I have tried to make this review as fair as I possibly can. Full disclosure; I'm a massive basketball (and NBA) fan, so my opinion may be slightly biased. The positives;+ This might just be the best looking game on next gen right now. It's beautiful.+ It's a challenging game and if you're a fan of basketball it is VERY rewarding.+ The addition of a "story mode" is a step in the right direction, even if it is cheesy and using the same voice actor that they have used since 2011.+ The career mode (or "story mode" I mentioned above) is just incredibly deep, signing various sponsorship/endorsement deals like getting to design your own signature sneaker, being put on the cover of magazines, getting TV commercials etc all helps to absorb you into the life of a superstar in the modern NBA.+ Gameplay is great, defending now feels more "fluid" (with guys who are supposed to be good defenders) and it's harder to score, which is the way it should be imho.+ The game modes are much improved, I already covered the career mode.+ The animations are as close to flawless as I've ever seen, especially for the "superstar" guys like Kobe, Durant, Lebron, CP3, Melo etc. They all move exactly like they do in real life, it's great for an NBA fanatic like myself.+ The park mode is a lot of fun if you have others to play with, my only change would be for them to make servers for players of different levels so my 79 overall player doesn't end up in a park filled with 99 overall players. The negatives;- Character creation. The upgrade in graphics included scanning all of the players heads to make them look as real as possible (think L.A Noir), unfortunately this means that for your created character to look decent and not stick out too much, they couldn't let you create someone from scratch. Instead, what you are given is a selection of 30 preset heads, you can alter the hair and hair colour but you cannot change any other facial features (such as the size of the nose, cheek bones, etc). You can however change their wingspan, muscle definition, height, weight etc, you can also really give your guy a unique feel with the VAST selection of choices when it comes to moves like crossovers and fadeaways etc.- Small gameplay nuisances. Players with exceptional ball handling (Irving, Curry, Kobe, Rose etc) occasionally fumbling the ball and knocking it off their own feet, happens a little too often for my liking. It's still too easy to spam the steal button in an online game to knock the ball out of an opponents hand.- Every time they patch something, they seem to break something else (if you're a fan of the franchise, you will be accustomed to this by now), there are small glitches which can be annoying such as never entering free agency in career mode and small graphic issues which wouldn't really be noticeable if the game didn't look as good as it does, because it's such a beautiful game, every little flaw stands out like a sore thumb. After the recent patch, my audio stutters and cuts out, this only happens very briefly though (fraction of a second) but it can be annoying if commentators are cut off mid-sentence etc.- Difficulty. There are two parts to this, first of all, if you haven't played a basketball game before or are not familiar with the sport, you will find that there is a STEEP learning curve. In career mode you will be brutally punished for the smallest mistakes. The other side of it is the difficulty settings, the higher the difficulty, the dumber your team mates becomes. That's literally the difference, usually the opposing A.I would get smarter, instead, they just make more shots and your team mates suddenly become below average defenders and position themselves poorly on offense and even stop boxing out on occasions.- You cannot sim games in career mode. There are 82 games in a regular NBA season, plus the playoffs. Depending on what quarter length you choose (I go with 10 minutes), that's roughly 3280 minutes (54 hours) spent in-game, throw in stoppages and the cut scenes, the firs season of your career could take just under 60 hours to complete. It's like a full blown RPG.- Online connection. For MOST game modes, you need to be connected to the internet to play them, this is because of the virtual currency (VC) which you earn for playing games, career mode requires you to be connected to the server at all times unless you want to have an offline career (which is messy and I wouldn't advise).- MyTeam (the NBA2K equivalent of Fifas ultimate team) no longer allows you to buy players outright (using VC) to improve your team, everything is now done through packs and it's pot luck as to who you get in the pack. So don't go planning your starting five just yet.- Micro-transactions. These are completely optional, but at the rate that you earn VC (virtual currency), it will take you a very long time to level up your career mode player/character. 2K definitely "nudge" you in the direction of buying virtual currency with real world money to upgrade your character quicker. The problem is, everything uses VC. If you want to play MyGM (think manager mode on Fifa) then it costs VC to upgrade your managers skills and attributes, you have to spend VC to upgrade attributes which then unlock abilities which you have to buy with VC and then every time you want to use those abilities you have to spend VC to use them. It is a tedious process. My advice; get the smart phone app, you can net two or three thousand VC from the "pick and win" and "mystery envelope" things alone. Also, follow Ronnie2k on twitter for"locker codes" which usually unlock VC.

