I wasnt expecting too much when I first bought this knife. I have heard that many people enjoy the Ontario RAT knives, but I tend to want slightly smaller knives due to a combination of different things, including having smaller hands than most, and I also prefer having a very light knife that you just forget about in your pocket.I must say, I am thoroughly impressed by this knife. For about $26USD, you get a knife that I would gladly pay 2x or maybe 3x for. This blade is made in Taiwan, NOT CHINA, there is a world of difference between China and Taiwan. For Chinese blades, you can expect poor QC or bad craftsmanship due to the low skill workers they tend to employ. On the other hand,Taiwan has a much more skilled workforce, and has proper QC (if you want more proof, Taiwanese Spydercos are some of their best, and you might recognize a couple high quality Taiwanese tech companies like HTC and ASUS).Steel: AUS8, good solid quality Japanese steel, the treatment of the steel seems more than good, holds a very nice edge for quite a while.Handle: Nylon Scales, not bad, provides more than enough grip for everyday chores, the shape of the handle is very nice and ergonomic, a comfortable knife to hold for someone with small hands.Lock: Liner lock, its as solid as a standard liner lock can be. Easy to actuate, and is out of the way, so it will be hard to accidentally disengage.Opening: non-assisted ambi thumb studs. The action of the knife is surprisingly smooth. It takes a couple minutes to learn how to open a non-assisted thumb stud knife, once you learn it, it will fly open just as fast and smooth as an assisted knife. The only thing I have to somewhat complain about is the blade shape. The blade curves upward very quickly when it gets near the tip, giving it a nice belly, but I personally prefer blades with only a slight belly. Im more of a fan of wharncliffe style or other flatter blade shapes due to the fact that I prefer having a fine tip on my blades. That is more of a personal complaint, and does not have anything to do with how good the actual knife performs.Another note, apparently, Randal, the designer of this knife cut all ties with Ontario Knife Company and is working with other companies now (he recently worked with ESEE on a knife with his name on it), so Ontario is likely going to no longer print the RAT logo on the blades for future batches, and they are changing the name to the "Model II" instead of the "RAT II".If you are looking for a small EDC of about 3" and you dont want to spend an extravagant amount, and you dont care about bells and whistles, then the RAT II is what you are looking for. It is simple, reliable, and very good quality. You really cant beat the value of this being $26USD.A sidenote, what I would like to see, is a slightly less pronounced belly, pull back the start of the belly a bit to get a finer tip, then make the blade out of S30V, polish that blade to a mirror finish, skeletonize the liners and possibly use titanium instead of steel, then put some G10 or micarta scales on that baby, you would have yourself one hell of a winner for a higher-end EDC.

I admit, I have a problem when it comes to knives. I just recently started collecting them and I'm not knife expert but I've done lots of research and have purchased a few. My post expensive is not an EDC knife but I think if you're willing to pay over $80 for a knife you have an issue and I did spend that much on a knife LOLThis knife, to me, wasn't as great as everyone made it seem. After much research and actually having purchased a D2 steel knife, I can tell you that D2 sharpens better than AUS-8. I have attached a picture comparing this knife to my EDC knife which is made by Albatross. That knife in my opinion is much better because of the D2 steel, and G10 handle. It is slightly, very slightly heavier than this Ontario knife and feels sturdier and a bit higher quality but that has to be the G10 handle material. In my hand the Ontario felt cheaper. Don't get me wrong it's a great knife, but it's going back as it cannot replace my albatross. After having sharpened my albatross today, it's on par with a brand new Ontario RAT which says something about D2 steel. I know I'm making it sound like D2 steel is the best ever but in compared to AUS-8 do some research and you'll find that it does retain an edge better.I also own a few kershaws, a few CRKT knives, one buck knife but again I go back to my albatross because it's super lightweight compared to my other knives. I have a kershaw cryo that I feel might be the pocket knife I own that best sharpens for a knife under $50 but not by much. One thing the RAT beats most knives at the price point is the 4 position clip system they added to it. I was used to having the blade point down but it is better to have it point up because it makes opening of the knife faster. The albatross only has one position but luckily it's in the blade up position.Last but not least, I did not like that the RAT doesn't have an assisted open like all the other knives I own. It does open smoothly and I read it only gets smoother over time but it still can't beat an assisted open on my opinion. Good knife, but not as great as I wanted it to be.

