I bought this for my 10 year old daughter, but mostly use it myself! I do have artistic ability but despite doing art A level, never received any formal lessons/tips/guidance from my lazy teachers. This system gives step by step instructions in the techniques of using pencil, pastel and watercolours. God knows how, but the technology is so sophisticated it is almost EXACTLY like using real pencil, pastels and watercolours- you can dilute paint, blend pastels....it is incredible. But the strength of this package is not just in the technology, but in the quality of the teaching - it is what I have been crying out for since my A level days all those years ago.The teacher (Vincent!)is not interested in doing 'painting by numbers'or by copying or by rote- if you follow the lessons methodically he teaches you the techniques of painting/drawing and introduces you to real artists to illustrate different approaches. The initial lessons are very proscribed- he mixes the paint, tells you what brushes to use, which thickness, which dilution - so you receive an incredible amount of help and guidance, which really builds up your confidence and makes the whole process less daunting. Gradually as you proceed through the lessons, help is withdrawn little by little ( it is still there but you have to specifically look it up) so you learn to stand on your own 2 feet without relying on his support. This comes naturally because he taught you so well the information about brush thickness, using grids, glazes etc. To practise each teaching point you create a picture using the technique. You can repeat the lessons as many times as you like- but you can't jump forward- you have to run before you can walk. At any time you can draw or paint freestyle without being restricted to the lessons. Art Academy is so uncannily realistic that with the knowledge it gives you you could easily transfer everything you learn to actual paper/canvas. I cannot recommend this system highly enough. I am a great beliver that talent is only one factor in artistic ability- there is also practice and tricks and techniques, so even if you are blessed with only a little of the former this system can get you creating art. You DO need an extra large 3DS as you can't use the stylus accurately on the smaller 3DS. Incidentally both I and my daughter permanently turn the 3DS off when we use it for anything as it makes our eyes go weird, and this package is still perfectly okay like that.

It's hard to find a single fault with this game. The lessons are incredibly easy to follow and very rewarding in the early stages. The instructor is charming and not only explains how to do things, but also WHY you are doing those things e.g. why you shade lighter objects with a bit of reflected colour etc. With each guided lesson there is also an accompanying mini lesson where you are able to try out the techniques yourself and develop your own personal style instead of just copying if that's more to your learning style.Another wonderful feature is the atmosphere of the game. Some drawings are based on observation and instead of just using a photo, it is presented as a subtle,well-looped video as if you are actually observing from real life. My personal favourite (so far) is the field study. You could see the grass swaying slightly in the wind and hear quiet birdsong and sheep. The whole experience is incredibly calming and you barely notice that you've spent an extra half an hour or so perfecting your painting! There are many more points I could cover but that would make this review into a short novel so I won't bore you. As I said, it is very difficult to find fault with this game and I recommend it whole-heartedly. If I had to find one negative point, it's that you can't download the custom lessons from the internet as I had hoped. You can buy extra lessons for a few pounds but I was looking forward to finding online communities that shared lessons of their own. You have to swap them in person or from Nintendo spotpass during a promotion. Even so, I will definitely be buying the additional lessons myself!

The idea behind this game is to take you from the very basics of art to producing really very complex works indeed. Beginning with a cherry and working up to more complicated still lifes and portraits. There are pencils, coloured pencils, pastilles and paints available. They are fantastically realistic behaving just like the real thing. There are plenty of different paper types too ranging from smooth to textured to coloured. The lessons in this game are carefully thought out and easy to follow, There are often asides detailing innumerable famous artists, but cleverly these can be skipped if they are interfering. The lessons are more comprehensive than the previous incarnation and there are many more of them. You also get a free mode where you can draw whatever you like. There is a series of photos for you to copy or you can try using a picture from your own photo collection on the sd card. The really big difference is the gallery. You get your own art gallery to display your works in. You can share them via streetpass and demonstrate how good/bad you are. This is where I make my one negative point (I wont say criticism). You can only get the most out of this game if you have a modicum of talent, I don't, and even though I have noticed improvements I still get frustrated with how difficult I find even the basic lessons. That is why I have given it four stars for fun rather than five. If you enjoy art you will love this. if you want to (and are able to) improve than again this is for you. But for the talentless like me it can be both enjoyable and frustrating.

