Deliberated over whether to spend a hefty chunk on a mesh router. However, so glad I did. The solution (RBK20 one satellite) has been great for our situation Which includes going through previous external walls (extension), and previously poor upstairs coverage, both devices are setup downstairs. Easy to set up using the free app, once I knew that changing a super hub 3.0 to a modem meant it got a diff IP address, who knew ?‍♂️. The app is is very good and now includes a speed checker. It’s easy to see devices and pause/connect if need to manage and the only downside I see is some deal netgear have with a Disney child monitoring thing which looks good but another expense (not done that as trying to teach kids self discipline anyway). It also comes with a bitdefender security test period. So what problem did it fix for me? In short poor wifi coverage/black spots. I switched back to virgin from a shocking test year with Vodafone (highly unstable if you ask me). Back on virgin we went for the 200mb thinking this will now be great, and it was, but very intermittent which was equally useless as Vodafone at times having to switch phone to 4g to load a website/app data ?‍♂️, very bad. Many, many restarts/switch offs. Turns out the virgin super hub 3.0 (after researching online) is just a rubbish wifi router, a common theme. My brother recommended looking at mesh routers and specifically Orbi but did warn me it’s expensive but fixes the the virgin super hub 3.0 (they also had a similar virgin router issue). Anyway, bought the RBK20, switched the super hub to be in modem only mode and it’s been fantastic. There are 2 of us currently working from home in COVID-19 world with many Video conferencing meetings and it’s not dropped yet. It’s improved the wifi set up that much I’ve completely forgot cost of the solution as Orbi just works and a bonus is the wifi reach into the garden, when the door’s opens. Still bitter that virgins router is pants as paying for that service, however I feel I’m now equipped to switch internet providers if deals come as I have a better wifi solution.I went with RBK20 as it was a cheaper option than the RBK50 which from what compels tell has more Lan ports but also supports faster speeds and a higher dedicated band (check the features for comparison as I’m no expert) . The interesting thing is I have an Xbox plugged into the Lan, on the orbi satellite and it considers that a wired device connection and the speeds on the Xbox, and to be fair, the various wifi devices are consistently the speed I’ve paid Virgin for (200mb, sometimes dip but think that’s channel traffic) and randomly sometimes higher ?. If you can afford it, it’s a great solution (check products and feature comparisons before buying though as you unique home setup may need something different).

I live in a multi-storey terraced neighbourhood, where everyone and their pets have their own WiFi signals being broadcast. Because of this congestion causing dropouts, several neighbours have opted to add repeaters to their networks, creating further congestion.I'd use my ISP supplied modem/router (both Virgin and Sky/NowTV), and generally they'd work fine, but I'd never get the advertised speed. Typically I'd get around half or so. On my 39Mbps NowTV connection, I'd see around 17Mbps, even standing right next to the router. Wired ethernet would give me around 37-38 so I knew it was a problem with the wireless signal.Even when watching streaming media (Netflix, etc),the signal would drop out and make the experience extremely irritating and futile. This needed to be fixed! I tried adding network boosters and repeaters (3 in addition to my router), but they seemed to create more problems by confusing my devices as to which to connect to (despite all sharing the same SSID and password). In many cases, the connection would just drop entirely. After doing a lot of research (and missing out on the Prime Day sale), I purchased this with the hopes of it resolving all my issues. And resolve them it did.Setting up was really easy. In the box you get the router and satellite(s) which look almost identical, and are fairly aesthetic. And you get the plugs, and a network cable to connect to your modem.Switch them on, connect to the default WiFi signal it's broadcasting, and change the settings as appropriate. The satellite didn't connect initially, so I carried on with the main router setup and it eventually just connected by itself. The first test was to see what speeds I was getting; I get a consistent 37-38Mbps from my 39Mbps connection to my phone, regardless of where I am, a significant increase from the 17Mbps previously. All of my devices connected without a hitch, and report a good signal.Ultimately, the only thing I can say is that the internet now just works... no slowdowns, no dropouts, just strong fast service. In fact, it makes me think how many times I used to phone customer services to complain about my speed, when all it took to resolve the issue was to not use their cheap routers, but to use this instead. The only complain I have is that the Orbi app itself takes several seconds to connect and verify the product details, etc. It's not as snappy as it should be, but there's little reason to use it once you've set up your network anyway. It'd also be nice if it had a WPS option/button on the app to allow for easy connecting additional devices instead of having to type the password every time. All in all, this has eliminated a constant headache I've had for years in my search for strong and stable WiFi. It was expensive, but ultimately worth it.

