I've had this lock since summer 2016 though to be fair I've got two bikes of different values so I use 4 different locks. Two including this lock and an Abus lock on my more expensive bike when I'm out, a different Onguard scooter lock with my more expensive bike in my shed and a fourth lock, MasterLock, for my cheaper station bike. This lock is clearly marked as Sold Secure Gold on the actual lock. The lock is smooth and well made. If the lock your receive doesn't fit both of these criteria then it is not an original. I should add none of the bike locks I have from different manufacturers feel rough from new.Like all the bike locks I have from Onguard,Abus and Masterlock it is is impossible to lock this lock up without using the key. One of the keys you receive in the bundle should have a light on it but to be honest I use one of my front bike lights when locking/unlocking it and the other lock I use if it is dark, so I can't tell you how useful it is.Unlike the other posters I've been lucky and not have had problems with the barrel getting stiff after months of use. This is probably due to the fact that the bike I use this lock on tends not to be left outside unattended for more than a few hours. Therefore I rightly cannot say what the durability of this lock is if left to the British elements for months. The main issues with the lock are:1. That while it is a large D-lock it only works on standard bike racks. If you are locking the bike properly - by which I mean through the frame and back wheel* - to a lamp post or non-standard bike rack the lock will not fit. In my case as I use a Abus cable lock as well so I can always lock both my wheels and frame up. (I do have a cable to lock my saddle but actually haven't used it.)2. The lock is heavy. I actually carry the lock in my rucksack and I can feel the weight difference with it in and out. Due to being female and the bike I use it on not having a horizontal cross bar, there is no way for me to fit it to the frame if I want a water bottle. I suppose I could bungee cord it to the pannier rack to carry it on my bike but I really can't be bothered. Either way I've not used the flimsy looking bits of plastic that come with the lock to attach it to the frame.I should add if you have quick release wheels and are locking it to a standard bike rack, then the lock is big enough for you to take the front wheel off, put it against the back wheel and lock both wheels plus the frame filling the entire lock. I don't tend to this as it is a hassle.Does this lock work? The only time someone has attempted to steal my bike I hadn't secured my front wheel with the Abus chain lock and so they undid my front wheel. Oddly they didn't steal it so either someone disturbed them, or they realise that nicking the wheel without the bike was pointless and this lock worked as a deterrent. In regards to bike thieves - if the thief is determined and your bike is worth it they will break through any lock and no one is going to argue with someone with an angle grinder. Anyway if you lock your bike properly and use two different types of lock to lock the frame and each wheel, whether you have quick release wheels or not, unless the thieves have plenty of time not to be seen so identified they won't steal your bike when locked. This doesn't mean they won't use other tactics to get the bike off you but that is an entire different matter and one reason why I have a station bike.*If you don't know how to lock your bike so it makes it harder for thieves to steal there are plenty of videos on YouTube from different UK police forces plus cycling organisations and individuals who work in the bike trade in the UK and North America. 80-90% of the bikes I see locked up are locked up poorly which actually helps you if you lock your bike up properly.

Great lock. This is a strong good lock with plenty of weight in both the shackle and the bar to give it strength. The shackle is long enough to go through two bike frames if they are either side of a bike stand or alternatively pushed close together. The locking mechanism is very robust, when the key turns two metal rods grip eachside of the shackle ends (with in the bar) making it very securely held in place. You are provided not only with a key which lights up to ease the struggle of unlocking your bike on dark nights but with several other spare keys to make sure that you aren't stuck should your original key do a disappearing act,or if you want to spread them about several sets of keys. The lock is gold standard which several insurance companies require and is the cheapest I have seen in this category.I bought this lock for my 10 year old to use when he takes his bike out and he manages to use this with an additional cable perfectly well- that has got to prove just how easy it is to use.We have not had any problems with the locking elements in the barrel coming out of line, which is not something I can say about our masterlock lock or our 2 kryptonite locks. It looks the part ( very similar to the kyrptonite range I think ) and makes it very obvious that your bike is locked up with a big strong lock to the passing pond life who will try to relieve you of your bike.I would have liked a cable with the lock, but bought one for around a fiver from a DIY shop that was a lot thicker and better than any bike lock manufacturers cables and for this price you are already getting a lot of lock for your money so I am not complaining about having to do so.I can not say if anyone has tried to steal the bike, only that we have left it locked up with this lock and DIY store cable combination plenty of times and have always come back to the bike, what has happened in our absence I do not know maybe someone tried their luck, maybe they didn't.

