon allows for much more efficient packing (smaller items can be organized in see-through bags). The stow-on-the-go attachments for hiking poles function perfectly while hiking and the elastic loops on the shoulder straps accommodate a hydration tube, nicely. Best of all, is the suspension system- the pack feels like it's glued to your back when the hip belt is snug. It also effectively transfers part of the load to your hips. For scrambling or cross country skiing, this will make a huge difference. So why do I only give it 4 stars- because nowhere on the website or the information that comes with the pack does it inform you that the suspension system is adjustable! The ability to adjust the distance between the shoulder straps and the hip belt allows a near perfect fit and this is not a common feature that in day-packs. While the Osprey website provides a procedure for selecting the size of the pack, it did not work well for me. The torso length that I measured was 17" and I ordered the wrong size (Sm/Md)- I am 6' tall and the Med/Lg is perfect. The site also lists the maximum hip size22L as 50"- I have a 37" waist and there is only about 5" of strap remaining when the hip belt is snug. The Osprey sales team should fix this.

I've been accused of being a serial backpack shopper/purchaser, but this came to an end when I found the Talon 22. I hike most spring/summer/fall weekends in the Adirondacks. Travel plans usually include a destination where at least one hike is on the agenda ( Newfoundland, Iceland, the Alps and Arizona). This pack has been everywhere and provided ample space to accommodate whatever was needed for each trip and situation- whether cold weather or rain gear. I'm an older/senior, female hiker and appreciate the comfort that the Talon provides. I spent a long time looking for a pack that allowed the ability to reach and replace my Nalgene bottles while on the go without having to remove the pack. This one achieves that readily. the hip pockets are large enough to provide for phones or cameras as well as a few other small items that I like to have readily available while hiking. I usually take it on dayhikes of varying lengths ( 10 to 25 miles) and it serves well in that situation, but has enough space that I could probably use it for an overnight stay as well.

Osprey Packs Talon 22 Backpack is the perfect hiking companion. It's comfortable, offers ample storage, and is great for day hikes. There are plenty of features packed into this backpack, and it carries the quality you expect from Osprey. The pack includes a pole attachment, comfortable carrying straps, an external hydration sleeve, multiple hip belt pockets, zipper access, top loading, helmet attachment, and ample storage. The backpack itself is light and versatile, with great weight distribution across the shoulder straps, as well the hip belt. If you are looking for a backpack to carry everything and work both long trips and short, this unit might do what you need. For extended trips, you might want a larger bag. But in terms of day hikes and trips, this is likely the best backpack available. I'd imagine it can handle longer trips as well. I would mind using this for multiple days. It also holds up well in weather and tough terrain. It's really an awesome backpack.

Bought this for extended cross-country dog walks (3-5 hours / circa 20km range). I have been using it almost daily for about seven weeks now. This pack looks sophisticated, and capable. There are a plethora of pockets and fastenings - I only wish I could find out what they are all for! the pocket for a bladder is great - I put one I already owned inside (CamelBak) and it fits perfectly. I ended up buying the Osprey waterproof cover, and although it's slightly larger than I needed, it fits well and has been used several times - probably necessary in the British climate! The waist straps are well designed and super easy to adjust, and the chest strap whilst thin contains a whistle in the buckle! It's going to get a little dirty on the inside of the waist belt and straps, as for the colour I chose the straps and the mesh are lightly coloured, but this doesn't particularly bother me. Overall I am very pleased with this pack.

One reviewer wrote that reaching water bottles in the side stretch panels was impossible, whereas another said they were easy to reach. I favor the first reviewer's opinion - It's nearly impossible to grab a water bottle while wearing the pack. Granted, I'm 62 years-old and my shoulders aren't particularly flexible. It's not really that much of a problem for me either - I simply ask my hiking partner to help. I've had other packs that are equally difficult, so I won't knock the Talon 22 for this. I appreciate that they provided space for two water bottles and a hydration pack. If you need to hydrate on the go, don't want to take the pack off, and don't have help, you'll probably want to add the hydration pack,or get a water bottle that can hook onto one of the many attachment points on the pack. Great pack! Very well constructed.

This was purchased at my local outdoor store in NJ. I purchased this because I was using an incredibly old pack and couldn't take the stress on my shoulders when mountain biking any longer. I ended up putting much more weight into this pack than in my previous pack, and the difference was night & day. With the addition of this pack, I have increased the distances I can travel exponentially and this has truly made a difference in almost every aspect of my "adventures." I really am so impressed by this company and their dedication to their consumers' comfort and overall happiness in the end. There was definitely a reason why the employee recommended this brand.I am very happy that I decided to spend more than I initially intended to since this has made such a difference for me. I highly recommend this to anyone.

