The box itself is deep, so that's good, but I'm not sure how that works over the course of several days. Our cat kicks after eliminating, which is part of the reason we use a covered box. I thought this would work out because most of the debris would fall back into the box, but after one experience we realized we need a little more of an "edge" to contain the litter.So--back to the covered box!EDIT:The item I received did not have the rim that was supposed to help keep the litter inside the box, a problem I mentioned in my original review. However, as soon as I did, the company IMMEDIATELY mailed out the missing component! They were completely on top of making sure I got the product as it was intended to be used.I changed this from a 2 to a 4 star rating based on their responsiveness and, from what I can tell, the improved design assuming the rim is attached.Unfortunately, within that timeframe, my 91-year-old dad passed away. We had a lot going on and the carton containing the litter box inadvertently ended up in the alley and was picked up before I could retrieve it. (I missed a couple of emails and was too distracted to put the box aside.) So I actually was not able to "test drive" the box with our cat Spy. The 4 star rating reflects the general construction of the box plus the quick and efficient answer I got from this company, Canada Litter.EDIT 2.0Now that we've been able to see how this works over the course of a few months, I can honestly say I like this litter box and would recommend it. Your cat will thank you--and your guests will thank you, too! (Changing this to 5 stars.)

I was initially not as impressed as I hoped to be - the manufacturer makes some pretty outlandish claims (4-5 months w/o a litter change?). I purchased this over the summer (humid NYC) and was able to go from 2 litter changes per week to 1 (I have two very large cats). Definitely an improvement. However, there's been a change. It's November and the weather has been chilly and dry. For the first time, it occurred to me I could possibly move to an every other week changing schedule - it seems very clean. The dry air has made all the difference. I always scooped daily, but it's the urine that's the real odor problem. So with the dry air, the "venting" section can really do what it's supposed to.When it's humid it helps, and when it's dry it's a huge success. I'm using a deodorizing cat litter with just a layer of clay litter on top. I should note the litter box is disassembled each week; all parts are washed with soap and water.I have not had a problem with cat ripping up screen, and they have long sharp claws. I have had a problem with them knocking off the top. Perhaps this is something the manufacturer could address.I'g give this 4.5 stars, and gently ask the manufacturers to realistically address some of their claims and also the top lid frame being easy to knock off.Perhaps next summer I'll put a small fan nearly the box to help aerate the underside. But in the cold weather, it's working perfectly.

It's not for us. We use the crystal style of litter and find that is the best at keeping the litter box stink to a minimum. Our cat is pretty picky about litter boxes but we figured we'd try this anyway. The box does what it says it does. Urine soaks straight into the bottom tray while poop stays in the main part of the box.The vent holes in the bottom piece just upset the cat. She was standing near the box sniffing and trying to cover it from outside of the box, scratching at the floor around it. Then pee started leaking out of the holes. For some reason (maybe that's just where she pees) but it collects only in the corners, and even with litter then some ended up on the floor.Won't continue use. It's a nice idea and maybe for the right cat / litter combination it works, but for us it was worse than just using the regular box with the crystal litter.Had to edit the star count. We originally gave it two stars. After much tweaking of the litter levels on the top and bottom both, we finally got it to work for us. The Crystal litter already had odor way down, using this with that littler has greatly improved our cat box experience. Still can't give it 5 stars as it was such a pain to adapt to.

I have 6, indoor cats so I was excited to try this Self-Drying Litter Box from Cateco. I have 7 litter boxes (one for each cat plus one extra, as recommended by my vet) and they are all scooped daily and the litter completely changed as needed. Despite that, there is still sometimes cat urine odor, which bugs me.This litter box uses any brand cat litter, which I like. The way it is different is that it's a two part litter box. The top part is the part where your cat does his/her business and it's just like an ordinary litter box except that the floor is an open grid that is covered in a plastic mesh pad. The mesh is pretty fine so litter cannot pass through but urine can. Even more importantly, air can circulate under the litter pan which is what reduces the litter box odor. The bottom half of this litter box is basically a shallow pan that is completely vented on all 4 sides. The top part just sits down on the bottom part. Because urine can flow through the mesh in the top part, you need to put something in the bottom part to catch any that flows through. You can use custom liner pads by Cateco

I did not have high expectations of this litter box, but in fact, it works exactly as promised. I put enough kitty litter in the bottom pan to cover the bottom and put a good amount of litter in the top pan (about 2/3rds full). There has been no urine odor at all from the litter box, even when I can see the clumps where the cat has urinated. However, my cat is an enthusiastic digger and the lack of sides/cover has proven to be a fatal flaw. Every time she uses the box, we have to sweep kitty litter up off the floor. If I had a place to put the litter box, like in the bathtub of a rarely-used guest bath or in the garage (accessed via a cat door from the house), I would continue to use this litter box. But, I don't, so I am, reluctantly, going back to a high-sided litter box with a cover. Also, I noticed a couple of reviews where people downgraded this litter box because they failed to read the directions and thus did not put Cateco pads or kitty litter in the bottom pan. You must put litter or the pads in the bottom pan to absorb any urine that leaks through the mesh screen.

