I purchased this canteen to see if it would be a viable replacement for the usual OD plastic GI canteens. I was looking for something that would be backwards-compatible with all my older 'legacy' stuff...GI canteen cups, GI canteen pouches, etc. While the GI canteens are ok, they tend to hold smells/flavors and since they are opaque you can't tell if anything is growing in them. The Nalgene canteens seemed like a good idea for replacement. The Nalgene canteens *do* fit the older style canteen covers. (Newer, MOLLE-style, covers from aftermarket vendors like Spectre and Blackhawk will be a better fit if using a canteen cup. More on that in a moment.) The only detractor is that if you use the GI cover, you still have that bright blue cap sticking out of the cover. Two minutes with a black Sharpie can fix that or you can simply head up to REI and swap out for a different color cap.One major issue is that the Nalgene canteen does not fit into the GI canteen cup as well as it should. The result is that the cup/canteen combo is just too large enough to fit in the GI cover. In the aftermarket covers, theres more room and flexibility, but then you cant use your older gear. Other than the canteen cup issue I found the Nalgene canteen to be, for me, a better choice than the GI one.Summary: quality is excellent, durability should be great, taking away one star for not fitting into the canteen cup as well as the GI canteen. The Nalgene canteen is slightly heavier than the GI, and, of course, it's a bit more expensive. However, I think it's worth it for not having unseen mold grow in your canteen and eventually work its way into your gut.

I think this USA made, BPA free bottle, particularly for the price, is an incredible buy. I wanted a narrow mouth water bottle that I could see how much water I’ve been drinking, that wasn’t too big or heavy with full water in it and that wouldn’t break or leak in a bag. I can see that over time maybe the plastic link from the screw top and the bottle itself may deteriorate or tear if I am really rough with it or it falls off my bike basket and I don’t look after it. That said the bottle is super duper durable and would maybe only suffer some scratches and if the plastic link broke, the screw top would still screw on fine, it just wouldn’t be as convenient. The color is chic and I’d consider buying the golden and the red ones too, but this one will last me a long time. A long handled cleaning brush is needed to clean it and the mouth makes it a little hard to clean high up, but I only use tap water and drink 2-3 bottles worth through out the day so nothing is ever stagnant due to how I’m using it. The shape is different from a cylindrical bottle, which I think makes it look classic and cool. Some folks maybe won’t like it because it doesn’t fit in a side bottle pocket or backpack pocket and it doesn’t fit in a bottle holder on a bike, but I just throw it in my bag as I commute on bike and don’t have to worry about it spilling. id consider buying the canteen carrying bag with strap for a long walk in the future. I feel like it’s a perfect in between ounce size and the fact that you can see how much water you’ve been drinking really inspires me to go and grab another bottle full to finish throughout the day. I like it...it’s rad!

These are the "GI water bottle" size, now made in sturdy plastic. When you handle these, you realize that the government spent some time thinking about the ideal size/shape for a water bottle. These are easy to handle, easy to fill, easy to drink from and can be tucked into the side of your pack or carried on your hip with an appropriate carrier, etc.The only thing wrong with them is the same thing wrong with all of these water bottles - they weigh a lot in comparison to the cheap, disposable water bottles that can be had for a fraction of the price and are durable enough to last through many many refillings. You also have to be careful about maintaining them - which basically means keeping the cap off when they are empty,so mildew etc. can't form on the inside which would then be hard to clean because of the narrow opening. But as long as you rinse them out after you use them and store them with the cap open, they work great.UPDATED: I just bought a few more of these. I have several different kinds of water bottles, the ultralight collapsible kind, re-purposed gatorade bottles, regular Nalgene bottles, hydration bladders, etc. Honestly, when I am in the outdoors, I like using these more than any other kind of water bottle I own. They aren't practical for town where they won't fit in a car cup holder, or the narrow water bottle sleeve of some small backpacks. But they fit in the external sleeves of both my hiking day pack and my backpack just perfectly, They hold up really well and they don't impart weird taste into your water like some other brands do. As long as you know they will fit your pack, just get one.

