This is my second Melitta Look IV Therm. I've owned a white one and now this black one - there were differences which I will explain below.PROS1) Timer function is great - you fill the machine and set the timer for when you want it2) Therm kettle is brilliant. I'm confused by those who say it doesn't keep their coffee warm as I've not had a problem. It'll keep it hot and drinkable for a good 2 to 3 hrs. The other benefit is that as it's insulated you can fill the kettle and then take it with you to the lounge/outside/wherever, so you don't need to keep popping back to the kitchen and the hot plate. The other great thing is the pouring/lid mechanism which means there is less likely to be any spills and also means you don't have to worry too much having it knocked of a coffee table (though obviously it still is HOT coffee so use common sense!)3) The strength selector. This does seem to make the coffee weaker or stronger depending upon it's position however I leave it at the max as don't see the point of weak coffee but that's just me!CONS1) Having owned both the Black and White versions of this machine I surprisingly did find there was a difference. The White version kettle didn't have the "no spill grooves" on the kettle spout whereas the black version does (see the photos). What that means is that I found the white version wasn't as accurate with it's pouring and would often spill the coffee as it poured.2) My first machine failed as I got debris in the water reservoir which then found it's way into the heating system and caused the ball valve to get blocked which meant that it took ages for the machine to make coffee as the water couldn't flow to the heating element. Lesson learned and I now use a separate water jug to fill instead of the Therm kettle and ensure I never leave the reservoir flap up when adding coffee3) Cleaning the kettle is a bit of a pain. Only the kettle lid and coffee filter holder are dishwasher safe. The kettle isn't and after multiple uses you will find the lovely stainless steel inside becoming coffee stained. My tip is that when you feel it needs a thorough deep clean, fill with water and drop a dishwasher tablet inside, put the kettle lid on and give it a good shake. Now leave overnight. In the morning empty the contents and rinse thoroughly with fresh water. It should now be back to it's shiny as new appearance.Overall a great machine in both looks and functions. Get the Black version though for the better pouring action.

When our ancient filter coffee machine finally gave up the ghost we needed a replacement. The requirements were simple: it had to make good coffee; it had to make hot coffee; it had to have a timer function. We initially got a coffee maker by another brand. It had the timer & it made pretty good tasting coffee, however it was the temperature that let it down. It made lukewarm coffee and the hot plate would switch off after 40 minutes (new regulations, apparently). So... set the timer for 5:20am (we get up at 5:30 & it took about 10 minutes to brew), and by the time I've got out of bed, fed the dog, answered the call of nature,we've now got about 20 minutes to drink a full jug of coffee before the powers-that-be decide that it needs to be allowed to go cold in order to prevent climate armaggeddon. This was a source of much profanity when I go for a refill & realise that (yet again) I've forgotten to turn it off & back on again to reset the 40 minute hotplate stopwatch. Cold coffee which has to be microwaved... again. This Melitta coffee maker circumvents the new draconian regulations on how long you've got to drink hot coffee by dispensing with the hotplate altogether. What you get is a machine that makes good tasting (and great smelling) coffee at a scalding hot temperature. It is then kept warm by the jug which is insulated. It's currently 7:40am & I'm drinking the last cup out of the jug. This coffee was brewed at 5:20am & it's still piping hot... hotter than freshly made coffee from the old machine. It looks sturdily built, and the jug is described as "unbreakable" - I can belive it. It's built like a Sherman Tank! The timer function is easy to use: set the time and then hit the timer button. The previous machine had to have the "switch-on" time programmed afresh every day in order to set the timer for the following morning. Yes, you CAN buy a filter cofffee machine with a timer for half the price of this machine, but you get what you pay for and I can see this coffee maker giving decades of service. Just get one, you won't regret it.

