For those of you that are sick and tired of having to work with bent stakes, you're going to absolutely love these stakes. You can beat the heck out of them and they're not going to bend at all. When I was putting one in it hit a rock and I just kept pounding it (I didn't realize it was stuck on a rock), and it didn't bend. The top started to get squished in a bit, and the pointy end started to flatten a bit, but all-in-all, the stake took the beating without bending. In my 30 years of camping, I can't think of any stake that would have been able to withstand that abuse without bending. Also, the reflective cord on the end is nice when you're walking around the tent at night with a flashlight. Now,everyone here just raves about these stakes, and they are good, but they're not great, and here's why... Normally a stake would have a little hook on the end so you can secure guy lines and webbing with ease. Unfortunately, all these stakes have is that little notch taken out of it near the top, and that notch is REALLY SMALL! If you stake these in and try and secure the corner of a tent that has 1" webbing (which I think is standard), well, that notch wasn't really made for that and it's rather awkward trying to get it to hold. Once you get it in and secure it will probably hold fine, but it's getting there that's the problem. Guy lines are a bit easier to secure since the line isn't so wide and they can settle into that notch better (so long as you can angle the stake down low enough), but that doesn't work flawlessly every time either, and that awesome reflective cord just gets in the way. I noticed that I had to stake things down further than normal so there would be enough pressure from the webbing for it to stick and stay in the notch. If you don't stake things down REALLY tight, they'll just slide right off the stake with the stake staying in the ground, unlike a regular tent stake. I have to stake my tent down MUCH tighter than what would be considered normal, and it seems like it may cause a great deal of excess wear and tear on the tent seams. The guy lines are fine, those are supposed to be really tight. When you're ready to take your tent down, just pull the stakes out by the loop and they'll slide right out. That part works really well. These are the only stakes I'll use now, simply because they don't bend and can take some serious abuse, but they are a little difficult to use and to stake down the corner of tents. I bought 3 packs of 8, so 24 in total. I bought a tent stake bag from R-E-I for a few bucks and it holds 24 of these without a problem (but no more than 24).If you have any questions about these stakes, just ask. I'll try and respond promptly.

Unike some other MSR Tent Pegs you will receive sufficient Pegs for your 2 man tent (8 pegs). (not including optional Guy Lines). The Pegs are strong well designed and with the added 'peg pulls' are easy to remove from moderately hard ground. The design resists bending and the coating should prevent tanishing, although I have only had the pegs for a short while so will report back after a year or so of use. MSR lettering and paint work was complete on the entire set. The Pegs have Blunted end show shouldn't puncture the tent peg bag. Each peg is 19cm long (7.5 inches) with a narrow 1cm wide head and 2.5 inch 'pull cord'. You may wish to purchase longer Guy rope tent stakes for your storm lashings.Very light and the narrow head means that these pegs need be inserted into the ground by using heel of the foot only (as difficult to get enougth pressure by hand without causing discomfort). I only wish that the actual MSR tents were supplied with these pegs as standard especially when you spend £200+ on the tent and are supplied with inferior/ heavier cylindrical basic design pegs. At present I have only used this pegs in mud/soil not sure how they will hold in loose sand or snow as narrow 'footprint' UPDATE: May 2015: Used on several occasions and still going strong, no bending, rust, paint chipping or other issues. Used only with feet to press into the substrate. Easy to clean, mud just slides straight off.

So far the sticks work. As mentioned before, they have a good support in sand and dirt.Further update to come after my week long backpacking trip.Update: Ok the second trip is done and the stakes performed perfectly. We had: wet send, rocky dirt, top soil. All of that with pretty consistent rain and wind. They lost some of their color and I'm fine with that. Using a wood stick or a mallet to set them didn't bend any of them, I of course didn't try to set them through rocks ?. Even in light top soil they held pretty well, my hammock's tarp was looser in the morning, but never failed on the top soil.I found out that I if you stick them with 2 legs of the Y facing in the direction of the load instead of only one, they will hold better. Also using the string of the tent our tarp in conjunction of the stakes string help and doesn't cut the strings.I was using a 15 to 20 degree angle while setting them up and it worked for me.I will be buying a 3 rd set for my kid tarp.I would recommend them to any one who wants a good, strong, not too expensive and way better than the stock stakes.

It was probably after I'd bent my 100th ground stake that I decided to go searching for an upgraded design. I don't know why it never occurred to me earlier. I've had a chance to use these stakes in several conditions, from grassy areas to typical ground to heavy rock/root terrain and so far, no problems. I'm not one of those silly folks that brings a hammer with to pound in a ground stake...I just find the nearest suitable rock and get it done. These have held up to the pounding and don't bend when I hit a rock or a tree root. I've experienced winds up to about 30MPH so far and no problems with the tent uprooting. That's the point, that's what it does and therefore was worth the (relatively)high price tag associated with them. About the only drawback I can think of is they didn't come with a nice stuff sack to contain them, but I had one (or 10) that worked just fine. I'm considering adding another set for staking out my rain fly, since the eight that come was just enough to secure my tent and I still have to use my old (comparatively lame) stakes for that job. Would recommend!

I had one to bend slightly with just hand force. Other than that I was very happy with them. These stakes are legit. A guy at REI recommended them when I told him the conditions I'd be camping in. Used them for two weeks while camping in a narrow canyon with gusts up to 30-40 mph. Staked my Alps Mountaineering tent into mushy sandy dirt and they held tight and never pulled lose once - actually needed to use my hammer to remove a few of them; that may be a con for some of you, but for me it means my tent will not be ripped up and carried away. I used a few to guy out my tent and I swear it was like my tent was made out of concrete! While others had there stakes ripped up and tents flattened by the wind - I slept soundly without tent in my face.I've used them several other times - hammering into harder top soil (a couple with large rocks embedded)and haven't had an issue with the neck bending or breaking (knock on wood). I ordered mine directly from amazon to ensure I received true MSR product and not some cheap knock-off.Highly recommend these mighty little guys!

