Even though it's a good decade old this game still gets an occasional run on my PC. The graphics may look a bit flat and the character's faces somewhat blocky, but it looks good enough. What is more important is the gameplay and this still stands the test of time. Set on a fictional group of islands invaded in 1985 by some Russians, you take on various roles, primarily that of an infantryman who is no more than an order-obeying grunt at the start. Realisim is the name of this game - get shot in the leg and you're crawling along on your belly, desperately looking for a medic. Get shot in the head and it's back to the last checkpoint. Ditto if you try and take on just a half-dozen enemy on your lonesome. You only get one save per mission, except for the checkpoints, which are quite well spaced apart. There is no day/night cycle in this game, that was not quite par for games back in 2001, and the weather effects can be a bit weak, such as the rain. But otherwise there is a lot of realism here, such as the fact that sound takes some time to travel. For example, you can plant a ton of explosives in an enemy base, run a mile up the hill and hit the detonator, and you'll see the enormous flash of an explosion but not hear the thunderous boom for another couple of seconds. You do get to be a tank commander and helicopter pilot, and I must admit I didn't enjoy these parts as much as the infantry/cover-ops missions. Flying planes and helicopters did feel pretty awkward.Missions are not necessarily open, in that you can't complete your objectives in a variety of ways, but the vast expanse of land open to you do give you decent opportunities to outflank the enemy (or even run to the hills - literally!) The entire islands are open to you to, so if you don't like the look of those enemy troops at the roadblock and don't fancy your chances sniping them from a distance, feel free to spend half-an-hour hiking through the nearby woods and creeping up behind them, guns blazing. The storyline is okay too, and kind of fits in with the 1980s theme in that it makes me think of the cheesy Soviet-bating action movies of that Chuck-Norris-filled decade. The mission editor is worth mentioning. I've tried making levels for various games but it can be a chore building them from scratch. In Operation Flashpoint you have a ready-made island and simply place your troops and tanks and bunkers where you want, then jump in. There are tools for the advanced level editor, such as waypoints and triggers and such things. But even a novice to the world of mission editing will find themselves able to create decent ambush or defend missions to play about with. This is a truly great game that has consumed hundreds of hours of time and, though its graphics may look dodgy to young gamers today, it's worth playing. It's certainly better than

I have been playing this game in its many forms for at least 5 years.Thats right 5 years! So lets look at the pros and cons.Firstly the difficulty levels can seem insane this led me to abandon the game at first. One day I returned to it and have been hooked ever since. It requires patience and will reward you with hours of fun.The game is a simulation of tank infantry and air combat, set in the 1980's it concentrates on open terrain warfare it has huge maps and buildings not all of them can be entered unfortunately. Many can but suffer from one of the other game defects which is clipping problems in doorways and steps also the AI troops can struggle to enter buildings. Now for the GREAT things about this game. The mission builder is the best period and so easy to use its unbelievably good its worth a full price new game just for the editor! The Goty edition from mastertronic with the pc gamer logo on the front is the best as it contains all the official campaigns (Three), Addons and patches. There are also some magnificent mods still available .The best include ww2 vietnam etc.. the finmod and libmod stand out paticularly but others cover modern combat in the desert and in tropical jungles in fact there are too many to mention the quality of most of them is way above any of the mainstream game mods.So if you want to fly attack choppers drive tanks have realistic gunbattles with decent ai (they flank and take cover!) and command a platoon with a decent command system. Then this is the game for you .Graphically if you have a powerful computer this game still looks breathtaking, sunrise in the mountains seen from the back of a special ops chooper is A BEAUTY TO BEHOLD .IT isnt GTA or Doom and more often than not people giving bad reviews do so from Ignorance. They do have a right to there opinion but my opinion and that of over a million (sales) others is BUY IT YOU WONT REGRET IT.

Flashpoint is a game that everyone should own. It really is as stunning as the reviews say it is. Even 6+ years after release this is a game I return to again and again. Why?The feeling it has is quite timeless. Sure other games have better graphics, more polygons, more realistic 'looking' environments, but none have yet come close to the immersive feeling that Flashpoint gives. The whole world has a definite 'flavour' which all works together as if it is real. The trick is actually on your mind - it all simply 'feels' so right that your brain simply accepts it's real and lets you go.The end result for me has been that while walking in the real world countryside I'm frequently reminded of Flashpoint, and long for the freedom it offers to go over and stand right atop that hill I can see in the distance. (If you are geographically inclined you'll love the map and compass navigation opportunities Flashpoint offers)Part of the magic is Flashpoint's total freedom. Sure you could blast your way into that town, but you could wonder over to that mountain and explore another town. Or pop off to a previously invaded base to hop in a chopper and attack from the air. Or perhaps send your men to encircle the base and orchestrate an attack from a vantage point. Or perhaps you might just sit down and wait till night-time (after enjoying a beautiful sunset) and, using the real stars and moon to navigate, infiltrate silently under the cover of darkness.Nothing comes close to the realism of Flashpoint. After being thrown into the thick of it during the campaign (a seriously scary experience) you'll pretty soon realise that you have men under your command and damn you'll be gutted every time you loose one.