Very hefty, solid lock. It looks quite nice too. One small problem is that the thick base plate part is so chunky that if I mount it on the saddle, it gets in the way of my thigh when pedalling. I've had to move it down to the main frame of the bike, and there is pretty much only one option in terms of positioning where it won't rub against my legs, so the placement is not very customizable for my bike anyway.I haven't had any problems with the lock sticking as yet in the few months I've owned it. I sprayed a bit of silicone oil into the lock when I first received it. The size is perfect for going through the frame and wheel of the bike and around a signpost. Not much wiggle room left after that. The smaller version would have been too small, and the longer version should be good for 2 bikes or for locking your bike to a lamppost. I pair this with a kryptonite 7' cable to secure my front wheel and saddle as well. The 4' cable would have been far too short for this. One other thing that annoys me is the quick release. The part of it which clamps onto the U lock and allows you to attach it to your bike always works loose so when I try to just snap it in place, the attachment just slips and rotates and doesn't lock in place. I have to hold the latch open and slot the attachment into place which is a bit of a hassle and could have been avoided with better design. I'll probably just epoxy the attachment to the U lock at some point to avoid this.

Bought this for my girlfriends new bike, she didn't want anything huge, but it had to be secure enough to give her some peace of mind. The lock itself is nice, almost as good as an Abus U-mini I have in terms of how well-built it feels. The locking section does seem a bit big though, but overall it works very smoothly and the shackle is thick enough to deter opportunistic thieves without being overly heavy. The key doesn't operate as smoothly as the Abus, but it seems good enough. The cable seems decent as well, not overly long so it's easy to carry and again thick enough to give you some confidence.Overall it's fairly weighty compared to cheaper, less secure locks but for the price this is a very good combination of high security and reasonably low weight. The small size of the shackle also makes this slightly more secure than longer locks (see[...] for how to use it properly). The mount for the bicycle is also excellent. My girlfriends frame is a little weird, so we had to mount it under the seat, but it tucks away underneath very easily and the mechanism is very secure, easy to attach and easy to put the lock into.An excellent lock to go for to keep your bike safe when you're out and about! Don't rely on a crappy cable lock to keep it safe.

I bought this lock in November 2014 and have used it ever since. It's a fantastic lock. Though I leave my bike outside every night, it has never been tampered with. I can't attest to how well it would resist an attempt but I think it certainly puts off any would-be thieves. The length is perfect, and only very very seldom I struggle to attach it to something secure. The shorter the lock - such as this - the better it's able to withstand attacks. The bracket is very secure once properly attached and the means by which you attach and release the lock from the bracket is very quick and easy. The keys fit into the barrel in either direction for convenience and the action is nice and smooth. After about 2 years of being left out every night, the locking mechanism began to get a little stiff but was quickly remedied by using some graphite powder. The bracket also showed signs of stress when I went to transfer it to a new bike after 3 years but Onguard quickly sent me out a new bracket totally free of charge. I can't recommend this lock enough and the company that produces it. Excellent all around.I can't comment on the cable element as I've never had to use it but if it's anything like the actual lock then it'll be fantastic.

Makes for a perfect second U-lock for me and my needs! Might be a bit on the small side to properly lock a bike through the rear triangle and wheel so please take this into account if you want this for you're main lock and want to lock you're bike properly. The standard size of this lock will be you're choice if that's the case!Having had a bike stolen recently, this time around I wanted to do things properly. I use this to lock my front wheel to my frame in conjunction with a OnGuard Brute to secure my bike and rear wheel. The cable is perfect for connecting both locks and keeping my saddle tied down. I now feel a lot more confident about leaving my bike around town.As for the lock, really nice build quality, hefty but without the weight of my Brute. Love the look On-Guard have gone for in the newer locks. Really stands out and makes a statement to any wandering eyes. I personally throw my locks in my bag when I take them with me so can't comment about the mounting bracket but seems hefty enough. The LED light key is another lovely touch and there's plenty more conventional keys includedSold secure gold rating for a product 1/3 the price of the competition...Buy with confidence!

We just bought two ebikes and needed some gold rated locks to comply with the insurance. I ended up buying two of this size, and one of the smaller 23cm ones. These locks are large, no doubt about it, but to be able to secure two bikes to something, or indeed just to secure the front wheel on my bike to the frame, this size is necessary. The combination of wheel size and suspension forks on my bike meant that this size was needed in order to secure the front wheel to the frame, and as that is where the motor is on the EBCO bikes we have bought, it definitely needs securing! The pic shows what I mean - ignore the red tape, I've just colour coded the locks and keys,it isn't broken!Buying three locks (I did toy with the idea of four!) in one go seems like huge overkill, but when you have invested in expensive and therefore highly stealable electric bikes, it really seems stupid not to spend a tiny proportion of that substantial outlay on some decent protection.

