50 hours played game (Completed) review:The game is slow to start with a long tutorial period, so a lot of the game elements are locked until you reach certain parts of the story. I found the further you get into it, the better it becomes, opening new team members, areas to explore and things to do. The music is fantastic with different tracks for each area that bring it all together. The battle system is mostly live action but time freezes when you are selecting a spell or an enemy to attack. At an early point in the game you get the ability to catch monsters, sort of like Pokémon. It's a good idea and works well, but the drop rates are very low (RNG!). As someone that enjoys turn based games it took a while to get used to,but it was fun mastering the mechanics.Graphics:The graphics are fantastic and if you enjoy Studio Ghibli movies you will love it. It switches between traditional animation to 3D a reasonable amount, so you get the best of both worlds. with the option for 4K at 30 FPS or 1440 at 60 FPS. I went with the higher frame rate, but switching between the two I see no noticeable difference, even with the PS4 pro and a 4K TV.Overall I would rate the game a 7/10. The story is good, game mechanics are fun and it was fun to explore and learn about the world.Tips for beginners:- Don't grind levels until you get your second party member. It's not worth it, and it drags out the start of the game.- Save your game often, I only suffered one crash but like any RPG game I was punished and had to redo an hour's worth of content.- You can complete the story line with basically any combination of caught monsters, don't worry about googling the best teams until very late in or post game.- learn the battle system, and take advantage of the defend action. You will get punished when fighting bosses if you don't.- If you enjoy trophy hunting this has some very tedious trophies. You have been warned ?

I heard that there was a sequel for this game in the works so I decided to buy this game and truly I am struggling to find anything really negative to say about it aside from that it borrows a bit from the pokemon video game series and yet it looks at that financially successful franchise and flicks it away like a spec of dirt.I thought the story was very good one of the best I have seen in a rpg it is well thought out with a good amount of twists to keep you engaged, all the major cast members have a backstory you would not get that in a pokemon game. The gameplay once again very good the battle system was unique and after a few battles easy to use, side quests was varied so you wouldn't get bored,I liked the alchemy aspect of the game where you could make new stronger weapons, shields and accessories, the in-game language decoding I admit I had a few problems with and had to look up for the answers to learn new spells but the rest I figured out myself, however it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the game. The soundtrack had a lot of catchy tunes that helped me get even more immersed into the game, overall if you like rpgs this is a must buy and even if you don't traditionally buy these genre games you won't go wrong with this, it's more bang for your money than any generic pokemon game. After playing this I am looking forward to the second game in the series which I will definitely be purchasing .

Tons of stuff to do in this JRPG. Of all those I've played, this one needs utmost patience, preparedness to re-start the game umpteen times, and spend most of your life levelling-up. The story line is good, it looks wonderful, but without sneaking a peek at the only 'written' guide on the "FAQs + Walkthroughs" website, you will miss a ton of stuff, some of which may prevent you from progressing the game. Also, you WILL need to keep your own notes and stats. This will be apparrent if you are a 'smash your way through' type, and then end up at the next to final chapter, knowing that your chances of success have just zero'd. You do need to take your time, but, if you like capturing and nurturing monsties, alchemy formulas, flying, sailing, collecting, and not having to wait for specific waypoints to appear before saving, you will love this, Only annoying part for me is the combat system. As you progress, you will have 3 characters to control. You will find the command options for your two colleagues frustrating. For the purposes of monstie collecting, you will have to develop your own tactics, 'coz your mates really are a pain! Having said all that, I love it to bits. It's now very cheap to buy a new copy of a game that's only a couple of years old. Get it. Enjoy it.

It's sad how Final Fantasy is such a dominant name in the RPG genre when I don't feel it's been very effective in years (probably going back to when FFX). So when looking for something new to play I stumbled across this on the suggested released, so thank you Amazon for this one! This game brings back the RPG feel of the classics with a touch of the new. The best way I can describe the gameplay feel is like if you mixed Pokémon, Final Fantasy IX, and Kingdom Hearts. The story is sweet and heartwarming, brought to life with some brilliant voice acting (especially Mr Drippy), and gorgeous cutscenes animated by Studio Ghibli. Further to this the stunning soundtrack, composed by Joe Hisaishi, makes you feel like you're part of a grand LOTR-esque world. There are quite a lot of fetch quests and bounty hunt missions, but for once in an RPG I didn't find them irritating. I found it felt natural to the main character to want to help everyone. The game does front load the game with tutorials, but once you've found footing it really opens up. The attention to detail makes it an instant classic to me, which I will most definitely play again.I cannot recommend this game enough! If you like classic Final Fantasy, you'll love this!

I have never owed a PS3 but had heard great things about this game so when it became available for the Switch I didn`t hesitate to buy it. I`m so happy that I did as it has saved me from Covid depression as I have played it for over 100 hours during the lock down and quite frankly it has rescued my sanity. To put it mildly this game is a masterpiece. Easily the best JRPG I have played with a brilliant storyline, amazing graphics and fantastic characters. It even has one of the saddest and heart touching starts to a video game I have ever come across. Oliver is the hero of the game but the real star is Mr Drippy, a wise cracking fairy with a lantern hanging from his nose with an incredible accent straight out of the Rhondda Valley. This game has everything. From boss fights against sometimes scary and at others weird creatures like giant squids and lava monsters to amazing scenary from a beautfully drawn world inhabited by humans, talking cats and a huge cow like queen amongst many many other unforgettable characters. I can`t recommend this game highly enough for both children and even for a hardened gamer like myself. Buy this and you will not be disappointed.

