If you're relatively new to photography, you may wonder why anyone would choose to pay ~£500 for a prime (ie. fixed focal length) lens. Why not pay a little extra and get a 24-70mm zoom? For many situations the 24-70mm is an ideal walk-about lens, but the 50mm f1.8S is a beautifully fast lens. 'Fast' means that it has a maximum aperture of f1.8, which means it lets lots of light in, and so not only can you use faster shutter speeds (to avoid blurring caused by motion of your subject), but especially with modern digital cameras (high ISOs) you can take surprisingly good photographs in low light levels with no flash. (Nikon's first 24-70mm zoom in the Z-mount has a maximum aperture of f4.)

This lens is my second lens for my Z6, initially, I did not use it but with my newfound free time, I have been shooting this 50 more and boy it is shockingly sharp. The autofocus is fast and the construction is faultless, I did agree with the idea saying that because it is made outside Japan then the item is of lesser quality! This is not how engineering works my friends... Sorry... As to my only gripe with this lens, is one that is completely subjective, namely character, the look is clinical but other than that it is faultless, the cost increase is justified in my opinion since the stabilisation in my Z6 eliminates the need for an f1.4 hence I will keep that lens. This is a winner.

The best 50mm in the Market. I have compared this lens against my other 50mm lenses ( even with Zeiss planar ), the pictures quality is whole new level in many of the attributes. Micro contrast is really great, may be a fraction lesser than Zeiss. The image quality is great at all apertures, in conjunction with the sharpness the subject in focus pops out quite amazingly.The only negative aspect I would say is, it is too bulky for a 50mm 1.8 lens.

The Nikon 50 1.8s lens renders like no other prime lens I have owned, I am constantly surprised at the Image Quality (detail & mood) that this lens projects to the sensor. I had to double check the default settings on capture One when importing the first images (taken with this lens on a Nikon Z6), as I did not expect such a noticeable improvement over my previous 26MP APS system (with equivalent lens).

I own many lenses. This is by far one of, if not the best lens in my arsenal to date. It just works. Silently focuses (even in video). It is crisp edge to edge. And you can actually shoot at f1.8! Never mind the two stop of sharpness rule! I love this lens. And I will be investing in more of the Z lenses for my mirrorless camera system.

It is absolutely the best z mount lens you can get at that price. Extremely sharp , Bokeh is very good , light transmission of F1.4 lens on a DSLR although it is rated at F1.8 , extremely versatile focal length and light weight. The size of the lens matches very well the size of the Z cameras. In summary, A must have lens.

Wonderful lens for Nikons new Z mount. Very sharp, even wide open, nice and light too. Don't be fooled by the fact it's "only" f1.8 the image quality is up there with (and even surpasses) more expensive f1.4 lenses. Bought at £350 - and at that price it's a bargain for the quality on offer!

Massive improvement in comparison to Nikkor 50mm f1.4 AFD, new lens is already excellent at max aperture. With Z camera and latest firmware focus is pretty good. In fact it is so good that as a current user of two Leica M 50mm lenses I can say that new Nikon S 50mm is spectacular.

Extremely high resolution lens with plenty of contrast and a nice saturation level. Easily comparable or better than the Sigma Art 50mm for F mount. One other notable quality is the consistency of resolution across the frame which is simply excellent.

Absolutely incredible value now for the Z Series cameras. This lens is so sharp, free of distortion and has lovely colours. You will not find a better lens for the money. Day and night compared to be 50mm 1.8G.

Love this system, I haven't used the Sony A series so can't compare, but it works really well on the Z6 and has fantastic images quality. Considerably better than the G series equivalents.

Best 50mm lens I've ever used. Brilliant. Weather sealed, razor sharp at all apertured. Pricey, as 50mm lenses go but, worth every penny for build and picture quality.

One of the best Nikkor lenses I've used. It's really sharp, very good contrast and accurate colour rendition. Negligable chromatic aberration and distortion.

My first Nikon S lens for my Z6 . Takes great photos and is not heavy or large and is well made . Great in low light
