This a very compact and lightweight lantern. If you are back packing, and you have to think very carefully about every item you take from a weight /size perspective, this should be very high on your list. Its different form a flashlight in that it's designed to provide a wide flood of light and it does this very well. There are three light levels ranging from 12 lumens to a bright 205 lumens. There is a red light mode, which is almost too bright, and flashing modes including SOS. Its IPX6 which means that it can take rain/heavy splashes, but you don't really want to submerge it. The only reason I didn't give it the full 5 stars was that the plastic catch keeps the lid and the base together (you need to take the lid off to access the battery)
