I have been waiting for the new update of the Mac version of Office. I have tried other alternatives, and they just don't work the way I would expect them to. Having used Microsoft Office for the PC in the past for all of my office needs, I could not find anything that worked quite the same on my Mac. Printing would be off, or text would not look right, and just a lot of small things that made me feel that I needed to keep looking for the right program to edit spreadsheets and documents on my Mac.Behold: Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac! This is the newest version of Office for the mac! The settings and options I am used to having are all there! Commands have the same name I am familiar with!Documents and text look the way I would expect them to when I create/edit them and even when I print them! I felt at home! The menu system does take a bit of getting used to. Instead of being a traditional Menu Bar like Office 2003 (what I am familiar with) it has a style more like Office 2007 - but with the menus detached from the main document window. This takes a little getting used to, but actually is much better with my wide screen monitor. I still prefer the old Office 2003 style menus, but I would say these are a bit more useful then the ones present in Office 2007. Also, the update system can be annoying if you set it to always check for updates. I get a pop-up window every time, but would have preferred if it checked in the background and then just let me know when new updates were available.Installation took a bit. Not too terribly slow, but it was a bit time consuming. All of this was well worth it though, as any Office program I run starts up very fast! I was impressed with the loading speeds. I expected fairly fast loading due to the major efforts put into the new Microsoft products to decrease loading times, but I still expected it to take a bit longer. Word or Excel load about as fast as Firefox or any other lean program! MUCH faster than an alternative I had been using previously. After using alternatives, and having become accustomed to the PC version - I found Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac to be a wonderful and necessary software suite for all of my document needs. I would definitely recommend this program if you want a solid and fully featured Office program for your Mac!

While many power users used to the more technical features of Office may find Office 2008 for Mac lacking, it works great for what I want it to do!Word is effectively the standard format for documents in the American business world, and most of my employers use Exchange as their email server. Therefore, what I most want from my office suite is something that 1. works well reading and writing Word documents and 2. provides a way to connect to my employer's Exchange server and properly handle its calendars, meeting requests, etc.Office 2008 for Mac just does that! I pulled up and edited my old PC Office-created Word resume with no problem, and haven't experienced major issues reading any other Word document yet.The Exchange capabilities of Entourage work like a charm, let you accept and send meeting requests and generally enable you do all of the things you're used to doing with Outlook, but can't currently do with Mac Mail. The simple Excel spreadsheets I used for timesheets pulled up in Mac Excel without a hitch and Messenger and Powerpoint are nice-to-haves.For better or worse (I say better), the interface for Office 2008 for Mac isn't the ribbon interface you may be used to with Office 2007 for PC, but after getting used to the Mac's Office interface, I actually found it easier to use!I miss having applications like OneNote (though Word has a similar "Notebook" mode), InfoPath and Visio, the forthcoming version of Mac Mail diminishes Entourage's value by providing Exchange support and power-users of Office may miss features like the ability to hack together VBA macros (the Mac Workflows are a bit more limited), but for most business users, Office 2008 for Mac will suit their needs perfectly and provide the necessary hook into the Microsoft Office suite that currently dominates the business landscape.Overall, I'd recommend the package and think it's an essential purchase for most business users especially since SP2 added Live Workspace and SharePoint integration. However, with Mac Mail gaining Exchange support and because there are several programs for PC Office that don't come with Office 2008 for Mac, the Mac suite loses a star in my eyes.