This review may sound like I don’t like the game but nothing could be further from the truth, so I’ll start with the positives. I own a PS4 and Xbox One and of the next-gen games I’ve played to this point, 2K14 and Forza 5 are the two that stand out as making me feel like “this is next-gen” when I play them. For both games, the gameplay is familiar while at the same time I can feel the difference. When a screen is set you can feel the weight of it. Spacing feels better and more meaningful. Last but not least, it is visually stunning. Someone stopped by my home while I was in the middle of the game and as they passed by the TV they said, “that looks real”. It is a step forward and when in a game I have no complaints at all.If you love basketball you’ll probably love the way this game feels when you play it.All that great stuff said, when you get to the game modes, it feels like a free-to-play game filled with microtransactions trying to get you to spend money. Now if 2K wants to make this series a free download and fill it with microtransactions then I’m all for it, but after spending $60 for a game I don’t want to feel like I need to buy at least $20 worth of VC to make it fun. To elaborate, the old modes have been revamped, so what used to be franchise mode is now MyGM. This makes running a franchise like a pseudo MyPlayer mode with the GM being your MyPlayer. To make lineup changes you have to have opened up level 1 coaching, which cost 500 VC. There are multiple areas the GM has to upgrade from Training, Coaching, Scouting, and so forth where VC will need to be spent to upgrade your GM attributes. Some of these things just add additional bonus’ to your franchise like players recovering faster from injuries, but as stated about the lineup, some of these things are basics that you shouldn’t need to spend VC to be able to do affectively. In essence your ability to run a franchise will be greatly impacted by how much VC you get. Just like your MyPlayer experience is greatly impacted by how much VC you acquire. That’s the main drawback to this game. There needs to be better balance between how much VC needs to be spent, what VC should be used for, and how much VC can be earned for free in a reasonable amount of time. There is a difference between using microtransactions as a way to add a bit of additional income and making a game built around microtransactions. This game seems to be the latter. When paying for a game it should be expected that the player should be able to feel as though they get the complete experience without feeling the need to purchase extra. I don’t get that sense with this game unless you have countless hours of free time to grind for VC. If this is the direction the franchise is going then they need to consider simply going free-to-play then I could spend $75 on VC and it’d feel justified.

I haven't played a basketball game since NBA Live 10 and I have to say I can finally see what everyone loves about the 2k games. I started out last gen with NBA Live 07-08 and I was one of the few that really liked them for the arcade feel and how easy they were to play and get though quickly so you could get through a season quickly. I did have NBA 2k7 and 2k9 but found them too clunky and hard to score in however NBA 2k14 changes everything. I know the 2k games have been well liked for many years now and they definitely did not disappoint on their next gen debut. The graphics out of the gate are nearly easily confused with the real life players and courts and also the crowd and benches and coaches look great too, especially compared to other sports games on the Xbox One which don't look as good nor are as all around detailed.I don't care for the menus much at all or how you have to be in the game modes to access most of the features you'd normally be able to access form the front menu but it's not much of a con considering the game looks and plays great. I don't know everything about running plays in basketball but it is much easier to pick up and play compared to those older 2k games I had. It reminds me of MLB The Show in the way that I find the normal (or whatever the average difficulty is) very challenging and the higher up ones nearly impossible to be competitive in. I am getting better on whatever difficulty I'm playing on and I do like the challenge as it seems it's not one of those games that are super easy to master even on the hardest level. The only mode I've tried is the Season mode but I've only heard good things about My Career and I'm sure it will be even better next year and more features will be added back in. I'd like to see a bit more lines added in the commentary so I don't hear the same ones over when I'm playing as the same team but compared to other sports games this commentary is on a totally different level and sounds much more authentic, flows better, and has more emotion than other games. Again I'm sure in future releases it will get even better.NBA 2k14 started out great with the stellar graphics, gameplay, and realism so I'm sure all the future editions will be among the best experiences in sports simulation games. However I don't buy most sports games every year and since this one is so good I might not be interested in NBA 2k15 or might buy it used a lot cheaper. If you love NBA though this game is worth it and from what 2k has shown so far NBA 2k15 and all the future ones will all be worth getting as well.

