I'm a long-time owner of an MSR MiniWorks. I left it at a family's house and needed something for a backpacking trip. Saw this and gave it a shot.FILTRATION: It works well, I'm filtering at least a liter per minute with it. My hand got a bit tired after filling a 3L reservoir and a Nalgene 1L all in one go, but switching hands ameliorated that. You can filter some pretty nasty water and it comes out perfect. There's a small coarse filter at the inlet of the line, and then you pump the water through the microfiber filter. It gets >>99% of bacteria and protozoa, and it even deals with most viruses unlike the ceramic filters. Only downside is that it won't filter chemicals at all unlike the ceramics,so areas with a lot of pesticides or the like may be less suited. For the developing world with a lot of human waste, this is the way to go for the virus coverage. The taste is neutral; I didn't notice any plastic-y hints at all. It also allows you to use it like a LifeStraw which is a feature I enjoyed, and while a Sawyer Mini would allow you to pre-filter a reservoir, it would require multiple fills of the dirty water bag and this can be run continuously.STORAGE: I keep it in one of my hip belts on my pack which provides for easy access. It took seconds to pull out and put away. The only downside I identified: the soft rubber tube is a bit fragile as evidenced by a few small nicks after my first trip with it, nothing that compromised the inner lumen. I'll be getting a soft mesh bag to protect it since it doesn't come with one.CLEANING: There's almost nothing to do in the field. They recommend taking off the inlet hose and back-pumping once per six liters filtered to keep the pump reservoir clear of debris buildup; I did this every other time I used the filter. It's nice to not have to wipe off the filter periodically like you have to with the ceramic cartridge based filters.STORAGE: The device is easy to take apart. I run clean water through it, disassemble, and let everything dry out before storing. The manufacturer recommends running diluted bleach to sterilize everything between use and long-term storage.OVERALL: I'm impressed by this device and glad I made the purchase. As long as it lasts, it'll probably replace my old MiniWorks due to the smaller size/weight, ease of use, comparable filtration rate, and added virus coverage.

Lightweight and easy to use. I use it on day hikes to reduce the amount of water I need to carry. Not something for pumping water for a whole campsite but for personal use its good.Bottle based filters or the Sawyer mini type filters suffer from the issue of either having to lie down in the dirt and drink from the water source. Or find some way of filling a bottle with water - which can be tricky or impossible in situations where the water source is not very deep.Because this has a hose it eliminates that problem."Normal" hand held filters you pump I find can be hassle because often there is nowhere to rest the pump when you use it. This filter is easy to use just holding it in your hand and squeezing. One traditional pump filter I had required a reasonable amount of force to pump downwards - which on unstable ground could be challenging.Only downside is lack of carbon filter means the filtered water can - depending on the source - taste rather funky!I pumped some water from a stream high in Snowdonia. Water was running clear in the stream but water was passing through a lot of vegetation on the way down. Filtered water had the taste of boiled cabbage water - probably bacteria free but not great tasting! The solution to this is the lightweight Platypus GravityWorks Carbon Element combined with a Nalgene 'Multi Drink' Bottle. The Nalgene 'Multi Drink' Bottle's top has a straw going down the middle. I removed the straw and attached the Platypus GravityWorks Carbon Element to it inside the bottle and its a perfect fit. And doesn't add much weight ( about 30g )Now I have fairly safe and good tasting water - with low weight and easy to use.

I was trying to save weight solo hiking and backpacking, so I didn't want to take my full pump filter. I like the squeeze bag/drip bag concept, and I have one, but at high altitudes they become useless. I know this for a fact because I spent 1/2 hour barely squeezing water out of one of those bags at 9000 feet plus elevation. I tried this three different times. When I got home at 300 feet, it worked perfectly every time. So I discovered the MSR Trailshot. No worries at all at any elevation. I used it at 10,500 feet. Just pump enough to fill the little reservoir and then keep pumping into your water bottle and within a minute a full liter. I used a wide mouth bottle so I wouldn't have to perfectly place the filter spout.I am so glad I found this filter. The bags are simply not reliable.

