I haven't actually finished this just yet, but I can promise that so far I'm absolutely loving it.I've played a lot of the previous Monster Hunter games, having sunk in a few 100 hours into 4 Ultimate and I'm getting there with Generations. When I first heard about Monster Hunter Stories, I simply had to try it. I played the demo when it was first available. The demo is basically the beginning of the story, and on starting the main game it actually acknowledges if you've played the demo or not (giving you the option to continue where you left off in the demo or start anew). I picked the option to continue where I left off since the story was still fresh in my mind. The concept of MH Stories is absolutely brilliant. It turns the original story concept of Monster Hunter into a bit more of a JRPG game while still including hints and story links to the other main games (often referring to the 'Hunters' elsewhere in this world). In this game, you play as a character from a village where they ride monsters instead of hunting them. Think the 'How to Train Your Dragon' of Monster Hunter. It's effectively got turn-based combat, and the monsters you ride come from eggs that you find across the seemingly open world. There's so much to explore, and so far the story has been easy to follow. For me, I'm loving the experience of sharing in the world of the other Monster Hunter games but with a very different flavour. Now I'm actually getting excited about the option of riding a Yan Kut-ku or a Gypceros, which in the other games I hated any experience with (they were so annoying to fight...), and I don't really ever want to put the game down. It's a wonderful experience and worth the try!

A complete departure from the rest of the Monster Hunter series, this seems designed to have the same sort of appeal as Pokemon. It has the usual story of a great evil threatening to destroy the world and your character being the only one who can stop it, and you do so by collecting and training a plethora of bizzare monsters who fight using three different attack styles which beat each other in a "paper scisssors stone" manner, so learning your opponent's attack styles helps secure easier victories. Three different tug-of-war style minigames occasionally break up the normally turn-based combat. The graphics are anime-styled and ideally suited to the 3DS's resolution, although the game seems to be pushing the limit of what the console can cope with at times (most notably, as you approach other characters in the game, a grey stand-in figure pops into view before being replaced with the actual person as you approach). There's a great deal of room for personalisation in the game, with the ability to transfer certain skills and properties from one monster to another - something that hasn't really been absolutely necessary yet for the story up to the point I'm at right now, but likely will become important when trying to build monsters capable of taking on player-vs-player tournaments. One minor frustration with the game is that there is a heavy element of randomness in the monsters - To give a monster a specific ability, you need to find another monster with that ability in its repertoire to donate, and in the right position in its ability grid to donate it to the same empty position in the recipient. Getting everything in the right place can take a lot of time.

Stories is a new take on Monster Hunter's traditional gameplay, while being somewhat of a Pokemon clone. You run around different locales with your Monstie (a monster hatched from an egg) battling wild monsters in turn based combat and raiding their nests for new eggs to hatch. On top of that, the wild monsters you slay will drop various materials which can be used to craft new gear and upgrade your existing gear. Said creatures can range from herbivorous dinosaurs, flying wyverns, carnivorous raptors and even mythical dragons. The combat system can be barebones compared to rock paper scissor, but it goes much deeper than that if you choose to. The game even has a pretty good story. On the downside, the game has a lot of unpolished elements such as occasional FPS drops and slow movement speed inside towns and cities, and these can sometimes feel a little irritating, but it in no way makes the game unplayable.Definitely a good buy for every age group, just a shame about the lack of quality of life.Read full review...

This is basically Pokemon, but way, way better. This game feels totally faithful to the monster hunter series, but so drastically different. The story is pretty great for how far in I am, and has a lot of fun beats (even though I get a little tired of the friendship speeches). Gameplay is perfect given it's origins. It's all about nudging monster behaviour and going off of a rock/paper/scissors attack system. Like pokemon types, except all attacks are fire/water/grass. Not to mention the plethora of monsties to collect and hatch. Since they all have randomized ability slots, you almost always hatch something half decent, but if you want something truly AMAZING, you need to search more.Which is great, because it gives you a reason to explore and look for monster dens! All in all, this is probably my favourite game of 2016.

I love this game! It has everything. Monster fights, egg hunts, item gathering, potion making and a good storyline. I'm a Zelda fan and struggle to find any other games that keep me interested. This is obviously not the same but I loved exploring the open world and engaging in the story. I really enjoy playing it. The graphics are great, the game looks very good on my 3dsl and there is a lot of attention to detail which I appreciate. If you enjoy rpgs then I think this is for you. I'm nearing the end of the game now and don't want it to end! I hope there's a sequel

I'm not a huge turn-based fan, but I like the simplistic, easy to learn strategy style of Monster Hunter Stories. It's easy without being boring, and challenging enough to struggle a little along the road. It's colourful, charming and has a bunch of side quests. Somewhat similar to Ni no Kuni and Pokemon. You can customise your character and download some extra Zelda, Himotou! Umaru-chan etc side quests/arena battle challenges to get some additional content. I enjoy it a lot and am eagerly waiting for future updates.

As far as Monster Hunter games go, this one takes an incredibly different approach to the series but in the best way possible. If you are thinking of getting into the series and want to get familiar with the monsters, this is a great game to start with. It’s also easy to understand, following a similar formula to popular like-minded games such as Pokémon. If you transfer from this game to the main series however, be prepared for a different-and much more difficult-game entirely!

In a nutshell, one of the most renowned steep learning curve franchises get a cutsie pokemon-esque version.Weirdly it's not as bad as it seems, the casual game play is a very different take on things to the point where someone unknown to the game series can pick this up and play just as easily as any 3k hour MHFU vet.The story is pretty engaging, and after 50 hours I'm still happy to grind levels before progressing

Very fun game been playing for about 2-3 hours now and through it all I find the story to be engaging, the side quests don’t feel like a chore even the gathering ones, the concept of fighting with monsters instead of just hunting them like the previous games is a welcome change. All in all I am greatly enjoying this game and definitely recommend it!!!

I think pretty much everyone who has played the Monster Hunter series has wanted to operate on a slightly more friendly basis with the monsters for once. This is that opportunity. Generally regarded by the Monster Hunter subreddit as "the best Pokémon game ever". Fun times all round... but Monster Hunter knowledge is recommended all the same.

We initially downloaded the demo through the ds system and after playing that for a few months my 8 year old asked for the full game, he enjoys playing it and likes the quests to find eggs and raise them and the graphics are great and game play is easy for him to understand. Would recommend to people who enjoy adventure games.

I love this game i think its better than pokemon although i would recommend having a new 3ds and not the old one otherwise you will get character pop in and texture pop in somtimes but nothing game breaking just performance. The game looks great and is a fun game with about 110 monsters in total.

This game doesn't require the player to know anything about previous Monster hunter titles, It's a spin off well worth the time investment with an excellent visual style and presentation. It's a game that fits nicely into the 3DS library and will hold your attention for many hours.

The most fun I've had with an RPG in a long time. The postgame is extremely lacking but I still got 60+ hours of enjoying it and playing through the story regardless so it was definitely worth the purchase in my book! I really hope they make a sequel.