After playing NBA 2k14 on XBOX 360, I was afraid that I would have to turn my back on 2k sports. After buying it and playing it on XBOX ONE for several days now, I can say that I was wrong. The game is absolutely stellar and 2k sports is getting closer to blurring the line between reality and animation. First, as I said, the graphics are absolutely amazing. Everything is so smooth and there are very few hiccups which cause unrealistic motions. Second, the controls are so seamless. I still have not mastered the isomotion capabilities, but as I get better, I see that the players I control don't pause or enter uncontrolled animations. They actually respond to what you tell them to do.This makes it especially fun for players like Derrick Rose and Lebron who are amazing finishers and can do all sorts of things getting to the basket. Third, the players/coaches have realistic personalities. Instead of messing with sliders or other statistics, you have points of emphasis. These points are basically the same things a coach would tell his players during a timeout: "Feed the post," "Crash the Offensive Boards," "Limit Perimeter Shots," etc. Similarly, players respond positively and negatively when they are either delighted or sleighted during a game, respectively. If a star doesn't get the ball enough, he grows cold. There are more positives, but I'm sure you are more interested in seeing some of the negatives. I think the biggest negative is the statistics that go into shot success. Stephen Curry would not miss 5 or 6 open three's with a perfect release. So when playing him, I shouldn't either. Also, silly violations like goal tending a kicked balls are so abundant. On any given 7 minute quarter game, there will be 4 or 5 of each (if not more). Some of the other negatives are more personal (my opinion on new career mode and the park) so I'll let you judge that for yourself.Overall, a stellar game. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves to play basketball games and loves a more realistic and flowing game.

4 star because its a fun game that it taking most of my One game time between Forza and Ghost.Ups: Graphics are major upgrade. Story mode in myPlayer is so much more involvement. In depth of the myGm is crazy, so much more then your normal association.Downs: Only one which with the upgrades, is able to keep the 5 stars. myPlayer is my favorite mode but not the story mode. Its the multiplayer. On the 360 (or PS3) you join your locker room or friend and instantly queue a random 3v3 or 5v5 and with in 10 seconds (more for 5v5) your finding a match and syncing in. That being said, it only takes a minute if that to start a myPlayer multiplayer game, with friends or without. Now, next gen. They f'ed this part up, bad. They call it the Park and I can understand the realism they were going for but it wasn't thought of enough. I now have to call "next" and wait for a game to be over and hope others join me in the next game. A game can last average....8 minutes? So now I have to wait 8 minutes compared to the 10 secs of finding a random game??? gtfo with that. On top of that, its a call next method meaning if your with friends, someone can beat them to calling next....I've emailed customer support about this issue and they replied they are aware and trying to fix. We will see.If they fix that part to be identical to the prior gen this would easily be a 7 star game outta 5.

Title says it. The myGM mode is great fun, online [after the patch] works flawlessly and myPlayer sucks you in for many many hours. I have played all NBA games (Since Live 2000) and I can safely say that this one is by far the best.Offtopic: Feel free to add me on psn since PS4 allows 1000 friends (just write Amazon or something along those lines in request) ID: Tii__ (double underscore)Also let me clarify as to why it's 4* rather than 5 - MICROTRANSACTIONS. VC (Virtual Currency) is no secret within the 2k franchise but they are, obviously, optional. To max out your player's stats and myGM level you would need no less than 250,000 VC,on top of that a trophy for the online mod is present where you have to obtain the full collection of the '13-'14 players. That is A LOT of cards. To do that you'd have to spend [my guess] no less than another 500,000-750,000 VC. In short - you have to spend over £400 if you want to "complete" everything or you can just spend 1,000 hours (I'm confident with my estimate) grinding the coins, your call. All in all - the game is good just the VC payouts could be better.

Without a doubt the best sport based game on the market. If you are looking for that one game that shows your friends why you just blew $500 on a Xbox One, this is a must have game for you. This is easily the best looking next gen game to date and it plays as great as the current ten versions of NBA 2K14. While playing this game I couldn't help but smirk at all of the realistic animations that draw you into the game even more. For instance, when I went to the hole as Lebron James and had to make a very difficult shop while most of the opposing team hung all over me. Lebron ran down the court looking at the ref and hitting his forearm, indicating that he was fouled. When you make foul shouts you step back to get fist pounds from your teammates, when you hit a big shout you will see your player yell in excitement. If you are mildly interested in basketball then this becomes a must have game for you, also it doesn't hurt that this is without a doubt the best looking launch game on either system(PS4 or Xbox One).

