Nice build quality, well made, bright images, good colour quality.Using these compared to the smaller 'travel' sizes is a bit like seeing something in HD for the first time.If you wear glasses, you can still use these with no problem at all - that's how I use them). If you don't wear glasses, then the 'pop up' eyepieces work a treat and feel nice and solid. The bins are purged with nitrogen, meaning they are waterproof, and the internals surfaces will not fog up. The external lens surfaces of any binocular can fog up... if they do it is no big deal ( just wipe them with a soft cloth, or wait for the bins to come to ambient temp... then fogging should disappear). There is a dioptre adjustment on the right lens to fine tune the view...(focus on something using just your left eye and the left bin lens... then look with just your right eye and right lens at the same thing, and move the dioptre adjuster until it is in perfect focus with your right eye... Hey presto: when you use both eyes, you should be getting the best focus possible). The dioptre adjuster is nice and stiff, it shouldn't easily get knocked out of adjustment. These comes with case, lens covers and a neck strap. The supplied case is light, good enough quality, it has a belt loop on it and a velcro fastening. The supplied neoprene neck strap is solid enough and comfortable to use ( these bins feel like quality, but are not 'too heavy' to carry for long periods). You do have to fit the strap yourself though... a little bit fiddly. The objective lens covers are the 'pop in' type - they seem like a good fit, and stay put ( more important than the eyepiece cover, in my view). If you don't like them hanging down whilst you are using the bins, you can remove these altogether...be careful not to lose them though. The rainguards ( that cover the eye pieces) is a hinged one piece affair: it simply presses on. If you are clever, you will notice there is a loop to fit these to the neck strap, which is good, because they can come off easily, but it's hardly worth mentioning really,I bought these after comparing them to 'professional grade' bins costing 3 times more (Zeiss Conquest HD and Leica Trinovid)... then being surprised that I couldn't really tell the difference in the image quality. My eyes are not perfect, so your own experience may vary. If you are a regular presenter on BBC Countryfile, you might want the 'professional' ones...

They're good. However before you get caught up in the magnifications I would just like to say that 12 x is just about your limit unless you have got a very steady hand. That aside the clarity and level of light through the binoculars is brilliant, I would have thought 12x42 would have been a little dim but the brightness is as good as my Opticron wp 8x32's. It's got to be the coatings, notice how the 12x42 are not available in the cheaper Prostaff, they obviously need the extra light at the higher magnification. Dimensions; good, conspicuous but at the same time a nice handful, Barbour front pocket size. Quality; good, slightly Tonka 'ish', encased in thick scalloped 'Batman' like rubber. My only reservation in this area is 'will the rubber become sticky over time' well we'll have to wait and see. Unfortunately the Velcro/nylon fabric case doesn’t exude the same quality, the case feels slightly lifeless and shapeless, and really the binoculars deserve something that could pass as leather. The single piece eye lens cover is a joke which fortunately I was pre warned off. Maybe some form of serve heat might shrink them to the correct size. Back to the optics, the image sharpens with a whiskers movement, the colour is very natural and the image quality if very clear right up to infinity with hardly any softening or diming at the outer edge. I have only just started using them, the magnification was really why I bought them and in this area they don’t disappoint. Sharp, bright and clear.

The Nikon 'Monarch 5' are the best bins I have ever had. I took up birding watching five years ago and bought my first ever pair of bins some 'Vikings' from an RSPB reserve 'Leigton Moss' located in Lake District called'. I was pleased with my new bins. But one day I picked up my bins from the neck strap, took them out of the case and to my horror they completely spit in half down the hinge in the middle so instead of to lenses I had too monoclurs. I needed a pair so all i could afford at the time was a cheap pair from Argos 10x36 unbranded to but they are not the best in the world to do bird watching. So getting back to the main review here of my new Nikon 'Monarch 5',the image is pin sharp and the amout of light they let in because of the ED optics and multiple coating layers added to the lenses which help a lot, the phase corrected lenses and prisms only add the final icing on the cake. There easy to focus and adjusting the diopter on the right side of them (as standard) is worth setting up before your happy with them.I don't regret for a minute in paying out what I paid on Amazon which was £277.00 I think for that money there are a very good buy ineed. So too some-up, a simply brilliant pair of binoculars you really can't go wrong with them.

Optically near perfect, with a bright sharp image, good colour and a remarkable impression of depth (how do they do this? the image of my previous binoculars, Opticron Veranos, was dull and flat compared to these). Light for their power, comfortable to hold, soon feel like part of your hand and you forget they exist, you are just seeing better. Good slightly stretchy strap and serviceable case come with them. Remarkable discount from this dealer makes them a real bargain. They arrived quickly. My only complaint is that the eyepiece covers are a very loose fit, in fact they seem to have been designed for a different model and fall off all the time. I attached them to the strap with a nylon cord,so they don't get lost, but it's a nuisance and causes the eyepiece lenses to get rain-spotted on wet days, so that you have to go under a tree to wipe them. But I won't take a star off for this minor detail, because the binoculars themselves are so good.

Seriously nice binoculars. Nice and bright and pretty good in low light. When compared to an older paid of Zeiss 15x50 the Nikons are a lot clearer.12x is right on the limit of my ability to hand hold, and a tripod or some sort of stand would definitely be useful if you are looking at things for a long time, but still glad I go the 12x as opposed to the 10x.The bag or eyepiece covers are not the best I've come across, but when you get used it they do the job protecting the lenses etc, just a bit fiddly fitting the eyepiece covers to the strap, so be patient! There is no noticeable colouration, I have noticed green or blue tint with cheaper binoculars, but not these.I like the rubberised soft feel, they fit nicely in your hands, not too light or heavy, plus the fact you can increase / decrease the depth of the eyepiece, the focus wheel is solid and I would recommend these to anyone who wanted a very good mid range paid of binoculars.