If like me you have tried "art" before and just made a mess the appeal of having lessons on my favourite device, the 3DS XL, was too much to resist. I thought I would just get frustrated creating again and Art Academy would be put on the shelf. After the first couple of lessons however, I was hooked.... my cherry came out awesome and my tulip looked better than Vince's (the tutor). The lessons are broken down into simple steps which are easy to follow. You learn technique as you go along and can always go back and try again. Its all about practice. Its a great little program I would recommend it to anyone wanting to improve on basic art skills. Its shame there isn't a website for the game and a chance to upload your gallery online to peruse on the big screen and print off your favourites. You can save to SD card so i guess you can download from there, I haven't tried that yet :) All in all, great fun.

I thought I knew how to paint and draw but the lessons on this 'game' are fantastic at teaching the fundamentals of composition, form, tone, colour, perspective and more. Not only that you can produce fantastic drawings and paintings all from step by step instructions that will build your confidence. You will learn a ton but all in bite size chunks so its not overwhelming. You teacher 'Vincent' is really great and takes you through painting, pencil drawing, coloured pencils, chalks. You learn how to unlock the versatility of these tools to create subtle or bold pieces of art.Once you've finished a lesson you can hang your work in a virtual gallery, a very cool feature.Best of all though you can easily take the techniques learned across to real painting and drawing. So if you're a novice or have never picked up a paint brush before then buy this game, you will be inspired to give it a go.

I own the first Art Academy for NDS and have used it loads of time. It was a great piece of software for anyone, who wanted to draw/paint on NDS. This is a new version for 3DS with all the new lessons and more features. So what is an Art Academy? The main idea is very simple. We start with basic tools and techniques and as we progress new ones are being introduced. The lessons are very good, perfectly designed and even people who never draw before will be amazed with the their results! Vincent, the character that teaches us is one of the biggest assets of the game. He creates a great atmosphere and the way he tells us about the brushes and techniques is very good, making all lessons and examples easy to follow!

It was well packaged, and despite the fact it was supposed to come in today, it came the day after I ordered it (Standard delivery. I ordered it a week ago). £2 for a 3DS game is a very good deal, plus the game is quite fun and it teaches you art skills that you can then apply to real life art. The game came in perfect condition, looking like if it was bought brand new from a shop like Game. Great product.P.S. It doesn't xome with the box but if you read the product, that's how it's sold. Just saying it because I know someone won't read the product details and then complain here

I bought this for my son to play with and to, maybe, learn how to draw/paint in a fun way. He enjoyed it somewhat but I tell you something.....He hasn’t had as much fun with this as I have!I love the lessons by that bearded fellow who shows you how to draw and gives you tips and examples to follow along with and copy. And all this can be viewed in 3D if you want to really make your images pop!Fantastic fun. Informative. Fascinating. Would highly recommend to anyone who has the slightest interest in drawing/painting. There’s a lot to be learned here and a lot of fun to be had!

Good value for money.I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to try out art without the mess of art equipment and the infamous task of having to get paint off of everything. Althought I say "try out" you do have to remember this is a game that aims towards being realistic so you have to be patient if you want to make anything amazing. There's no real need for 3D on this game, it has some nice 3D moments but it's still a flat canvas you're working on.You would obviously do better to have a 3DS XL for this game but with the zoom feature I managed to do alright with my regular 3DS.

My 7 year old son is passionate about drawing and he loves learning the techniques in this software. It guides you through various techniques to produce quite impressive drawings. The stylus works well with it. I've given it 4 stars instead of 5 as I don't know how well this would appeal to older children or adults, and the stylus makes things a bit simple compared to actually using art materials. But for a child who is equally keen on DS and drawing, it's a good purchase.

We bought this for our 13 year old daughter who loves drawing and always has pencils and paper close to hand so she can draw at any time. Not only does this game give her some ideas of what to draw if her mind is blank maybe one day but also it saves on paper too and keeps all her lovely artwork and creative projects on one tiny DS game card!

I wasn't sure about this game at first because I didn't have any of the previous games. As soon as i turned it on i was addicted. It is so realistic especially on the 3ds xl and just extremely fun. This game will really benefit me for the future when i do my art gcse. I highly recommend.

Really helpful in teaching art especially the sketching. Goes through loads of different theory sections during the lessons as well that you can either read of skip depending on what you want. Gives you the option to follow the lessons or go freehand and create whatever you want.

This is very good art game for the Nintendo 3DS. The 3D effect is used to a great advantage by displaying people's faces in full 3D, which makes understanding depth and distances much easier. Recommended for people who want to get a better understanding of drawing and painting.

My son has really got into art this past year, so I purchased this game for him. He LOVES it. Both myself and my partner have also had a play on this game and were equally as impressed with it!It really helps your hand-eye co-ordination too!Hours of fun!
