Metal Gear Acid (or AC!D, as it likes to be known) is an entirely new, radical take on the Metal Gear series. Instead of the usual direct action-adventure approach taken by all of the games in the series so far, AC!D is a far more tactical game, and although the action is indirect, it doesn't change the feel of how the game plays.AC!D follows usual hero Solid Snake again (although joined by lady friend Teliko) as he attempts to infiltrate a laboratory complex to find a weapon known only as Pythagoras in an attempt to negotiate with terrorists who have hijacked a passenger plane. You control both characters, each with their own abilities. The new gameplay system revolves around cards - it sounds geeky,or just not Metal Gear, but when you try out the system at first, it just feels right. There are 200-odd cards split into five main card types - Weapon, Action, Item, Support and Character:#Weapon cards are used to fire weapons#Action cards are mainly add-ons for weapons which improves their effects#Item cards include the usual MGS items - boxes, rations, etc#Support cards are helping hands - and include special abilites like bullet evading#Character cards are very special cards which give you special abilitiesMany of the cards can either be used for their intended ability or can be used to move Snake around the level. The highly-detailed levels tend to be set out in grids - although this doesn't tend to be noticeable. They are well designed and offer many hiding places. It's almost like chess in a way - even down to taking pieces (IE: killing soldiers). If you are spotted, another piece/soldier comes in to take the last one's place. To make it easier to see where your enemies are, the camera can be rotated with L and R, and the analogue stick can be used to shift the camera, like the corner view camera could be adjusted in MGS2/MGS3.The graphics are visually impressive - the usual Metal Gear standard. All the enviroments are detailed, as are character models and NPCs.The general mechanic of AC!D works like this - you decide what moves you make - you usually get 2 moves per turn, but this can be upgraded) and Snake carries them out. Then, the enemies make their moves. This continues until you succeed in your mission. The usual stablemates of the MG series are still here - you can knock on walls, you can crawl, you can do pretty much anything that you can do in MG in AC!D.The actual card-playing mechanic works well - you choose your card (you have around 30 at first, and the 6 you are given in your hand are entirely random), and use it depending on what it is. If it's a Box or Armour, you equip it. At first, you only have two slots for items to be equipped, but this can be upgraded. If the card you chose is a weapon, you select an enemy to shoot, or a grid square to throw a grenade on. If it's a Movement card, it gets a bit more interesting. After selecting where you want to go (the usual limit is 3 cards at a time, but some Character cards let you go more), you can choose whether to run or crawl, and after the run, which way to face: North, South, East or West. If the way you choose to face is against a wall, you can press against it in classic MG style. You can also knock on the wall in an alternate menu.Pressing X opens up a menu which allows you to end your turn (after you've done all your moves), or special actions such as knocking on a wall, or performing a punch-punch-kick combo (the classic Circle-Circle-Circle combo). It all works very fluidly, and works even when you've been spotted. The Alert-Evasion-Caution system still works as usual, but operates in a slightly different way. The countdown - now 15-0 seconds for Alert - only works when you are not seen, and only when you are making a move. If you get out of sight, there is a handy card that downgrades your Alert status to the next level down - it can be a potential lifesaver. Gunning down your enemies with a classic FA-MAS (from MGS1) feels aggressive and like you're actually doing it because of the solid sound effects- although you've only commanded Snake to pull the trigger, and aren't hammering Square yourself. The epic score is also extremely well done, and changes accordingly depending on what state of Alert you're in - and can set your heart beating rapidly. Unfortunately, due to the lack of cut-scenes (see below), there are no voices, which is a bit of a loss yet does not affect the game very much. What can really surprise you is how the game keeps up the classic Metal Gear tradition of fast-paced thrills, even in the card-based gameplay. The music, sound effects and even the fast method of selecting and using cards keeps the game's pace up, and as a result keeps you excited and playing more, watching health inch down or being right beside an enemy without him knowing. There is a WiFi multiplayer option which puts you and a friend as Snake and Telinko in a tactical battle to the death. AC!D also features a link-up with Metal Gear Solid 3 via USB cable.Although it's all fun, AC!D has its downsides. The card system takes a while to learn, and there are still long cut-scenes. Although they aren't FMV's, but simply scrolling text put over hand-drawn backgrounds. The cut-scenes are skippable, but for those who want the story but not long cutscenes, the text speed can be changed. Sometimes the game can be hard on you too - it's extremely frustrating to spend ages on a mission only to be ambushed by umpteen guards and lose everything, or to keep trying the same part over and over. Thankfully there is an option to save where you are currently at and if anything goes wrong you can just boot the save up later. There is an added bonus for those who are fast to buy AC!D: the first-published forms of the game come packaged with a limited edition card book - essentially a checklist of all the cards - which includes a special message from Hideo Kojima (long time Metal Gear producer/director) and AC!D's director Shinta Nojiri. However, in the end, Metal Gear Acid is a great game that can be a bit uneasy to get to grips with, but as soon as you start you wont want to stop. When you get the hang of the system, you'll be tactically sprinting round in a cardboard box in no time. It's a great game - you just need to give it time first.Graphics - 5/5Gameplay - 4.5/5Sound - 4/5Lifespan - 4/5Overall - 4/5