I installed MS Office for Mac 2008 hesitatingly, as I had MS Office for Mac 2004 on my new-ish black MacBook. I know that sometimes installing a new version of something can mess up what was already working fine, so I was nervous. I had been using the '04 version for years, and used other versions before that. I just get used to whatever changes are made, and get on with it. I am not a serious user, I just am used to using the formats w/ the MS interface, so I continue to use it.The only hitch I got with the new installation was that my wireless network stopped recognizing my HP printer, which is connected to the wireless network via my AirPort Extreme. After I installed the new programs,I didn't have to print anything for a few days and then I discovered the problem on the 4th of July. Fun! Not. I did call Mac assistance (something I paid extra for earlier this year) and they helped me re-connect right away.I would tell all of you non-serious users to check out the home and student version of this, as it is probably a lighter-weight version of the programs you want to use, at a fraction of the cost. I have no use for the MS Exchange server support, and all of those applications that tie one user to another co-worker, I assume.I do use the Entourage, and feel that it is much better than the '04 version. With this one, I can add email senders to my address book and see the downloads without having to click on the text telling me to click there if I want to see it. It got to be a drag with all of the HTML emails I get as a consumer. I don't use this feature, but others may think it is neat. It's called "my day" and is sort of like a floating Outlook-like reminder of what's on your schedule. I use my Mac iCal, so I just keep it simple by not using the "my day" too.The other programs, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are nicely updated as well. Graphically, it is very nice to look at and to use.I would warn you though, it took about 45 minutes to load the new Office product. So don't attempt it if you don't have a lot of time.

I've owned a lot of Macs over the years (starting before that with an Apple Lisa of all things) but these days I'm primarily a Windows user and have not looked at Office for the Mac since it's first few versions years ago. So when Apple offered to let me play with a review copy of Office for Mac I thought it would be fun to see how it compares to Office on Windows. The Mac version provides good compatibility and pretty much the same functionality as the Windows version, and manages to do it in a Mac-style that won't have you always feeling like you're running a Windows app.As a few seconds reading these reviews will tell you, Microsoft was unable to provide Visual Basic for Applications support in this version,so if you're on an older version and have dependencies on this then you probably don't want to upgrade, but for the rest of us who don't write applications in Office, it's probably not an issue. So what really is there to say about Office for the Mac?Well, it's Office. For the Mac.For a lot of people this probably tells you all you need to know if you're moving over to the Mac for the first time or working in an environment where Office is the de-facto standard for document interchange. If you're used to office on Windows, this will give you the closest experience in terms of functionality you're familiar with, and it does it in a very "Mac" way.If you know you need it, or you know you hate it (or both) then you're probably not reading this review. For everyone else, Office for Mac is a complete office application suite that works well in the Mac environment. Chances are it will offer 10x the features that you'll ever use, just like its Windows counterpart.G.

Having been a long suffering user of MS Office on the Mac for a good few years now I was keen see whether this new version would be any less frustrating to use. I'm pleased to say it is. In fact, for me at least, it's a huge improvement. To be honest I approached Office:Mac 2008 with some trepidation and a degree of hostility. My experience of Microsoft products, particularly those on the Mac has not been good and I half expected it to crash during installation and take my iMac with it. Fortunately the install proved to be event free, as was the automated update process - a 280mb download! As for the software itself, everything has been given a polish in both aesthetic and usability terms. The interface looks more unified and things you need are placed more logically. Word and Excel don't seem hugely different to me, but I only really use them in quite a basic way so I've probably not spotted most of the changes. Other folks have complained the Excel is missing features, but it doesn't seem to have affected any of my files. PowerPoint on the other hand has come on in leaps and bounds - finally templates that I may consider using, an align/distribute tool where you'd expect it, auto guides and palettes that remain opaque - small things can make a big difference. The ability to use .wmv movie files is a big plus too.Overall I found Office:Mac 2008 to be stable (no crashes so far) and a lot quicker on my intel iMac than Office 2004. It's not perfect and some of the improvements should have been in there all along, but at least now I don't shudder at the thought of using it. Much improved.