I went on to different sites before purchasing this product and its name says it all. Pit bull! The reviews were always great and if you bought this from a specialist shop you would expect to pay up to 40% more. If you have bought a bike for a tidy sum of money then its worth forking out a bit more to keep it safer and whilst no lock is 100% full proof, it will deter would be thieves just based on its look alone. They would certainly have to spend some time hacking at it and then some. It give me total peace of mind.It looks good but I must admit that it is quite heavy. It probably weighs just under a kilo I have read that you can attach it to the bike however if I am going to the town centre etc I am happy to carry it in a ruck sac on my back.It also comes with 5 keys (yes!) and the lock flashes so that you can see where to insert the key when it's dark. I would certainly recommend this product.

This thing is quite large and as another reviewer has mentioned, comes in toy truck colors. That being said however, this U-Lock is sturdy and definitely won't be easy to crack.I live in LA County so I need a lock that'll at least save my bike frame(and hopefully more...)One amazing reason to get this lock in particular? It comes with a mount for the lock. You can just snap it in place on your bike and not have a bag to lug it around in-I'm using this feature on a colnago road bike,so it should work on most bikes.I have trouble sometimes putting the U lock back into place onto the bike mount, this might be an error of placement on my part though.Overall I'd give this 3.5-4 stars, and below are the reasons why:Pros: Heavy duty, bike mount, several keys, large frame for bigger polesCons: Heavy, no selection of colors, bike mount could be better, price

I bought this after my previous Halfords D-lock seized up, causing me a very frustrating hour knelt on the road trying to unlock it until it finally came open.Firstly and most importantly, this lock is strong and is Sold Secure Gold Rated for security. I'm no expert but it looks very difficult to pick. The best thing about this product is all the added features that make it great value for money. It comes with a decent holster system, unlike many more expensive locks. This is useful given it's quite a big lock. I used to hang my previous D-lock over the handlebars and I think the clattering about contributed to its quick demise, so I was pleased with this holder system. It also comes with a key that has a light built into it, and seems very weather proof - important as the lifespan of a D-lock is really affected by this.

Ordered this because it looked tougher than the other U-locks that can be had for $10-40. It might take a minute or two with an angle grinder (not verified) but it'll deter thieves with hacksaws and bolt cutters. Comes with a mounting clip that is screw on, not flimsy like the others that have a pull-tight mount. Comes with 5 keys (1 big, 4 small) which is nice but unnecessary for my use. I use this to lock my bike in the back of my truck (with a cable) and on campus. Easier to use than those circle-wound cable locks, and quite a bit more secure. On campus, this fits through the rear of the frame and rear wheel, securing all but the front wheel of my bike. This won't fit around your seat tube and rear wheel, you'll need something bigger for that. Great value for the price, I'd recommend this lock to any bike owner.

I have been very satisfied with this product so far. I have been using it for about 9 months and I still have my bike so I'm happy. It comes with lots of keys which is nice. There is a semi-hard, black plastic layer over the metal bar for the lock which has protected my bike from losing paint. My last bike got stolen using a different lock that was a steel cable so I decided to try this because it seems more heavy duty. If this lock fails me and my current bike gets stolen you can bet that I will update this haha. The only issue I have had with this lock was small amounts of rust on the exposed metal at the tips of the U-bar (where the bar goes inside the lock). This caused the lock to be a little stiff to take on and off,but was easily fixed with a couple squirts of WD-40.

If I could take back all the stars I have given to all the products I've bought from Amazon to give to this, I would. It's a stunning piece of kit, one of the highest rated locks, really well put together and combined with a beautifully supple steel cable to lock the front wheel while the D lock secures the rear to the frame. This is smaller than many others in the range, making it much more manageable and light. It even has a proper tethering mechanism to secure it safely to the frame without fear of coming loose or scratching the paintwork. I bought its big brother in error but will keep it for more permanent fixing.. or challenging David Blain to a serious contest. You simply could not ask for a better security system for your bicycle

This thing is huge. It is easily the ugliest thing I own; it looks like it was designed by a toy truck designer at Tonka. It's heavy. It seems worth it, though. The size allows me to get the U around my frame, wheel/fender, and the locking post. I was initially attracted to the financial guarantee, but after seeing the restrictions (they don't guarantee it if a power tool or basically anything that isn't "brute force" is used - pretty useless) I decided it wasn't worth the enrollment fee. I feel pretty confident that its appearance alone will act as a deterrent, and if that doesn't work, the lock itself seems pretty darn solid. Compared to the cost of replacing my bike, this is a small price to pay for security.

I have had my bike stolen and I knew that it could help again in my college town since there are plenty of reports of bike thefts so I decided to get a sturdy U-lock that could keep my road bike from getting snatched again. I did some research and found that this lock was very capable of keeping thieves from cutting it since it is thick.I have had no problem with this lock! I would get a U-lock instead of a cable lock any day!The good thing about this lock is it comes with a holder so you can attach it to your bike when you are riding instead of carrying it in your bag and if you lose your key, they provide about 5 extra keys! The nicest key has a LED light which is pretty handy for those late night rides.