With limited space when camping out of a kayak, carrying large amounts of water is not convenient. This unit filters water for consumption quickly, but may not be comfortable for those with small hands. (Not a problem for me) It is one of the lowest price filter systems available as well as compact and light weight. The filter element is rated for 1000 liters, which should be adequate for several years in the amount of camping I do. A replacement filter element is available at about 2/3 the price of the entire unit, and I would probably replace the entire unit when a new filter is needed and not risk another part failing. The additional cost is not significant in my opinion.

Why did I not buy this sooner??! I used to lead expedition trips with the MSR Miniworks pumps with ceramic filters for years. They're great but need tending to. Then moved up to Guardian and was blown away by the speed and ease of maintenance but it was used for large groups and too expensive and large for solo-small groups. This TrailShot uses the same fiber filter technology as the Guardian at 14% of the cost! It is absolutely perfect for backpacking trips with a few friends or a solo mtn run. Maintenance couldn't be easier as you pump it in reverse to flush out the buildup. It literally couldn't be easier! I may be stocking up on these as I don't want any other filters.

I bought this for my husband for a 3 day backpacking trip with a group of his buddies. We are a backpacking duo and were both very excited for him to try it out.Overall he reports that it is a nifty little pump.Pros:First and foremost the pump works-- water is purified!Lightweight.Easy to pump a water bottle full.Cons:He did not think it was realistic to pump directly into your mouth as some of the videos show. After a while his hand got tired-- for a longer trip this would be a bigger issue.Price point could be lower for what it is.

Great portable water filter. I also have Sawyer filter but this one is more satisfying to use when on the go because you are actively pumping water, not standing around waiting for a gravity filter to drip. I use it for long mountain bike rides with groups. Everyone can fill their own bottles. Suggest making a small permeable stuff sack to transport and store it (so it stays clean and can dry).If you are camping, a drip filter like the Sawyer has advantages because it can clean your water while you do something else.

I bought this to replace a heavier pump and save on space in my bag. This was supposed be the backup while i planned to keep using my sawyer system, but for whatever reason the sawyer got plugged and the rate of flow slowed down. While i fully intend on replacing it, both i and my hiking companion had to use this one.It did a fantastic job filtering water at a quick rate and when it fails I'll buy another or a new replacement cartridge to go in it.

This is a great water filter. Small and conveniently fits in the top of my pack. Fills a 1 liter bottle in about a minute. I was going to buy the replacement filter as well, but it's only $15 less than the cost of the whole assembly. By the time the filter needs to be replaced, it will probably be time to replace the whole thing. The hose seems a little short, but a longer one would take up considerably more space, so it's a trade off.

I got caught on a long day hike in Yosemite without enough water. I bought this right after and have taken it with me. Sometimes I don't need it, but it's so lightweight and simple it's a great add to my day pack. When I have used it, it works great and efficiently. I wouldn't take this as my primary filtration on a multi day hike. It takes time to use, but for a single person on a day hike it can't be beat.

when you consider the alternatives; this device might come out on top. Consider that it's not always practical to carry dirty water instead of clean water as that suggests you might be miles away from a water source when the filter malfunctions. This device gives you a chance to filter water at the source and you can still filter from a bottle just not in the same way.

MSR has a reputation which can’t be matched. It delivers quality products which last a lifetime when cared for. The trail shot is no exception - it’s easy to use and feels solid. I used this on a 4 day hike in the Cairngorms, Scotland, and it was fantastic. Please ensure you follow all instructions and watch the videos online for the perfect flow rate.

This thing kept me hydrated and parasite free while drinking river water up in Alaska for a week. Filters out all sorts of bad stuff including discoloration and iron taste from old well pumps. Only disadvantage is that the silicone hose is a bit short, so if you use it as a straw you have to bend down pretty low to dip the distal end in that H20

Awesome piece of kit, ideal for bike packing or even just long days out on the bike/walking in the countryside. Simplicity to find a stream and fill your water bottle, pump is at first fast, then after a few uses slows to tolerable. Needs a truly aggressive shaking to clean as directed. Light, small, efficient piece of gear. Well recommended.

I used this on the West highland way, which is a 98 mile hike through the Scottish highlands and this little filter never missed a beat. Easy to use and at the price it's unrivalled in its class for filtering capability. Removes 99.999% of bacteria and 99.9% of Protozoa and only weighing 142g. You can't go wrong for the price.