I first got Metal Gear Acid (MG:A) as something to pass the time during those long commutes to and from work, thinking I'd have it completed in a month or two. Boy was I wrong. MG:A is definitaly different from the rest of the series, but still contains all the essentials from previous games. The plot that takes place over a few hours, a revelation or two, and of course the infamous Metal Gear itself. The gameplay is wildly different from that of the previous games. MG:A is a turn-based role-play much favoured by FFX and FFVII and incorporated into the MG series in a different if frustrating way.MG:A uses a card system, that the player uses to make Snake move, shoot, kick and plant explosives.Tactics, intuition and a good sense of judgement are needed to play this game, and of course luck.Although slow and sometimes infuriating, MG:A's card based system actually works pretty well here. The only problem being getting the right card at the right time. Randomness reigns supreme, and reign it does. These cards, and the decks they come from can be used to move Snake but at a cost to the player and this affects when Snake's next turn will be. Different cards have different costs and all of them can be used for their namesake i.e. grenade, to blow the enemy up. Chaff grenades to confuse cameras etc. Each time you start a level, you also start with the cards that you have chosen yourself, but shuffled so you're never guaranteed the card you actually want/need.The levels, though deceptively simple can be excruiatingly long and you may end up restarting levels more than twice (I lay the blame on the randomness). As always, you are the man of the hour Snake and sneaking in is what you do best, so sneak away. But it's not that easy. The A.I. though predictable, and dumb as always will call for backup and shoot at you if they can. There is still the three stages of alert, and hiding from the enemy when found is a lot more difficult to achieve here in the world of MG:A.Tutorials, are dotted along the course of the game and so leaving you with no real need to read the instruction manual, the buttons are simple and the commands easy to follow. You are able to gain a birdseye-view of the layout of each level which helps enormously with your tactical planning. Commanding Snake (and later Teliko) also is a simple and easy thing to accomplish. There is also the added bonus of a side menu, which allows you to command Snake to knock on walls to divert the enemy's attention, crawl around for a bit, or if you simply want to abort the mission you are on and return to the briefing menu to perfect your deck and/or purchase some extra cards, but again when buying your cards there is that niggling randomness factor which you will find exhasperating to sat the least, will you get good cards or silly little crappy ones? Who knows.Apart from the randomness or your shuffled deck the game is in itself engrossing.Another good point to add to MG:A is an opportunity to return to levels you have completed and take on an extra mission if you don't feel like doing the storyline just yet. These extra missions vary, from getting from point A to point B without being sighted to completing a mission without a kill, very difficult but rewarding.Metal Gear Acid has a very long life and depending on your patience, is a good way of making the old grey matter work. Most missions are as they come, get from A to B without too much hassle, others require more patience and thinking and essentially a lot of planning and editing of your pack. The game revolves mainly on the players ability to use the cards given to them wisely and although this may seem impossible at certain points there is always a way.As with all games in the MG series the plot is focused once again on our man Snake and that Metal Gear rears its ugly head once more in his direction. Nothing has changed in the world of Metal Gear concerning the plot. It is still, focused in just a few hours as Snake unravels a mystery and exposes a truth at every turn. But wait! There are no voice overs, Snake doesn't have a voice! No one does! It's just line after line after painful line of dialogue, so time consuming that you start to wonder if you're playing a game or watching a silent movie. You can easily lose interest after about ten minutes of banter between Snake and the other characters he comes across. However, hope is in sight you can press the start button and skip all that, Great! Now, onward with the adventure! Failing that, there is still the network battles and a lovely surprise if you have MG3.On the whole, MG:A would only appeal to someone who has bags of patience and a lot of time on their hands. Some of the more diehard MG fans may want to give MG:A a miss. But there may be a few of you out there that may want to try something new from the Hideo Kojima stable.Metal Gear Acid is worth a try. It an addictive and enigmatic game, if a little frustrating and at times extremely annoying. I still enjoy it.

