These are probably not suitable as a first time birdwatching binocular unless you have a fair amount of wide open spaces as the 12x magnification is a bit high for most general use.For my hands they handle well (standard male large hand) and the retracting eye-cups suit my face better than those of the Nikon EX range. Surprisingly I find hand holding far easier than I expected with minimal shake considering the magnification. I do have a suitable tripod adapter for more normal use.The minimum distance between the eyepieces is could be a problem for the young. The minimum focussing distance for this kind of magnification is always a bit further than normal at 6m.,though this won't be a problem for their intended purchaser. They are not sold as waterproof, which may be a problem to some but does mean the focussing action is very smooth and precise.I have used Olympus binoculars for some years and while not providing the ultimate performance of some costing four figures, they perform extremely well and reliably - especially for their price. (That last comment does not necessarily extend to all of their cheapest models unless I have reviewed it)

The Olympus Binoculars will replace a pair of 20 year old, well worn Miranda 10x50 binoculars.I deliberated for days between the Olympus or a pair of nitrogen filled Nikon Action EX 12x50 CF binoculars; finally choosing the Olympus because they mentioned BaK4 prisms in the specification while the Nikon pair did not.Another factor for me was the close focus distance. Olympus quote 6m and Nikon quote 7m.As I use the binoculars mainly for viewing wildlife within my garden, the shorter focus distance was better for me.The Olympus binoculars produce an image that is beautifully clear, crisp and bright. They are brilliant compared to my old Miranda pair.I wear glasses but, because of the wide range dioptre correction,I can use these binoculars without my glasses. The carrying case is a bit of a let down, with a 'faux suede' finish, but my binoculars are usually out on the kitchen table-ready for use, so I don't keep them in it anyway.I am very happy with the Olympus Binoculars and consider them a very good buy at the price.

This review is for the Olympus 12 X 50 EXPS binoculars..My old binoculars are Scope 7 X 50 and are about fifty years old, even so they were very much better than any, admittedly cheaper, binoculars I have tried in recent years - they had greyed, dulled images and not so sharp. This led me to believe that my old ones were of exceptional quality, BUT, the clarity and brightness of the image from the the Olympus 12 X 50s is astounding. I don't know how with 3 times the area magnification compared to the old ones (12 squared divided by 7 squared = 144 / 49 = 3 approx.) it can be so bright and clear, but it obviously is..The twist up/down eye relief is better than the folding rubber ones on the old pair. Also these are less bulky and lighter too - no problem at all with hand-shake..Highly recommended. For their quality, these are very cheap at £105 - price seems to fluctuate a little on Amazon where I got my pair.MT

I agree with the previous reviewers about the quality of these binoculars at the price they are offered. Compared to previous bino's I have owned the Olympus has great magnification, brightness and stability. The real plus for me is the adjustable long eye relief for use with my spectacles. If I have one quibble it is that the carry case and the Objective lens covers are of poor quality and to all intents and purposes completely useless. It could also be the reason why they are cheaper than equivalent instruments. But, do not let this put you off buying the binoculars as a second hand case and lens covers of the required quality for field use can easily be obtained.

I'd been using Nikons of various models for years but on a trip to Europe in 2013 I realised I'd left home without packing binoculars. At Frankfurt Airport, changing planes, I looked for a good but inexpensive pair that would see me through a two-week holiday and bought these. They immediately became my favourite bins. Earlier this month they were dropped and broken so I immediately ordered an identical pair. There are different schools of thought about the "right" binoculars for birding but I think that 12x50 is ideal. I love them. Sharp, tons of light, and they feel good in the hand.

These do exactly what I hoped. I have a smaller pair for the garden but these are brilliant for distance. We live in an area where Buzzards and Red Kites live. I have seen some critism of the "soft bag" but disagree. I think it is far better than a box, and Ok the lense caps do tend to come off but ....Further comment. Now August 17th. Took these binoculars on holiday and actually found the "soft bag" a benefit! A couple of times a low flying plane came over and if you hold the bag right you can pull off the lense caps as you take the binoculars out. I found it quite handy...

Olympus have a great set of binos here which are up to the standards I know other Olympus products for. These 12x50's are light, really nicely made and provide bright and sharp views, not too big either. Very impressed with the quality for the price (paid approx £240). Bought for astronomy viewing but they're really good for just about anything during the day too. If you're small you may find they don't fold enough for both eye pieces to cover your eyes. They're just okay for my wife so check out this aspect in the specs if that concerns you.

These have just arrived, couldn't wait to open them. . . Amazing quality the build is solid, looks more expensive than they are. The optics are fantastic, great eyecups nice focal length. Diopter adjustment and focus are spot on. . . So I looked outside and WOW !!!! The views are crystal clear, no split in the middle nice clear solid well framed picture. . . . Buy you will not be disappointed . Can't wait for the dark stary skies. . Glad I sent the celestron 25x70's back . . . Have a merry Christmas . . And thanks amazon once agin xx

The brand name, afforded me confidence before buying. The costs on Amazon was superb. Follow the set up guide, as it will save you so much time later on. Once set up, these are amazing to use. The sharp, clear detail is great to zooming in on the birds in my garden. Although, my wife who initially mocked me for by binoculars, is using them more than me now. A great product at a great price, highly recommend these binos.

I am blown away by these. Good magnification but light enough to hold in hand for both day to day and for star gazing without a tripod.Very nice bright optics. I was worried by the ratio of objective to magnification. Being middle aged I think the objective lens size is probably more important for me than the exit pupil diameter, nevertheless I am still impressed by their brightness.

Well constructed and not that heavy as some have indicated. Good clear viewing at a sensible price. My only criticism is that the case is soft and I worry about knocking the bins. The flap is also a bit tight despite cranking down the focus wheel. It only just catches the Velcro pad.

Really happy with these, but the 12x magnification makes it difficult to see details of birds due to the slight camera shake if used handheld. There is also a fair bit of chromatic aberration. I think the 10 x 50 might have been better all-rounders. I'm buying a tripod adapter.

Received the product quickly and in perfect condition. Excellent quality and in all ways either matched or exceeded my expectations. If you're after a 12x50 binocular for quality and value this item is outstanding.

Bought these for my husbands birthday mainly for use on holiday by the sea and for bird watching. They are absolutely fantastic quality. Also the moon looks amazing through them. Highly recommended all round use.

Excellent binoculars at a bargain price, couldn't recommend them more strongly. Solidly built and great optics. If there is a criticism, the supplied case isn't exactly solid, nor are the lens caps.