The knife came sharp enough to shave the back of my hand. The packaging was simple to get into. I used it to open a plastic clamshell of something else that arrived that day, to slice some food and to open mail. It was still utility sharp after those activities, but not sharp enough to shave the back of my hand. I was able to sharpen it to shaving sharp with a Spyderco Sharpmaker in about a minute.Comparing it to my other EDC knives, it was almost as easy to deploy as my assisted opening Kershaw Leeks. I was very impressed. It was easier to open than my Spyderco Delica. Unfortunately, it was much more difficult to close than any of my other knives. The liner lock is very, very stiff, with 2 points of resistance, the initial point, and then another point about 1/3 of the way closed. I have a callous on my thumb and it actually tore the callous closing it. Because of that, It is going to sit on a shelf for a while until my thumb heals. Maybe it will become easier to close after it is broken in.My impressions are still very favorable for a < $30 knife. It looks like it deserves the reputation as a budget EDC that you see on the knife websites and forums.June 2017 update.I am carrying this more than my two Kershaw Leeks and my Spyderco Delica.. It is almost as easy to open as the Leeks which are assisted opening knives. It sharpens easier than any of the others and I believe holds an edge just as well. I have used it to cut cardboard and small branches Including some, light chopping. It is still as tight as the day I bought it

I purchased this for $23.99 new. Out of the box the knife was hair shaving sharp. I've only ever had Kershaws with flippers and Spydercos with the spyder holes. Thumbstuds are new thing for me. At first I was having difficultly flicking it open as fast as the youtube videos show. After about 15 mins of practice I found the way to flick it open very quickly. In fact it deploys much faster than the Kershaw Clash with Speedsafe that I have. What's nice is that I don't always have to do the super fast flick especially when out in public. With the Kershaw I had no choice and it sometimes got odd looks when it deployed with the satisfying, but loud *clack*.This is one helluva knife especially with it being under $25.Very sharp (already mentioned), smooth and very fast (if needed) deployment, tight lockup with no play, and blade is nearly centered. Clip is tight and I won't have to worry about losing it. It's very comfortable in my hand.. Oh and I really like the open back design. The Rat 2 comes tip down standard, though I always carry tip up since I find that I have less steps between removing from my pocket and deploying. I'll try tip down and see how it goes.If there's a negative I'd have to say that the handles are relatively slick. I've been carrying a Spyderco Delica and Dragonfly(both FRN handles) and those have a lot of grip. Rat 2 not so much, but I don't find it an issue. I think I just got to used to having a super grip with the FRN handles. So there you go. Inexpensive but excellent quality. Go and get it already.

Excellent build quality, nice brass bushings that hold blade... No blade wiggle and super fast deployment. Friend asked if our was a auto assisted knife... I said ,"nope!" Its that smooth. Now my Benchmades ,Spyderco's, CKRT, Boker's, Camillus, Ontario, Victorinox and Condor(Rodan) have nice blade steels and depending on their use you get hard or soft. This RAT 2 is like a Benchmade body with a Spyderco Blade. Built really well. Basically tight body, smooth opening blade at a great price. Pick one up with confidence as an EDC defensive blade, compliment your survival get home kit or just get one cause if you want a high quality blade that if it got lost..you didn't lose your high end folder you won't fret. This is getting long winded. Yup. Listen you can cut with scissors, attack with dollar store box cutters, or use water bottles to hurt attackers so the $$$$ knife isn't any better than carrying this knife. This knife WILL be perfect in the case you can't egress out if a bad situation where you may not have another tool. I'm trusting it to be just perfect for combative defense or opening up the mail.Experience in case you wanted to verify why I think what I do about this blade: Army Veteran, Survival trained, Police trained triangle combatives(Jared Wihongi), former Assistant Instructor M.O.U.T , combat pistol competitor, Krav maga, Kali Silat and Aikido... And I can make a great breakfast... seriously..add cinnamon to eggs...you'll thank me later.

I was looking to replace my junk folder with a dependable small folder/pocket knife.... and this is it. The knife came hair-cutting sharp (literally), right out of the box. It flips open very easily with a light action of the thumb and has a clip as well, if you choose to attach it to your pocket. It's small enough to be tossed in your pocket without using the clip, which is my preferred method. This is also excellent to be carried in any small purse, bag or EDC bag. Understand, this is a small, folding pocket knife that you would not use to baton wood, put through extreme abuse, or replace your primary full tang survival knife or cutting tool. You can attain massive sparks from a ferro rod on the spine and the small finger choil comes in handy when using it for small woodworking projects or processing game. For the quality, cost and versatility of this little blade., I will probably order another one.... or two. Some measurements and specs I took are:AUS-8 Steel (satin finish/NO black coating on this option)Full Flat GrindOverall Unfolded and Open Length: 7"Closed: 4"Blade: 3"Closed Width: 1"Closed Thickness with Clip: 1/2" (in your pocket)If anyone is on the fence or is researching on whether or not this is the right knife for your need, hopefully my review helps you in your decision... as I am a total research and analytical junky when it comes to my purchase decision making!!!