I have been finding for the past decade or more that games have solely been focusing on graphics and how awesome they can make the game look and fail to put any thought into the story line more like it's an afterthought. This game does not the story line is good and adds to the game with just the right amount of story to playing/battles. I've been playing it for around 30 hours now and see no signs of the end which is good as the last rpg I found to be this long which shoed no signs of boredom for me and was thought provoking was Final Fantasy 7. It has an anime feel to it seamlessly blends gameplay with anime sequences in the best way possible. The game takes the best part of a pokemon style game where you have to evolve your character,Dragon Quest (or warrior as I'm sued to calling it), Earthbound and Tales of games and creates a unique but familiar style game and I doubt any one would be disappointed by it. The only down side of the game is that I wish it was two player like the tales of games so a friend could control a character in battle as the ai isn't the best at times and caused me to die as it is quite difficult at times.

Great game. This is not a review of the game at all but the Packaging. It was not so great.. I normally collect sealed copies of games I love to display and collect. I bought the European copy to add to my collection. But could hear many pieces rambling about in the case. I was afraid the Blu-ray may have somehow broken. I had to open to make sure. The blu ray was fine but the case was shattered in some parts which was hidden by the art print from the outside. I now have an unsealed game with a broken case and slightly damaged print. I am disappointed.Update: i've updated to 5 stars. I sent back the broken product and promptly received a replacement that is in perfect shape.

definitely brought back memories playing this again was hoping that this would be released on the ps4 eventually and my prayers where answered ? don’t see how it’s changed that much not sure it should be called a remaster it seems like the ps3 version has just been put onto the ps4 graphically it was ahead of its time anyway so maybe it has been enhanced in ways I can’t see ? if you haven’t played this before then this game is a must buy if you are a RPG fan I would however possibly wait for a price drop Argos for instance are selling for £45.99 which is daylight robbery to be quite honest it’s a remaster not a brand new game think £35 is the highest it is worth ?

Great fun - combines all the best of a classic JRPG with whatever it is that keeps taking us back to Pokémon. Surprisingly tough at times too. Creature evolution is a *bit* dull in that the evolved forms just get a palette swap and a slightly expanded range of abilities that are basically the same anyway. You have to rely on physical attacks until you get the main character, Oliver, to a point where he becomes your main tank, but that doesn't happen until a lot later on. I wouldn't say the cast left much of a lasting impression on me, and at times it did feel just a shade monotonous or sluggish, but overall it was a really great game.

Having not played the original when it came out on PS3 in 2011, I am really enjoying this game. This switch version is a direct port of the 2011 version and NOT a remaster like the PS4 versions. Having said that it still looks absolutely brilliant on the switch. The story is really gripping and sucks you in, battling can be a challenge specially in the beginning but you will be rewarded if you stick with it. It loses one star because the game can randomly close at times and you lose all your progress if you dont save regularly. Besides this, it is a fantastic addition to the switch library.

The improvements from ps3 to ps4 are minimal at best, however the game itself is still fantastic. Whether you played it on ps3 and are craving a good monster catcher or are new to the game there is a lot to enjoy here. The story is simple but charming as are the characters and presentation. If you like jrpgs, monster collecting, a beautiful art style and many hours of content this is probably a good bet. If you are coming to this after playing Ni No Kuni 2 be aware that the combat system is very different so you may want to watch a video or two to see if you will like it.

I really enjoyed this game. The graphics are beautiful and all the characters are great, especially Drippy! (Definitely use the English version if you speak English - the welsh characters are fab) The music is gorgeous and is recorded by a full orchestra which makes such a difference when you're exploring big maps like in this game - lots of playing hours. Minor bug bears like overly long tutorials/very slow increase of difficulty/too much time spent in a realm where you can't use magic etc bring it down from a five star but it is really worth playing if you enjoy RPGs.

This is a charming game, yes it takes a while to level up and gain good familiars. But it is a well rewarding game with great narrative and compels you to want to play. Great visuals as you would expect from Studio Ghibli & Level-5. If you want to experience it all then your in for a long haul. I bought this game when it first cam out and you struggled to get it, as it was out of stock. It's a definite play, I have no words for the other reviewer here. Other than I loved the game and would be very happy if someone bought it for me.

24.4.2015

I can't give the game the full 5 stars because well, I haven't gotten anywhere near to completing it! But it definitely seems worthy. It has beautiful visuals, well thought out game/ battle mechanics (something which can make or break an RPG game for me) and an immersive world. Plus it really feels like you are in a Studio Ghibli movie! I wish I had picked this game up earlier. Just an expertly crafted game which I haven't yet been able to fault. It most definitely is essential.

This game is brilliant. Creative story with amazing animation(obviously). Similar to His Dark Materials in terms of ideas.Sometimes the save points can get annoying when you die in battle, and enemy respawn can be an issue in some places when you explore. But a game where you explore a universe, fixing broken hearts, is all you really want.Plus you can play it on the loo, so there's that.Would love the second game to come out too!