I do a lot of hiking, and have tried many different types/brands of water bottles over the years. I ordered this canteen because I needed a water container that would 1) hold at least a quart 2) offer more durability than a generic gas station bottle of bottled water and 3) fit into the water carrier mesh on my Kelty Redwing 50 (2013 model) without stretching the mesh out so much that nothing else would fit snugly. This canteen is great on all accounts. I remember reading some reviews someplace that suggested the canteen feels a little large to hold onto, and I would say that this might be correct information depending on the size of your hand. For me, it fits fine, and I'm 6' 0" with an average hand size.It is slightly textured - not enough to really feel the texture, but just enough to get some grip with sweaty or moist hands. I haven't noticed any leakage issues, but I tend to keep mine right side up.(I just picked mine up, it still had water stored from a month or so ago, and it was on its side... no leakage!)For those concerned about weight, it is a little heavier than other water storage options, but the trade-off here is ruggedness. I'm pretty sure I could dropkick it and it wouldn't puncture. I won't be trying that, but I will try to remember to update this review if my opinion changes.

I bought a couple of the new military issue BPA free “soft & flexible” 1 quart canteens from EBay.I filled them with water and let them sit for 2 or 3 days. Then I did my taste test by drinking some of the water. I was very disappointed to find that the water had a funny “plasticky” taste. So I decided to take a gamble and purchase the Nalgene canteen. Guess what? No funny taste in the water like I experienced with the BPA free military canteens. Finally my search is over. Since buying that first Nalgene canteen I’ve since purchased several more. I love them. Some have complained that they aren’t sturdy. Look, if you jump up and down on them you’re going to crush them. Anyone can destroy it if they want to.Suggestion: Just treat the canteen normally (take care of your stuff) and you’ll have no trouble with them. I’m going to buy a few more because I’m phasing out my old Vietnam era green plastic canteens. Oh, and there’s no trouble with the Nalgene canteens leaking.

Hm, I guess I'm writing another review with "Just what I needed" as the subject. Well, it is! Like many people when I pack my packs it gets full and when I try to shove a round water bottle into the side pocket it gets super tight. A round bottle is actually a very inefficient use of the pouch since the middle of it presses in on the pack and the sides are basically big gaps. Use a canteen shaped bottle and it fits MUCH better. This is not rock hard and is kind of a more rigid rubbery type material so I'm curious how much abuse it can take compared to the typical Nalgene. The only downside I can think of for my needs is I bring Aqua Mira tablets and they require 4 hours out of the light so I have to shove this bottle into my pack if I ever use those.Still, that's my secondary water sanitizing method so I probably won't need that feature and it's certainly no dealbreaker. My Nalgene bottle weighs 6.35oz and this weights 4.7oz so it also helps you save whole 1.65oz.

To start, I'm a Soldier, we use camelbaks a lot because you have more water, good taste, etc... The issue canteen tastes like plastic, you all know the story... I swear by these canteens. Yes they're cool with the Color and being clear, but I'm talking about the utility. They don't taste like plastic, they're flexible so you don't get sore hips if you were them on unarmored kit, and the cap is on/off easy. The mouthpiece is wider so it's easier to drink out of them, and of course they're super durable. I own six of them over the course of six years. There are two drawbacks for military use: no NBC cap, leadership who may say you can't use them. Keep your old canteens handy if any NBC is remotely possible.I carry one of my kit and half fill my camelbak. The only you reason you won't end up just using this as a personal water bottle is if you're afraid of looking too hooahhooah/moto. If you have to carry canteens, these are the ones to carry.

I've been using a pair of the US ARMY type bottles in a GI Surplus belt and carrier for the past two years during camping trips and summer camp.I'd gotten used to a certain amount of leakage, and funky taste from those GI bottles. It is what it is, right? I used that system because I liked the fact that I could carry a couple of GI cups/camp stove inside the carriers, and that they're easier to carry in the GI carriers than a common Nalgene bottle without a carrier, which seems to be what most of my Troop uses. Awful. No idea why they do that. Now Nalgene comes out with THESE! Fantastic! You can actually SEE the liquid level in them, they DO NOT leak (so far), and the funky taste is GONE. Plus, when cold weather comes, I can pour hot water into them and drop them into my sleeping bag to keep warm at night. BONUS!!!!