After a long time debating between this and the alternatives I decided to go for the RBK23 set of three to cover the whole house after moving to an old house with 4 bedrooms with thick brick walls where the virgin router wasn't able to get the signal to all parts of the house. After installing these it works wonderfully well, and we've got great signal and speed across the house. It works so well in the house I’m in that I ended up getting on for my mum and dad to improve the coverage in their house after a raft of issues trying to use powerlines and other systems (this purchase was the second set).Rough product overview so far:InstallationThis was easy enough after downloading the app.It was just a case of adjusting where they sit to give the best coverage across the house. Really useful how the app and actual satellites have a colour feature to give colour codes to show how well they’re working in the mesh network (White = good, amber = working but on the limit of range and magenta for offline or not working)UseWe have around 20 devices that connect across the family by the time you factor in everyone’s laptops, phones consoles, work devices, Casting, smart devices and tablets. (Crazy when I think about it). I'd say on average it's probably loaded with around 8 and it's never really broken a sweat. I would preface this with the fact that we have a good fibre connection from the internet service provider (Virgin Media), but we all get about 53mbs from the speed tests. Some useful settings in it to allow you to choose who connects and how. There’s a speed test in the app and it’s consistent with the online ones I’ve done to check.Across the group we use it for streaming, gaming, browsing and downloading often at the same time from different locations (keying into all three of the satellites) and it hasn’t been an issue.Seems to switch seamlessly between the satellites to find the best connection based on where you are in the house.Overall it just works away in the background since installing it for myself, I’ve only had to check it once or twice over almost two years.Any issues? (minor)Occasionally we’ve had the odd period where it’s ran slow, but it’s never been clear if it’s due to the service provider or the ORBI.For some reason it’s had some issues with the TiVo box with the second purchase where id occasionally doesn’t recognise it. I’ll be trying to see why as it might just be an issue with the connections. This may or may not be the ORBI and I’ll update this once I know.Sometimes the app forgets the password so make sure you have something memorable and register the emails when you do the initial setup.

Good news: Now I have this up and running it provides every corner of this large old house with brick internal walls with full 70mbps internet speed reliably. No other system I have owned has achieved that. It replaced a mess of router and powerline WiFi - replacing four AP SSIDs with a single SSID. After a loft extension the electrician had to install a secondary consumer unit, and this seems to have messed up my previous powerline setup. The Orbi arrangement is reasonably stable, although it does decide to swap the network map every two or three days - either both satellites connected to the "router" (base unit in AP mode in my case) or satellite 2 connected to satellite 1.This knocks out the internet for anything connected to satellite 2 for a couple of minutes. Wish it would just make up its mind! In my case the main barriers are front to back of the house so I have the base unit at first floor level at the front of the house next to my TP-Link router and incoming phone line. Satellite 1 is in the middle of the house also at first floor level. These two provide WiFi to the first floor, ground floor front living room and new loft room. The second satellite is ground floor back of the house in the kitchen which also provides WiFi to the main living room, which has a smart TV, games machine and usually at one or two other devices streaming video or audio over headphones. All in all very satisfied with the result.Setup was a real pig though! First of all there are almost Zero instructions in the box. What is there is designed for a more US style setup with the base unit used as a router connected to your "modem". Most UK users will use it as an access point connected to an existing VDSL router. After spending an hour or so working out how to log in and change to AP mode, I installed the two satellites. Everything seemed fine for about an hour then WiFi disappeared for about 20 minutes. It turned out it decided to update its own firmware - with no warning! I thought something was seriously up and rebooted everything several times. Luckily it managed to download and install the new firmware despite my inadvertent attempts at sabotage! I could easily have "bricked" the base unit. After that it has been pretty solid, much, much faster speeds and praise for the WiFi rather than the constant complaints from the family (wife and three demanding teenagers) I used to get.