I've been looking for solid tent stakes that don't weigh a ton. These fit the bill and some! Went camping with friends, we were set up and sitting by the fire by the time they showed up. Sure enough, big big rain storm comes in. The win and downpours were awful. I had a few spare stakes from my tent and as they struggled to bang in crappy stakes I grabbed my spares and easily hammered them into rocky-ish terrain to get the tent up quickly and with little water getting inside. The next night had another storm and one of their "not so great" stakes got loose and caused the rain fly to lift a little. Not on the side these GroundHogs were on!Really easy to take out of the ground as well. Rock, pull, done.Recommend for sure. I've bought more since I can tell these are a quick and easy guarantee that you can get your tent staked in poor weather and poor ground conditions! AND…they are a Christmas present for my tenting buddies.

Being an Eagle Scout, I have spent my fair share of time in the woods. While I love the mountains, my wife enjoys the ocean more so than the mountains, and I knew my standard shepard hook style stakes were not going to cut it on the sand. While I am no stranger to the MSR brand, and I have heard of the GroundHog stakes before, I have never had the chance to use them.Simply put, they are phenomenal. I think that I am actually going to steal these and use them with my tarp from here on out, whether I am at the beach or in the mountains. These stakes are well built, and hold up well in the sand and high winds, which to me means that in regular soil they will do just as well, if not better. While these may not be titanium, and "ultra-light" enough for some, they are lighter than your standard aluminum tent stakes and have found a place in my kit.

MSR only builds quality products, and these stakes are no different. I'm able to use them as "normal" tent stakes, of course, but their real usefulness is the ability to stake anywhere, have a pre-attached lashpoint on the stake, and secure just about anything I need quickly, without tying extra knots or utilizing 550 cord in short lengths that would be useless in other applications. I bought 2 packs, simply to make sure I had enough, and I've not been disappointed. From snare lines, to tents in windy conditions, to laundry lines to early warning "alarm" systems, these stakes are easy to deploy, durable and extremely useful. When you buy them, buy 2-3 packs - you'll be glad to have too many, than not enough. They're light and small enough to pack easily, so don't worry about weight or space.

I just used these stakes on our recent camping trip. To be fair the ground was very hard dirt where we were. I had to actually pour water on the ground to soften it up to be able to get the stakes in the ground. These stakes definitely grab the ground and won't let go. If you were in high wind area or perhaps softer ground I think these would serve you very well. For my situation they grabbed the ground too well as I could not get them back out of the ground. I ended up just pounding the stakes deeper into the ground because I couldn't get them out.I can't fault the product for that, the stakes do what they say they will do.I share this for those to be aware of the environment you will be using them in.

I was a little worried spending this much money on some tent pegs though upon first use my concerns were instantly dismissed. The pegs are made from aluminum and are very light weight, their design provides great strength and provide me great confidence that they are not just going to work their way out of the ground like a cheaper peg. I have used these pegs several times now, one time in windy weather were my camping buddies had their pegs pull out of the ground, I did not have any such problem. I have also purchased more to use with my hammock rain fly too. The rope loop on the end provides a great tool for the removal of the stake when removing them from the ground. Great product.

These things have been with me from deserts to beaches to mountains and they finally met their match. 3 of them broke on a recent trip to the bitter cold. I'm not sure who's fault it is. We put them about an inch or so into the ground and when taking them up a day later 2 bent and one cracked in half. One of the ones that bent I even tried pouring hot water to help get it out. The one that broke broke from very lightly being kicked to loosen up. These were temperatures of 5 degrees F with with at about 15mph and solid snow. I know its a risk with aluminum, and my fault for not using snow anchors, but still I thought these things were indestructible!

Went camping last week and used these tent pegs. They slid into the ground easily. Then the wind picked up, it was quite gusty up in the mountains where I had camped, and it kept moving round. At one point it was blowing really hard against the side of the tent. Luckily things quietened down overnight. But the MSR groundhogs hadn't budged a millimetre. In the morning a sharp tug on each of the attached cord loops brought them straight out of the ground. The peat needed cleaning out of the three angles, but that was a very small price to pay for a design which certainly paid for itself many times over that night. Excellent.

These are awesome!! For the weight, I have not seen anything better. I can see where you could break the top off if you drive them carelessly, but I used them every night for a week, driving them with a rock. No issues. The little rope loop makes them very easy to pull. You can drive them parallel to the ground and they will bite in almost no soil on top of a rock. I will load a photo of this if I can. The barbs do a good job of keeping the tent loops where they are supposed to be. Since they are omni-directional, if they rotate as they drive, they are never backwards. I will be putting a set of these in every tent I own.

THESE WORK GREATI bought two sets of these (16 stakes) to try out on my family tent. It is a Coleman Hampton, has a very high wind profile and is rated to sleep nine people. I was able to use them on a Scout camp out this past weekend and they held up fantastic to forty mph winds. For the better part of a Saturday the minimum wind was twenty mph and fairly constant between 20-40 mph. These stakes did not budge. In fact, they have such great "staying power" I almost was not able to pull them out of the ground. All sixteen stakes weigh about as much as two traditional metal tent stakes.I WOULD BUY THESE AGAIN.