Osprey packs are very popular with many in my hiking groups. I own a larger pack but wanted something smaller for summer and fall dayhikes when you don't need to carry a lot of extra clothing. I've carried 3 liters of water, food, the ten essentials, and rain gear and still have room to spare. I find the water bottle holders tough to reach with the pack on- a common problem with most packs. I was unable to mount a water bottle on the shoulder straps either. Instead I use the WATERFLY Running Belt Waist Bag with Water Bottle Holder around my waste with the bottle mounted on my stomach. That way I can drink frequently without taking the pack off. The pack snugs up well on your back and the ventilated back is really good.Te quality of the pack is a good balance of lightweight and very good quality.

We vacation in the Tetons and Yellowstone almost every year, and we like to hike. We're not mountain climbers or technical climbers, by any means; we just love being on the trail in the mountains. And we decided it was time to get something more specifically designed for hiking, rather than a 30-year-old canvas backpack from college days. This Osprey is awesome! We used it five or six times this summer when we were hiking, and learned something more each time. With more practice, we'll be better at packing it and at putting it on correctly, but I must say already that I was never tired while wearing it, and it was very secure. We were out hiking one day in a steady, if light, drizzle, and it shed most of that water. All in all, we're very happy with this. Thanks, Osprey!

I hemmed and hawed for weeks over which day pack to choose...talk about analysis paralysis. I finally settled on the Osprey Talon 22 and could not be happier. The sheer amount of bells and whistles on this thing - all of which are usable and helpful - cranks the functionality way up. Further, while only a 22 this baby allows you to take advantage of every square millimeter of stowing space. I usually wear this when hiking with my family of four and can carry just about everything we need for a day hike. Finally, access to storage spaces, durability, and comfort are A+; seriously, for this 6' 200 lbs guy this pack is sized perfectly and is very, very comfortable over the long haul.Highly recommended!

I wanted a higher spec rucksack to replace my last one and spent a while researching the various brands and options. Overall very glad I went with this Osprey one. It feels really comfortable on your back even for extended periods, the stitching and fabrics all feel high quality so hopefully worth the extra money it cost, and the red version that I got really looks great too. Only minor quibble would be that the main pocket is pretty thin and deep so if you're putting a few things in it then you need to have a little think about what to put near the bottom as it'll be a hassle getting it out again from down there. That's a fairly minor negative though so I'd still highly recommend it!

I bought this bag because I wanted a lighter bag than I previously had and one that was more comfortable, too. My old bag was the 2015 version of the CamelBak Fourteener. It was a solid bag that did it’s job for four or so years, but I just needed an upgrade. If you are more of a minimalist hiker like I am, look no further than the Osprey Talon 22. It is super lightweight, has all the storage space I need, and is very comfortable. The shoulder straps are way thinner than my previous bag, but so much more comfortable, which speaks to the quality and efficiency of this bag. The only nitpick I have for this bag is that I wish there were more internal pockets for organizational purposes.

I like that is lightweight and compact. Think the back ventilation is a bit disappointing, I still find it quite sweaty and improved ventilation is the reason I went with this model. I have since ordered the Salomon day 20 plus 4 which seems better ventilated as it only contacts with the back in two strips leaving a central channel, it is also lighter and a simpler design. The other thing I find very annoying is that water bottle put in the side pockets fall out and get lost when putting it on the luggage rack or in the taxi boot - other packs have upper fasteners or clips to secure the bottle via the neck /lid. I have lost two bottles in 3 months of owning this pack.

I’ve packed this thing brim full, and still it is so darn comfortable to hike with, yes this is a DAY bag, and only need to carry maybe a few pounds of things (if that) I carry enough for myself and our 4year old, snacks drinks, etc. and I love that it never seemed to become uncomfortable no matter how much was stuffed in. I also use this for traveling, couple days clothes, electronics, hygiene kit, extra shoes, everything just fits as if it’s a never ending 22L of space! absolutely comfy design. And I’m a bigger guy, I’m 6’0” 255lbs, with a 42” waist, and this bag still astounds with its ability to size and resize. Ospreys bags are phenomenal.

Ordered this through amazon warehouse deals for a decent discount. I love Osprey packs and this one should be perfect for commuting or day hikes. The only reason I took a star off is the bag definitely smells like the person that returned the bag, found some dirt smudges on the hip belt and some pine needles stuck in the back mesh. The bag had definitely been used for a little while before it was returned. As long as I can stand the smell or it starts to smell like me as I use it I will be happy. It's going to get used/dirty anyways and Osprey has an amazing warranty if I have any issues with it.