Our WiFi is OK, but the devices in the bedrooms struggle with streaming movies and TV shows. To get the base station to see the satellite, I had to put them very close together and wait 10 minutes before they would recognise one another. Once this was done, I was able to move the satellite to the place I wanted it. According to the smartphone app which is required to configure the network, the connection speed of devices linked to the network ranges between 330-500Mbps, certainly much faster than the 56Mbps broadband connection into the house.I have another, unconnected, app on my phone that measures WiFi signal strength, and it shows the signal from the Orbi system to be 5-15dBm stronger than from my existing home WiFi,depending where I am in the house. In case you are unfamiliar with dBm, a change of +3dBm means the signal strength doubles (and -3dBm halves it), and a change of 10dBm means the signal is 10x stronger or weaker, depending whether + or -.The devices themselves are about 7" H x 6" W x 2" D (17.5 x 15 x 5 cm) and require a mains power supply to work. The base station also needs to be close enough to your broadband router to connect with an Ethernet cable (supplied). There are status lights running in a ring around the top that glow various colours during setup, but which do not glow during normal use, so they are suitable for use in a bedroom without a light disturbing you.As the Orbi network is new and separate to your existing WiFi, all your wirelessly connected devices will have to be configured to talk to the new network. It's probably worth configuring them to "forget" the old network so that they connect to the Orbi network as a first choice. The router uses Circle's content filtering and device control technology to allow parental control of browsing time and internet filtering, but only the basic version is offered for free on the router. This gives the network administrator the ability to filter or pause the internet to certain devices and to examine the browsing history of users. The premium version, paid for by monthly subscription, offers much more functionality. As this is not a review of Circle, I suggest you search on the web for "Circle on NETGEAR" for additional information. In summary, if your home has WiFi dead spots, this may cure them, but the extra cost is quite high.

The units come well packed and the quick start guide tells you to download an app which I did. From that point on I really could not understand the questions it asked. It started with a page asking if you need to install a new router with no help or other tips. Then it wanted me to setup my router for remote management and again I really could not see why.Anyway I did but it did not seem to help and the app also did not seem to say when to plug the units in.Eventually it did see the devices and I thought setup had completed.Later in the day I realised that things were not working as normal and the app for the orbi said the clients had 10.0.0.x range which was wrong as my network is the classic192.168.1.xOn further research I realised the main unit was also acting as a router and had created a new ip range and DHCP for wireless clients while my other items were still on the original network. This was upsetting my Wifi smoke detectors, heating controls and other devices that talk to the outside world. What I needed and expected was that these gadgets would be on my existing network and not create another one and the option to change this is not in the android app and only under advanced in the web interface. So from a PC I went to 10.0.0.1 and changed it into "AP Mode" and after it all restarted I was back to one network as before. And yes, after all that effort it seems to work and again my 8th picture shows the option page in the app and to me again it does not make clear that the top icon of the Orbi opens a page showing your units and what clients are connected. If I was doing this again, which I might using only the device web page maybe the best option which also successful updated the firmware on all units.

I got these to compensate for my dreadful WiFi coverage from my (TalkTalk) router. Whilst I have not been able to compare Orbi with other wifi mesh systems, I have absolutely no complaints about this item! Setup was very straightforward - the Orbi app guides you through every step. Performance is excellent - I now have wifi in every corner of my house (3 floors) and garden! Given the wifi strength of each of these units, I probably would have got away with a 2 unit Orbi system rather than 3, but I'm happy I (perhaps) over-specified.Wifi signal is strong and stable...everywhere. The units are fairly unobtrusive (if you can hid them on a book shelf behind some books!)and they certainly don't have any annoying LEDs that are on all the time (except the power LED on the back of the units - which we never notice, or when there is an issue - then the top of the unit lights up).A good bit of tech is something you set up easily, once and then forget about whilst it happily continues to do its job without you even realising. This system is that.We have the main router (RBR20) and two satellites (RBS20) providing both wifi and wired connections to a few devices.Note however that most Broadband providers in the UK provide routers that cannot be set to 'bridge' (modem only) mode...consequently the Orbi has to be set up in AP (Access Point) mode - I'm not sure what functionality is lost when setting as AP mode...but at the end of the day, we only bought this to provide string wifi (and a few wired access points) around the house - and it does that just fine.I love this system!

