Monster Hunter is an action RPG where you fight boss monsters. Each monster is unique, has its own strengths and weaknesses, and your mission is to defeat the monster and collect the spoils. You select your weapon (ranging from swords to guns) armor (each with unique stats and abilities such as extra health) items (such as potions and traps) whiles selecting and equipping your Palicos (cat minions) to help you on your quest to hunt a monster of your choosing. When you defeat a monster, you harvest them and use the harvested materials to create better weapons and armors, making hunting easier as a result. The further you play through the game, the harder the game gets and the better spoils you will receive resulting in better equipment. You can play 1 to 4 players either locally or online. The joy from this game stems from your feel of accomplishment when taking down a tyrant of a monster using pure tactics, skills and experience. Even when you get better weapons and armor the monsters are still tough to beat if you have little to no awareness, and the game punishes you if you act carelessly. This is not a game where you get better by getting virtual experience, you get better through literal experience by understanding the monster, learning the attack patterns, and finding openings, without making too many mistakes, being at the right place at the right time, and using the right tools for the job. You are then rewarded with materials that takes you one step closer in making the most bad *** monster hunter. When playing this game, you literally feel like a monster hunter. The only danger is that some players may find this game extremely repetitive, as many battles can last between 10-45 minutes and that's even if you succeed in the hunt. It becomes especially repetitive if you're hunting the same monster over and over again to acquire a key material for that wishful weapon and armor set. You may also bump into that monster which you can't stand, who has a move that's impossible to avoid or does way too much damage, or just being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Some missions also involves boring and annoying gathering quest, which may involve delivering giant eggs slowly from point A to point B without being hit, otherwise you start from square one. So prepare to be frustrated every once in a while.MHGen is basically MH4U+.There are monsters and stages returning from previous titles, as well as new monsters and stages being introduced, including the Astalos, the Gammoth, the Mizutsune and the Glavenus.New game mechanics have been introduced where you can now select hunting Styles and Arts, adding more flare to the game. Styles include Guild (basic MH style) Striker (fills Art gauges faster) Aerial (roll into monsters to jump for aerial attacks) and Adept (does a super dodge if being hit by a monster during a dodge, which can be followed up with a running counter attack). Arts are basically super moves that can turn the tides of the fight, such as embodying your sword with lighting to do a lightning strike for heavy damage, or setting up a healing fountain for support. Between 1-3 Arts can be selected at a time, each charged at a different rate, which can be charged either by attacking or being attacked. The game also introduces a new way to play by allowing you to play as a Palico in addition to bringing two Palicos with you on your quest, even during multiplayer missions, but they're mostly for supporting purposes as they do little damage, so four players playing as Palicos on a normal hunting mission isn't really a good idea.Whiles there's nothing more that's new other than the mechanic and monsters, many aspects of the monster hunter game have been improved:- Players can now harvest by holding the A button as opposed to tapping it- Palicos can be hired 5 at a time through a seller outside of missions as opposed to 1 at a time during missions- Palico preferences can be set to find your preferred types of Palicos to be sold including preferred fur color- Palicos are now more customisable than before by being able to select skills and character traits- Scraps for Palico armor can be obtained through a mini game that can be played once every mission as opposed to once every 3 missions- Scraps can also be obtain by trading in matching materials- Scraps can also be obtained whiles making armor for the player- Talisman melding can be conducted using straight forward points as opposed to using crystals randomly obtained from missions- Armor spheres can be bought outside of missions in addition to being collected during missions when you pass certain points in the game- Certain animations have been added and tweak to give more of a visual indicator on things such as fireballs being bigger and more noticeable- You can now view the weapons and armors at the smiths using the lower screen on the 3DSIn addition, new DLC will be introduced to the players at a monthly rate to add new weapons, armor, and monsters to the game at no extra cost.As a whole, this is the best Monster Hunter game to date by improving on many aspects from the previous games.