Every now and again, you come across a product that completely wows you. This is one. The thermos instead of a glass jug is a brilliant idea - and I now can't imagine why not all coffee machines are made in this way. For a start, it saves on power - because there is no hot plate needed.Second, the coffee keeps warm for a staggering time. Yesterday, I set the timer for a full jug of coffee at 6am. I had a mug at 7am, before leaving for golf. I then had a second and third mug of (still piping hot) coffee from the jug after lunch at 2pm. I then had a warm mug of coffee after dinner at 7pm. OK, it was no longer hot, but it was still drinkabley warm, with some steam - that's 13 hours after brewing!!!And that,my friends, is what compelled me to write this review. Two other reasons why I'm very taken by the Melitta coffee maker. One, the coffee tastes lovely. I don't know how they do it, given that it's not got all these mod-cons like shower over etc, but they do. I drink a lot of coffee from lots of places, and I'm very happy with this taste. Two, the construction is very solid. It feels classy and professional. In fact, this German made coffee maker feels like a good solid German car.Highly recommended.****** 18 month update (May 2020)It's still going strong, and I'm still loving it. I still maintain that it's the best thing I've bought for years. Since the original review, I've also come to appreciate the descaling mechanism - every six months or so, it detects that you need to descale. Once you follow the instructions, add a tablet to a jug of water, it does the rest.I like my coffee good and strong, and this is still producing the goods after almost daily use for 18 months or so - looking as good and as sturdy as new.

Very easy to use. You do need to set the time on the clock, but it's very simple to do - one button for the hours and another for the minutes and off you go. As I love strong coffee I have it set on maximum strength, and it makes a lovely cup of coffee. My friend commented that the coffee tastes smoother than with the old machine (which was quite venerable!). The coffee is at the perfect temperature, nice and hot without tasting scalded or bitter, and the thermal jug keeps it at the right temperature - I haven't yet had cold coffee when I leave it in the jug. I find the timer easy to set - simply press and hold the timer button and use the hour and minute buttons to set the start time.Release the timer button, then press it briefly to turn on the timer and it's done. It remembers the time you've set - useful if you regularly want your coffee at the same time.I have a long habit of leaving the filter holder and reservoir open to dry, and it works just as well with this machine. As there is no hot plate the coffee never tastes stewed. I find that you need to turn the jug completely upside down to get the last of the coffee out, but you soon get used to it.The automatic shut off is great, because the thermal jug keeps the coffee hot there's no need to leave the power on for ages. Some people have mentioned about cleaning the jug, as it's not recommended to put it in the dishwasher. I've found that a couple of hours soaking with dishwasher powder does the trick very well and the jug comes up nice and clean.Overall, a great improvement and I'm very pleased with it, plus it looks very slick!

This is a great machine that overcomes two of the worst problems with my previous drip coffee machine, a russell h., which was that the glass jug was easy to break and cost £35 to replace each time, and that it turned itself off after about 20 minutes so the coffee was always cold. This is such an improvement, a more robust jug that is basically a jug thermos and keeps the coffee at a drinkable temperature for several hours. If you place boiling water in it to pre-warm the jug before use, it keeps it hotter for longer, like any thermos. Thank you for decent hot coffee on demand! The taste dial doesn't make any difference that I can discern. The other thing is it will not work if the time is not set,so every time you unplug it or there is a power cut, it will not work until you reset it. This means if you use the timer to make coffee in the morning it will not work automatically if there was a power cut overnight. Where I live, there is often a momentary power cut each night. It is also difficult to clean inside the jug, you need a bottle brush. Apart from these issues which of course are not made clear anywhere, it is easy to use, easy to fill, and the jug is good quality and pours just fine. I have only had it a few weeks so I do not know about its longevity but so far we are very happy with it.I do not agree with the manufacturer’s claim that it contains ten cupfuls, or fifteen small cups. Where are they getting these tiny cups? Do they mean espresso cups? This is the type if coffee you drink in quantity it is not espresso. If two of you have two cups, you will not have much left.