I'm a long-time Mac user (first Mac, a 512+). Eventually, like many Mac users, I drifted over to MS Word (MacWrite, WordPerfect, then Word). It works so well, it becomes the standard by which you compare other programs. My need for this particular upgrade was that pesky docx! Those PC users smugly told me that I should upgrade. Initially, that meant getting the MS patch for Mac Office 2004 (right date?) users. I was accused of being a "Luddite" for asking for documents to be sent in an earlier version compatible with both the newest Word for PC and the older Word for Macs! [Note: if you didn't have the latest OS for Mac, the patch wouldn't work.]Thank goodness for MS Office 2008 for Mac.My primary MS Office uses are word processing (95%),PowerPoint (4%), and Excel (1%). Thus, my real concern was whether this 2008 edition made my life easy or harder.Easier, hands down. I can open those docx documents. I can open all my older documents (dating WAY back). I can open up newer ppt files.I think, if you were a more sophisticated user, using all the bells and whistles, you'd appreciate the subtle upgrades more than me. I'm a blue-collar user, using it 1000+ times a year, but really relying on spell check, word count, track changes, font size and style, and a few more options. I used to use PageMaker a lot, then started doing simple newsletters with Word; now I don't even do those. Email, social network sites, and shared document sites have replaced that need.Bottom line? I like it. And I really like the continuation of that auto update check. Keep it up, MS!

I have a Mac because I got tired of restarting my PC all the time. 21 years later, I'm hacked because I've had to upgrade my word processing to Word so I can get my stories and novels and magazine pieces to PC users without their Word program saying they can't open the attachment because it' not in a recognizable format.GRRRRR. So I got this. It arrived in my mailbox almost as soon as I clicked "Order." No, I mean, FAST! It was actually 1.5 days, but for internet purchases, I think that's astounding - for regular delivery, not the overnight. Let it sit for three days because I was really leery of installing it. Finally bit the bullet and Just Did It. Ursh. And yeah, it's Micro$oft.Takes over a minute to load, then it wants to save everything in its new format. I want it compatible with what I already have, so I gotta opt differently each time. And...just the usual LITTLE things. I'm seeming to be taking forever to get used to this. Don't know if it's just because it's a new program or if I'm subconsciously hacked that it's MS Word - for Mac, yeah, but still...If you want to be up-to-date with your formatting, have transparency with other people in the world, get this. It really does do the job without causing your email correspondents to freak out with obscene messages.

This is much better than other Microsoft Office for Mac software I've had in the past, but still has its own issues. The Pros:-Everything is very pretty and smooth, lookwise. Icons fit in with current Mac icons.-Documents transferred from older versions came into these programs well. None of my documents I opened in this (that were previously viewed on my older programs) came in garbled.-All programs are still very easy to use, even without a manuel.-Many different saving options are available, so if you find yourself needing to send a document to a Windows user or a person with a less updated program, you can!The Cons:-The programs are slow to load. It takes a good half a minute sometimes to open to file I want, however large or small.-Occasionally, it will shut down for no reason. Thankfully, it does that less often than my older version did. Just a note, save your work frequently because the Mac versions of Microsoft do tend to quit unexpectedly every now and then.I'm enjoying this version much better than my last (which I have reviewed, as well). Even with its issues, I haven't seen anything better that is compatible with a Mac and PC users. If you're looking for a basic programs for your new Mac, this is a good one.

First off I am delighted to be able to use my beloved MacPro with the company exchange servers with this product. At first glance and use everything seems familiar -all does as you would expect. Email works very well and I am sure over a period of time the global address book will become very useful to one and all.As a company we make heavy use of the calender feature - particularly the one everyone has access to. We keep an eye on each other etc. The calender on a windows machine running outlook is very colourful - each Department having their own colour in categories. However for some reason MS have decided not to allow a person running Entourage on a Mac the same useful category distinctions!!All the appointments are there but do not seem to sync the catagories! If I have been stupid and missed a trick then please advise and I will write to Microsoft with a groveling apology!!Overall - well done MS it has enabled me to spend most of my day getting things done more efficiently on my Mac, rather than waiting for Vista to let me know if it is going to let me do something maybe, after checking a couple of times and then following confirmation, taking a little while to process.........etc (You get the idea??)