Though this game is indeed a great addition to the monster hunter franchise, there are several issues that make me wonder which is better of the two i have played (MH4U / MH Generations). My review may not be as helpful to potentially new customers, and is rather focused at a comparison of my views between Generations and 4 Ultimate.Generations good points is that it does have alot of monsters to offer (and hunt for that matter) with many different styles to play and hunt. The notable new monsters that i don't believe are on previous games number around 6 - 10 area, as well as returning monsters (as im told) from games prior to MH4U, there are few monsters that are not interesting to fight...even if it is done dozens of times over and over, also the large variety of levels does help keep interest. There are also a sizable amount of new skills for armor and decorations to offer allowing you to feel more unique, though it does have it's drawbacks too, which i will get into later. And with the new Hunters Arts implementation it adds new levels of uniqueness to playstyle, as there are around 3 arts for each weapon and about 10 - 15 for all weapons which allow you to offer more offensive, defensive or supportive capabilities. Also if you are a Insect Glaive user like myself, it does feel that more time was put into the insect glaive upgrade tree / kinsect upgrading was made easier to understand. Though my brother is less impressed that some other weapons like Switch-axe seem to have been abandoned...However it's main issues to me at least, are that alot of the armor sets that you can craft from killing monsters all seem to offer statistics or resistances that are really not worth the effort you go through hunting them and usually leaves players using the general same sets over and over, this is painfully apparent prior to unlocking High Rank multiplayer quests, as during my time as a low ranked player the majority of players were all using the Nargakuga set or the Tetsucabra set... For how many monster sets (and event sets) there are, i would think there would be more variety but alot offer the same statistics or no slots to get you're preffered effects active. Also the lack of quests seem to be a concern in the longevity of this game... There are no High Rank village request storylines... rather a handful of some implemented as you advance through the Multiplayer mode. There is no single player story about it that MH4U had either. Also the unique battles against monsters like Gore-Magala on the dragon ship / Dah'ren Marhen / Dalmalduur / Gogmazigus all seem to have vanished for a large battle arena with nothing about it against Nakarkos (a very easy and very lackluster "final boss" type monster. The new palico prowler mode is pretty much of the players opinions, im not a fan and feel they sacrificed alot of quest slots to a mode which i feel is pointless... but thats just me.The game has alot of good points that should keep alot of players interested for some time (and with monthly releases of new quests, does have a longevity factor about it). But i personally think that more could have been done... That being said it was still a worthwhile purchase and still offers lots of fun hunts both offline and online.

A small warning if you are new to the series or monster hunter world was your first game in the series. The beginning of the game is slow, boring and not user friendly at all, however there is the " - " button on the switch which offers help. You may need it, and a lot of things aren't explained, such as crafting gear, item management and storage, combining items, and Palicos. Press the help button and explanations can be found.Monster Hunter games are all about the struggle and grind. The grind to fight new monsters, craft better gear and armour. If you are a casual player with not a lot of free time, you probably won't like this game. The game is about learning a monsters weaknesses, and overcoming defeat. This game is like an all-star list as it has almost every monster in the series (excluding the new monsters in World). There is a lot of content packed into this game.In this game you play as a hunter for an academy researching monsters. There are 14 different weapon types to choose from. Each weapon type has its own unique feel. As you play, you learn things about the monsters you're fighting, such as it's attacks and movement patterns. No matter how good you are, you will hit a wall and constantly fail. That's what monster hunter is about, overcoming setbacks and failures by learning from your defeats. If you've played World and are thinking of testing your skills in the old world, a few pieces of information for you (skip if you are new to the series):The game is a lot slower paced in the beginning.Crafting is different. The way armour skills work is different.Weapons display different numbers than one is used to.The feel is different, meaning the game plays differently.A lot of background mechanics like gathering assignments from the resource center don't exist. Instead there are gathering quests (like the egg ones in world). And, character customisation isn't as good as world. Now for the positivesYou can have loads of Palicos (cats). You can play as your cat and is actually pretty good. The roster of monsters is huge. The most in any monster hunter game to date.Lots of questsArmour and weapons look way better than worldHunter styles and arts (Seeing is better than reading so I'd advise you to look at a YouTube video).4 unique villagesMore maps than world. I haven't got that far in the game yet, but I can tell you that there already are 9 maps.A lot of armour and weapons to collect.Every weapon can be levelled up to contend with the endgame monsters. And finally, there is a G rank. This is Master rank in world (when icebourne comes out). G rank is the next rank up from high rank, and the real endgame. There is a new mode called prowler mode which lets you play as any of you 100+ cats. It is quite viable, even at endgame provided you know what you're doingThe game is hard and if you like to challenge yourself, buy now.