Metal gear acid features Solid snake and co. going up against the forces of BEAGLE and an army of mercinaries lead by the giant Leon, Metal gear acid is quite possibly the hardest Metal gear game of all time (Haven't played all) It encompasses at least four metal gear games into it through the card system, this is the hardest part of Acid.Acid is a turn based Metal gear using a card system, theese cards dictate how many actions you have in a turn and how much Damage you do, it features every weapon in Metal gear from the RC rocket from chronicles to Guns like the P90's carried by the tengu in MGS2.But by far the best part of MGA and the PSP is that when you use certain cards like Olga gurlukovich or Vamp, you get a cut scene from MGS2 proving that the PSP is not only far superior to the DS but also competitive to the PS2.

When i first saw the previews for this game a while ago i thought wow until i heard it was a rpg card game, so i forgot about it. I had some spare cash after i imported my psp and read the reviews of how good the game was and got it imported. And all i can say is WOOOOOOOOOW!!!!This game is so good, I prefer it to the other Metal Gears in the series, Konami has executed this game perfectily. Other people who say there not buying it coz its a card game, forget about them, I own the game and can say you have to get this. The graphics are immense, the storyline is so brilliant and the audio is top notch. When This game comes out in the UK, do yourself a favor, BUY IT!

24.3.2006

When i first bought this game i was a bit apprehensive having being told it was rubbish by a friend. I own the first two metal gear games and had high hopes for the psp release.I wasn't dissapointed.Apart from being a completely different style of game to the originals, it is thrilling good fun.The storyline is clever and brings you back to the original games without confusing those who are new too much.Although the gameplay revolves entirely around the use of cards this does not prevent it from being as exciting and story driven as the original gamesA great game and for the price you can get it now.. WELL worth buying.

When I first got it, I was wondeing what it would be like! It's good. It is a very good idea for the gameplayIf you want a game for your the PSP that is like the originals, however, the new game Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops should be out soon! About March 2007If you can't wait for that long, you can always gat an american copy of of ebay. The PSP is region free so you can play it. The only downside I thinck to this is that the wireless function on it will only work on other American games

when i first got this game i thought i might not enjoy it, but i was very wrong, it has ended up as my favorite game as the graphics are excellant, also the quility of the sound is above standard.I have been playing it for 40hrs and still havn't got everything yet, which means that it has a great amount of re-playability aswell as you can make diferent 'decks' which are almost unlimited.I'd have to say get this game if you want a long-lasting and great experience in a game.

21.9.2006

I really enjoy playing this game as it has the quality of the Metal Gear Solid series but it comes with a twist. You define the moves you make by cards you draw. This idea was very fresh and bold and i believe they pulled it off very well.If you enjoyed the metal gear solid series then try Acid! Dont be put off by other peoples reviews and experience it for yourself as this is a great game for the PSP!

6.10.2005

metal gear acid is a turn based stratagie game with some flaws but many good points including a brilliant metal gear story line which i enjoyed nearly as much as snake eater and sons of liberty. At the begining it starts with just snake but on mission 6 you get a new metal gear character telios(A girl). The point of the game is to get pythagoras before the 2 suicide dolls.

28.2.2006

First I didn't want becuase it's a card game! But then I saw it cheap, and wanted it for the story. But after while in the game, you start to feel the real action in the orignal ps2 games! Becuase there's so many cards, it's mostly same, maybe a bit better (no it's not), you have more time to plan move ext... It still has the pure essense of meral gear!

Bought this game years ago and recently after buying a new psp I thought why not buy it again? I remember having fun playing it and unlike the game Yu Gi Oh this game doesn’t waste time in giving you the ability to get better cards for use and it arrived early so its a plus

31.12.2007

i really liked this game but if you have not play any Metal Gear Soild's before don't play this you'll find it hard and boring. this is a good game to buy and gives M.G.S a new out-look

6.1.2015

A game with an intriguing, if not canon story that has a unique gameplay style. Don't reject it straight off the bat, I actually prefer his to other PSP title Portable Ops.

28.2.2013

As a big fan of the Metal Gear Solid series I was pleased at the cheap price for this excellent game, it arrived quickly and was in top notch quality as described.