The "full" version of Microsoft Office for Mac shows that the demons of Redmond can play nicely with the Angels of Cupertino. Owners of Macs may dearly want to love iWork and use it exclusively, but the preponderance of PCs in the world make ownership of Word, Excel and Powerpoint a must for those who don't want any nasty surprises when the file is shared with the PC dwelling world.Office 2004 was good, and quick but left you feeling that Microsoft didn't really want the Mac business, it just didn't seem that the interface had been thought about as much as on the PC - 2008 fixes that, and better, it doesn't fall by the wayside as the latest PC offering does. There is no "ribbon" here, there is no jolting change to the interface taking time away from the work you want to do.This version includes the Word,Excel and Powerpoint products as well as Entourage, the Mac version of Outlook. The student version omits exchange server functionality, recognizing that most (if not all) home users won't have exchange servers. All in all, if you're a Leopard user, this is pretty much a requirement. As much as you want to love iWork, you've got to understand that the world won't go with you, yet...Very well recommended.

The main reason to use Microsoft Office is to take advantage of its ubiquity, and the huge investment - for better or worse - that people have made in learning how to use it.So the two great advantages Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac offers are compatibility and productivity:COMPATIBILITY: Using the defacto standard means that you can usually readily open the files you receive, and that others can usually open the files you send. (And if they can't, they will ironically consider that to be their fault, not yours, and make the effort to open the file. Unless they are paying you!)PRODUCTIVITY: Tens of millions of people have invested a lot of hours into learning how to use Microsoft Office - understanding the features, concepts, and quirks. Choosing Office for Mac takes advantage of that investment. Of course, if it worked identically to the PC version, that might be the ideal way to take advantage of the experience and training people have.If those are your goals, you'll be very happy. If specific features interest you, be sure to check the details before buying.

It has most of the functionality that the standard Windows based office package. I'm on a Power PC IBM 1,8 ghz processor It can be a little slow starting up. The menu options are the same as you would find in the Windows based version. I have had this software for some time now and the product updates have cured some issues but cutting and pasting in word has been a little bit of an issue in that if you use the return key to separate your paragraphs when you past into another document it removes the spaces. I use it to write me reviews here on Amazon and have that issue. I do like the palate tool. Copying pictures from one app to another is problem because it changes the format.Creating documents on the mac and opening them on a pc with Office 2007 has work flawlessly for me.I am by no means a heavy Office user I use it mostly for word processing a little Power point and some basic Excel. All-in-all it suites my needs as a basic user very well.

I've never cared much for Microsoft's software, but for me the Office products have always been excellent, and I really like this current version of Office. At the price, it is probably not the best choice for the basic home user who needs to do a little word processing and a few spreadsheets, but for advanced users there are few better options. My only regret with this package is that Microsoft has never added Access to it. I still prefer Access to Filemaker, and a Mac version would make this suite complete. The new interface Microsoft has added for 2008 is more Mac-like than any of the previous Office offerings. The formatting and other floating palettes are very similar to the palettes in iWork, but so much more powerful. Like any software, the way you are going to use it will dictate if it has the right features for you. This version of Office still has all the functionality I require.

I will be honest, I'm not a big MAC person. Yes, I have one, and yes I use it. But, my primary computer is Windows *gasp* Vista. Anyway, the one thing I missed using my Macbook was the Office program. So, I installed this version on the MAC, and within ten minutes I was able to open the documents I needed. The Interface is a bit different, but then again I'm not a big MAC guy, so maybe that's why. The functionality is there for anyone who needs basic Office stuff. I've read other reviews that it's missing some Power User features, but since I'm not a power user I don't know.Bottom Line: If you have a MAC and need to do the basic Office stuff, then this product will give you what you need.If you are a Power User and want to do Expert type of stuff on Office, you should really compare all the versions and read all the reviews to make sure the product you buy will do what you need it to.

It may be heresy to approve of a Microsoft product to be used on a Mac, but I've always liked Office. It does have a learning curve and more than a few odd quirks, but eventually the program and I make peace.I'm not a power user and probably don't utilize 95% of the features of any of the programs in the Office Suite, but it does what I want to do. The main problem I have with Office 2008 is that it runs very slowly on my G5 IMac; which is the fault of my aging Mac, not necessarily Office. Files are slow to open and I see the twirling pinwheel of boredom all too much. I would recommend Office to anyone with an Intel Mac.G5 Mac owners should probably just live with what they've got and upgrade to Office 2008 when they upgrade their computer.