Purchased from somewhere else as I had store credit with them to spend but thought I'd write a review on here with Christmas coming.Monster hunter is a brilliant game very challenging and rewarding difficulty wise I'd say it's around dark souls level maybe even harder. So if you don't like a challenge then maybe this isn't for you it's also very grindy as you have to kill monsters in order to make armour and weapons so you may have to kill the same monster several times in order to get the gear you're after. But it is worth it!!You can either play solo or play online with others if you're up to it! (Requires Nintendo online subscription)Monster hunter offers hundreds of ours of play time with some very beautiful and unique looking armour and monsters. This version is much better and far more difficult than monster hunter world so if you've played that and want a much better and more difficult monster hunter then this is your game you won't be disappointed!Pros:Stunning looking armour and weaponsLots of hours worth of play time!Lots of monsters even ones from previous games!!!Looks lovely ( not as good as world tho)Can play it on the go!! Woohoo!!!Large variety of weapons and play styles to choose fromCan transfer data over from the 3DS if you have it on that consoleNormally I like to list all the negatives as well as positives but honestly I'm kind of struggling of any bad things

*Bought on eShop*Monster Hunter Generations is another must-have for fans of the series, blending perfectly he old with the new for a great overall package. Hunter Styles add that little extra intensity and tempo to the combat while the game tries to welcome new players with the optional tutorials. It also does a few things better than its predecessor, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, but also a couple of things a little less impressively. The nod to nostalgia brings a lot of locations and quests to keep players busy, but makes the game lose a little of the narrative and focus of its predecessor.Generations, overall, is the match of its predecessors that also boasts some innovations and improvements. This franchise is still far from perfection, but it's still one of the most enjoyable and immersive texperiences to be found on Nintendo hardware. For any gamer ready for a long-term challenge, with tough battles and plenty of complexity to master, this is most certainly worth hunting down. The graphics are a bit jaggy at times and the load times can be annoyng at times but these things cannot hide the memorable soundtrack, the hunting styles across 14 weapons and the awesome new monsters.

Only played World before Generations Ultimate. There is so much more to do in this game, which if you enjoy World, then you will most likely enjoy this game as well. More Monsters, More quests, More variation for weapons and they look more unique. On the other hand, there are a lot of World's conveniences that are not present, such as joining mid-quest, changing equipment at the item box and on quest - something that means you need a "Do all" build for multi hunts if you don't use a weapon that simply goes for raw damage.Bows are also, well, VERY different. As are the other ranged weapons, so if you are a ranged main you are going to have to get used to the weapons all over again. The only other thing that really bothers me is the fact that Hub Quests aren't solo-able the same way World is,you can do these quests, but you are doing them with multiplayer health alone or not to my understanding, and it definitely feels like it. Which is a shame, because while I enjoy hunting with others, I sometimes just want to chill on my own against some deviants, which gets much more time consuming due to the health scaling.TL:DR If you like Monster Hunter, you'll like this, probably.