I rarely leave reviews but felt compelled to due to the ease of the set up and the resulting solving of wifi woes.Despite a fast 200Mbps connection, our house suffered from wifi blackpots, annoyingly in particular for a game playing teenager. We tried all the usual cheaper solutions, powerline cables, extenders etc but all were patchy and not particularly reliable. So I went for the triple version of this Orbi triple set, didn't think I would need the more expensive one.Set up was so easy I thought I must have missed something. My Virgin "Super"(lol)hub was in modem only mode already. I just downloaded the Orbi app and followed the instructions. This consisted of plugging in the base unit to the modem, scanning the QR code on that one, plugging the two satellites in, waiting 5 minutes for them to be found, then changing the ssid name and password (changed it back to the same as the old one I had so all devices connected back) and waiting another 5 minutes while it did its work and that was literally that. Other reviews have said it was tricky to set up, well all I can honestly say is I am baffled how this can be if all sets work like this one did.Everywhere in the home is now covered (4 bed house, stud internal walls). Where I was previously getting 8 - 10 Mbps in the farthest reaches of the house (and less than that in a couple of blackspots) I now have over 100Mbps coverage in every corner of the house. Not only that, I do not have to change wifi going into rooms with Powerline extensions. Very, very pleased indeed with this product, well worth the money.

Firstly I want to comment on the quality and reliability of the signal. This always varies, depending on the source of that signal, the thickness of walls and the distance from the origin to destination. All of these things will vary from house to house. Mine is a four bedroom house build in 2008. The walls are reasonably soundproof but do not obstruct signal. The footprint of the house is quite big but not enormous. My signal originates from a BT home highway and is strong and consistent although the box is now behind the curve. All of this should be considered and, if necessary, addressed, e.g. in an old house with thick walls, you may need a more powerful system than in a new house.Do consider this before purchase. You can buy additional satellites (at a price) or start with a more robust package with a stronger signal. Many have talked about the technicalities, but being willing to take your time, following the instructions slowly and carefully are probably the best way forward. Don't try to be too clever. If you do find the set up tricky, be ready to call support. It will depend on the operative with whom you speak to a certain degree, but I found them very helpful. I have used a lot of Netgear equipment in the past and have found mixed results with support, but for this equipment, I was very pleased. You may well need a firmware update so the time for that should be considered. It will depend on what has already been installed and the stock you get it from.Since setup, which I did not find arduous as it happens, I have good coverage throughout my house.

Steve's reviewAfter many months of putting up with poor WiFi in our home, I spent some time researching products. They ranged from power line adapters which are just unstable to other Mesh network brands. I live in a town house set over three levels with my wife working on the top level. Because she works on a computer all day and relies on good WiFi this has meant every task which should take minutes ends up taking 4 times longer and myself getting grief for the WiFi. In the end having researched probably far too many I decided on the Netgear Orbi RBK23. From when it arrived to me setting it up over three floors it only took me 20 minutes (that's how long my wife told me I had). It could not be easier, the instructutions were clear and simple to follow, even for someone like me who knows nothing about tech. I am with Virgin broadband on 200mbps and doing speed test am now getting over 200mbps on all three floors. The kids are now not complaining as they have great connections to their xbox and various gadgets. I know this device is a little pricey but it is definitely worth paying a little extra for the piece of my and not having to worry about it again. The app gives you information on what devices are on the system and which band they are using, you can also disable the kids tech at any time (bonus). There is probably loads more however I think they are above my tech knowledge, all I know is that I have great WiFi throughout the house, the kids and more importantly the wife are happy. Thanks Netgear Orbi, you have made my life much calmer and stress free.

I am English though I live much of the time in Sao Paulo, Brazil where it is almost impossible to buy Netgear products - I have used Netgear for at least fifteen years and always found their products well made and reliable. I am currently renting a two-storey house of some 2,000 sq feet on two floors (reception room, kitchen, and large utility room on the ground floor, and three bedrooms and two bathrooms on the first floor). The mains voltage is 110V. Firstly, I telephoned Netgear to determine whether the supplied 240V mains power supplies with the RBK23 system would work on 110V, and was told they did. Happily I can confirm they do. Setting up was very easy.I connected the main Orbi router to one of the four ethernet ports at the back of the existing router, and turned on. Instantly the signal reached much further than before. I then installed a satellite upstairs in the master bedroom, and it locked on to the Orbi router immediately and extended the signal upstairs. I used a second satellite in the utility room to extend the signal into that room as well as the kitchen, and again it was a quick and easy process. Now my family can connect numerous devices at the same time, use them in any location in the house at maximum download and upload speed, and we are all happy. A truly great product, well worth the money.