I'm rating this 5 stars because NBA 2k can do no wrong in my eyes. They continue to produce the best and only basketball franchise year after year. EA is attempting to bring back their basketball game but we all know how that will work out for them. I have played this for the 360 and it was awesome. On the Xbox One, it will be even better!****Update 11/23/13****Exactly as I expected, this game is unbelievable. I received this game yesterday along with my Xbox One. The graphics are incredible and the gameplay itself is very authentic. My only gripe about this game is the menu navigation is piss poor. If their goal was to make it extremely confusing and impossible to find anything (ie.Roster Downloads), they nailed. But when you do eventually find what you are looking for, it is totally worth it.So for Jack and Warren's comments on this review...yes definitely so :)

I haven't owned a basketball game since bulls vs blazers and have only been to one NBA game in my life. I noticed a few friends online playing this and laughed at them....they swore it was awesome and because i bend to peer pressure, I bought it.I have to admit it is a great game....the graphics are amazing and looks almost like the real thing. Upgrading your player/team skills is neat-o! It does take ridiculously long to upgrade if you solely rely on earning VC through gameplay. I was getting annoyed of stinking and spent $10 to raise some skills.I've been playing career and gm mode; both have been a lot of fun. So bottom line, even a guy that doesn't like basketball can enjoy this game!Main reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of needing to be connected to 2k servers to play career/gm and the low amount of VC you earn during normal play.

Wow! Wow! Wow! If you get a chance to play this run a replay and zoom in on someone with a beard or a lot of facial hair. I can see the individual hairs on Lebron. Also this game took only about 5-10 min to install enough to get to the game menu and then you can still do a quick play with Miami VS San Antonio while the game installs. Ryse took way too long. The AI in this game is what makes it next gen also. I hate Tony Parker plays like Tony Parker and he is just a sneaky. Great game. I haven't touched the career mode yet but this one is a must have for XBOX One or PS4. Go buy it, rent it or find someone with this game a see for yourself. You will not be disappointed. A+

First off im not a huge basketball fan, i usually watch some playoff matches a year and thats it, i've been buying the nba 2k games on and off for the past 10 years, and have to say this game really is top quality in every way, the game feels like its got attitude, gameplay and graphics are amazing, the presentation and commentary as always are very good, with even a quick half time and full time interview with coaches and players, the soundtrack to the game is also impressive, i downloaded the demo for nba live, and its not even a competition, nba 2k14 is the best basketball game ever made in my opinion and one of the best sports games ever made.

18.1.2014

Changed my review for this game basically because I've actually learnt how to play it to A degree, yes it is annoying at times, and very difficult to learn but underneath all this there's a great basketball game, the worst part is the dense AI, sometimes loose balls will bounce in front of your teammates and they won't pick it up, instead a supercharged opposition computer controlled player zooms in and picks it up, I turned down the AI sliders a bit for things like turnovers /rebounds to make the game more playable as rebounds would 80% of the time fall to the offense AI if CPU team or the defence AI if CPU is protecting the basket.

25.6.2014

This game was shipped with the greatest speed ever! So thank you!Overall, NBA 2K14 is the best sports game I've ever played. 2k really did well on this mod regarding the gameplay, and executing on realism unlike never before in the franchises releases and pitiful attempts by EA Sports. The only sucky part is the whole VC scheme. I feel at times forced to buy VC in order to enjoy the other game modes beside Quick Matches. They definitely have work to do in that regard, but overall, the gameplay and graphics are breathtaking! I've never been a hardcore gamer, but I can definitely see this happening with 2k!

10.2.2014

The game was everything i expected to be, it is better then fifa with things off the court, such as having a god relationship with the team and earning your position. The graphics are amazing and there are no faults that i have seen.My 2 downsides are that it is hard to score compared to other games i have had you think you are in a good position and it doesn't work out, also you don't get to make your own face you have to choose from over 20 and for me i don't think any of them look close to me.I enjoy the game, but if you love to score like i do it takes a while to pick up on how to do it

This product was given to my grandson, I hear he plays it most everyday. That is when he's on the system which is quite often. (Every day) Course his parents don't let the game or games interfere with his studies, but I know he loves this game, and NBA 2K14 which I also gave him. He loves sports and the XBox One. Service was even better then expected when we ordered thru Amazon. I believe they the postal service delivered it on a Sunday. We were expecting a Monday or Tuesday delivery. We also ordered the NBA 2K14 and the XBox One, along with the control charger base all in the same bundle.