It's a VERY high quality knife for the price point , very good useable shape & size blade for EDC . I did a lot of research on this knife before I bought it , & there was a lot of hype surrounding it which I really do believe it lives up to . When I got the knife it worked quite well , but being a perfectionist I wanted to see how much I could improve the action by loosening the pivot screw . I would alternately loosen the screw and check for blade play , I figured I'd stop when I started to get some play but that didn't happen & to my amazement I realized that I had almost completely removed the screw from the pivot pin , yet there was absolutely NO blade play . Up , down side to side Nada .Now THAT is a sign of a really well built knife ! I'm convinced that I could remove the screw from the pivot pin altogether & it would continue to function perfectly . If i were to complain about anything it would be that it seems a little heavy for a knife of it's size & it might be a little easier to flip it open if they bevelled the area of the scale next to the thumb stud . Not that it doesn't flip open lightning fast already , but it would be an easy improvement . You could actually do it with a half round file . But if you are looking for a reliable Knife at this price point , you just can't go wrong here . This knife will last forever ! $30.00 !!! un -believeable quality at this price point .

I have to say, I loved this knife as soon as I received it. In terms of fit, ergonomics and mechanisms, they really got this right. It opens incredibly easily with one hand and closes just as easily. I can open it as fast as my SOG spring assisted Flash II. I had hoped it would be a good EDC - and it is in heavier pants (jeans). Unfortunately, it's a little too long and too thick for dress pants - you will have a very visible, oblong bulge. Fortunately not in a location where it could be mistaken for something else - but still. If you're in a corporate office and you're working with folks who probably do not carry any kind of knife, you don't want this thing sticking out on your thigh. As an aside,my all time favorite inexpensive EDC for work was the Gerber LST II (not the regular LST). It opened fast with a thumb stud, had soft rounded edges and fit well in my hand. It was light. I could open it in my pocket or quickly as I pulled it out. I don't know why Gerber discontinued it and kept the LST and LST ultralight which to my mind are stiff and hard-edged and uncomfortable .I will definitely keep it because the action is just superb. I can't really criticize it for not being what I want it to be. Just wish they could clone it in a slightly smaller, slightly more rounded and slightly thinner version. But for the price, this is an amazing buy.

I now have 7 of these Ontario knives.3 full size model 1's including one D2 steel bladed model from Knife Works, 3 model 2's and a utilitac. Every one has been exceptionally well made. Every one has had a perfect finish, had perfectly centered blades, buttery smooth actions with solid secure lockup and every one has a screaming sharp edge.EVERY one! Thats an impressive track record in my mind and shows that Ontario knife company has effective quality control procedures and cares about their products. I cannot recommend these knives enough. They are without a doubt the best, most capable and versatile knives you can buy under $40 and compare favorably with some other knives in the $50-$100 range. If your thinking the model 2 is too small, dont sweat it.This thing is great, can do just about anything you might need it to, does it without taking up much pocket space and weighs next to nothing. It fits my large hands very nicely and is every bit the workhorse the larger model 1 is. And if your looking for a knife for your wife/gf look no further. I bought 2 for my gf and her mother and they love them. Theyve both learned to use them very effectively. And they love the pink handles.Excellent, EXCELLENT knives and extremely highly recommended. See my other reviews of the pink model 2,model 1 and utilitac if you want details.

I started Amazon shopping for a new knife when my beloved SOG Flash II went missing. I had never heard of Ontario prior to then. I bought this knife based on curiosity from the almost uniformly positive reviews. Here is my impression:Materials: Adequate, but definitely not exceptional.Size: a little on the small side, but almost exactly what I wanted for a utilitarian EDC.Weight: Great. 2.8 oz on my electronic scale.Blade: Sharp, but a little thin.Assembly: It appears VERY well put together for the cost. No rough edges. No blemishes.Function: Very good. The hinge is smooth and the blade feels solid when open and locks without play. That being said, it is not the easiest knife for me to open, probably due to it's smallish size and light weight. My guess is that the Rat 1 would be superior in that area due to it's larger size.Summary: It's a well made knife with satisfactory but not exceptional materials. If the blade were thicker, I would give it 5 stars for the price. It will be my new around-town EDC because potential wear and damage (or loss!) from every day utility use won't break my heart (or my wallet!). If I'm heading to the backcountry or expect serious work, I'll take one of my other knives.(Pictured right to left: Spyderco Delica, Rat 2, CRKT Ignotor-T, Gerber EZ-Out, SOG Flash II)

I ordered this knife on Jan. 3 and received it on Jan. 8. Came very quick even though I ordered it during the weekend. I was originally going to buy a Kershaw, as I have had good luck with them in the past and usually I am not interested in trying new things if the item I use already works. But I found this knife to be a few dollars cheaper than the Kershaw I wanted and have heard good things about it. My buddy has the Rat I and II and has told me good things about them so I decided I might as well give it a try. First of all, the knife came very sharp out of the box, I absolutely hate when I buy a knife and have to pull out my sharpening set to sharpen it. I also noticed this knife is very sturdy, most pocket knifes usually have a "wiggle" to the blade and for some reason that really gets my OCD going. The next thing I noticed is that the top of the blade it squared off very nice, which is exactly what I was hoping for when I ordered it, it allows you to be able to use it to strike you ferro rod if you lose the striker without having to use the blade. Needless to say I am happy with this purchase and this will be my everyday carry knife. I am also considering getting the Rat I for my bug out bag. I gave this knife four stars, as I get more use out of it I will update this review accordingly.