Netgear have for a long time provided reliable network kit. This product being no exception, after connecting it all up and choosing AP (Access Point) rather than router. This means my router settings do not physically change, the new satelitte router just now provides a new wireless SSID (access point). The only real downside to this is you will have to connect all your devices to this new access point (as opposed to your routers old access point name). After setting the satellite orb on a different floor the connectivity remains connected. You can add as many wireless devices as you like (phones, laptops, TVs etc) and the connectivity speed remains high. This is due to the technology between the orbs.Other cheaper alternatives tend to lose speed the more devices in use. A bit like the old days of internet bandwidth where it was faster at certain times of the day (contention ratios). The orbs (and the power adapters) are big but they do look modern and therefore dont stick out as much as other things, apart from the power adapter which im sure you can hide behind something. When purchasing the orbs you would be best to check the price of some of the bigger packages as you may find they are not much more and in this case at least you have room for expansion at a later date if required.

I did balk at the price of this mesh network device, even though I got it at a sale price. I thought long and hard and decided to go for it, despite mixed reviews re set up and effectiveness. I'm so glad I did!I don't understand how people have had difficulties setting it up, it was so easy. The firmware update completed in about five minutes, setting up the two satellites took about 30 minutes, as I had to move them to get the best connectivity to the main Orbi. You can configure so many settings, but I only changed the password and set up a Guest password. I'm not very techie so didn't bother with any of the advanced settings. The app is brilliant, you can see the network map and it tells you which devices are connected to which satellites. You can even turn off access to devices from the app (handy way of getting kids to do their chores, by denying them access to Wifi!).I've posted a pic so you can see the size of the Orbis, a friend bought one about 2 years ago and his is a lot bigger than mine, so they've downsized the units. The phone in the pic is an iPhone 6 or 7. They're quite unobtrusive, the lights aren't too bright to disturb you if you have one in the bedroom.I would definitely recommend this, it's totally eliminated all the dead spots I had in my house.

I’m pretty sure, just like myself, a lot of people do quite a bit of research before purchasing anything, especially something as expensive as this. I did a lot of research into Orbi and read the odd few comments about people having nightmares setting it up, but in the end decided Orbi was a better option for our house rather than a new router. Well I can catagorically say it is a breeze to set up. I read complaints from people saying the instructions included in the box were poor, but in all honesty you don’t need them. As long as you download the app and register before setting up it walks you stage by stage through the whole process of setting up. I seriously had mine set up in less than 10 minutes, although it did take me a good couple of hours to set my devices up again as I have a lot of smart home stuff, but there were no issues with Orbi. One other thing I did stress about before buying was the limited number of Ethernet ports available with Orbi, again I didn’t need to worry as it was as straight forward as plugging in my old 5 port switch and away we went. All in all if you are debating about buying this just do it, it will not disappoint, and the coverage and increase in WiFi speed is amazing. I couldn’t give any stars for tech support as I didn’t need them.

Was looking for a new router following a move of our Virgin fibre connection downstairs. Wanted whole-house connectivity as my wife makes a lot of Facetime calls which don't always connect reliably and we had just had a medium size extension with lots of large steels. This unit appeared to offer the best solution and I had tried TP power adapters without much success and they had individual SSID's. I now have a router and one satellite working (the third will go in the extension when its completed) and yeh, full signal everywhere and full fibre speed.Setting up was not as straightforward as I had hoped and I had to revert to using the "sync" button option which worked a treat.I suspect that the problem was I thought the connections and linking between the router and satellite would happen faster than they did. So my advice is to first install the Orbi router and get that working and check it out on your devices. Then move on to the first satellite. If it doesn't connect automatically, just press the sync button on the router and then the sync button on the satellite and voila - happy days!Update - Just added the second satellite in our new extension by just plugging it in, switching it on and waiting 5 minutes. Seamless connection.