I bought this canteen after trying two other GI style canteens that leaked (one was a cheap knock-off, the other mil-spec GI surplus). I really like it, I carry it in a GI canteen cover with ALICE clips. Some reviewers have voiced concerns over how resilient it is. A few weeks ago I dropped it on volcanic rock and it rolled down hill a good six feet or so. It got scuffed up a bit but no big gouges that would weaken its integrity. Like most folks, I try to take care of my gear but stuff happens. I like the cap. It gets a leak proof seal without having to gorilla-cinch the cap down. I also like the ability to check water level.I don't really need another canteen at this point but if I did I would get another Nalgene vs surplus mil-spec.

The water tastes great from this bottle. I like the attached lid, the loop that I can use to carry it, the shape because it fits better into a backpack. I like the fact that it does not leak and that it is transparent so I can see what's left. It is also easy to clean (dishwasher) and the narrow mouth is easy to drink from.Still only 4 out of 5 stars because I thought it would be the same material as the regular Nalgene bottles but it seems that either the material is different or it is thinner because if I press I can move the plastic a bit which I can't do with the standard nalgene bottle. That just makes me wonder if it is still equally sturdy. Also good to know that these are made in the USA.I would not buy them otherwise.

An outstanding replacement for the GI canteen that will most likely give you testicular cancer (if we listen to California). It will retain flavors from acidic flavor drinks if you use them with this canteen, best to stick with water and have a canteen cup (yes the GI ones fit perfectly) and mixing your flavor pack in that. Does not impact the flavor of your water as long as you wash it with dish soap and water before uses. Not the easiest thing to clean I ended up filling it half way with soapy water, stuffing a small wash rag in the mouth, capping it and shaking vigorously (those of you who use the “Shake Weight” as seen on TV know what I’m talking about) open it back up, turn it upside dow, pull the rag out, drain and rinse.

I recently got into the nalgene type bottles and couldn't be happier with this purchase. water doesn't have that certain taste that you always get with plastic surplus ones. it's also neat that it's more transparent so you can see exactly how much water you have. the stainless rothco style canteen cup will also nest with this canteen, even tho it's a little on the loose side. I use this setup with a molle canteen pouch that I put a $5 condor strap on it and it's perfect for a short day hike where you only need the bare essentials. holds this canteen with room to spare. all of the stuff mentioned can be found here on amazon.oh and the best part I didnt even know until it arrived is this canteen is made right here in the USA.

Had one of these before but it got lost during a job move. With the issue of reducing paper/plastic cup waste being a bigger issue now more than ever, this water bottle is an excellent contribution to the "Sporty & Reusable Water Bottle" trend. A tried and true classic design with durable plastic material, this water bottle keeps me hydrated and can take bumps like a champ (since I'm clumsy AF). The classic design allows it to easily fit with old military packs such as GI pouches and canteen cups if you plan to make it part of a camping/hiking/bug out pack. I'm thinking of buying another two more. One for the gym and one to keep in my car for road trips or outdoor activities. Good stuff!

This was a great product! I don't want to be like those all caps people telling you to get something and not to listen to the other reviews, though this was a great product. It was bigger than I expected but is still amazing! I ordered this with the GI canteen cup and the OD government nylon canteen cover. I loved the cup and the cover! Now this product is also very heavy duty! At first the plastic feels kind of flimsy. It is. But that doesn't effect performance it is still great and is very heavy duty. Now don't get too worried about the flimsiness because it isn't as flimsy as you think. All In all I loved this product and hope that anyone who read this review would think the same!

This is a winner of a canteen. Triton, BPA Free, Durable, will work well for a hike, camping, primitive and remote spots. While I'm no prepper, being prepared and practical is important. One for my car, one for my pack, one for my son, and one to spare. My son and I found ACU's pouches for these, and they fit great. I haven't tried a canteen cup with this yet, might be a tight fit, but will give it a try. This is not NBC, but for my uses, it's excellent. Transparency is helpful in many ways. I'll be ordering two blues and two coyote (for my packs). Half a dozen of these seems just right. Not a need but I will be trying a silicone ring and a sediment screen on a few of these.