I EDC this blade more than any other model that I own. It is much lighter than the RAT 1. I am a fan of high performance knives that carry a low price point. I have listed every knife that I own below along with the blade steel for comparison. This stays in my pocket more than any of the others due to: solid lock-up, good steel, light weight, small size, and comfortable ergonomics. Other than S30V and VG10, AUS8 is my favorite blade steel.Spyderco Delica - VG10Spyderco Honeybee SS - 3crLeatherman Wingman - 420hcGlock Field Knife - HRC55 Spring SteelMora Military - Carbon SteelMora Utility - Carbon SteelByrd Cara Cara 2 - 8cr13movKershaw Cryo Speedsafe - 8cr13movKershaw Volt 2 - 8cr13movKershawChill - 8cr13movByrd Meadowlark 2 - 8cr13movKa Bar Dozier - AUS8ASpyderco Tenacious - 8cr13movOntario RAT 1 - AUS8Kershaw Blur - S30VKershaw Scallion - 420hcOntario RAT 2 - AUS8Other than the Kershaw Blur in S30V, this is my favorite knife. Due to the Kershaw being much more expensive, I tend to not carry it as often. That being said, the Kershaw Blue S30V is one of the cheapest S30V blades available. S30V is a superior steel that carries a higher price tag.The Ontario RAT 2 is an excellent blade that I would HIGHLY suggest purchasing for just about any use. I own 2 of them.

This is a great knife with a LOT of things going for it. The fit and finish is very good, especially at its price point (under $25!). Blade came adequately sharp and perfectly centered. Detent on the blade is pleasantly strong and it takes some good thumb stud pressure to deploy the blade. The knife shows its balance during blade deployment as it will swing to a firm, great sounding lockup. The Rat II feels great in hand, the nylon scales are almost soft feeling. They are not overly grippy, but this not a concern with the deep index finger groove to keep the knife securely in your grip during use. The 3 inch blade with a good belly is, in my opinion, the perfect size and shape for EDC use and tasks. The liner lock is easy to release and the knife can be safely closed with one hand. I have not been a fan of many liner lock knives because of the tendency of the pivot screw to loosen after several openings causing all kinds of problems. This is not a problem with the Rat II. This knife has some seriously thick bushings sandwiching the blade inside the liners. Opening and closing the knife (hundreds of times so far) hasn't loosened the pivot screw tension at all! I haven't been dissatisfied with this knife in any way. Highly recommended!

I got this knife because I wanted a knife I could open with one hand that had a good utilitarian shaped blade like a sodbuster. The knife has a good solid feel to it both opened and closed. Has excellent fit and finish. Opens and closes easily and came extremely sharp. The clip engages my pocket easily, holds firmly, but I can still pull the knife from my pocket without difficulty using one hand. The clip can be moved for left or right hand, tip up or tip down carry. It came right hand tip down carry, but I changed it to right hand tip up carry since that's what I'm accustomed to (which has the nice side effect of giving my fingers better purchase when opening the knife). The knife rides lower in your pocket if you use tip down rather than tip up (if that matters to you).I normally do not like thumb studs since they often catch on the edge of my pocket, but I have not had that experience with this knife in the weeks that I've carried it.I am very satisfied with this knife. It has, thus far, proven to be a very solid and useful knife and it's priced inexpensively so I'm not afraid to treat it roughly. I totally recommend this knife if you're looking for a dependable beater knife to carry in your pocket.

I was wondering what to get my niece for Christmas and I stumbled on the idea of getting her a pocket knife.I bought for myself the RAT I a couple of weeks before, and I really like it. So when I was looking for a gift for a girl who enjoys camping, has smaller hands than I do, I took a look at the RAT II. I didn't just click on the first knife I saw, but I did the same kind of research for it as I did for my own, and then some.It is almost exactly half the weight of the RAT I and the blade is about one third shorter. However everything is the same, albeit smaller. The handle still has the same good grip, with the blade, at the handle, going up a little and having the rounded serrations for the user to put their thumb on it,allowing them to better control the knife, without hurting the thumb. There is a choil, I think it's called, on teh underside of the handle that is placed about 15mm from the blade, preventing the hand from slipping off the handle and onto the blade. The blade point is not quiet a drop point, but sturdy none-the-less, and comes out of the box being decently sharp.Overall the knife is a very good all-round starter knife, whether for camping or just as an EDC.
