Metal Max is a long running series of games that finally made a debut on Playstation. It falls on the smaller but dedicated development team category. Thus it looks like a PS2 game. But it doesn't stay there, pretty much everything feels like a game I bought 15 years ago, forgotten on the shelf and suddenly found out. What I want to say with that is that if you're not tolerant of the very basic (compared to today's AAA or even some western indie studios) 3D graphics and the not very intuitive interface then you'll be missing your money pretty soon. The game is a slow burner, you need to spend at least 10 hours to get into unlocking the starting tank modification features which opens up all the game is about, hoarding items, crafting tank parts and tuning them to your liking. The game doesn't go into much explaining and leaves a lot for the player to figure out. There is also a lot of grinding involved but I have faced anything challenging in my first 20 or so hours in the game. There are some unpolished stuff that you'll either don't mind or hate. For example text going off the screen, either in dialogue boxes that are too small or just being unreadable or typos in descriptions. There are also some frame drops mostly in the main base or in some other areas, haven't experienced anything going wrong in battles or while in the tanks.Since I said it's more of an old school (game has the same designer since it's first entry in Nintendo - that is Famicom - and not a AAA game expect to hit the grind wall relatively soon and see some things (like ruin exploration) pretty much repeat in terms of design. Having said that the game revolves in two modes, you either are in tanks and fight stronger monsters or on foot and explore dungeons(which you can't really avoid because they contain the most important thing you need, technology tomes to eventually unlock tank modification :)). Battles are turn based, you can change speed or if you want both your party and enemies to attack each other altogether or in turns. Also voice acting is limited so during battle or in job or level ups you'll pretty much hear the same variety of lines over and over.I haven't talked much about story yet because it's basic and it's a pretty much a game you can pick up and play without caring about anything else than grinding your tanks to something even meaner (with "interesting" designs). The general overview is that pretty much the world is done for after the central AI that humanity invented decided to wipe humanity out and then you end up being one of the last survivors kicking machine's ass with the greatest weapon man ever made, the Tank. The VERY GOOD thing about the story is that the protagonist want to take revenge and fight and is not the usual reluctant hero that doesn't want to be involved and makes it such a drama that we have to suffer through each line of dialogue. Anyway, story is pretty basic and kept to a minimum which is good as you have tanks to focus on, not much make sense in a rational level anyway.Character artwork is very nice and surely adds to the game. Having also not talked about music it's pretty nice, the main theme is a very nostalgic sounding piano piece and you can find this mix of electronic and rock music throughout. Sadly some of the tracks can become a little overwhelming as you might spend long times in areas gathering loot.Having said all the above I'm sticking to the game which I doubted in the beginning and it has kinda grown into me, but suffice to say it's surely a hate it or love it. There's surely a lot of unpolished material, progression is a little bit uneven(though haven't hit a strong challenge yet but I'm keeping my hopes up for later in the game), there are minimal instructions on how things work or how to even customise basic things in UI(you just have to figure things out), there's no button customisation(except for L1 and R1 that can be changed to fixed commands), level design is repetitive, minimal story, absolutely PS2 vibes... I could go on on all those things but in the end I still look forward to go back and keep playing the game as I think it gives it has hidden charms. By the way, did I mention in sound you get to select between "Mono" and "Stereo", and this was release just some days ago. Gotta love it. If you're unsure but you're familiar with the series I'm sure you didn't need to write all this, if you like turn based jrpgs and don't mind the low quality you might have to wait for a lower price mark, personally I didn't regret paying the full price.

I got the game for 5 euros and wasnt awaiting a lot from it but finally the game isnt so bad. The battle system is like an Rpg and the game have japanese voice with english subtitle only. Strange part is that the trophy are in japanese and the story is original. Some subject are a bit strange ( making babies to save humanity with the first girl we found ) but still make sense with the story. Dont await a lot for this game but it isnt as bad as it looks like.