Thinking of buying this game? There is nothing that can prepare you for it, and if you give it the patience it deserves you will see that it is indeed a very good game. Dieing is very easy and die you will. Many times. It takes a long time to master and no mission unfolds the same way twice. The Graphics arent really something to scream and shout about. But that doesn't matter cause as soon as the enemy spots you and the bullets start flying its so easy to get 100% immersed that graphics fly out your head and it does make you feel like you are fighting for your life. Mainly because of its realism. One bullet can, and generally will ruin your day. You'll spend alot of time on your belly crawling about, and let face it who doesnt in a war.Its so real. If you see a group of enemy soldiers in a town and think "Right im gonna run in the with automatic on, nail them all, rescue the girl and carry her off smoking a cuban" you can forget it, the running into the town will momenterily make aiming vertually impossible, and as soon as they see you you get a highly acurate salvo of lead. Its another thing that makes this game so good. One on one with an enemy soldier is purely a 50 50 chance of survival. You WILL need tactics and often more men.Which leads me to say that this game is the PERFECT game for military fanatics who enjoy realistic team based gaming online. Nothing comes close. There are an endless about of clans that use the thousands of mods available, including the entire British army and dozens of others. This game is definatly a 10 out of 10. And as for the mission editor, well i wont go into it but put it this way. Want to make your own war game with hardly any limitations? feel free.

This is an amazing game, you acn fly, drive, walk (and with the help of the huge addon community) swim. It is spectacular in realism you get shot you die and with addons now you can bleed, your aim gets worse when your hit or after sprinting your legs can get broken and you have to crawl to safety. Its downfall is collision physics and at points the AI can be a real downer, sometimes AI wont do what they're told or run into enemy fire and youve got to beware of collision phyiscs you may hit buildings etc if your aiming too close to them but not at them. The Campaign really teachs you how to play and if you get in with the right gaming community you can have some truly amazing games,Past all the bugs this is a solid game, huge replay value, even now near the release of Elite, OFP 2 and Armed Assualt the community is roaring, the games graphics can be modified to include glare reflections etc more realistic troops, and complete changes on the sound packs give the game a truely spectacular feel. MP is ok but best using Gamespy and even better if you join one of the communitys. Coop, Tdm, Dm, Ctf, Capture the Island and many more Online modes.Top game in my opinion, if your computer can handle the new addons even better. 9/10

OK, put quite simply: this really is the best game ever made!I have been playing games since i was knee high, now 26 i still get a childish 'buzz' about this game, it is SUPERB!But you can make this already perfect game, even better!!!Search the web and find:'ECP REDUX' replaces almost everything in the game with high resolution models and textures = fantastic graphics.ECP REDUX also improves playability. AI are very clever and offers visual effects too like better explosions = fantastic playability.Another mod worth checking out is 'FFUR 2007' Modern warefare. New troops, weapons, vehicles, loads of new special effects = fantastic modern flavor of this stunning game.Enjoy !!!!!!

Operation Flashpoint is a game changer. This title spawned the whole ARMA series and if you are a fan of that series then you need to take a look at this game to see where it all began. This game came out in an era that was full of potential and there is no doubt that this title or its offspring is still having an impact on titles today. SQUAD for example launched recently on steam and that's pretty much OPF or ARMA. Its good to know games like this still live on.Check it out, Graphics were good at the time but poor by today's standards. That being said you still needed a beast of a machine to play it back then.

I played the first episode a long time ago and enjoyed it very much.I just bought this bundle and it has been a long time that I have enjoyed a game so much. The missions are usually long an difficult, and the fact that you can only save once per mission creates a very intense tension: you never know if an ennemy is not hiding near you just waiting to shoot.I played ArmaII but the missions are not so well designed as in this game.Of course, the graphics are somewhat outdated, but it does not hurt the gameplay.

This is a game I bought in 2001 as part of a twin pack with Insane (driving game) and I was silly enough to think I wouldnt actually play flashpoint to begin with. Its now 2008 and its still my favourite game because no other game gives you as many options much this game.Totally brilliant, brilliant feel, great music, quality. Rated 90% by pc gamer, it should have been more like 95% I feel.

25.10.2008

I gave it five stars because im taking the other reviewers word for it that its a great game because i dont have the time to invest in a game with such dated graphics. I didnt know of this game when i bought it and went by the release date stated for this game of the year version being 2005, the game was released in 2001 so the graphics are ancient beware.

this is the first military sim of the colection op flash and arma.whatever you do in a mission impacts the next : sory like and numeric as well.there one particular mission where you get stranded - I loved being behind the lines, had a field day instead of running.

8.9.2013

This game will attract those who want a realistic tactical challenge and can accept dated graphics. Given the price, highly recommended.