I'm a self-confessed coffee snob. I bought this machine more to prove my wife wrong than anything else, as I was convinced that I could only get good filter coffee from hand-pour or expensive machines like the Moccamasters or Wilfas. Simply put, I was wrong. This machine does not seem to have the pre-infusion, the SCAA/SCAE approvals, and I have no idea whether it heats the water to the ideal temperatures. But, with a standard coffee to water ratio and my normal grind size for a pour-over coffee, it just works. It produces very good coffee and it does it more consistently than I ever managed with my pour-over technique. The insulated jug does a brilliant job of keeping the coffee hot for around two hours, and even drinkably warm after three hours. It takes standard size 4 filter papers that I can buy from my local supermarket instead of online or from a specialist coffee shop, or you can put a permanent mesh filter in it.The machine is plastic for the most part, so it doesn't feel like a heavy duty or professional piece of kit. But it looks nice enough and performs well, so I have no complaints at all.I've only had it for a few days so I can't comment yet on durability. For once in my life, I am happy to admit I was wrong and I am very happy with this coffee machine.

Not as rich, thick or oily (all of which I love in the cafetière). I have, however, only just received my machine so need to experiment with types of beans, grind size, how much coffee to add per cup of water and also the aroma dial!! Oh joy! So much coffee to drink! I am utterly delighted with how robust and simple this machine is. So easy to set up. Just follow the simple instructions & you're off! Woke up to freshly brewed coffee this morning (& yes, it did switch off automatically). The coffee is obviously going into a cold thermos flask. For me, I drink my coffee black, so this is a perfect piping HOT temperature. If you add cold milk, it will obviously reduce the temperature. While the thermos is great and keeps the coffee at a good, 'hot', for my requirements, if you are going to be adding cold milk, I guess the flask would benefit from pre-heating by adding boiling water from the kettle first before emptying & setting the machine to brew. Don't get me wrong, if you like your coffee hot & drink it black, or add hot milk, it is absolutely fab. In my opinion, there's nothing worse than coffee which is not piping hot! I'm thrilled with this purchase & hope that it will continue to function well. I shall de-scale as instructed to extend the life.

He LOVES this machine. We have gone through SO many machines for him now it is stupid, and he always goes back to his pour over by hand filter thing he uses. (currently all in my spare room having given up the ghost after a couple of months... these are 'pod' machines so I decided to get something different for him)Until now that is.It uses coffee filters and works exactly as his pour over by hand thing, but it is all automated, so he can set it off and then go off and do what he needs to do knowing his coffee will be hot and ready for him when he wants. He has figured out he has approx two and a half LARGE cups of coffee and it keeps it warm enough for a good couple of hours, and so he now drinks more coffee as he can be lazy and not stand over a cup for five minutes as he hand pours water over the filter.Time will tell if it has longevity, but he is using it heavily at the moment and is just perfect.I took a chance on this, not drinking coffee myself and having him as a real coffee snob, but short of spending about a grand on a barista style machine, this is just a damn good thing in his life and he loves it.Review by someone who does not drink coffee on behalf of someone who drinks shed loads of the stuff

Has a premium feel and makes great coffee. I set it going when I get into the kitchen first thing and enjoy hot coffee all morning. It all fits together very nicely, and looks nice sitting on the counter. It's the sort of thing you could imagine sitting in a hotel breakfast bar.The vacuum coffee pot does a great job of keeping the coffee warm, although I wouldn't submerge it when cleaning as small amounts of water get in under the plastic collar and slosh about. Also, cleaning the pot top is tricky as it has moving parts. The filter has a removable sleeve, which means you can take the whole thing to the bin when you empty the grounds. The filters are decent and relatively inexpensive.I haven't used the timer function, but the directions are obvious and I don't see it being an issue. The only minor gripe I have is the markings for how much coffee will be made. The water tank says it will make 15 small cups or 10 large cups of coffee - no way! A full pot equals about 4 large cups, so be aware that if you want more than that, you'll need to make multiple pots. Not a big deal, but a little misleading.Apart from that, it's a great coffee maker and is worth the money.