Birders usually say magnification x8 is best. No doubt that is true, with the wide field of view. But what about if you want to see say, waders, that are a bit bigger but further away. These are lighter than my current 8*42. So easy to keep steady. Swarovski have just released 12*42, aimed at wildlife watchers. I saw a chap with a pair at Snettisham. Of course I had binocular envy. But these cost a couple of days work not a month's work, so I will happily slum it with these as they are crystal clear in any case and allegedly ED glass.of course made in china not Austria. So for dawn dusk I will be using x8 binocular but the rest of the time I am not sure my x9 or X10 magnification will get a look in.I am not finding the field of view being reduced a problem, quickly zoned in on a firecrest yesterday . You get a wide comfortable strap , decent raincap and nicely fitting tethered raingaurds. Case if you want that for storage.

Very pleased with these binoculars. I wear varifocals and have no trouble with these at all. I debated whether to go for these 10x42 or the 8x42 version. These are OK for holding (very light for what they are) but they are on the limit of what you can hold and keep a steady image. I wanted the greater magnification as we have several reservoirs round here, and the birds tend to be a fair way away. Just possibly the 8x42 might have been better for near to mid viewing. I am very pleased with them ( especially in low light conditions) because they are streets better than my old pair, and well worth the money in my opinion. Also very pleased with the vendor (Gates).I don't normally like to buy high value goods from the Marketplace, but these guys were totally excellent. Brilliant service and next day courier delivery. Highly recommended

Sourced these from elsewhere as I needed super quick delivery which, in this instance, Prime couldn't provide. The build and image quality is superb. Having tried the wife's 8x42 ATB I decided on a pair for myself but to differentiate bought the higher magnification. In use the 8x42 are more stable but inevitably the image is smaller. Having the option has been great. They are very light and easy to carry around. Unlike some other reviews I find the provided strap to be fine whilst the rain guard stays in place and doesn't get lost providing you thread the carry strap through the ear molded onto the end of the rain guard - I can only assume that those users simply placed the rain guard over the eye pieces,in which case it is a loose rather than snug fit and will inevitably fall off.Definitely worth the money.

Good optics and smooth focus. Not lightweight, but at about 700grams not too heavy and the weight reflects the excellent build quality. Also looked at Hawke Frontier ED, Vortex Viper HD and RSPB HDX which had similar specification - but at £229 the Nikon Monarch 5 represented the best value. I also have a pair of Monarch 8 x 42 which are great for bird watching in the garden - the larger image of the 10 x 42 gives greater detail and allows closer inspection of distant objects with marginally more shake when focussing. Both binoculars are an excellent choice and the 8 x 42 are probably best for general use, although there is not a great deal of difference.I have owned Zeiss and Swarovski binoculars and whilst experts will undoubtedly disagree, I find that these are just as good.

My only regret is I didn't purchase these years ago! The build quality is excellent and in use they are exactly what you would expect from Nikon. The resolution is awesome. As a glasses wearer I can use them with my glasses on and then a simple adjustment of the right eye piece (as I have a different prescription for each eye) means I can use them without my glasses, then rubber eye shields that are adjustable and screw in and out are a revelation and make the binoculars so much easier and more enjoyable to use. The lens protectors are well thought out and are designed never to be lost. They are well balanced and covered in non-slip material which feels like rubber. You wont regret buying these.

I am always wary of reviews written soon after purchase hence this one is after several months use and is my impressions cover that period. For the last 50 years I have been the proud owner of Zeiss 5x56 binoculars which have given me exemplary service. However they have become too heavy to carry whilst walking (age does weary one!) so I began to search for a suitable alternative for my mobile viewing (I still use my Zeiss in a hide, etc.) and plumped for this model. I am bound to say that I am more than satisfied. The clarity, light gathering capacity and portability are excellent. For the price (I paid over £900 for Zeiss) it constitutes a very good buy indeed.Cliff Jones

I was going to buy these new, After spotting a nearly new pair at a greatly reduced price from a uk based shop , after calling and speakiing to someone at the shop I ordered though Amazon, on arrival earlier than expected, on opening they seemed brand new" a few marks on the original box. as described in the review, they are amazing"" as expected . instructions tell you how to tune to your eyes, even for wearers of glasses, I use glasses for reading, so after tuning to my vision, no need to wear them, I find no need for a tripod stand for this great 12x42 magnification even on a overcast day they are crystal clear " and weather proof" even at full price they are worth it"

Superb value for money! My Swarovski 8.5x42 will be daddy's first choice- but then it costs 6 times as much. I initially bought the Nikon Monarch 10x42 as the "family binoculars"- to be used by lesser mortals- like the wee wife and the kids. And how they love it! But now I have a confession to make: This one is not THAT far beyond the Swarovski. At a fraction of the price. So- my advice to you is: If you are considering to buy a really decent pair of binoculars and don't have £2,000 in your back pocket; try this one first. You might just be entirely happy with it.

I have never spent this much before in a pair of binoculars but I have to say it’s worth the cost .Best feature is the close range focus ,down to about ten feet along with excellent clarityOnly issue is the eye cap covers are a poor fit and don’t stay in place unlike the front lens covers which work well ?All in all a good value

Positives:. Incredibly clear image. Easy to focus. Ruggedly constructed. Reasonably light weight and easy to hold steadyNegatives. A carry / storage case without a strap leaves a little on the design table. In summary: I love these binoculars and I am pleased I took the non conformist route by choosing the 12x42s.