Probably one of the greatest game series ever made. Basically if you like Dark Souls or Bloodbornes combat, specifically the Boss Battles, you may actually love this game more. The franchise of Monster Hunter has been around even longer than the Souls series of games. And it shows in this, which is now not quite the latest iteration (Monster Hunter XX on Switch and very Shortly Monster Hunter World). After 13 years the game has been constantly refined and added to, the animations are wonderful, the graphical fidelity for a handheld is amazingly detailed and the sounds and music are awesome. However, note, if you have no patience, you will be bored by the starting quests. These quests are required if you are new to the series. vets will fly through them but if your new, take it slow and don't rush, you learn a lot at the beginning that's very useful later on.So if you fancy a challenging game where skill, timing, precision and patience are greatly rewarded or a boss rush version of a souls game, Monster Hunter is probably for you.

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, fantastic Action/RPG. Has a single player village quest line and also the ability to play multiplayer via the guild area with literally tons of quests and monsters within this Ultimate edition. Graphics are stunning and nice and bright and alive, Capcom have done a superb job with visuals here. They have remastered a 3DS game with HD graphics and it's a joy to behold and enjoy. Fantastic mix of quests from easing you into the game collecting herbs and mushrooms to slaying monsters of all shapes and sizes. Multiplayer is where the fun is at, but rest assured the single player campaign in the village is very extent also. So many things to do from hunting, exploring, fishing, mining, crafting this game has it all.5/5 from me and possibly the best in the series so far.

Bought this after spending the past year on monster hunter world. I originally though I could never go back to the old style game play. No loading screens and so many quality of life changes came with world. However that being said once I got a switch I had to try this out. With the addition of the new valour style and expanded G. rank this game keeps on giving. I have now come to the conclusion that I prefer the old style just a bit more, it's mainly due to the pure variety of monsters weapons and different ways to play this game offers. So if you have reached end game on world pick this up you will not be disappointed!

I'm new to this game as I only played Monster Hunter World but this has so much more content for the player. Whether you transferred data from a previous save file or started anew, this game lets you hone in lots of hours of gameplay. Sure its hard for new players transferring from MHW but its worth it cause it gives you free DLC item packs that helps a lot in the beginning. I would be struggling severely if it wasn't for the free DLC packs. I just have to say that I will probably beat my 350+ hours of gameplay in MHW with this Awesome game.

The story mode isn't so much of a story as you simply hunt monsters from the different MH generations. (Hence the title). However the introduction of the new styles and arts has made it so that all weapons are more viable. There's not been an easier game to switch from long sword to light bow gun.The all new Prowler mode is a welcome new game play mechanic, making the tedious gathering quests a great deal more manageable, especially since you won't need pickaxes, nets, cool drink, hot drink or any stamina increasing items.

Absolutely love it. I've been a hunter since the first game so I was in nostalgia heaven when I traveled to the town of Kokoto in the game.Although Monster Hunter world has a ton of improvements on the game this is definitely a great game for those who played the older ones. It has a lot of the more modern features but with the older monsters like Yian Garuga ect. So overall World is better but this is still a great monster hunter game and the best way to enjoy the memories. Not to mention the portability with the DS

11.9.2018

Third monster hunter game I've played being an avid fan of monster hunter freedom and freedom unite. Honestly, I am more that delighted to play again after a 7 year hiatus from the Monster Hunter franchise. Very nostalgic and brings memories of a younger me being jump scared of that Tigrex, but there is a lot of exploring to do. For example, lots of monster to hunt, lots of items to gather, and new hunting styles and hunter arts. Very good game!

12.9.2018

The premise of this game is the same as the Nintendo 3DS/2DS. Within slightly upgraded graphics, it plays the same as its predecessor. For those who enjoy MH, they will enjoy the difficulties of this game and the countless hours of farming to get the desired weapons and armours. Those who have never played it before, will marvel in the vast open plains of the multiple maps and enjoy the machanics of the game.

31.8.2018

Unbelievably happy that this has been ported over to a console that doesn't destroy your hands after a couple hours of play! Takes a little getting back into the swing of things after getting used to MH World because there are a lot of quality of life improvements in World I miss dearly, but there is nothing quite like the old Monster Hunter. It's good to be back.