Have been through at least 10 of drip coffee makers - most all suffering from cheap construction, poor design, and ultimately short lives. This maker from Melitta seems to answer most of these issues. The design is good in terms of adding water (one of the things drip makers can and do get horribly wrong) as long as you remember to lock the lid back on coffee pot before pouring water into the maker (it prevents spills by keeping water even pour). Which gets to the coffee pot - in a word, fantastic. It is stainless steel as opposed to glass or plastic. It also has an airtight seal preventing spills but most importantly acting as a thermos for your freshly brewed coffee. The thing that ruins coffee is that most makers depend on a heating plate that keeps warm, but often cooks your brewed coffee beyond the ideal leading to burnt coffee that in the end turns cold anyway! This coffee stays hot to warm for a good amount of time. I only write reviews six-months or so after using an item - and in this case we have had and used daily for about 16 months. Descaling is a must if you want to extend the life of the machine.

I had this delivered today and wanted to do a review of my first impressions and usage.I can honestly say this is one of the best coffee machines I have ever bought! When I got it out the box it felt quality and premium despite the unit mostly being plastic. But it's not a light platsuc it feels solid build. The thermos jug is a great idea instead of using a glass one and works really well keeping the coffee hot. The unit also come with a few filters in the box to get you started which was awesome because I forget to get the paper filters when I got the coffee so would have been stuck. But you get 4 filters in the box so that's great. You can pick up about 80 filters on Amazon for £4 so no big deal. The first coffee is made was so good! The machine is very quite and cleaning it after was easy!I was recommended this machine by a friend at work. Never heard of the make before but very pleased with the purchase!I can definitely recommend this to anyone thinking of buying a coffee machine.

Had this for 7 months - best coffee machine i’ve had, I was so annoyed when couldn’t buy one that stayed warm for 2 hours as previous ones did ( new regs) however this one better and stays hot much longer anyway, cheaper to run as no hot plate to power, when descale light comes on I run through some lemon juice 15mls ish in full water tank then put a couple of pots of water through before making next pot of coffee, I read it on dr google and seems to work perfectly, I find it much quicker than trying to clean through after using descaler sachets, timer works fab once you get used to setting it ( a bit fiddly) you have to buy filters but compatible ones size 4 are perfect and less mess than washing out mesh (probably save more than filters cost by not having a warming plate using electricity ) so stop looking, order this one and enjoy

This Melitta filter coffee machine is really good. I had reservations about the thermal jug and the fact there is no hot plate. Having used the machine everyday for just over a week, I can say that the thermal jug keeps the coffee hot for not just two hours as stated, but at least four hours. The fact there is no hot plate is irrelevant, in fact it is a benefit. After four hours the coffee was NOT stewed as it would have been with a hot plate, in fact the coffee tasted really good.Cleaning the machine is simple as is setting the machin up out of the box. There are two tips I will offer (1) purchase a measuring spoon, then you will have the same strength coffe every time. (2)pour hot water into jug to warm it up and then empty the jug before use.All in I am very pleased with my purchase and have no hesitation in recommending it.

Ordered this product last September (Hughes Direct) and received the machine the next day. The coffee machine looks smart and produces nice coffee. The jug is well insulated and does keep the coffee warm for a decent amount of time. No chance of burnt coffee as there is no heating element on the base of the machine, the insulated jug negates the requirement.Update - the swing arm on our machine sheared and we required a replacement unit. The plastic is actually quite thin at this junction so care should be taken when washing. Hughes direct were brilliant however, they replaced the whole machine with a new one and DPD provided the replacement the next day, taking the faulty one in return.Enjoy your brews.ED

I read a range of reviews about filter coffee makers and checked the manufacturer' specs of the leading 3 or 4 before deciding on this one. I always take reviews, even independent ones, with a pinch of salt, but in this case the product works brilliantly well, at lest as well as the specs imply, and other reviewers are spot-on.Insulated jug works great, coffee does not "go off" as it tends to in those with a heating base, tastes as good after 2-3 hours as the first brew, and stays good and hot for 2 hours.Feels well built too. And easy to use.Overall a VERY good performer and good value for money.