Paws down, this is the BEST litter box I have ever purchased. It works exactly like they advertise. Odor is next to none when properly maintained. I've had the box a year (pre-ordered it and waited for it to come to market) and think it is the most effective pet product in existence. You will have no regrets after buying this box.Update January 2018: Picture of new litter box extender. We have been using this for nearly 3 years now and still love it. Many friends have purchased this after my recommendation and all of them love it too. After reading new reviews, you need to know that you don't need the dry pads for this. In fact, I prefer to just use litter in the bottom because it is less maintenance and cost.Cateco also offers a litter extension for this box which makes it less messy. My cats can't kick the litter out of the box on 3 sides and that is amazing. I bought it directly from Cateco with free shipping and received it in a day.

This is an interesting concept: a litterbox with airflow to quickly dry urine and prevent smells. I was skeptical, but it really does work. There's a vented bottom portion you can fill with litter or a pad. They sell the pads but they're rather expensive. You can get puppy urine pads and cut them to size cheaper than buying the Cateco pads, FYI. I just fill the bottom with litter. There's a piece of aerated vinyl you put on the bottom of the main pan, then fill it with litter. As your cat urinates, it allows the urine to dry much faster than a normal litterbox. This reduces urine odor dramatically.Compared to our old covered box, this is immensely better when it comes to smell. Our cat does kick litter out more than a covered box, but the trade-off is totally worth it. Time will tell how well this holds up, but so far I am very impressed.

The Cateco Self-Drying Litter Box is the best litter box I have ever used. It was fairly easy to assemble following the instructions on the sheet. The thin layer of litter in the bottom pan (to catch any drip through) is more than adequate to control any odor generated by my cat. Simon has been using this box for over a month, and with daily picking and litter replacement I have not had to change out the entire box yet. The under tray had two small damp patches that I removed and replaced the litter. The mesh bottom is sturdy, and Simon has not yet managed to tear or puncture the mesh. Simon is able to rip through two heavy duty cat pan liners and a SteelSak trash bag within two days,so the fact that he has not yet managed to damage the mesh in over a month says a lot about the strength of the product.

It definitely helps keep the acidic odor of cat urine to a minimum. With multiple cats its not realistic for anyone to expect the ventilation to keep the box completely dry. It has easy set up and maintaining it seems to be the same as a basic cat box. The manufacturer states that you can extend full cleanings to every 3 to 5 months. I believe this is accurate. I do not think they mean a litter change , i believe they mean dumping the whole litter box and cleaning it out with soap and water to start fresh. It is a bit pricey. It doesn't change the fact that you must scoop your litter, so if that is what you are looking for, this is not it. It is designed to help with odor control, which is does nicely.

After buying this, I bought another shortly after. I had two enclosed litter boxes before this. Both were endlessly frustrating, no matter what I did (cleaning daily, changing litter brand, etc.) the urine smell always seemed to linger through the entire house. Not to mention, it would cake to the bottom of the pan.Since buying this litter box, the smell has gone entirely. And it makes it SO much easier to scoop as it dries the clumps out. The only complaint I have is that sometimes while scooping, I've snagged the plastic edge that clamps down on the material on the bottom of the box. So I can't get it back on without literally getting my hands dirty.

Okay, so while there were some bumps in the road with the set up and the mesh - I finally have it all sorted out and things are great! Does smell? Not really and compared to other litter boxes heck no! There is an obvious difference that I noticed after a few days. My cat does fling the litter everywhere so I use flushable and the box is setup in a spare bathroom in the tub. (The drain is closed). The transition to this box was easy enough as I placed it in the same spot as the other and used the same litter. So far a great box. I'll update if anything changes.

This box does seem to keep the litter drier, which should reduce odor. There is a sort of fabric layer in the bottom of the top piece, which allows air to circulate under the litter. You can put either more litter in the bottom or a special pad they sell for the purpose. The cat didn't object to the change, but our cat is pretty mellow. Ours did come with a part missing, and so I emailed the company. Customer service was wonderful and the replacement arrived quickly. The rim around the box really helps keep the litter in the box. Good design on this!

This product is a bit pricey, but I was impressed with the video and took a chance. I am thrilled that I did. I have two cats, so I have a lot of cleaning to do. Normally the wet portion of the box is a pain to try and keep clean, but with the air circulation from the bottom the wet portions dry quickly and can removed in a lump. The box does not contain a pad for the bottom tray, but you can cut a puppy training pad to fit. There are pet store that sell the replacement pads by Cateco if you do a Google search for your area.

This cat box definitely reduces odors and effort. We had tried hooded cat boxes and all kinds of litters without stopping the odor problem, so this is an excellent innovation. The sides are slightly higher than a typical cat box, so it's hard for our elderly cat to climb in. She has occasionally ended up making a mess on the floor, presumably when she's too lazy to make the extra effort to navigate the walls. It's not possible to allow for every cat's idiosyncrasies, though, and this box does what it says it will.

It actually does greatly reduce odour! My place is small & I don’t have a basement to put a litter box in so this is of utmost importance to me! It’s nice to find a product that does what it says it will do. It takes a lot of litter to fill it initially, but I used the 50% lighter variety so this hasn’t been a problem. I do wish the sides were higher. That’s all!
